"Only in the last few decades has a mathematics of roughness emerged, one that can get a grip on self-similarity and kindred matters like turbulence, noise, clustering, and chaos. [...] In the late 1970s Mandelbrot became famous for popularizing the idea of self-similarity. What is perhaps less well known about Mandelbrot is the subversive work he did in economics. The financial models he created, based on his fractal ideas, implied that stock and currency markets were far riskier than the reigning consensus in business schools and investment banks supposed, and that wild gyrations—like the 777-point plunge in the Dow on September 29, 2008—were inevitable."

Oakland Police Beat and Oakland Local are offering two investigative journalism internships for the spring 2013 semester. Interns will help research and report real-world, in-depth investigative stories. They will learn the fundamentals of data journalism, public records and courts reporting, as well as report and write their own stories.
Applicants must be passionate about public interest journalism and finding behind-the-scenes stories in a city with one of the highest per-capita violent crime rates in the country and a police department that narrowly avoided a federal take over. Applicants must have a basic understanding of Excel or Google Doc spreadsheets. Multimedia skills - photography, videography, data visualization -- are a bonus. Internships are 5 months long and 12-15 hours a week.
Email applications to Oakland Police Beat editor Abraham Hyatt, abraham@oaklandlocal.com. ... more »

In the latest episode I talk with Chris O’Brien from the San Jose Mercury News about the new IPO process and how it’s changing the way we cover companies who’re about to go public. Jon Mitchell, from ReadWrite.com, and I talk about how Apple’s product launch hype cycle just might have a little less hype in the future.

“So far, one of the biggest insights for us is that the emergence of new technologies means there’s a largely untapped opportunity to allow people to tie stories directly into their own lives—bringing narratives 'out of the screen,' so to speak, often through meaningful connections with characters," says Neela Sakaria, EVP/Managing Director at Latitude. "We’ve distilled our findings down into a few key principles, and our hope is that content creators begin to embrace the idea that the desire for interesting cross-platform experiences isn’t as niche as some might think. Innovative storytelling isn’t just for fantasy fiction, and there are exciting new opportunities for news creators and even retailers to use storytelling principles to engage people more deeply."

We are literally dashing around at night. Often, there are only two of us. People respond to it really well. Lots of people pass by. Ordinary people just really like to see billboards covered up with poetry. They find it really refreshing I think. So, we’ve never really got into any trouble.

As a veteran of that era, I love anything that documents it.
I ran bulletin boards in the 1980s as a hobby and put my Atari on Usenet (seriously), so I found myself in the editor's chair when the Star Tribune in Minneapolis decided in 1994 to go online. Prodigy was actually our first choice -- not mine -- but we switched to a Ziff-Davis project called Interchange, along with the Washington Post.
Why didn't we go straight to the Web? Because there were no tools and no ISPs when we began. Everything changed within a year, and the open Internet became the center of the new universe.
In 1999 I moved to Atlanta as executive editor of Cox Interactive. Fastball.com (mentioned in the story) briefly reported to me, before we shut it down. The two guys who ran it then produced a corporate sports channel on all the Cox local sites. All that blew up when the Internet bubble... more »

The night photography is what makes this so good: Finding Oregon is the compilation of six months of timelapse photography across the state of Oregon, punctuated by a 1600 mile road trip in September. We've filmed the Columbia River Gorge, Mt Hood, Mt Jefferson, the Southwestern Coast, the Alvord Desert, Leslie Gulch, Blue Mountains, Crater Lake, Eagle Cap Wilderness, Deschutes River, and more.

This NT/neutral retweet debate seems extremely misguided. We reshare the things we find on Twitter because we think those things have value. But no one is forcing us to reshare in only one way. Every situation where a journalist took flak for a RT could have been resolved by either adding a few words of context to the RT, writing a new tweet that links to the original, or just not retweeting.
If you think changing one letter in a retweet "protects" you, it's time to think about why you're sharing in the first place.
