Oh my! Why, Google, are you publishing a unified messaging client which doesn't support SMS and no more supports XMPP either? That's ridiculous. #io13

Why are people actually using ActionBarSherlock if they're only using it to display an ActionBar? It unnecessarily adds up 1MB to your app's size (that's enough for most users to start complaining...)!

Use ActionBarCompat instead (located in the samples folder of the Android SDK). Took me about 15 minutes to replace ActionBarSherlock with it.

Good old Android 2.2. What a pleasure in terms of UI and UX!

This is a fresh CyanogenMod 6.1 install without any apps installed yet and it has a whopping 10MB free RAM. Awesome!

Oh, and all the fun you guys are missing out with your big screens and advanced keyboards!

The best thing though, is how much time you have for things that really matter while you're waiting for the phone to respond on every click. #froyorockz!

I'm not sure, but does the recent change to the Google Play policy mean EA and <insert huge publisher with crappy games> aren't allowed to use their own crappy "download additional data" systems any longer, but use APK Expansion Files instead?

That's actually pretty cool: there's a built-in theme called "@android:style/Theme.Holo.DialogWhenLarge" in Android, which... well, you can guess what it does. I haven't seen that before. #androiddev

I'm currently working on less, but better (read, more stable) releases for OpenDocument Reader. To be honest, it's not that annoying to test code after all...

More posts on that topic to follow. Especially the next one about StrictMode might be interesting for some of you.

Any testing tools I forgot to mention #androiddev ?

In case you're still looking for a Google Reader alternative on Android, I think Press is the way to go.

What's new for OpenDocument Reader...

on Android:
- lots of updates have been released in the last weeks / months
- we now render most documents in under 30 seconds (previously 2+ minutes)
- semi-official support for tons of random file formats has been added: pdf, docx, etc! We're using docs.google.com/viewer for this feature (thanks Google!)
- I think there's no valid odt out there which we can't handle (at least partially)

on AppEngine / for Google Drive:
- we have been booted out of the Chrome Web Store for a few weeks, because we still used the name "OpenOffice Document Reader"
- we're back up as "OpenDocument Reader" - as far as I know, previous user should receive the updates automatically
- we now use docs.google.com/viewer here too, in order to display .odt files! Curiously,... more »

Hey Pixels,

Does anyone of you actually own a Pixel already? I have a quick question for someone who is running one in Developer Mode:

How long does it take to switch between ttys? If you don't know how to switch them: press Ctrl + Alt + the key to the right at the very top row of keys on your keyboard. You should see a mostly black screen with some text now. How long does it take from pressing the key to the text being shown?

PS: Switch back to ChromeOS by pressing Ctrl + Alt + key to the left.

The Chrome extension +Dominic Bartl and I created for the Google Chrome Privacy Hackathon a few weeks ago. It's really simplistic, and you wouldn't notice it most of the time out-of-the-box. If you activate "Safe Mode" using the extension icon in the upper right, however, you'll notice just how many websites are still using HTTP instead of HTTPS (happened to us while developing a lot!).

Have fun and safe browsing!

Apple just got the most expensive court room win ever: Pyrrhic victory

This case should never have reached a jury court, but the verdict is in. One billion dollar in damages although the jury was just sent back to recalculate it as judge Koh noticed some errors.

By all means this is a commercial conflict with a worldwide impact, but it ended up before nine ordinary citizens, laymen, two women and seven man who were asked to answer a very long list of detailed questions on very technical stuff. They were treated to endless streams of expert witnesses and the few journalist who reported from the court room often noticed ´jury looks blank while expert goes on an on´.

Patents, an important part of this court case are extremely dull material. You need to read every sentence of dense technical and legal documents, look at that description and check if nopri... more »

Conclusion after sniffing network traffic for an hour: all Google apps (except Translate) use HTTPS, pretty much every other app on my phone (Pocket, MightyText, StumbleUpon, ...) is secure too.

Moreover, HTTPS connections fail on a man-in-the-middle attack.

Only thing that doesn't seem to use HTTPS is Google Analytics and pretty much every ad network. That doesn't leak sensitive data, though. Only things like phone model, Android version, etc.

Happy Starbucks / McDonald's WiFi surfing! ;)

PS: Didn't try WhatsApp myself, but it's said to be unsecure, so don't use it in public WiFi.
PPS: Tested with Android 4.1 on Nexus S, with the most recent versions of apps available today.

What a great app: Settings Extended, by +sergej shafarenka.

The app integrates perfectly into the new notification bar of Android 4.1!

Just one thing that could make the app even better: why not make use of the new expanded notifications of Android 4.1 and display sliders for volume, brightness, etc?

Wow.  This is going to be a HUGE story:

"Physical assault by McDonald's for wearing Digital Eye Glass"

Choice quote:  "Subsequently another person within McDonalds physically assaulted me, while I was in McDonand's, eating my McDonand's Ranch Wrap that I had just purchased at this McDonald's. He angrily grabbed my eyeglass, and tried to pull it off my head. The eyeglass is permanently attached and does not come off my skull without special tools."
