Should social be mandatory for employees at events? What's your overly-complicated hashtag strategy? And does your favorite event have a bloggers lounge? It's Episode 10 of the Geek Whisperers -- live from EMC World.

This week's episode of the podcast had us feeling like we were Mall Cops compared to the life-or-death social media that accompanies Cisco's TacOps crew. Learn about social media crisis response & responsibility. It was a fascinating discussion for us.

This applies to Google+ as well. Brands can't make small talk, and they talk too much anyway.

Well, I started a VMware Community from the main VMware+ Page. Not sure at all what we'll do with it, but no doubt the right people will show up and have the right conversations.

Does anyone know how to connect the Hangouts-On-Air for my Page (VMware) with its YouTube account (vmwaretv)? When I try to do a hangout from +VMware it wants to save it to my personal account.

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, a Jedi Kitchen Master created an epic breakfast to unleash the power of his Jedi Padawan. Using the Force™, he created three nonstick steel pancake molds in honor of the galactic star fighters of his heroes and villains: Jedi’s Knight’s X-Wing Fighter, Darth Vader’s™ Tie Fighter and Han Solo’s™ Millenium Falcon ™.

Just posted this comment to the Jason Perlow article on RIM:
One thing that rarely gets mentioned these days is the Palm Wars, and how RIM's response to Palm remains in their DNA to this day. In 2000, Palm had a thriving platform of apps - very iPhone-like with ratings and magazines - and they were just starting to add wireless data (Palm VII, OmniSky, etc). RIM built all their apps in-house in Waterloo, and it showed. Even though there were developers building apps for the BB (I was one of them), RIM won against Palm by ignoring the noisy app space and focusing on the IT buyers with superior RF engineering, battery life, and an integrated, secure app stack. Even when the external apps were better than the home-grown apps, they were never taken seriously by RIM. This stay-the-course NIH culture, which won the Palm Wars of 2000, left RIM fighting the last battle when the iPhone and Android arrived... more »

Wow, today's Google search news is big. Social media now owns most of the top search results for VMware. That means I have to get up even earlier in the morning!
This is actually great news for VMware. Because we have such an amazing community of smart people around us talking and sharing and inventing the future of IT, there will be even more information available via Google!

I'm hoping that +Scott Johnston or another Googler can explain why the most recent versions of Google Docs (and some other GApps) can't handle increased zoom levels in the browser. As someone with low vision (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Low_vision), I really need to have the ability to zoom text in to read it comfortably.

This is important. Sites like Twitter & Facebook (and Socialcast and Jive) are based around time-based streams. Great for ambient information and conversation, terrible for finding anything. Watch for a new set of pinterest-like sites and visual bookmarking functionality in existing sites.

Infrastructure providers are afraid of PaaS.
Have you ever wondered why PaaS hasn't taken off yet? I mean, really! When you look at the value that can be derived from putting a lot of the intelligence of the stack into the cloud abstraction layer, why is it not gaining traction more quickly?
IaaS is all the rage now, and that's a good thing. IaaS enables customers to drive utilization and consolidation much higher than a simple virtualized environment. These improvements are a result of the abstraction of the infrastructure a little further from the user -- BUT -- IaaS is really just a better way of doing the same thing we've been doing for the past 30 years.
With IaaS, the end user is still very concerned with the "server" (even if we call it a "compute instance", it's still basically a server). Still worried about whether their... more »

My first prediction for CES in January (this morning I was meeting with a big Japanese OEM):
Android tablets will be a bigger deal than Windows 8 tablets.
After meeting with Japanese OEMs for my CES previews I just don't get how Microsoft can subsidize Windows 8 to compete with the Android tablets I'm seeing. My discussions with OEMs back this up. They see the Android-based tablet world breaking in two:
1. Amazon-style subsidized tablets for about $200 (low-end devices that don't run latest OS's, have very consumer-focused and very controlled app stores, and don't run all apps). Some that aren't subsidized, like the Archos, will hit that price point but will be cheaper quality, smaller, 7-inch ones, without brand names or distribution, so will struggle to get taken seriously.
2. High end iPad Android ICS-based competitors at about $500 to... more »
