Jack McDonald Burnett741This is a personal circle of mine, of aspiring authors, brand-newly published authors, and new-ishly published authors who still remember us little people.  This isn't a plus one, comment, reshare and tell everybody how handsome I am and I'll add you  to the circle "circle share," just a great collection of people dealing with similar challenges and similar opportunities.  I'd love to add you to it, if you're a soon-to-be or new author, and I'd love for you to add everybody in it, too if you're inclined.  Really great, fun, interesting writers.Note that if you're reading this on the Android app you won't be able to "see" the circle or add people from it.  Only works on the full G+ website.2014-03-30 03:42:25107012

Dan Thompson2,147Here is my circle of writers.  My suggestion to you new G+ folks is to add the entire circle as its own circle, i.e. "Dan's Writing Circle".  Over time, move your favorites over into your own growing array of circles. In particular, though, I'd say pay attention to John Ward, Evo Terra, Nathan Lowell, Brook Johnson, and Jefferson Smith.2014-02-22 19:51:53249212

Sam Sager3,743Science-Fiction and Fantasy Writers CircleIt's been a very long time since I've shared this circle. It is long over due. This is a great group of writers to follow. They range from the very well known to the aspiring, but all are worth following. I learn something new and am very entertained by these people everyday. If you or someone you know is a science-fiction or fantasy writer and would like to be a part of this circle please let me know.2013-12-22 01:05:22308413
Brittany Constable3,838You know, I haven't seen any NaNoWriMo shared circles going around yet.  Perhaps communities have made them a little redundant, but this is still one of my favorite things about the Plus, so I'm sharing away. The people in this circle have all either mentioned NaNoWriMo in posts or comments, or are in the NaNoWriMo 2013 community.  Please let me know if you:- are not in this circle and should be (this is the one time of year I'll circle anyone and everyone as long as they're doing NaNo)- are in the circle and shouldn't be- are doing NaNo, but would not like to be included in shared circlesA note about adding large circlesIn the past, I've added WriMos to both the NaNo circle and the general writers circle.  This has proven a mistake, since a lot of people who pipe up enthusiastically during November later disappear off G+, or just don't prove a good fit for my stream, and it leaves me spending a lot of time doing circle maintenance. So what I'm doing this year, and what I'd recommend others do as well, is add new people only to this circle (if they're not already in other circles) and keep the volume turned all the way down.  Then you can go to the separate stream and check people out, adding only the people you want to keep around to other circles. In a couple of months you can empty out the NaNo circle and clear out all the people who didn't make the cut.2013-10-23 17:06:17401404

Kimberly Hurlbut16,610The Favorites!I haven't shared a circle in a few weeks because I've been too lazy to get on the computer to create one. Since I was doing circle maintenance I thought this was the perfect time to put together some of my favorite people that make G+ awesome for me!These people create original posts, are artistic, intelligent and want to share their knowledge with the world, or just people that have made me laugh and engage with me often. I tried keeping the circle size fairly small so you're not hit with too many people at once.... So please  add this circle and share share share these favorites of mine! :o)2013-07-06 17:11:2910022210

John Ward7,493This is my circle for Beta Readers. This circle consists of people who have volunteered to read, evaluate, and critique stories written by other people. The only qualification to be in this group is that you have to be willing to read the work of one of the other members. The way the process works is that once you join, you need to add the circle. After you have added the circle, you can send messages to the members of the group letting them know when you have a story that you'd like to have someone review. Briefly share some details about your story: genre, word count, and synopsis. Then, one of the other members will reply letting you know that they're interested. After that you can work out the best way for you to share the story with one another... and that's it.If you're interested in joining the circle, simply leave a comment here. I'm happy to add you.2012-11-30 13:44:1239603

Yes!  Preach it!  I'm so tired of people saying that Disney princesses teach girls that they just need to wait around for a man to solve all of their problems.  The only one, the only one who did that was Snow bloody White, and even then she managed to sort out some shit on her own.  (Aurora's borderline because she's nearly a non-entity in her own movie, but meeting Philip creates her problem rather than solving it.)  For every single other one, getting a guy is part of what happens when she goes after what she wants, what she thinks is right, or both.

Behold, the SQUID OF DESTINY!

I picked up all three sets of Rory's Story cubes, plus a few dice to use along with my Cyberpunk 2020 handbook (namely, with its insane character creation tables).

A sound investment for NaNoWriMo.  I think it will be a hit at write-ins.

Our Halloween group.  That's me as Oswin, and my friend Caleb's ridiculous Cyberman that he spent two months on.  (Taking it out for a test drive revealed some mobility issues that he's hoping to address before Planet Comicon.)

Not pictured are our trio of Daleks (two toddlers and the mama, who were adorable but mom doesn't want pictures of them online) and our photographer who was a fantastic lazy TARDIS.

I love +Songza's '90s playlists.  A nice burst of happy nostalgia for a day of writing.

(I'm actually listening to it through +Google Play on my phone, but they don't really have an easy way to share a playlist to G+ from there, which seems like a bit of a fail to me.)

To done:

- Got some writing done (although not enough)
- Swapped out threads in my traveling cross-stitch bag from the Alice project to the new Frozen mini project
- Ripped a bunch of DVDs
- Mailed off a bunch of stuff

#HeyInternetLookAtMyFood !  This is fried chicken atop a bowl of mashed potatoes, gravy, and corn.  It comes from a food court joint run by a Chinese family and is possibly the best fried chicken I've ever had.  (Geographical concerns keep me from doing a side-by-side test with Mrs. Knott's.)  Seriously, this thing is deep magic.

Now we're going to curl up on the couch and watch a movie, and then I have more writing to do.

- Got some writing done (although not enough)
- Swapped out threads in my traveling cross-stitch bag from the Alice project to the new Frozen mini project
- Ripped a bunch of DVDs
- Mailed off a bunch of stuff
- Stopped by Michaels for project supplies
- Picked up dinner

I'M BACK!

I had gotten painfully behind on Doctor Who, and so once the first part of the season finale aired, I decided that the only way to remain spoiler-free was to avoid my stream entirely until I had a chance to catch up.  That took a little longer than expected, so consequently I've been posting occasionally, but hadn't actually read my stream in a few weeks.  (And I still managed to get a couple of major points spoiled for me.  Fuckers.)

So now I'm free to actually start reading all of the things you lovely people post again.  Although in a fairly limited capacity, because I'm still 3,000 words behind in NaNoWriMo because of course I am.

I have missed you all, my dears.  Here, have some adorable fan art of Honey Lemon, who is easily one of my favorite characters ever.

Hey, speaking of cross-stitched gifts, here's one I finished in secret way back in February.  It was a birthday gift for a nerdy friend's kids (the ones who were our little Dalek candybeards on Halloween).

I really loved this pattern.  It was the first one that I attempted without gridlines, and I thought it turned out really well.  I took close-ups of each letter because there's some really fun detail on the characters.

(Man, you can tell I'm tired because my vocabulary is about a fifth grade level.  Really.)

She's done!  Completed the eye-bleeding task of combing through to find the missed stitches, so now this piece is ready to be ironed and sent off to its new home.  (+Laura Toivola, you'll need to DM me your shipping info.)

Next project is to finish up a sheet of patches and then do the same eye-bleeding task for the princess/villains piece.  Remember that one?  Boy, it'll be nice to finish it sometime before the heat death of the sun.

Yes!

COMMENCING ANOMALY ANALYSIS

Raf leaned against a window, allowing the foot traffic to flow unseeing past him.  With the temporal shield up, people would part unconsciously around him even if he stood in the middle of the sidewalk, but he always felt weird about leaving the gap of empty space.  He ignored the stats flickering at the edge of his vision; they wouldn't make sense to him until the report compiled anyway, and usually not even then.

Instead, he watched the girl as she looked around, bewildered, even climbing a lamppost for a better view.  He'd been aware of someone following him, but he hadn't thought much of it.  It wasn't the first time, after all.  He knew that he looked like an easy mark, and he usually let the pickpockets do their thing.  They wouldn't be able to reach anything except a few local coins -- he was always veryvigila... more »

SHIELD ACTIVE

They wouldn't be able to reach anything except a few local coins -- he was always very vigilant about that -- and he figured they needed the money anyway.  He could never stay for long in the poorer neighborhoods because the temptation to throw piles of cash at every hungry face tore at him, and it took an effort to remind himself that his primary directive was to observe.  Trying to intervene just caused problems.  Case in point...

His stomach had plummeted through his soles when he saw her face.  He hadn't needed his optics to helpfully pop up her contact card in order to recognize her, even dressed as she was.  Her unusual clothes were the detail that worried him the most.  He wasn't as concerned about her having found him as he was about the fact that she was looking, that she was going to such lengths to do so.  It seemed that he wasn't going to be able to escape his mistakes as easily as he'd hoped.

She hopped down from her perch and walked away, shoulders slumped.  For a wild moment, Raf thought about going after her.  Chasing her down, pulling her into the bubble, trying to apologize, to explain...  But where would he even start?  Besides, it wouldn't do any good, and he'd get kicked off the project besides.

A message flashed up. ANOMALY OUT OF RANGE.  PROCEED 100 METERS EAST TO REENGAGE.  He flicked the text aside with a twitch of his eyes.  In its place appeared ANALYSIS INCOMPLETE.  PARTIAL DATA WILL UPLOAD ON RELINK.

He tipped his head back against the glass.  "Dammit," he muttered.  That was the last thing he'd wanted to hear.  He was glad now that he'd resisted going after the girl, even though the desire still lingered.  There was no comfort, no help he could provide her but to finish the job.  "Kala," he said, "drop temporal shield."

SHIELD INACTIVE

His skin tingled as the bubble popped, and he glanced quickly around.  Had anyone been looking in his direction, it would have seemed to them as if he materialized from nothing.  Luckily there were no gasps of disbelief, no dropped jaws.  Thank god for cities.  The weirdness could plop directly onto their heads, and most people would still find a way to ignore it or rationalize it away.

Satisfied that he hadn't created another fire to be put out, Raf set off down the road as fast as he dared.  He was going to have to bring the rest of the team in on this, no choice in the matter now.  Meetings.  As if the rest of it weren't bad enough.

I'd heard quite mixed reviews, but we had a Groupon for the fancy theater expiring today, so we went to see The Book of Life.  I actually quite enjoyed it.  I was mainly there for the visuals, which, yes, were extremely impressive.  I find a lot of times that once you settle into the visual aesthetic, you just stop noticing, so it's not enough to carry the movie.  But The Book of Life consistently introduces new and breathtaking setpieces, effectively staged to allow you to fully appreciate the artistry.

The writing is a little uneven, to be sure; it's a fairy tale, so the characters are somewhat archetypical, and none of the arcs were anything all that new.  Maria in particular is really the embodiment of everything wrong with the "strong female character" these days; she felt like a throwback to the early '90s when writers were just starting to figure out thatfemal... more »

The writing is a little uneven, to be sure; it's a fairy tale, so the characters are somewhat archetypical, and none of the arcs were anything all that new.  Maria in particular is really the embodiment of everything wrong with the "strong female character" these days; she felt like a throwback to the early '90s when writers were just starting to figure out that female characters needed to do more than stand around looking pretty, but hadn't quite gotten as far as "just make them people" and were throwing sassy traits at the wall to see what would stick.  I found the humor hit and miss, which is usually the case when it's overly broad, although when it worked, it worked really well.  The pacing is... well, it's never bad, but it's definitely uneven.  There's not really a sense until fairly late in the game that all of this is building to a specific climax, and I could have done without most of the cutaways to the frame story.

I do think it's worth seeing, though.  It's nice to have a film about a non-Western culture (that doesn't end up still being about Western culture), and the visuals really are worth the ticket price all on their own.  It's a solid kids' movie where lessons are learned and everything works out in the end.  (Slight spoiler, but I particularly liked how they resolved the love triangle.  So many stories seem to bend themselves backwards trying to avoid having one of the parties make a difficult decision.)

So yeah, go catch it while it's still in theaters.___

Just so y'all know, I'm radio silent until 1) I've rebuilt my buffer for NaNoWriMo (I wrote myself into a corner yesterday and had to get it untangled, which is rather appropriate for a story about time travelers fixing paradoxes), and 2) I've caught up with Doctor Who, on which I am pathetically behind.  The last one I watched was Time Heist, that's how bad it is.

So shut yer faces with the spoilers.

Midnight Write-In: Mischief Managed

I really did not want to get up and go to the write-in for #nanowrimo .  I was in my nice warm bed, I had just gotten to sleep, and I was oh God so tired.  But I dragged my sorry ass out of bed and got went up there (although my compromise was not wearing my Oswin costume, because I just could not be arsed to bring yet another bag to change into).

In the last 72 hours, I have:

- painted the bathroom start to finish
- bought a car
- unpacked and put away all the winter clothes
- done ALL THE LAUNDRY (seriously, like six loads)
- made a huge thing of pasta salad
- finished my Oswin costume

Plus I worked half a shift and met friends at Dave & Buster's.

Am I done? Pshaw! I'm going trick or treating with some friends, and then trying to grab a few hours' sleep before a midnight writing marathon for NaNoWriMo. Of course, I'm not staying the whole time. No, I have to leave early to go work a ten hour shift.

A sound investment for NaNoWriMo.  I think it will be a hit at write-ins.

Progress photo of the bathroom.  I never really thought of the old color as that dark, until we put the new color on top of it.  (It's a little more green than it appears here, this was as close as I could get it.)

This popped into my head while painting. Because when you're a stressball trying to finish a complex task on a slightly impossible deadline, sometimes you want to hear someone beat the shit out of her piano.

Ever since we moved in, there has been some mysterious yellow substance that had dripped down the bathroom walls.  I never really had a chance to think anything of it, and I figured it was just a stain I could paint over.

Then I went to sand down the walls... and discovered that it's sticky.

Eeeeeewwwwwwww.

Still no idea what it was, but that's an extra hour of work I hadn't really planned on...

Remember a long time ago when we had our drainage pipe overflow in the laundry room?  We couldn't find anything down there, so we figured it was just because we were running the washer and the dishwasher at the same time.  We've been careful to avoid that, and haven't had any problems...

...until last week, when it backed up with sewage.  (Luckily not very much, but still, eww.)  Turns out that we've got roots grown into our wastewater lines.  Hooray!  They bored a hole through to buy us some time, but they're clay pipes and starting to separate, so the whole thing's going to cost about $7K.  Which is money that we really don't have, and it's not covered by our insurance.

::sigh::  This throws a wrench into our plans for home and car upgrades.  For right now, we just have to keep everything limping along until we can shore up some more cash, andknock on... more »

::sigh::  This throws a wrench into our plans for home and car upgrades.  For right now, we just have to keep everything limping along until we can shore up some more cash, and knock on every bit of wood we can find that nothing else breaks between now and summer.

So that was some stressful news to start off a very busy weekend leading to Halloween/NaNoWriMo kickoff.  On the agenda:

- Paint guest bathroom (spent my whole morning taping off edges)
- Take my car in for repairs
- Bake cookies
- Make pasta salad
- Get accessories for Halloween costumes
- Work a random overtime shift tomorrow morning
- Stop by game store

Plus my evenings for the next few days are all occupied, because my social schedule got weirdly full a couple of months back and I go out pretty much every damn night.

Looking at that list just makes me want a nap.  Stupid non-negotiable deadlines.  Stupid calendar.  Stupid lack of a time machine and/or robot maid.___

The full Phase 3 lineup.  Captain Marvel, Black Panther, Inhumans...  I officially cannot even.

Don't cry, DC, you've got Aquaman, right?

As I've started to build my Twitter presence, I've noticed that I get followed by somewhat random accounts, frequently promoting some sort of product or service.  I usually ignore them, but I got one just now that caught my eye, from an account called +Novlr.  It looked to be some sort of writing software, so I followed the link to novlr.org.

Holy shit, you guys.  Just look at that screenshot.  It's so sexy I might need a few minutes to myself.  This looks like it might be a viable replacement for my beloved but increasingly unreliable My Writing Spot.

So hell yes, I'm now eagerly awaiting my beta invitation, which will hopefully be here before Friday so I can play with this for NaNoWriMo.

Score one for social media marketing.

You know what I want?  A smart pocket watch.

No, seriously.  Hear me out.

For the teeny-handed among us, the increasing size of smartphones is getting to be a serious problem.  My Galaxy S3 is just about as big as I can comfortably hold with one hand, although I can't really do more than unlock it without having to use both.  And sticking them in pants pockets is getting pretty much useless.  I can't tell you how many times I've accidentally turned off my phone just by bending at the waist.

Now, the husbandperson has a Moto 360 and he lurves it.  For at-a-glance information like notifications, text messages, Google Now, time checks, etc, it's damn handy.  I could definitely see myself using one, but again with my itty bitty appendages.  The 360 doesn't have the same overhang problem as the Gear models do, but I still don't have a full range ofmobilit... more »

So here's what I want: let me stow my big-beyond-all-sense phone in my bag or somewhere within range, but not necessarily accessible.  Then I can have a screen in my pocket the size of the Moto 360, or maybe even a little bigger, something that fits comfortably in my small-beyond-all-sense overly tight girl pockets.  (Girl pockets suck, for the record.)  It wouldn't have full functionality, but I wouldn't really need that, just the same voice controls and swipe that you get on the existing watches.

I mean, wearables are basically using your phone as a hotspot for smaller satellite screens anyway.  Let the phones keep growing, just give me a form factor I can actually use.  Hell, the 360 could even work as-is, just swap out the band for a case with a chain (and a cover to keep it from butt-dialing).

Seriously, +Google, make this happen.___

This tracks pretty well with my experience; I haven't received much in the way of straight-up harassment, but there's always been this weird sense that not all parties were on the same page about what "friendship" meant.  Even aside from the ugly explosion from a small subset of the culture recently, there's still a lot about the general mindset that's not particularly healthy.

You know it's nearing NaNoWriMo when I'm linkhopping my way down the TV Tropes rabbit hole on purpose.  An especially clear indication is the fact that I successfully pulled myself away from a fascinating analysis of the Hitler Time Travel Exemption Act.  (By bookmarking it to read later, naturally.)
