For day two of my design highlights of Google I/O I'm thrilled to share +Rachel Garb and +Helena Roeber 's talk on the Android Design Principles: Enchant, Simplify, Amaze.

These three simple words guided the transformation of Android in Ice Cream Sandwich and continue to influence every project we work on to this day!

Very happy to announce a new design pattern for the Android Design Guide: The Navigation Drawer.

Navigation drawers have been a community-driven pattern for a while. We have now formalized its use on the Android platform with a new chapter in the official Android Design Guide. If you're interested in using this pattern in your app, or want to update your existing drawer to match best practices and recommendations, head on over and take a look.

Hey guys - get Hangouts for your Android device now!

Note: the Play Store displays Hangouts as unavailable for tablet devices like Nexus 7. We worked hard to make sure Hangouts works great with tablets. Hang tight, this should be resolved shortly!

Type is a critical part of any design, and the philosophy with which we approach its application can make a huge impact. This article calls for a nuanced point of view that reflects my thinking, yet layout, animation, texture, color, etc. also benefit from this perspective 

Each craft should support and enhance the whole design in the most appropriate way.

If our practice strives to be invisible as a matter of principle, we will end up with a characterless void, monotonous and lacking emphasis, or individual identity.

However if we let any element run riot without concern for the content it supports, we will end up with a circus of discord, where each craft is in danger of becoming a caricature - overbearing typography, cartoonish animations, corny trompe l'oeil, or worse

Easy resizing, swipe to archive and more added to Gmail on Android

Today we released version 4.2.1 of the Gmail app for Android, making it easier to both view and read your messages.

No longer will your favorite email newsletters get cut off at the edges; with this latest version, you can now choose to have the emails resized to fit neatly on your screen and pinch to zoom for a closer look.  You can turn on auto-fit under Settings > General Settings.

When you are checking mail on the go, sometimes you just want to get through your inbox quickly. With that in mind, we’ve added a swipe feature that allows you to do just that. Swipe left or right to archive, directly from your inbox. Just visit Settings > General settings > Swiping conversation list if you prefer to delete from the inbox.

For most of human history a key economic indicator could have been 'horses per capita'. Yet if policy makers evaluated the impact of the automobile or steam engine purely from that perspective we'd really be missing out!

The Clothesline Paradox captures some very interesting (and timely) thoughts about how our notions of economic value have to change as technology changes the nature of our economy.

(VIDEO) Tesla Motors to build national network of free charging stations.

[Read this and watch. This is literally the most important news story of the year, if not the decade or century.]

Tesla Motors co-founder Elon Musk said there are three reasons people don't view electric cars as practical. Then he proceeded to solve each one.

1) "The range is too short."  His new super charger will give high-end Teslas a 150 mile trip on a 30 minute charge. "You could drive for three hours, stop at a rest area and recharge for 30 minutes and be ready to go again." There are six stations already deployed in California. I'm excited and honored to be helping judge IxDA's 2013 Interaction Awards, and today I'm even more excited because Marc Rettig has written a very inspiring piece on a topic near and dear to my heart.
