My #foodfriday  post this week, some of my favorite tomatoes I have been enjoying lately from the market - this week, I think will be salad with avocado and lime - I've photographed them a lot, but this is my favorite image of the set :)

Did you know that soy sauce, unless otherwise labeled, is NOT gluten free? Go ahead, check the label of the bottles next time you are in the grocery store. Usually the 2nd ingredient on the bottle is wheat. 

I have come across several recipes by various food bloggers today labeling their posts as gluten free when they in fact include soy sauce in their ingredients. Note that there ARE gluten free soy sauces, but that is NOT the norm and you need to seek out bottles that are actually labeled as gluten free or find a good alternative such as wheat free tamari (or liquid aminos I hear works well). But - soy sauce as a general rule is NOT gluten free.

Be careful if you see blog posts and recipes that are tagged gluten free and include soy sauce, and please educate your family and friends in order to help keep those who must be GF from accidentally getting glutened and getting... more »

Happy #FoodFriday !

I've had to bow out the past couple weeks due to some eye surgery, but this week I can share again :)  These are some Springtime themed open faced sandwiches we've been enjoying this month, as I've been enjoying anything with poached eggs :)  Toasted bread, an avocado/mustard spread, tomatoes, asparagus, poached eggs and smoked salmon.  Freaking delicious. Enjoy your weekend!

{new photo} Enchiladas

Happy #foodfriday  everyone! (and look, i'm actually sharing a food pic on food friday!).  These are some enchiladas I made this week - actually they are "enmoladas" since I cooked everything in mole sauce.  Fan freaking tastic! Chicken, beans, corn and chiles cooked in mole sauce, then wrapped in corn tortillas and baked.  Topped with sour cream (or yogurt tends to work just as well), a little cilantro, and some fire roasted green chiles thanks to a fun birthday care package my mom sent me.  These tomatoes? They look like mini coeur de boeuf, they are so delicious :)

Yeah I know this is a super messy plating - sometimes, enchiladas are just messy, and that's what makes them good (besides the awesome mole sauce).

The Perfect Manhattan

Glass is challenging to photograph because there are always reflections that show up in the wrong places. Usually, these can be dealt with by changing the angle of your light or moving your camera position until you have reflections that compliment your image rather than distract from it. Probably the most important thing to bear in mind when photographing glass is that any fingerprint, dirt or smudge will show up in living color. Especially with digital images that record so much information. Keep a pair of gloves handy - either cotton or latex, surgical gloves are excellent as well - and wear them when handling your glass props. Or transfer the glass to your set with a napkin or paper towel. Also, make sure your glasses are clean. Dishwashers don't always do the job. Windex is great to make them sparkle. Time to Update your Profile!
Google+ rolled out a lot of improvements today - the one everyone's talking about is one of the more minor things IMO -- profile page main photo -- which got changed in size and resolution and how it works. But lots of other improvements as well including
- new "Reviews" tab on profile page
- new interface for Photos
- new and much improved ways to manage your content and visibility (ie, privacy) on your profile which are very welcome additions IMO
- a move towards the "Cards" you see in Google Now on Android devices as a style motif.
- a lot of little tweaks and fixes and refinements here and there.

Overall, I really like what I see. +Sara McKinley  has further details over on her blog entry today (she works for Google).

{new photo} A very green carbonara

Happy belated #foodfriday  everyone! Sorry this is late, but got around to cooking this fine sunday - made our favorite version of carbonara, which probably shouldn't be called a carbonara anymore, hehe :)

Instead of eggs to mix in the pasta, I use mashed up avocado with a little lemon juice.  And to mix in, fried up some garlic, zucchini, and pancetta.

I've read in a number of places now that when using social media, you get the best return for your efforts when you share 80% other people's stuff and 20% your own stuff.  Maybe this is true for platforms like facebook or twitter, but I feel on Google+ that is absolutely not the case - maybe because this is such a photography heavy community.  If 80% of someone's posts are shared posts of other people's work, I am likely not to follow them at all.  I only want to follow people who mainly post their own original content, because I am interested in the art that person creates.

What about you? Where is the line drawn from when someone posts too many shared posts that you aren't interested in them anymore?

Neat idea from +Stephanie Weaver in the Food Photography community to show how far you've come - Here I have the same main feature to the dish, prosciutto wrapped scallops, from when I first started photographing food to now.  The first time I decided to put them in pasta, the 2nd time a salad, but I hardly think that matters when looking at the difference.  Crazy to think how far I've come and how far I still have to go!

A LIST OF FALSE PHOTOGRAPHY BELIEFS, PART 1

A couple days ago, someone replied to me, "Landscape RULE #1... don't shoot mid-day." This lead me to make a post about how I disagreed with this "rule", which in turn prompted someone to respond, "...it's all about the light..." Being the contrarian that I am, of course I disagreed with that, too. ;-)

Now these have lead me to the idea of making a mega-post of photography rules and beliefs I reject. So here it is. This will cover both the ones which people explicitly say and the ones which go unspoken, but which people operatively seem to believe.

Really cool - Just noticed today that google+'s photo details now provides the number of views.  checking out  my images, they have been viewed more than on pretty much any other platform i've ever posted images to - facebook, flickr, 500px, all of them combined!  Just one more reason that goes to show that Google+ is a great active place :)

{new photos} Hot Chocolate

As I have been largely dairy free for the past 7 or so months, I've experimented a bit with some non-dairy substitutes, like coconut milk and rice milk.  I have found I really like using rice milk in hot chocolate - you can boil it and it doesn't scald or create a film on top, and the flavor I think works really well with chocolate.  Even found some marshmallows to use (at 4CHF/bag, sheesh!). This cup served in my favorite set of dishes :)

{new blog post} Coconut Cream "Pie"

My husband has been requesting a coconut cream pie from me for years.  YEARS! Five years later, I finally made him one - and by skipping the pie crust it was super easy to make, if a bit of a challenge to photograph/style a rather shapeless dessert :) I made it extra coconutty by using coconut milk instead of regular cow's milk, and opted for a meringue rather than whipped cream on top to keep it a lighter pairing with the custard.

{new photo} Grüsch, Switzerland

Yeah this is pretty much the same composition as my other image (since did several shots out on the balcony of our chalet) (https://plus.google.com/103613260673488067634/posts/HWVGYvRknkE) but caught this during a sunset and decided to try some long exposure photography.  I kinda oops'ed and forgot that the calculated exposure I would need at the beginning of the shot did would not account for it getting progressively darker as the sun set, haha! So I was a bit underexposed with my 20 min exposure, but didn't have any real issues pulling it back up in post.  I did mask in a shorter exposure of the Christmas lights, else they would have been too bright.  In the end, I really liked the color and effect on the sky that resulted from the shot.

{new post} Naturally Gluten Free Roundup #12 December

I can't believe it's been an entire year of naturally gluten free links!! I hope you have enjoyed this series as much as I have enjoyed putting it together - although I already was a big proponent of eating naturally gluten free, through this series I found myself very inspired as I learned of so many great recipes and dishes out there that do not require any modifications to be GF.

What are your thoughts? Is this worth continuing into 2013??
