High Noon
Commonwealth Lake, Alberta

Here is a photo from my last ski touring day, just before the big meltdown started 1 week ago. This was my lunch stop, and even +60 sunscreen didn't stop all the UV. At this altitude I'm above 20% of earth's atmosphere, and the snow reflects most of the UV back, so its the same radiation as 2 tropical suns. Nice and toasty!

Today the snow here would be isothermal (inaccessible mush), and will stay that way until either the snow all melts or it starts to freeze again at night.

On the Edge of Mordor, Hawaii

BEST VIEWED LARGE - You should be able to see the subtle intricate details in the Lava as well as the highlights.

We were incredible lucky to have wandered to the Edge of Mordor and back on Big Island of Hawaii. The lave has just started going into the ocean two days before we arrived and on our second visit an inflation cycle in the Volcano cause more than normal lava flow into the ocean. I wanted to capture the essence of what it was like when photographing the lava at Twilight.

How was this image created?
This is an manually blended image using our iHDR manual blending workflow. The sea floor and steam is lit by the light from the lava stream. While the sky is showing of the last glow from the setting sun. One of the biggest challenges was to dealing with the thermals caused by the heat around the lava streams. Camera's... more »

Quiver tree very early. Early bird catches the worm or so. In German: Morgenstund hat Gold im Mund! The German phrase suits here much better with the light :DD
I placed the camera in the middle of the trunk with a remote to push the button :DD

Redstart
Redstarts are a group of small Old World birds. They were formerly classified in the thrush family (Turdidae), but are now known to be part of the Old World flycatcher family Muscicapidae. They are currently treated in four genera, the true redstarts Phoenicurus, the closely related genera Chaimarrornis and Rhyacornis, and the less closely related genus Hodgsonius.

The European Stonechat (Saxicola rubicola) is a small passerine bird that was formerly classed as a subspecies of the Common Stonechat. Long considered a member of the thrush family Turdidae, genetic evidence has placed it and its relatives in the Old World flycatcher family Muscicapidae.

I am pretty sure that Garden of Eden would have looked something like this? Right? I love this location of Eagle Creek in Northern Oregon. It is difficult to get here, but the best time to visit this location is when it is raining under heavy overcast skies. This was my third attempt to photograph this location....and if I had to try 300 more times before getting a shot like this I would have enjoyed every minute of it. 

How was this photograph created?

Photographers are full of themselves...especially landscape photographers like me. Here is a photograph I took ACCIDENTLY (it was a mistake) and decided to give is a fancy title (Impressionism) and post it as an Artistic shot. 

Does it really make is a work of ART? Or is it still a mistake? 

How was this photograph created?
While trying to get a good composition I hit the shutter release and had to wait until I could see through the Liveview again. After waiting for few seconds I picked up the camera and went to help a student. This created a ghostly impression in the foreground and a streak of moon in the sky. I cloned out the blurry streaks of the moon and replaced it with the one you see in the photo.

I love Yellowstone National Park with its unique geology and fantastic amount of wildlife the opportunities for photographing the park is excellent. I can honestly spend years photographing this place and never get tired. Among my favorite locations are the geysers and thermal area around Old Faithful. Here is a short from of the less visited location in Old Faithful Area. 

How was this photograph created?
One of the unique things about Yellowstone Hot springs are its vivid colors. These colors in the water are at its most intense during the afternoon hours when the sunlight is very harsh. Samsung has announced the NX300 - the latest in its NX series of APS-C mirrorless cameras. The NX300 is built around a 20MP sensor that includes phase-detection focus elements to allow a Hybrid AF system for faster focusing. It gains a larger, 3.3" OLED touch screen with WVGA (800 x 480) equivalent resolution. A faster processor helps the NX300 hit nine frames-per-second for continuous shooting, and allows 1080p movies to be shot at 60fps. The interplay of morning light, fog, and hills is what drew me to this scene.  Not sure if it will work for everyone, but I'm compelled to share this image to see what feedback it gets. 
This is a single image using a Nikon D800 and a 80-400 VR lens.  Simple contrast, dodge and burn adjustments were applied.  Thanks for looking!

Nothing beats getting our of bed putting on your water shoes and walking out the door just to find yourself on the beach like the one below (with a camera and a tripod) in hand. And so it was for us when we went to Hawaii few years ago. Later this month we will be holding a photo walk on Ohau....here are the details:

How was this image created?
I tried to time my shot with the incoming way to catch the various patterns in the foreground. To accomplish this, I needed to capture the entire dynamic range in a single shot...so I used a hard stop GND filter to balance the light between the ground and the sky.

Wind Worn

A few weeks ago, I had a chance to visit one of those special places: the ancient bristlecone pine forest in the White Mountains east of Bishop, California.

Since the road to the Patriarch Grove was open, I headed up that way. Since time was limited, this gnarled, old spirit of a tree stood out. As the clouds passed by, I decided to extend the exposure time to contrast the stark, solitary statuesque tree.
