Oh no..... This is no good news to start my day. One of my favorite must-see go-to blogs is no more.... :(
John Martz explains why he quits Drawn! in this post (link below) on his site, and yes, I do understand. But still....
For old times sake then: http://blog.drawn.ca/

Computer crashes are weird things... I'm not sure whether I am going to panic about possibly losing most of my data or otherwise take a zenish approach and consider it a liberation and a chance for a new start.
The second option sounds like the wiser thing to do. But I do feel in the mood for a good panic....

Monsieur Bandit's Daily Doodles
Been spending most of the day trying to get the old laptop back to life. He's starting up again, but it is a bit too early to do the happy dance yet. I seem unable to reach my backed up files. Which sucks.
Ah well.... There is still hope... Trying this, trying that... We'll see...
In the mean while, some more doodly weirdness.

From music to visuals
I keep coming back to stuff like this. Visual translations of sound, some "direct code", at first secretive and undecipherable but always with the vague promise that one day, you just might be able to hear the music you see, like reading a text in a book.
Also wondering: where are the touch-to-visual and taste-to-visual and smell-to-visual graphics?

I find this particular "Gimp"-brush to be the equivalent of using pastels or oil-pastels. It allows for a very direct use of color, which is great fun. And it doesn't leave my workplace covered in multi-colored dust, which is even better :)

Miyoko Shida Sanddorn balancing act + a question....
(You have probably seen this by now. It's been all over the internet lately and I'm usually not the fastest to pick up on this things...
But if you haven't, please check it out... )
One of the things that struck me about this act is how well structured it is. It is a wonderful piece of storytelling. Without speaking a word you are kept on the edge of your seat, wondering how it will develop.
But I discovered there is something more...
Miyoko Shida is not the only one performing this act. On her FB-page she mentions there are in total six people who do this. I found one of those has a vimeo-video where you can see the exact same act: https://vimeo.com/62422161
And while the structure or "story" of the act is practically the same, I must admit that this se... more »

Monsieur Bandit's Daily Doodles
I actually wanted to make some more drawings similar to what I've been posting the past couple of days this afternoon, but I got completely sidetracked by playing with "bad" photographs of sketchbook drawings.
If you don't make the photograph of your sketch under a straight angle you get a nice bit of distortion which makes the drawing look like a drawing and a photograph at the same time. I love stuff like that....
Soon I was making fake posters for non-existing music festivals, organized at unlikely venues again. Hello +Mark Horemans :)

Kickstarter project: NeoLucida - a modern day camera lucida
Remember David Hockney's book Secret Knowledge? Hockney put forth the controversial theory that many of the most admired drawings of the 19th Century, such as the Neoclassical portraits of Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, could only have been made with the aid of optical devices such as the Camera Lucida.
Enter Pablo Garcia & Golan Levin. Earlier this year they teamed up to bring this simple yet amazing device to students, artists, architects, and anyone who loves to draw from life. Getting your hands on a Camera Lucida these days was pretty near impossible. The only way was finding an expensive antique. If you could find one...
However, as they say themselves: their NeoLucida is not just a product, but a provocation. In manufacturing a camera lucida for the 21st century, their aim is to stimulate i... more »

I feel like taking a break from the food-illustrations series, but no doubt they will pop up again sometime soon.
In the meanwhile some sketches I did the past couple of days. This one seems to fit the current weather conditions over here perfectly. It's not raining yet, but it is gonna, so everybody is looking to get inside, have a drink before dinner or something. Who knows what the evening will bring....

DIY stuff: arduino, 3D animation, slow motion camera, a laser beam-photodiode and Homer Simpson-inspired key-tapping robotics were instrumental in making this.

Yup, a strawberry, again.... More graphic, this time.
(This would probably be a good time for a little arty-philosophical essay-esque comparison between both styles, and how realism often seems to offer less of a sense of order to me, but...nah... I just took a little nap and I'm just not up for arty-philosophical yada-yada....Maybe later...:)

Monsieur Bandit's Daily Food...uh.... Doodles
Oranges, again, remind me of my dad. (He really wanted to get his vitamin C in, I guess.)
My dad actually was a real sweet tooth, so more often than not he thought the orange he was eating was way too sour. His colleagues at work knew what was coming and they all sat there waiting with anticipation for him to start pulling faces and cringing. I never knew if he really thought the taste unbearable or whether he was just putting on a show for the guys.
The latter option is highly probable, though.... :)

A break from the food-series, a little Tango intermezzo. (I'm going to the weekly "Practica" tonight, but I've been having a headache all day, so I don't know if I'm gonna be up for it....)
To top it off: some Tango-Vals by Canaro. For some reason, I have the impression that's what the people in the picture are dancing to.....

Tomato. Such a common thing you almost forget how good they are.
Almost....
Sometimes the simplest things are also simply the best: two eggs, some cheese, tomatoes and some basil. Or chives. Or instead of cheese use chorizo sausage. Mmmmmm....

Monsieur Bandit's Daily Doodles
I usually never ever do lots of documentation before making any kind of drawing, but for these food-sketches I've been doing I feel I have to. otherwise, I wouldn't get enough of the look and feel of, for instance, a kiwi.
On the other hand, I still want to have a drawn or painterly feel to the picture, I try to avoid too much realism. I adhere to the old point-of-view that, if you want hyper-realism, you should take a photograph....
This balancing act is what makes food illustration fun to do. It becomes a multi-sensual thing. There is the shape and color of the thing itself, but also the way the color and textures are handled in the picture. Then there is the suggestion of taste and smell and feel, and perhaps even further associations with specific times and places, or moods, situations, personal memories even....
