Coastal Tranquility...

I saw the cloud cover yesterday and made a late decision to blast out to the coast with just a little time to shoot. My buddy +Rick Lundh and I got there just in time before sunset. I posted up in one spot and shot it til the sun went down. It was great night. Thanks for looking.

Morning Stretch...

I shot this many years ago very deep in the Columbia River Gorge. We had hiked up a creek for hours, traversing the creek back and forth, gaining elevation with every step. About hundred feet from the creek and trying to find a better way up, we came across this beautiful scene. Thanks for looking.

I shot this last year while on a trip with +Scott Miller to Proxy Falls. We had to get a little bit creative when the clouds disappeared and made shooting the traditional view nearly impossible. Thanks for looking!

A little unconventional for the time of season we are in up here in the northwest, but I thought it just looked so dam cool. It's been a year since I shot this and have always thought it would look cool in black and white....your thoughts? Thanks for looking.

A different take on the old tree at Crater Lake. Best viewed on a dark background, so CLICK IT OR I WILL HATE YOU FOREVER. If you don't have Firefox, Safari, or the latest version of Chrome (which all correctly support color profiles), the shadows will probably look crushed.

Yep, that's the moon on the left, and no, this isn't a composite in the way you may be thinking.

The original exposure had many stars in it, but they were quite dim at f/11 and ISO 100. So, I cloned them all out and replaced them with stars from an exposure taken shortly after this at f/3.5, ISO 800, to make them pop. The moon was in the original exposure; it's untouched.

This is NOT sunset - the post-sunset sky color just lingered a VERY long time on this evening. It's rare, but the handful of times I've seen this happen, it has been at high elevation - so I believe that has to... more »

I've gotten a few emails of people wondering what I was up to, so I thought I'd drop by and let folks know why I haven't been posting and probably will have limited posts for a while. I've decided to go back to school. With both of my kids in school now and whole days of nothing to do except photography, I decided I wanted more. I never finished getting a degree and figured it was a great time to do it. While I still do and love photography, I want to learn more about the nuts and bolts of the industry. I'm going for a degree in graphic design/multimedia for now...who knows what it'll be in the end. So for now....keep on shooting and posting! I still love checking stuff out while I study. :) Peace

Here's a cool one from Rainier last week. After coming down from the mountain one morning we spotted an incredible bunch of cornlilly. +Alex Noriega +Alex Mody +Michael Bollino and I took turns photographing it. Being maybe 2-3 square feet, there seemed to be endless comps within it, and the morning dew really played to its advantage. Thanks for lookin!

Starflame...

Dahlias are blooming! One of the funnest flowers to shoot in my opinion. Such a great abstract and graphic quaility to them, it seems like the comps are endless. This shot may seem simple, but in reality one of the hardest I've done as far as stacking and blending of images. I did use the auto-align and blend feature in cs6, but something about the natural gradiations in the colors it couldn't seem to pick the sharpest pixals out of the six images shot for this. So it ended up being a blend of auto and manual blending to achieve. Thanks for looking.

Jack Attack!...

Flowers are a-booming this year! This is from Three Finger Jack in the Sisters Wilderness in Oregon this last weekend. My buddy Paul Bowman and I took off early Saturday morning for a short overnight backpack into TFJ. Other than being crazy hot the hike was awesome. As we approached the upper meadow I saw a pretty good size meadow of lupine, then as I rounded the corner and saw  acres of lupine! By far the larger display of lupine I have ever seen, and it was in full peak bloom! It was a great trip.
As for the technicals here, there was quite a bit of dof blending going on (obviously), I used 5 shots. 3 for the paintbrush and front row of lupine to get tack sharp front to back and 2 for the mid and back. The 5th shot was double processed for the mountain and then the sky. All shots were shot at f16, 640 iso, shutter speeds varied.
I know this may not be that appealingt... more »

Tranquility Green...

Here's a shot from my recent trip to Glacier National Park with my buddy +Brian Kibbons .   This shot has been on my mind for years now, and very elusive for me. It seems like everytime I'm out shooting wildflowers I see all these beauitful cornlillies everywhere, but they all are well past prime. If I had more time I would just go out earlier and shoot them specifically, but the allure of the epic wildflower scene seems to be what drive my ambitions. Well anyway, this I was earlier at Glacier and found a bunch of really great cornlillies above Lunch creek. This is just a quick process of one shot of the gigs of shots I got of these beautiful plants. I'll have to dole them out slowly so I can have some to process for years, since I doubt I'll hit them in their prime for a while. Thanks for looking!

Breathe...

Here's one I got after a nice peaceful walk up to Bald Peak lookout. I didn't see another person whole time I was there, so it was really a great time after a stressful day to get out and shoot. I love just sitting at scenes like these and not shooting sometimes. I think since I became a photographer I sometimes forget that I used to do this day in and day out without a camera. Chasing the light is really fun and exciting, but slowing down and enjoying what we photograph is quite often a better payoff than the photograph itself. Thanks for looking!

Tigerland...

Trying to get a bit earlier this year and get some action at some lower elevations. This is from around Silver Star Mountain in Washington a week and a half ago with +Scott Miller.  We thought we were going to get a pretty good sunset til the clouds rolled in...still pretty good though. Was one of those evening when the light casts this beautiful glow over everything. We had a great night up in the mountains. Thanks for looking!

Gorilla in the Mist....
I just got back from a fun 5 day trip with +Scott Miller  where we hit some great spots in central Oregon, then up to Rainier, then down to Cape Kiwanda. We met up with +Dustin Gent and +Brian Kibbons for Rainier and Kiwanda. It was a lot more driving than either of us wanted to do, but we were chasing the clouds and trying to get to places that +Scott Miller hasn't been to yet. While I think we had to work a bit harder to find stuff at each spot, I feel like got got some good stuff. More importantly, we just had a great time. Thanks for looking!

Guarded...

Got away with the family down to the redwoods this last week. We had a great cabin at the KOA outside of Crescent City. It was nice to see my kids having such a good time after a busy year of school and activities. Without school, homework, Kung Fu, soccer, swimming, and all kinds of other things it was great to see them relax, stay up late and sleep in late. Also great for me to get out in the mornings to shoot and be back before anyone woke up.
This is from a short yet difficult bushwack into the forest one morning. Going off trial down there is surprisingly more difficult than it is in the gorge. It is still steep, but the underbrush is just incredibly dense. It was so green and everything is just so damn big! Thnaks for looking!

This is from a few days ago up on some remote forest roads in southern Washington. I was out scouting ridge lines for views and wildflower blooms and came upon some really great forest scenes. Simple Cascade...

Getting out into the woods with friends is one of my favorite things to do. Exploring and finding new places, just having a great time. It's just a great way to experience nature. However, when I am out there alone is when I feel the most at peace. The simple stillness of everything around you with just the sounds of the creek. It can't be beat! This is when it seems like I really grow as a photographer. I feel like I look at things a bit different, slowed down, more methodical about the processes of what is possible. I take the time to really make sure I have the shots I need for what I envision for the shot. Most of the time I walk out of the forest with a zenful feeling. Like I've really done something cool. Whether I've really shot something new or not, a portfolio shot or not, a popular shot or not...I know I have a better sense of well being regardless.I ... more »

Mossy Dream...

Here's another from my off trial exploits in the gorge last weekend. This little stream definitely deserves to have more time devoted to it, it is loaded with comp after comp. The whole stream flowed directly over the moss throughtout most to the stream. It was really magical and peaceful to experience. Thanks for looking!

The Rabbit Hole...
An amazing thing happens when I start shooting ferns and other small beautiful details in nature....time stops. I'm sure we all have our thing where we just utterly and completely lose track of time and fall into that state of Zen. When the details of the technicals of shooting perfectly align with our creativity fluidity...this is when I am the happiest. Thanks for looking!

Corner Pocket Falls...

Pretty sure you'd be hard pressed to find a shot of this falls. From what I know and what my gorge rat buddy +Brian Kibbons knows...it has no name. I am not by any means naming this falls, I just liked the sound of Corner Pocket. It was way off trail in the Columbia River Gorge. Kinda hard to get the shot I wanted exactly, so I had to push the limits of my camera a bit to stop the motion in the foilage. It was during those crazy thunderstorms we had last weekend, and it was pretty dark and rainy in the pocket here, but there were some breaks that showed a bit more light through on the top. I have to make a trip back in there and try getting it in better conditions. Thanks for looking!

Gem Falls...

Feed Me Seymore!...

Could help but explore and photograph many nerd gardens in the gorge...here's one I liked. This is a 3 shot blend done with my wide angle to maintain tack sharp all the way through the image. Why a wide angle you ask? Well, a couple of weeks ageo I was running around at Rowena tripod and camera in hand, and my camera decided it wanted to be a soccer ball. After a couple of bouces it stop. So now, probably die to the boucing on rock and the constant showering of waves it has taken, the button for the lens mount doesn't work. I was stuck with a 16-35 lens all weekend. Thanks for looking!

Monolith...

This is from Mother's Day weekend. I took my wife to the beach to say "thanks" for being so awesome and holding down the fort while I've been out shooting this spring. So as the night was winding down and the light was getting good, she took the kids back to the hotel and let me shoot this spectacular evening at Cannon Beach. Twenty years together this July and she gets more awesome everyday!

Epiphany Falls...

Made it down to some, and I don't say this often at all, very remote and hard to get to falls in the gorge. This falls is 4-5 falls above the mossy grotto. Doing this with good friends is the only thing that made this remotely enjoyable, +Brian Kibbons and +Dustin Gent . Even though I had to carry Dustin's pack on the grueling hike out, it was still fun to have him along. ;) The amount of incredible very old growth forest along this creek is insane. Cannot wait to get back in here in a couple of weeks. Thanks for looking!

Spent an awesome day Sunday with the family at the beach for Mother's day. My wife and kids got cold and headed back into the hotel for the night which left me a bit of time to shoot. I really haven't shot on Cannon Beach for years, but when the conditon are good, it is a really great location shoot. Thanks for looking!

From recently up in the hills of the gorge. Flowers are really great this year, although the is not. I've been out there 2-3 night a week for 4 weeks and have had terrible winds around 15-30 mph almost every night. I have had some great light also though, so I'm really not complaining too much. Thanks for looking!
