S. A. Hunt, Novelist2,431We set our G+ cover images and elsewhere profile pics to Victorian illustrations and MP frames, and confuse the dickens out of everyone with antics like using MP quotes in casual conversation, taking phone video of silly walks or impromptu YouTube performances of the Penis Song, and ensuring everyone at dinner that we are much too full, we couldn't possibly eat another bite because we are completely stuffed.Monty Python Day2014-10-05 06:00:002

Jack McDonald Burnett741This is a personal circle of mine, of aspiring authors, brand-newly published authors, and new-ishly published authors who still remember us little people.  This isn't a plus one, comment, reshare and tell everybody how handsome I am and I'll add you  to the circle "circle share," just a great collection of people dealing with similar challenges and similar opportunities.  I'd love to add you to it, if you're a soon-to-be or new author, and I'd love for you to add everybody in it, too if you're inclined.  Really great, fun, interesting writers.Note that if you're reading this on the Android app you won't be able to "see" the circle or add people from it.  Only works on the full G+ website.2014-03-30 03:42:25107012

Dan Thompson2,147Here is my circle of writers.  My suggestion to you new G+ folks is to add the entire circle as its own circle, i.e. "Dan's Writing Circle".  Over time, move your favorites over into your own growing array of circles. In particular, though, I'd say pay attention to John Ward, Evo Terra, Nathan Lowell, Brook Johnson, and Jefferson Smith.2014-02-22 19:51:53249212

Sam Sager3,743Science-Fiction and Fantasy Writers CircleIt's been a very long time since I've shared this circle. It is long over due. This is a great group of writers to follow. They range from the very well known to the aspiring, but all are worth following. I learn something new and am very entertained by these people everyday. If you or someone you know is a science-fiction or fantasy writer and would like to be a part of this circle please let me know.2013-12-22 01:05:22308413
Brittany Constable3,838You know, I haven't seen any NaNoWriMo shared circles going around yet.  Perhaps communities have made them a little redundant, but this is still one of my favorite things about the Plus, so I'm sharing away. The people in this circle have all either mentioned NaNoWriMo in posts or comments, or are in the NaNoWriMo 2013 community.  Please let me know if you:- are not in this circle and should be (this is the one time of year I'll circle anyone and everyone as long as they're doing NaNo)- are in the circle and shouldn't be- are doing NaNo, but would not like to be included in shared circlesA note about adding large circlesIn the past, I've added WriMos to both the NaNo circle and the general writers circle.  This has proven a mistake, since a lot of people who pipe up enthusiastically during November later disappear off G+, or just don't prove a good fit for my stream, and it leaves me spending a lot of time doing circle maintenance. So what I'm doing this year, and what I'd recommend others do as well, is add new people only to this circle (if they're not already in other circles) and keep the volume turned all the way down.  Then you can go to the separate stream and check people out, adding only the people you want to keep around to other circles. In a couple of months you can empty out the NaNo circle and clear out all the people who didn't make the cut.2013-10-23 17:06:17401404

Kimberly Hurlbut16,610The Favorites!I haven't shared a circle in a few weeks because I've been too lazy to get on the computer to create one. Since I was doing circle maintenance I thought this was the perfect time to put together some of my favorite people that make G+ awesome for me!These people create original posts, are artistic, intelligent and want to share their knowledge with the world, or just people that have made me laugh and engage with me often. I tried keeping the circle size fairly small so you're not hit with too many people at once.... So please  add this circle and share share share these favorites of mine! :o)2013-07-06 17:11:2910022210

John Ward7,493This is my circle for Beta Readers. This circle consists of people who have volunteered to read, evaluate, and critique stories written by other people. The only qualification to be in this group is that you have to be willing to read the work of one of the other members. The way the process works is that once you join, you need to add the circle. After you have added the circle, you can send messages to the members of the group letting them know when you have a story that you'd like to have someone review. Briefly share some details about your story: genre, word count, and synopsis. Then, one of the other members will reply letting you know that they're interested. After that you can work out the best way for you to share the story with one another... and that's it.If you're interested in joining the circle, simply leave a comment here. I'm happy to add you.2012-11-30 13:44:1239603

Nina Pelletier11,765I have been requested to share my writers circle many times over the last year, but I never felt right doing it. After 2 emails I received yesterday asking so kindly that I share it yet again, I figured it's time to do so.I have over 500 writers in my writers circle because, hey, that's why I'm here right? But sadly only 500 of them can be shared at once. So you won't get all of the wonderful writerly people I have met on this lovely world we call Google+, but here are 500 of them.  Enjoy and share. If I've missed any writers, please feel free to add them in the comments below.Thank you to this awesome community of literary quirkiness and genius. ♥  #writershelpingwriters   #writers  2012-09-12 15:13:0750121411

My feelings on Agents of SHIELD this morning, before starting episode 10 of season 1: "It's definitely picking up, but I'm still not quite feeling it."

My feelings on Agents of SHIELD this evening, having just finished episode 17 of season 1: "What do you mean my shift is over? Can't I just stay here at my desk and keep watching more?  I NEED TO KNOW."

So yes, that iO9 viewing order I found a while back was spot on: If you haven't watched it before, watch the pilot, pick up episode 6 ("FZZT"), then skip ahead to episode 10.  (Ep. 9 was pretty good, mainly because it was deliciously creepy.  Not so much on story.)

Think I might stop by the mall on my way home and pick up Winter Soldier so I can rewatch it in context.

Progress photo of the bathroom.  I never really thought of the old color as that dark, until we put the new color on top of it.  (It's a little more green than it appears here, this was as close as I could get it.)

This popped into my head while painting. Because when you're a stressball trying to finish a complex task on a slightly impossible deadline, sometimes you want to hear someone beat the shit out of her piano.

Ever since we moved in, there has been some mysterious yellow substance that had dripped down the bathroom walls.  I never really had a chance to think anything of it, and I figured it was just a stain I could paint over.

Then I went to sand down the walls... and discovered that it's sticky.

Eeeeeewwwwwwww.

Still no idea what it was, but that's an extra hour of work I hadn't really planned on...

Eeeeeewwwwwwww.

Still no idea what it was, but that's an extra hour of work I hadn't really planned on...___

Remember a long time ago when we had our drainage pipe overflow in the laundry room?  We couldn't find anything down there, so we figured it was just because we were running the washer and the dishwasher at the same time.  We've been careful to avoid that, and haven't had any problems...

...until last week, when it backed up with sewage.  (Luckily not very much, but still, eww.)  Turns out that we've got roots grown into our wastewater lines.  Hooray!  They bored a hole through to buy us some time, but they're clay pipes and starting to separate, so the whole thing's going to cost about $7K.  Which is money that we really don't have, and it's not covered by our insurance.

::sigh::  This throws a wrench into our plans for home and car upgrades.  For right now, we just have to keep everything limping along until we can shore up some more cash, and knock on every bit of wood we can find that nothing else breaks between now and summer.

So that was some stressful news to start off a very busy weekend leading to Halloween/NaNoWriMo kickoff.  On the agenda:

- Paint guest bathroom (spent my whole morning taping off edges)
- Take my car in for repairs
- Bake cookies
- Make pasta salad
- Get accessories for Halloween costumes
- Work a random overtime shift tomorrow morning
- Stop by game store

Plus my evenings for the next few days are all occupied, because my social schedule got weirdly full a couple of months back and I go out pretty much every damn night.

Looking at that list just makes me want a nap.  Stupid non-negotiable deadlines.  Stupid calendar.  Stupid lack of a time machine and/or robot maid.___

As I've started to build my Twitter presence, I've noticed that I get followed by somewhat random accounts, frequently promoting some sort of product or service.  I usually ignore them, but I got one just now that caught my eye, from an account called +Novlr.  It looked to be some sort of writing software, so I followed the link to novlr.org.

Holy shit, you guys.  Just look at that screenshot.  It's so sexy I might need a few minutes to myself.  This looks like it might be a viable replacement for my beloved but increasingly unreliable My Writing Spot.

So hell yes, I'm now eagerly awaiting my beta invitation, which will hopefully be here before Friday so I can play with this for NaNoWriMo.

You know what I want?  A smart pocket watch.

No, seriously.  Hear me out.

For the teeny-handed among us, the increasing size of smartphones is getting to be a serious problem.  My Galaxy S3 is just about as big as I can comfortably hold with one hand, although I can't really do more than unlock it without having to use both.  And sticking them in pants pockets is getting pretty much useless.  I can't tell you how many times I've accidentally turned off my phone just by bending at the waist.

Now, the husbandperson has a Moto 360 and he lurves it.  For at-a-glance information like notifications, text messages, Google Now, time checks, etc, it's damn handy.  I could definitely see myself using one, but again with my itty bitty appendages.  The 360 doesn't have the same overhang problem as the Gear models do, but I still don't have a full range ofmobilit... more »

So here's what I want: let me stow my big-beyond-all-sense phone in my bag or somewhere within range, but not necessarily accessible.  Then I can have a screen in my pocket the size of the Moto 360, or maybe even a little bigger, something that fits comfortably in my small-beyond-all-sense overly tight girl pockets.  (Girl pockets suck, for the record.)  It wouldn't have full functionality, but I wouldn't really need that, just the same voice controls and swipe that you get on the existing watches.

I mean, wearables are basically using your phone as a hotspot for smaller satellite screens anyway.  Let the phones keep growing, just give me a form factor I can actually use.  Hell, the 360 could even work as-is, just swap out the band for a case with a chain (and a cover to keep it from butt-dialing).

Seriously, +Google, make this happen.___

This tracks pretty well with my experience; I haven't received much in the way of straight-up harassment, but there's always been this weird sense that not all parties were on the same page about what "friendship" meant.  Even aside from the ugly explosion from a small subset of the culture recently, there's still a lot about the general mindset that's not particularly healthy.

Replacing our towel rack has become a bit of an ordeal.  So first there were wall anchors which had to come out, and the holes in the wall had to be filled and painted.

Yeah, about that...  The previous owners of the house left behind a bunch of paint, conveniently labeled with the rooms.  There wasn't one for the guest bathroom, but there was one that wasn't labeled and looked bluish, so I went with it.

Not so much.  So in swapping out a towel rack, I now need to paint the whole bathroom.  (Which contains the only shower in the house, mind.)

Well, I wasn't in love with the old color anyway...

Gone Girl spoilers

No seriously, spoilers

You've seen it already, right?

Okay.  I must say I appreciate the gaslighting about changing the ending.  I've been avoiding spoilers because I was told that the third act was different, so I was expecting some kind of major switch.  But it's not!  It plays out exactly the same as the finale of the book (except for the bit about the TV interview, which doesn't affect the substance at all).

Hats off to you, you sneaky bastards.

Weekend docket!  (My weekend.  It's probably not your weekend yet.  Sorry.)

- See Gone Girl at the fancy theater.  We have a Groupon, and I've been desperate to see this because I love the book.  (We would have seen it last weekend, but remote agents were in town, which always wipes out the calendar.)
- Take my car in for an oil change and top-off because the power steering is not so much with the turning in the past couple of days
- Clean all the things for INCOMING MOMMY VISIT
- Get our old entertainment center cleared off and listed on Craigslist
- Dig up some reading materials for NaNoPrep
- Get some of my Nightmare Before Christmas decorations put together and up

What pressing stuff is on your to-do list lately?  Are you doing NaNoWriMo this year?  I'm still building the Circle O' Doom...

Over the past few weeks, I've received a couple of emails from a university in Sydney.  They didn't appear to be spam or anything; I had to figure that someone had inadvertently used my email address to sign up for something instead of theirs.

Then I got three of them yesterday, so I tweeted my slight annoyance about it.

Turns out my Australian double was doing a vanity search, found my Twitter (since I've been working diligently to make sure that the first results for my name are mostly me), and saw the tweet.  So she emailed me, and I passed the messages along.

I love the internet.  It enables the weirdest shit to happen.

SATURDAY SCENES: Ignition

My bright smile never falters as I lean in and mutter to Katie, “The next one of those little piss-stains that tries grabbing my ass is gonna lose an arm.”

SATURDAY SCENES: Ignition

My bright smile never falters as I lean in and mutter to Katie, “The next one of those little piss-stains that tries grabbing my ass is gonna lose an arm.”

“Oh come on, Lacey,” she replies, her own grin equally fixed, “that would be way too much paperwork.”

“If it gets me off birthdays, it might be worth it.”

I don’t know why any kid would have a birthday party at the Mockingbird, anyway.  The decor is mental institution chic, I’m convinced that the food is actually elaborate performance art exploring the concept of “bland,” and we don’t provide a cake.  It’s like their parents are saying, We don’t love you, but we don’t have time to find an orphanage. This place isn’t even horrible enough to enjoy ironically.  You could say that about the whole damn town, really.

Before we can commiserate further, the two-top by the window catches my eye, fishing for their check.  They seem rather desperate to get away from the recess brigade.  You and me both, guys.  I battle briefly with our ancient computer and force the ticket to print.  “Why did Dr. Hasebe have to lose his funding?” I groan for the quintillionth time this year.  Landing the internship at PacChem last summer felt like winning the lottery—if the state of California offered chances at a research position involving explosives for two bucks a pop, anyway.  Going from that to fucking food service feels like I’m atoning for a past life as a particularly heinous dictator.  Every day I contemplate giving notice, and every day I remind myself that technically, I already have.  I know that if I try to check out early, Mom will just march me down here and make them take me back, so all I can do now is run out that clock.  Sixty-four more days...

The fidgety couple and I make pleasant noises at each other as I drop the blue faux leather folder.  The dude already has his card out.  I run it for him on autopilot.  My brain’s occupied with complex waitress calculus, weighing the progress and relative neglectedness of my tables to plot my course.  I try to plan a step or two in advance: any less is a one-way ticket to the weeds, but more than that and it will all fall apart anyway.  In general it’s a good philosophy, though right now I wish it were pointing me to another conclusion.  No way around it, the birthday party needs refills.  Son of a bitch.  With the two-top liberated, I fill up a pitcher of Coke, take a deep breath, and plaster on a smile.

I reach cautiously over a kid with dark spiky hair and an early start on acne.  “Hey,” he says, already snickering, “I hear you turn tricks.”

A death glare shatters my placid mask before I can rein it in.  Come on, Lacey, you’ve shrugged off worse than that in game chat.  Of course, in arena play I’d have the little bastard in my crosshairs before he ran out of synonyms for male genitalia.  “You don’t even know what that means,” I say with surprising calm.

Luckily for my fraying patience, the birthday boy smacks his skeezy friend upside the head.  “Don’t be an asshole,” he says, then adds, “but you do magic tricks, right?”

I narrowly suppress a sigh.  You pull a coin from a kid’s ear one time to stop him from shrieking, then word gets out and everyone wants to see the monkey dance.  I briefly lock eyes with a woman over at the parents’ table, the one who’s been calling all the shots.  In that moment, I can see the calculator in her skull preparing to adjust my tip.

My smile returns.  I set aside the pitcher and produce the deck of cards that’s never far from my reach.  “So you wanna see some magic?” I say.

A few heads bob; Birthday Boy looks totally enthralled.  I try some of my flashier shuffles.  It limbers up my fingers, builds the anticipation, lets me stall and think.  Once I feel like I’ve got everyone's attention and have some idea of how I’m going to play this, I square the deck and then fan it out in front of Birthday Boy.  “Pick a card, any card.”

He dithers over the spread of textured blue and white and pulls one out of the middle.  “Show everyone, but don’t show me,” I instruct.  He sweeps it face-out in a broad arc like he’s a game show presenter, and my smile becomes very slightly genuine.  “Okay, now put it back,” I say, and he complies.

Here’s the tricky part.  In one more-or-less smooth motion, I nudge the target card just barely out of place as I collapse the fan, then cut the deck and give the whole thing a couple of fake shuffles.  “Your turn,” I say, handing fifty-one cards to Birthday Boy.  “Shuffle the hell out of it.”

With all eyes on him, I slip the remaining card from my palm to my pocket, the card that I fervently hope is the one the kid picked.  I started messing with cards when I was around twelve or so, mainly as something to do with my hands.  I actually got pretty good, but with the stress of college applications and the general insanity of senior year, it’s been ages since I’ve had time for more than a stray shuffle.  The current probability of looking like an ass in front of a bunch of grade school kids is depressingly high.

Birthday Boy offers the deck back, but I shake my head.  “Pass it around,” I say.  “Let everyone take a turn.”

I work the table in the opposite direction of the traveling deck, refilling drinks and doing my best to look unconcerned.  Several other diners are now watching.  So no pressure or anything.  Not that the Mockingbird attracts a ton of people even at our busiest, but I get nervous performing for the audience of my bedroom mirror.  Sodas topped off, I deposit the emptied pitcher on a nearby table and watch the kids fumble with my cards.

By the time the stack makes it back to me, I’ve palmed the target card again.  I pluck the deck delicately back from the guest of honor and resume shuffling, almost idly.  “So, you seem like a pretty smart bunch,” I say.  “How am I going to do it?”

“It’s up your sleeve!” some kid offers.

I pause in manipulating the cards long enough to waggle a gauzy yellow arm at him.  This is one of my favorite tops for work: pretty enough that I enjoy wearing it, but I’m not so attached that I’d mourn to see it covered in ketchup; provides sufficient coverage to deter the pervs but still light so I can go into the kitchen without combusting.  “You would totally be able to see it,” I point out.

Murmurs of concession.  “You did something when you shuffled it,” another suggests.

“Ah, but even if I were cunningly keeping the same card on top, you all still had a chance to shuffle too.  So that's out.”

“I thought magicians weren’t supposed to reveal their secrets,” the brat next to Birthday Boy says.

“You know what?  You’re absolutely right.”  With that, I pluck the top card off the deck and throw it face-up onto the table.

The boys explode into a cacophony of disbelief and delight at the sight of the five of clubs.  The rest of my little audience applauds.  I pull my apron out to one side and give my best curtsey, beaming for real.  Birthday Boy examines the card reverently.  “Can you show me how to do that?” he asks, handing it back to me.

I wink.  “Some other time,” I say.  “Right now I think you’re gonna be too busy with cake.”

Every little head swivels toward Katie, wheeling in our rickety dessert cart with her usual impeccable timing.  The grocery store cake is iced with the Minecraft logo, complete with tiled green background and a little plastic Creeper.  I might have to consider liking this kid.  The party breaks out in an atonal chorus of “Happy Birthday,” then Katie and I work quickly to distribute the sugar rush.

I actually did carry purses in high school.  There was never very much in them, but I had one, you know?

Fast forward to college.  Specifically, fast forward to Disneyland.

Pockets were never, ever an issue with Disney costumes.  The trousers were all unisex, giving us four standard pockets.  Coats all had at least two outer pockets, unisex or gendered, and frequently had an inner pocket as well.  The Opera House costume, with its early 1900s silhouette, was probably the worst, and it still had one nice deep side pocket in the skirt, and the A/C was kept high enough that you could wear the women's coat, with its fantastic huge pockets, even in the summer.  See, there were certain things that each and every CM was required to have on them at all times (namely their ID and a reference guide), and most of us needed to have various things handy (rider switch passes,re-ads... more »

Because pockets.

No, seriously. I love pockets. And a skirt with pockets? Nearly impossible to find. At least a decent looking one with functional, usable pockets. Oooh, pockets. I just like saying pockets now.

Let's not forget the overall fit issues women typically have with clothing. I can't say I'm one size or another, because in Wrangler (the decent not Walmart ones), I'm a size 9. Anywhere else? 12.

I should probably just sew my own stuff.

Also, a commenter mentioned almost all eshakti dresses / skirts having pockets. Is this true? ___Story time!

What was a problem were lockers, which were limited and vulnerable and only accessible on breaks.  Having to stick your stuff in a locker meant adding a couple of extra minutes before you could clock in, which was not time I always had.  So I quickly learned how to get by with just the stuff I could stash on my person.

This carried over into my civilian life.  While I enjoy skirts and dresses and such, functionally I wear jeans (and only jeans with four full-sized pockets) almost exclusively.  I've recently started carrying a bag, but I don't carry it everywhere, and still tend to rely on just my pockets.

So yes, I'm pretty much locked out of "fashion" because of my inexplicable need to have stuff with me that is easily accessible.  A designer who managed to make clothes that were cute, affordable, and had sufficient onboard storage would have me as a customer for life.

It's a teeny Lego NES!  That plays hundreds of NES and SNES games!  ::muppetflails::

The RetroPie gaming case for the Raspberry Pi.
I ended up having to make a few adjustments as I built, and had to come up with a solution for my minor screwup (I used the measurements for the Raspberry Pi B, and bought the B+, so not only was the case a couple of cm too small, but the opening for the USB connectors is far too small to accommodate all four. ___It's a teeny Lego NES!  That plays hundreds of NES and SNES games!  ::muppetflails::

An interesting analysis of the rather unexpected news out of the Supreme Court.  Personally, I think that they're waiting for the split circuit, so all eyes are going to be on the case pending in the 6th.

Yeah, I don't do renames very well.  I was still calling the Honda Center the Pond for years after it changed (or the Honda Ponda because I am four years old and find that amusing).  So I'm probably still going to refer to Oklahoma Joe's.  Joe's Kansas City is just generic.

Are you registered to vote?

Midterm elections in the US are November 4th.  I know midterms aren't as sexy as a presidential year, but voting is still important!  This link at Rock the Vote lets you know the registration deadlines for your state, and the site also has tons of other resources for making sure you're ready to go.

Hey, I'm migrating my NaNoWriMo Prep for Pantsers series from last year over to the blog!  Because it was awesome, not because I'm shamelessly recycling old posts so I don't have to write anything new.  Don't give me that look.

Who's in for NaNo this year?  I need to clean out my old NaNo circle and start building the new one.

We have a bed frame!  We also have a physics puzzle.  I think we're going to end up having to take it apart again to get it through the door.  Since we have no mattress and do have a rather large entertainment center still in that room, we may also have to just leave it in pieces until we've cleared more space.

Ah well, at least that's one thing off my list.

I don't think the locals understand IKEA.  I overheard several people today who seemed utterly perplexed at how to buy something they saw in the showroom.  (Write down the numbers on the tag and go downstairs, people.  Not that difficult.)  Down in the as-is area, we spotted exactly the bed frame we'd been eyeing for the guest bedroom (except the wrong color, but paint is a thing), and asked why it was there.  Someone had bought it, tried to build it, then gave up and brought it back.

So we snagged it, of course.  Your ineptitude is my 20% discount.  Now we just need a mattress...

It's been a while since we've done a #wipwednesday , and this one is an exercise in frustration.

So here we have a commission/art exchange for +Laura Toivola, which is a bit delayed because it took me forEVer to find fabric that was the correct color, size, and weave so that I didn't have to fill in the background.  Because of that, I can't use gridlines as I have done on other complex projects.  So my thinking here was to find the middle of the fabric and the middle of the pattern (you can see the horizontal crease that marks the midpoint).  I ran through one length of a couple of different colors until I found my way to an edge, then I traced along the outside with the background color.  I filled in a couple more color lengths to help keep me honest, because I realized that it would be really easy to miss a stitch without realizing it due to a lack of any other reference. Ke... more »

I traced around until I got to the top of her head, then I started filling in the entire thing.  Working my way down, everything was all well and good, until I got to her sleeve on the left side and could not for the life of me figure out why the pattern wasn't matching up.

It's because I missed a stitch while tracing.  One single stitch.  So now the filled in part is one column off of all the stuff below it.

It's not a catastrophic failure, because I can frog the outline and various loose bits.  Of course, it means I have to frog the outline and various loose bits, which is time-consuming and messy and eye-strainy.

Gaaaargh.___

You know, as much as I love Black Widow, I'm not all that interested in seeing a solo movie.  I think that she's interesting specifically because she's such a great foil to the various other Avengers, and because up through Winter Soldier you could never be entirely certain what she was up to or what side she was on (which you kind of lose if she's the protagonist).

But a Black Widow/Hawkeye teamup?  Fuck.  Yeah.  Bonus points if they keep it platonic.

The new IKEA in Kansas City

(Picture is of a random IKEA)

We finally got over to check out the new IKEA yesterday, since we were in the area having lunch with a friend.

Verdict: It's huge!  I'm pretty sure it's bigger than the one we used to go to in Costa Mesa.  It was crawling with people but not really crowded, and we didn't have any trouble finding parking or getting to the stuff we wanted to examine more closely.  We now have our eye on the perfect dining table and are still contemplating guest beds.

We did not try out the restaurant because we'd just eaten.  Although we did pick up frozen meatballs, naturally.
