a couple of suboptimal things, e.g. time to initialize a vine takes too long and I can't use the front camera. But the idea, and for the most part, the execution, are great.

This is a fun time waster!

They really should add an Android share intent to the app. So I can share the vine url with anyone and anything instead just "post to twitter"

Yeah, I agree, the sensor-based parallax wallpaper thing is pretty cool.  I like this 3d one better, though.

Android's Live Wallpapers are one of a number of features that came about because Andy suddenly dropped on us this crazy cool thing he insisted that we had to do.  In this case Andy was excited about the stuff that was being done with Processing, which is a rendering language that makes it easy for not-so-programming-oriented artistic people to make cool animated and interactive visual art.  He wanted us to let people make similar kinds of interactive art that can run as the wallpaper behind the launcher.

Unfortunately, Processing itself (at least at that time) just does not have the performance needed to be able to do this, especially on a mobile device with low resources and the need to keep power use as low as possible.  Also, at the time Android used thestr... more »

"The best entrepreneurs understand these dynamics and have been exploring “attach” business models, which basically means charging for something outside of the app store, like offline products/services (e.g. Square, Uber), online services (e.g. Spotify, Dropbox), and sometimes even hardware. Most of the companies that have succeeded (= generate real revenues/profits) on mobile were either desktop incumbents (e.g. eBay, Amazon, Facebook) or have attach business models."

A brief history of AOSP

(breaking my own rule and writing a work-related post.)

Working on Android for more than 5 years, I got to see first-hand the evolution of the Android Open Source Project. Here is its history, one year at a time:

2008: Release 1.0. That's when the source code and the tools were prepared for the initial code drop. 1.0 was released at the end of that year.

2009: Contributions. That's when the processes were created that made it possible to merge external contributions into official Android releases. 2.0 at the end of the year was the first such release.

2010: Automation. Many release tasks through 2009 were done manually and those got automated throughout 2010. Everything got automated for 2.3 at the end of that year, freeing up time for additional tasks.

2011: Crisis... more »

tl;dr: Gamasutra asked several game developers about writing games for Android. They say the platform is very profitable, and fragmentation is exaggerated by the press and not a big deal.

I used to be able to chat with my facebook contacts through google talk, thanks to XMPP transports and both Google and Facebook embracing XMPP.

I'm sure there are good arguments for dropping XMPP, and Google is not required to publish their new protocol as an open standard.

But I also think it that as a customer and developer, it is fair to be disappointed about this, and to complain.

There are now plenty of different proprietary messaging systems that do not talk to each other. From What's App to Facebook Messanger to Skype to iMessage to Hangouts. And while Google and Facebook surly have the most reach among devices, how you can actually contact someone depends on where he/she lives (e.g. What's App is huge in Europe, Kakao in Asia), what device he ownes, what identities he is logged in etc.

I currently have 3 different IM apps installed on myph... more »

anyone else installed ubuntu/xfce on his pixel via crouton? It's working allright for me. the only weird problem i have is that if I move android studio to my new 64gb sd card, it crashes at startup with a classcastexception. if I move it back to internal storage, everything is fine again.

I formatted the card with ext4 and gpt. The internal storage on the pixel is also ext4, right?

Anyway, I'm positive that i can make this a great working machine: ChromeOS is great for mostly anything, and i can switch to ubuntu in a second for development.

the only real downside is that I don't get the insane pixel density when writing code. xfce is not handling high resolution displays very well, so i had to switch to a lower resolution on Ubuntu.

Experience and Patents

15 years today was my first day at work. I've now officially been a professional software engineer for 15 years.

I've learned a few things over the years. Teamwork, tools, technologies, etc. College had prepared me for those.

However, college hadn't prepared me for the way patents have a catastrophic influence on the software industry.

Patents are supposed to encourage innovation. The underlying assumption is that there'd be less innovation without patents. And yet in 15 years I have never heard anyone say that they would only develop and ship a technology if they could patent it. Development always comes first, patents happen later. Even if someone tried to have that reasoning, they wouldn't be able to actually do it in practice: patents take several years to get granted, and in the software world... more »

#AndroidDev

I've created a simple Chrome extension that adds a 'sample code' link to Android API class reference pages to help you find relevant code examples within the official Android SDK sample code projects. It bears an uncanny resemblance to the amazingly useful 'view source' feature in the Android SDK Reference Search extension.

I find this faster than grepping the local SDK samples folder and it provides me with quick code context at the time I need it. It also returns references within the excellent training sample apps that aren't distributed with the SDK.

It uses GitHub search and the AOSP platform_development package mirror hosted there.

You can install it from the Chrome Web Store.

We need a better build tool for Android development. Too many libraries, and maven's apklibs feel very half-baked.
