Toxic nudibranchs—soft, seagoing slugs—produce a brilliant defense.
Some Facts About Nudibranchs
The word nudibranch (pronounced nooda-brank) comes from the Latin word nudus (naked) and Greek brankhia (gills), in reference to the gills or gill-like appendages obviously sticking out from the backs of many nudibranchs. They have poor vision and their sense is obtained through through their rhinophores (on top of the head) and oral tentacles (near the 'mouth'). They also have a foot that leaves slimy trails.
There are over 3,000 species of nudibranchs, and new species are still being discovered. They range in size from a few millimeters to 12" long, and can weigh up to just over 3 pounds. Two main types of nudibranchs are dorid nudibranchs and eolid nudibranchs. All nudibranchs are sea slugs, but not all ... more »

Pledging that “we must right these wrongs,” Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon denounced discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people, and declared that religion, culture and tradition can never be a justification for denying them their basic rights.

Air travel is a leading source of climate warming emissions, so the race to develop low carbon propulsion technologies is on. MIT is developing a noiseless, heat free engine called an ionic wind thruster. They state that the thrusters could produce 110 newtons of thrust per kW, while a jet engine would produce only 2 newtons per kW.

“Mars One” intends to send four astronauts on a one-way trip to Mars in 2022.
Before the astronauts are sent, there will be missions delivering supplies for survival and colony construction.
In order to finance the nearly $6 billion mission, Bas Lansdorp (founder of Mars One) will sell broadcasting rights in order to pursue a reality-television approach towards financing the overall mission.
"The revenue garnered by the London Olympics was almost enough to finance a mission to mars," Lansdorp said. "We believe that if we can make this happen it will be much bigger than the Olympic games."
Mars One will include early planning, crew selection, and settlement construction in the broadcasted program. Who wouldn’t want to watch?
Mars One is working with aerospace suppliers and space agencies from all around the world to make the missio... more »

This one is truly amazing. The Wave Disk Generator uses 60 percent of its fuel for propulsion; standard car engines use just 15 percent. As a result, the generator is 3.5 times more fuel efficient than typical combustion engines.

Similar to the concept of the solar roadway, India is now building solar canals. By covering the waterways with solar panels, the project not only creates energy, but also helps to prevent water loss through evaporation, while at the same time saving space and money.

Almost #ScienceSunday - Have you taken the time to sign the AllTrials petition yet? If not, sign it here: http://bit.ly/XRr7M4
To say that publication bias in medicine costs lives is not an exaggeration in the slightest. The fact that this issue has carried on for so long is appalling.
ALL trials should be published. If a researcher removed data from a trial, it would be called misconduct. Yet somehow it is acceptable to perform ten trials and only publish one. Please help send a message that this is NOT acceptable.
There is a fantastic TED talk on the subject. Dr. Goldacre discusses many specific examples of publication bias, and they will blow your mind. Watch it here: http://bit.ly/YLCokp

An honest to goodness, brand new Wile E. Coyote - Roadrunner cartoon made with today's technology (but all of the old humor). Enjoy!! This is the first Roadrunner done with computer graphics. Lots can be done with computer graphics that will be far less expensive to complete than those old Disney & Warner Bros style drawn animations. The computer graphics look good, and the video still has that Roadrunner fun. Only 3 minutes, but 3 minutes of fun! Be sure to go to "full screen" mode.

Plz Quit-smoking basics
Non-smoker lungs vs Smoker lungs (black). If you haven't quit yet there's still time! If you don't want to end up like the lungs below consider this alternative or any other but please quit. This is NOT an Ad for anything. Simply a wake up call. These are real lungs. Here's an action plan to quit smoking
Tobacco is a killer. Smokers and other tobacco users are more likely to develop disease and die earlier than are people who don't use tobacco. If you smoke, you may worry about what it's doing to your health. You probably worry too about how hard it might be to quit smoking. Nicotine is highly addictive, and to quit smoking — especially without help — can be difficult. In fact, most people don't succeed the first time they try to quit smoking. It may take more than one try, but you can stop smok... more »

During the brief hiatus between 1989 and 2005, there was No Doctor Who on the air (aside from the TV movie in 1996), so in 1999 there was a Doctor Who spoof created (sanctioned by the BBC) and it sent a little like this.
You might just recognize someone from a certain recent episode of Doctor Who.

Facebook 'fixes' Other-folder fiasco with a new pay-to-spam option.
When someone you haven't interacted with on Facebook sends you a Facebook email or Messages for the first time, Facebook unceremoniously dumps that message into an obscure folder almost nobody checks called the "Other" folder. (Facebook may use other algorithmic criteria, but it appears to mostly filter based on a history of contact, or the lack thereof.)
Most of the mail that ends up in the Other folder is in fact spam. But sometimes legitimate, relevant and important messages get dropped by Facebook into the Other folder simply because it's that sender's first contact with you.
I held a "contest" here last night to see who had the most important Facebook message buried in their unseen "Other" folder. Here's that post:
