I found this absolutely fascinating. It's always exciting to see techniques of the present used to preserve the past, but it's very difficult to imagine the scale of the London Blitz until you see it in a graphically easy to digest way like this.

Today is the 125th Anniversary of the birth of Field Marshall Bernard Law Montgomery, commander of British forces in North Africa and mastermind behind the D-Day landings.

You don't Get to say THIS often!
Ladies and gents, if you are at a loss for something to do on a Saturday evening and resident in the UK I've got quite an announcement! - The secret is out (thanks to Sky TV listings) and I'm going to be on the third most popular TV show in the UK, Take Me Out. Fancy watching somebody you know embarrass themselves in front of six million viewers? I think I need as many of you as possible to tune in and cross those fingers to see if I manage to get myself a date (I'm the "Debonair Londoner" in the description)! Wish me luck!
Single man, Demean yourself!

A Great Man Remembered
today marks the 117th anniversary of Buster Keatons birth. If you love any kind of comedy, and don't recognise this clip I implore you to watch it repeatedly. He's genuinely not only a pioneer but a master of his craft. You can't help but admire the man.

Kiss Goodbye To A Social Life - FF7 is being released on PC
This game pretty much put my life on hiatus when I got hold of it on Playstation back in the day. A school friend of mine thought it was "pretty dumb" and just let me borrow it because he couldn't work out how to play it. I was mesmerised. This was the first game I'd really got to grips with that had a real tale to tell, characters I could identify with and care about. I wanted to see this through, because I wanted to complete their journey and discover how things progressed. Then I wanted to unlock all of the secrets and visit all the hidden places. Around 300 hours later I was satisfied.
It's coming back to PC. I might well have to book some annual leave for this...

On Google Plus
Well, last night I spent the evening at Google HQ in London whilst they took the time to show off their plans for the future and the strides they've made over the past year. The food was lovely, a private performance from an undoubted innovator in the shape of +Daria Musk, spirited presentations from +Cadbury UK and +LateRooms.com about how they made G+ work for their brands - but the whole thing actually left me feeling deflated and more than a little disillusioned. Why?
Social Media is a cut-throat industry
Google has copied Facebook several times to improve its offering; there's no shame in seeing something that works, understanding what makes it great and integrating that into your own model. Facebook has done the same to Google by copying the way in which you can have selective circles/streams. Hangouts are great, genuinely. But if that's t... more »

Currently sat at the UK Google HQ where they are about to reveal something new and exciting about Google+. True to their sense of humour theyve handed me branded flip flops and shades whilst its bucketing down with rain. Watch this space and I'll tell all very shortly!

The End Of Free Facebook?
Anyone have any thoughts? It seems Facebook is now trialling an adaptation of the business advertising "sponsored stories" model for personal pages. A Smooth move? Would you pay to have your posts seen by more of your friends?

The Greatest Place On Earth
I took this photo a couple of weeks ago in Vienna, it's the view of the central dome of the Dr. Karl Lueger-Gedächtniskirche in the middle of the Zentralfriedhof, one of the largest cemeteries in the world. It's a representation of the heavens and stars...such an overwhelming sight when standing below it..the sheer scale and majesty perfectly captured just what Vienna meant.
I want to know from you now though...Where's the most beautiful place you've ever been and why?

Red, or Blue?
"You take the blue pill – the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill – you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit-hole goes..."
Is there room for more than one Social Network, or is it time to consolidate and Make a Choice?

New Google privacy rules come into force at midnight. If you don't want your entire web browsing history packaged and associated with your login (they could learn everything from medical worries, sexuality, interests, tastes, fears and a whole lot more for marketing purposes or otherwise) follow the simple steps on the link below to make sure you don't get caught out.
Please do make sure everyone knows about this if possible. It's a horrible thing to accidentally forget to make an informed choice about.

Keep Calm
Step away from the witty reconstructions of a 1940's propaganda poster. It was funny the first time, the second time was probably passable. But I've seen these stemming from Skyrim to Sex and the City. It's time to put the sign to bed. They stopped using it after the war. I felt pretty calm until I saw yet another of these.
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, nothing is truly new, parody can be a great form of comedy. But let's move onto one of the 50,000 other posters from the era maybe and give this one a well earned rest?
To quote again Jean-luc Godard "It's not where you take things from, but where you take things to" - the only place I want this taken is away..

Social Media "Gurus"
This is something of a sore point with me. Social media is sort of like the wild west. It's new, it's fresh, it's vibrant. I've been thundering around with it for about five years professionally and before a fair amount on a personal level. I read some great blogs, I've done some wonderful things with it and I'm fortunate enough to earn a living as head of social media for a London marketing company.
I'm not a "guru". There are some people passing themselves around as "wizards" and "kings/queens" of social media because they have 25 facebook fans and a twitter account (Most laughable was a "social media prophet". With such a new art, nothing has solidified. Every year the entire rulebook is practically torn up and rewritten. That's what makes things so exciting. Nobody is.

Genetic Portraits
Something interesting to reflect on a cold Monday morning.. I've always been fascinated with inheritance and genealogy but I thought you might like this too, a photographer has been taking photographs of relatives - then splicing them together to create a single portrait in the hope this will show the genetic resemblance between individuals. It's rather eerie how similar some of these people look.

I think we should start a campaign to have the names of our stations changed. I would smile a lot more on my way to work if I got off at "Frog innard" from "Swelled injunction".. Perhaps this needs to be handed out to tourists as they arrive.

Google Plus, Google Search And Psychology For Beginners
Is anyone using the new Google home page yet? I've not had a chance to get hold of it yet but it's interesting how a change to a grey bar and a drop down menu echoes the G+ home feed. If figures are to be believed Google is making leaps and bounds in subscriber numbers but if the whole thing were to become seamless - There perhaps would be a lot less anxiety about making that leap to a new social network.
It's a proven psychological concept that we find it hard when we've invested so much time/money into something to walk away when it would be much more prudent to - Do you ever remember the car that always needs just a small repair to make it better..every single week? We feel like we've spent so much on it that we can't just buy a new one.. Facebook might not be perfect but for the every day user with... more »

I'm not a great photographer, but I had to try and capture this for posterity. My parents live pretty much exactly on the edge of Manchester (UK) - I've flown home for Christmas and took a walk up behind their house tonight.
When you stand on the summit of the peak you can see the entire city (population 2.6 million) laid out in front of you (this is a panorama photo of three full pictures stitched together). Power fluctuations almost feel like waves crashing around each other as they twinkle. I'm going to learn a little more about my camera and go back when the clouds are gone, when the stars meet this electric sea its almost a perfect juxtaposition of man and nature. It reminds me of my favourite poem - which I share with you below.
You also know, my love, the gray disease

I saw this photo a long while ago but with recent events I thought it was worth digging out. This is an aerial photo of the Korean peninsula, what better way to show the marked difference of economic prosperity between North and South than with this)? It astounds me every single time.

A little self promotion
I'm never very good at this part, but I thought I'd make a little mention of this as I never have before - though my musical tastes are phenomenally wide I make a very specific kind of music at home and as something of a hobby. It's a genre that is gaining traction fast but is still relatively unknown. I thought I'd pass it along to you, my lovely plussers in the hope that on a gloomy Monday you have something new to provide a little soundtrack. If you enjoy it then I'd be honoured if you passed it along/told a few of your friends.
Electro swing is a fantastic mix that sits well with my old fashioned sensibilities, combining swing and jazz from the 20's, 30's and 40's with modern pop and dance elements to create a fresher hybrid for the nightclubs of today based on songs & melodies that we recognise and love already. I've... more »

Facebook might be banned from unsolicited targeted advertising
I'm dumbstruck at this. That's almost all of their revenue straight down the pan. I'm sceptical to say the least that many people will consent to having their entire profile indexed and targeted by third parties for marketing purposes. We've already seen the ruckus kicked up by the pro-privacy groups in relation to FB already..

Has anyone else noticed a relative slowdown in the number of posts at the moment? My stream used to move so fast that I couldn't keep up with it - now it's moving at a much steadier pace. Have we found that comfortable point now or is this some kind of other indication?

Soundtrack To Our Lives
Another music post.. this time I want to hear tracks from your favourite soundtracks (or the whole thing if you just can't choose). Introductions
I haven't done one of these in a while, but this week I've ended up sailing past the 2500 followers mark and I'd love to learn a little more about you and where to circle you/you circled me from. We must all have great tastes obviously if we found each other ;) Please do tell me about yourselves and your interests and I'll try and squeeze you in. Already in my circles? Android Fun At Mealtimes
So... Android updates go alphabetically and have codenames based on food. We've had Cupcake, Donut, Eclair, Frozen yogurt (froyo), Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice cream sandwich... I'm hoping J will be a Jam sponge. Anyone want to throw enough foods at me to see if we can predict the whole Android alphabet? ;)

The Big Reveal
And so this is what I've been working on for a while now.. It's quite a clever little social gaming Android application with an interesting little twist - you can play for fun and pride but you can also wager micropayments should you so choose on the outcome of these games to make things a little more interesting. I've included a link to the facebook page there and all likes are graciously accepted - but there's instructions on there for those of you who are interested to sign up for the beta testing that will be starting in a week or so.
The blog itself lists the financial incentives on offer for anyone keen enough to lend a hand, we'll be starting you off with some free money to try the wagering system and we'll let you keep any money you win throughout the testing process. We'll also be giving away a Samsung Galaxy Tab too.

Mozart - The Original Rockstar
When someone says "You should listen to Mozart", where do you even begin with a man who wrote over 600 masterpieces, starting from the age of five? It can be a little daunting but this link has it all (in addition to youtube and spotify playlists of the whole thing for easier digestion).
The tips in here about what to listen out for, a little bit of context and a helping hand in understanding something that people have devoted their whole lives to and still come no closer to unravelling the enigma that is Wolfgang Amadeus. There are two kinds of people I think when it comes to this.. people who appreciate Mozart, someone who was just so radically different, one of the greatest minds of all time and nothing short of a genius - and people who haven't listened to enough Mozart. ;)

A Little Help From My Friends
This is something of a casting call in the knowledge I have so many keen technophiles in my circles. I'm looking for beta testers to help put a new smartphone app through its paces over the next few weeks.
There'll be a little bit of a financial incentive in it for you which I'm going to get confirmed but ideally the more the merrier. Can I get some hands raised (a +1 or a comment will do fine, then I'll get in touch to arrange the finer details)? Location not important, you can be anywhere in the world.

I overheard in passing someone talking about this and I've read more times than I can count about "_intelligent eyes_". So here is my question..
Can you tell how clever somebody is by looking at them? Have you ever prejudged somebody like.that and been dead right/wrong? I'm very curious to hear your responses!

OZYMANDIAS
I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said: Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed:
And on the pedestal these words appear:
"My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!"
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.
- Percy Bysshe Shelley, 1818

The Future That Never Was
I found this and had to pass it along. It's a collection of predictions of life in the year 2000 from the turn of the century onwards. Some of these concepts are blissfully unaware (all clothes will be made from asbestos anyone?), some have oddly come true and some are well on their way..but it's almost romantic looking back at this ideal, science fiction utopia world our ancestors portrayed.

Plussers you enjoy
I've been doing a bit of circle management and I'm looking for a few new interesting people to populate my stream a little. Who better to help me than you guys? I don't really want the same familiar faces that everyone already knows, I'm looking for people you know who contribute, converse and generally know their stuff in the fields of tech, politics, music, science, social media/marketing, TV, cinema, games and anything else that I might find interesting (I value debate above almost anything). Recommend a friend that I might not have and we'll see if we can share some knowledge together. I'm sure I've got a couple that you'd love too!
I'm not too bothered about acres of gif reposts....
