Tonight stands to be one hell of a challenge - I'm after a color in a range that I don't work with often, and often struggle to get just right normally: purple. 

Tonight, it stands to be even more of a challenge because I have a specific version of this color in mind, and one that is damn hard to nail down even when you are good with purples.

I want something, deep, dark at masstone, and translucent; intense, a purple you can get quietly and contentedly lost in. 

It's the color that goes from the color of the purple shimmer over black feathers to twilight sky.

If I had dioxazine purple pigment, I'd just go with that - but I don't, and that would take away from the challenge too. More than that though, it takes away from the potential for a full range of subtle shadings of this color.

I've gotten a bug up my... well, you know the phrase... about cleaning up the studio. Reorganizing it, setting it In order, cleaning out stuff, getting rid of things I don't want or need. I started last night, trying to work out how I want everything to go, when I'm all finished.

In the process of sorting things out, I decided to start cleaning my brushes and empty out my paint jars. Figured I'd just pour the paint out into some cupcake tins I keep for wax cleaning purposes. 

So, here I am, pouring out my most used colors into this tin at one in the morning, and I honestly expected to see something just shy of a neon rainbow staring me back from that cupcake tin, considering just how intense my paintings tend to be, color wise.

You can imagine my surprise when I saw this sitting at my feet.

Out of curiosity, I checked out the pages Facebook recommended for me today.

The list looked a bit like this:

//the morning after intense painting is hard. There is always this feeling of empty, and I am left with the knowledge that I put all that was inside into the work. Then, looking at the work the morning after, the image I hold in my hands rarely returns the same amount that went out in it's making.

Much like with digital image formats, I have not worked out a lossless image compression method yet.

This is how you lead.

In a day when the US armed forces are under fire from all quarters for not responsibly dealing with soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines raping one another -- frequently, and with such impunity that the Senate is looking at a bill which would, essentially, strip responsibility for handling this from the chain of command -- it's stunning to see what real leadership can sound like. 

Australia's military is facing something that's by comparison much smaller -- but Lt. Gen. Morrison, the Chief of the Army, has made his position on it absolutely clear. This is leadership. 

If the US' senior chain of command were this explicit and direct, we would not be in the situation we are in now. Because things would never have been allowed to fall this far out of control.

This is really amazing. By doing the exact opposite of what we all expect, we can solve the huge problem of desertification - tackling climate change and world hunger while at it... Awesome.

You what the problem with that one is? She is still young. She is one of those who is still in love with music and art and all the little beautiful things. She still dances around the almost-silent living room, the only sound that of her bare feet and toes sliding with a shhh'ing noise over the floor.  She is a siren to the disenchanted; unexpected sunshine in the depths of winter when you had resigned yourself to the cold and dark.  She probably skips through the parking lot once in awhile, still runs down the beach, and still radiates palpable fury when angry; she still has that life force that time hasn't worn away or used up. And yet, for all of her youth, she possesses a wisdom that comes from being at home in the thick of spring and summer: live now, for this too shall pass.

She reminds you of your own mortality, and that you are still yet alive.

The Studio, which I may have found a way to keep. (It is going to take a tremendous amount of work, but I may have worked out a way.)

It's only marginally cleaner right now, as I moved the paint buckets out of the way to work on the encaustics. 

Which means that, yes, I sit ON THE GROUND, in the middle of my studio, on top of heaven knows how much paint. 

Whatever the art requires; yes master, whatever you say master. 

(Even the chairs are covered in paint though, so it's not like it makes a difference where I sit.)

It represents, to me, the melding of multiple skills and approaches I've been working on, slowly; many I've taught myself or made up to create effects. More than that - it was the successful melding of those techniques and skills. It was a coming together of new understandings, it was... it was effectively a breakthrough for me.

//The critic in me says it's lumpy, rough, it's not my standard pretty. Only, that critic forgets that I am not after pretty - I am chasing beautiful, and there is something beautiful about raw, honest, authentic expression when there is both passion and skill behind it.

So it turns out that when the kids go on vacation, my motivation decides it wants to as well. (So I'm not working at a breakneck pace currently, but still working.)

Hauling the kids to the printer's and then studio is one heck of a challenge though, especially since I still don't have my debit card info I need to PICK UP the prints. Oy.
