Sending a meeting invite, then cancelling it, then sending another, then cancelling it, then sending another...etc. etc. is the productivity suite equivalent of standing in front of a packed room and reading the slides on your presentation verbatim. It is being a boring idiot publicly rather than in private.

So, on the surface, this is just an article about flash storage. But it's not. What it's really about is the fact that the storage landscape is going to change fundamentally over the near-future.

"I have just discovered a whole new dimension to classical sculpture. If you dress the sculptures as hipsters it gives them an awesome new look. They become contemporary and totally badass. Needless to say, they look a lot more human. They look like people who we can picture in our lives. This beats Madame Tussauds. I am sold."
Very cool.

This is how you lead.
In a day when the US armed forces are under fire from all quarters for not responsibly dealing with soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines raping one another -- frequently, and with such impunity that the Senate is looking at a bill which would, essentially, strip responsibility for handling this from the chain of command -- it's stunning to see what real leadership can sound like.
Australia's military is facing something that's by comparison much smaller -- but Lt. Gen. Morrison, the Chief of the Army, has made his position on it absolutely clear. This is leadership.
If the US' senior chain of command were this explicit and direct, we would not be in the situation we are in now. Because things would never have been allowed to fall this far out of control.
Watch this video -- it's short, to the point, utterly f... more »

When I was a wee tiny lad, each summer meant a trip in the car from my home in Ridgeville, SC, so named as it sits on the ridge between two swamps (the Four Hole and Cypress Swamps to be precise), to my grandparents home in Pocomoke City, MD. There were two, no, three high points to this journey:
1) My mother would make chicken salad and pack a cooler with it and we would stop and eat chicken salad sandwiches somewhere. I realize that sounds rather pedestrian, but you've never had my mother's chicken salad, more's the pity for you.
2) The Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel
3) South of the Border
I leave you to meditate on South of the Border.

Also per request, an easy recipe for Palak Paneer
2 lbs spinach (frozen is fine)
2 cloves garlic, chopped
1 med. onion, diced
1" piece of ginger, peeled and crushed (use the flat of a knife)
1-2 green chilis, chopped
1 pinch sugar
8 oz paneer cut into 3/4" cubes (or whatever shape you like)
2 peeled, seeded, pureed tomatoes or 1 1/2 Tbs. tomato paste
1 tsp. garam masala
1/2 tsp. coriander
1/2 tsp. turmeric
In a heavy-bottomed pan, fry the spinach, onion, garlic, ginger, green chili and a pinch of sugar until well-cooked (but not particularly browned). Add a tablespoon or two of water if needed.
Puree the mixture with a blender or immersion blender and return it to the pan. Add the spices, tomato paste, and paneer (you can pan-fry the paneer if you like it that way, but I don... more »

Per request, a very easy recipe for Chana Daal:
1 cup chana daal (split dry yellow chickpeas)
3 cup water
1 tsp salt
1/4 tsp red chili flakes (or powder, I like flakes)
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
1/2 tsp cumin seeds
1/4 tsp garam masala
1 Tbsp ghee (clarified butter)
1/2 tsp chopped garlic or 1 chopped garlic clove
Soak the daal at least 3 hours (overnight is even better) in 4 cups of water, then wash and drain it.
Bring the 3 cups of water, the ginger, turmeric, and salt to a boil. Add the soaked daal. Stir, cover, and cook over medium heat until the daal is tender (about 30 min, but YMMV considerably depending on your stove, the pot, and altitude--check it and be sure), then stir it. If you like your dal a bit more mashed up, you can crush some of the chickpeas with the back of a spoon or a potato... more »

What's my favorite thing about +elementary ?
Probably that it takes everything I love about Ubuntu and Debian generally and gives it a clean, usable, functional interface that does everything I want. The only experience I can think of that comes close was in 1992 when I first used a NeXT computer--that seamless merger of unrestricted power and uncompromising ease-of-use. This is what Linux on the desktop is supposed to be like.

Bites from a voracious tick known as the Lone Star are leaving some suddenly allergic to red meat. Unlike most food allergies, the symptoms typically set in three to six hours after an affected person eats beef, pork or lamb—often in the middle of the night. The bite that seems to precipitate it may occur weeks or months before, often making it difficult for people to make the link.
Gee Whiz one could come up with a dozen sci fi scenarios behind this one. Hm. Villainous, crichtonian PETA conspirators… honey, call agent!

Fox Business is longing for a past that never was and never will be. Women have always worked at least as hard as men. The only difference is that now a great many women get paid for that work. The fact that women have opportunities to be educated and to work is one of the things that sets Western civilization apart from the kinds of barbarian throwback cultures that produce terrorists. This is news that should make us happy because it means we are continuing to make progress toward living up to our ideals.

The Atlantic Cities blog is really interesting. This post is about the difference between the daytime and nighttime population of cities. It's tremendously important for urban planning -- after all, if you need to run a business, or transportation, or think about emergency planning, you need to plan for the number of people who will be around during the daytime peak, not for how many people sleep there. But it's also important for what it tells us about communities: this lets you quickly tell which communities import workers and which ones are, essentially, "bedroom communities."
When I look at the last map in this article, of jobs per worker in each county, I can see that it actually shows more: most of the country is vaguely close to 1. Major cities tend to have a ratio way above one, surrounded by counties with a ratio well below one: bedroom communities feeding metropoles.... more »

Here's a great news for Chrome OS App Developers. The experimental Code Editor App available on GitHub at https://github.com/GoogleChrome/code-editor-app is now working in the last Dev Update of Chrome OS.
To give it a try, you have to enable the flag chrome://flags/#enable-syncfs-directory-operation and load the unpacked app from chrome://extensions.
After that, you'll be able to create a project from a template, run your Chrome Packaged App by simply clicking on "Run" and export your entire project as a .zip file.
As expected, this Code Editor App is also synchronizing automatically all your projects thanks to the chrome.syncFileSystem API which backs up all of them in your Google Drive.
Besides, I've just found out that if you search for the extension ID in Google Drive, you'll see all the files synced with this extension. See... more »

So, today I got to see how awesome the internet/social networking can be.
A friend in Maryland , +Russell Holly, wrote a post about Glass privacy.
+Jake Weisz in Chicago, commented on how he would like a snap cover to block the camera and the display from one side.
I jumped in, New Orleans, and mentioned that another explorer, +Ryan Weaving in California, made a different, but adaptable #glasscessory .
+Ryan Weaving jumped in, modified his design, and started printing a prototype.
This all happend in about 30 minutes.
I was just amazed how an idea was spread around the country and made a reality in such a short time.
#livinginthefuture is so awesome!
