Via +Fiji, which do a very good job in this direction in the sector image processing.

From the article: "We argue that, with some exceptions, anything less than the release of source programs is intolerable for results that depend on computation."

Closed source slows progress in general, because basal parts of a code have to be written again and again. What is a pity in everyday life, is intolerable in science.

Explore the mysteries of our Universe!

Join a very special Google+ Hangout On Air! On Wednesday, 15th February, from a cavern 100 meters underneath France, you will have a rare chance to see where some of the world’s highest-energy particle physics experiments take place and ask questions of the scientists who conduct them.

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN is the world’s biggest and most powerful particle accelerator, spanning the border between Switzerland and France. The LHC accelerates protons to nearly the speed of light and then smashes them together inside detectors like CMS some 40 million times a second to produce fantastic particles, many of which haven’t been around since the Big Bang.

Physics professor Dr. Joe Incandela will take your questions from deep underground in the cathedral-sized CMS experimental cavern, in front of the14,00... more »

How Fallible Memory Makes the Self

The fallibility of our memories is well documented. Many studies have shown that eyewitness accounts are unreliable and, in an experiment conducted at a British university, people who were shown fake photos of their childhood — their bodies had been digitally inserted into others' vacation photos — came to have memories of those events, sometimes extremely vivid ones. Memory researcher Martin Conway says there are two opposing forces in every memory: recalling what actually happened and fitting the memory with what the self requires.

While memory has been portrayed as an automatic system of recall, considering how it serves us in an evolutionary sense gives a more accurate picture. Memory, much like everything at its base, is adapted to help us survive. "There is only a limited evolutionary advantage in being able to reminisceabo... more »

Eyes Are the Windows to the Brain What Your Eyes Say About Who You Are

Cognitive science has updated the old adage that the eyes are the windows to the soul. New eye-tracking technology in the form of video cameras, which record every miniscule movement of the eye, are giving scientists important data on eye movement patterns — where we look, and for how long — revealing important information about how we read, how we learn and even what kind of people we are. Now the eyes are the window to the brain and scientists are exploring how we learn from text and images, including those viewed onscreen.

Who is using the new data and how? Advertisers are better informed about where to place an ad so that you will look at it. Ads that move, for example, are harder for people to ignore. On the opposite side, scientists are using the data to eliminate distraction and improve focus.Psy... more »

I Heart the Google+ Search!!

Here's what I love about this for my own personal use: Finding relevant posts from Google+ in a web search. I've been using facebook for several years for the purpose of information and link sharing, generating discussions, and networking. The problem is, I tend to post a lot. And people comment a lot. Some of the discussions get pretty heavy, with lots of secondary links in the comments, etc.

Every few weeks, I'll get an email from a facebook contact asking me "if I remember the name of that one article I posted on [psychology topic] because they thought there was a reference that was listed in the comments they wanted to look up and never bookmarked it, and then they couldn't find it on my wall..." Pffft... hell, no, I don't remember. And if I did, I certainly can't find a post from 2 months back.

"Researchers started with a 2005 catalog of existing medications and their known side effects, such as heart attacks or sleeping problems. After linking drugs and their side effects into a network, they instructed a computer to predict likely new connections between drugs and side effects. The program was able to predict 42 percent of the drug–side effect relationships that were later found in patients, the researchers report in the Dec. 21 Science Translational Medicine."

3. The spreading of an infect within a highly vaccinated population
4. The spreading of an infect within a population with people which cannot be vaccinated and "freeloaders" which choose to not vaccinate

Don't be shy!

Millions of people are on Google+, but not getting much out of it. Why? They're shy.

Most people on Google+ have never posted anything publicly, commented, participated in a hangout, posted pictures of themselves or their lives or blocked anyone. Yet these are the very things that make Google+ enriching and enjoyable.

Here's the problem: Google+ is massively powerful.

On Twitter, everyone feels comfortable posting anything. I just searched Twitterfall for the word "dream," and up came these tweets:

"I had a dream i guess it was just a dream tho"

"Dream a little dream of me."

"I wonder what that dream meant :/ lmaooo"

And a thousand others posted within the span of a minute or so.

Posting on Twitter is utterly without consequence.... more »
