Danial Hallock10,323No Name NeededIt's getting close to the Holiday Season, and the whole point of this particular part of the season is to "give thanks" to the people (or, in America, things) that have positively impacted your life.  For me, these are those people. You all should remember my initial circle The Three Hundred (http://goo.gl/kqE8h) which was well received at 251 +1s and 48 reshares.  This circle was my first round of hyper-vetting individuals for circling, based on a lot of criteria that was centered around high quality content and a high level of engagement.  I think I combed through about 2,300 profiles on a one-by-one basis before arriving at the final product. That circle then morphed into the The Collaborative Circle (http://goo.gl/Ex9ai) which was less publicized, but still racked in 90 +1s and 13 reshares.  This circle was based on the premise that "If four people from The Three Hundred enjoy person X, then I should also enjoy them."  Well, the combination of these circles lead to an interesting scenario in which I was able to locate all stars through a combination of overlap and relevance (via Google algorithms).  Out popped these twenty five individuals, and I could not be happier with the results.  These are twenty-five individuals in which I am subscribed, their posts are always enjoyable as well as insightful, and the notification stream keeps me engaged throughout the day.Whether you're looking at the tech news from +Mike Elgan, the social and scientific commentary of +Yonatan Zunger, or the general internet awesomeness that is the enigma of +Sarah Rios, you're not going to be disappointed.I normally only notify people that are contained within a circle, but these people are too awesome not to be guilty of a little plus-spam;  feel free to request a removal from the notified (all) circles.(Link to this post: http://goo.gl/AlsXG5) #nonameneeded   #circleshare   #sharingiscaring   #sharedcircle  2013-11-13 23:53:242639671

Jake Kern24,894The Silver DonutBeen wanting to do a circle share for a while, but I just haven't wanted to put in the work to get a group of 100 for another #GoldenDonut. Instead, I grabbed the top 500 from my Google relevancy algorithm. Then I removed a couple people who don't like being in circle shares & some pages so I could stretch the 500 a bit. (For instance, both +Melissa Bagley & +Melissa Ann Bagley Photography would be in the circle--in the top 25, actually--but I just included Melissa's personal profile even though you should circle both.)Many amazing people in here. Thank you for making this corner of the Internet worthwhile.Peace. #SilverDonut  2013-07-13 22:19:3849915023134
Mz Maau10,204I rarely share circles, and I regret to inform, this is not the promised #CircleDirk , rather, it's a circle I've been semi-maintaining since last spring, when it was created for +Pierce Arner to jump-start his Plus experience.Today, I'm resharing the current version on behalf of +Søren Dalsgaard Brath, who, like Pierce, is looking for new content for his stream.I figure he and I probably have a chunk of overlap, so I've added a few extras he might not yet know about. Some notes about the curation of this circle:I've tried to set aside those who have not posted recently, and I've tried to only include those who post publicly, or to extended circles.  I may have missed a few, and if you're in this circle and would like to be permanently removed, please let me know. This is not the final version, as I'm not sure such a thing is possible. This circle DOES come with a warning:You will, most likely, NOT enjoy everyone in this circle.  I, like many, have eclectic tastes, and I'm still a bit gun-shy after seeing some of the explosions from last year's crossing of the streams, so PLEASE, edit this circle to your liking with that in mind.If I ping you, you're in the circle.  There is no expectation or requirement to add this circle, it's merely a courtesy ping.  Again, if you would like to be removed from any future circle shares, please let me know. And yes, I promise, I'm still working on the #CircleDirk .Also note:  This is NOT an indication of who I like best, though some are included in this circle.  It is simply meant to be a sample of the diversity I follow.#PinkAndFluffyPersonsOfQuestionableRepute2013-06-22 16:38:09164143576

TV Review: Gotham S01E09 - Harvey Dent

It's been a while since I checked into Gotham with a review, but I have been watching it every week. The show is more compelling than I would have predicted from the first episode. Why review this particular episode? Well it is called Harvey Dent. And that should catch the attention of anyone with more than a passing familiarity with the Batman mythos.

Gotham's biggest strength so far has been its cast of actors.  Whether it's Ben McKenzie as the earnest Jim Gordon, Robin Lord Taylor as a perfectly cast Penguin or Donal Logue as a lovably slovenly Harvey Bullock, this is a cast that makes the most of everything they're given. The plots themselves are relatively pedestrian really, but much like with Batman himself it is the cast of characters that enlivens things.

TV Review: The Flash S01E05 - Plastique

Although I'm watching it weekly it's been a while since I checked into The Flash with a review. So let's take a look at episode 5 Plastique.

While its TV sibling Arrow has, largely, steered clear of super powered characters it seems The Flash fully embraces them. Right from the pilot episode where it gave us a reimagined Weather Wizard, the show has not only openly embraced super powers, but also the, rather goofy, villains that are Flash's Rogues Gallery. Plastique, however, is not traditionally a Flash villain but rather a sparring partner for Captain Atom. As, I'm sure it's no coincidence, is General Weiling.

I'm not much for planning out stories in advance beyond a few paragraphs that say where I think I'm going. I certainly don't map out characters and backstory.

But when writing a series of serials using the same characters and locations, it is kind of important to maintain a certain level of consistency.

Some people use notepads, others use Scrivener. I like to be web based. I considered setting up a full wiki, but I don't actually like wiki's. I find the UI actively unfriendly.

So instead, why not just create a custom post-type in Wordpress for it and add it the information to my blog.

Book Review: The Paper Magician by Charlie N. Holmberg
http://www.eoghann.com/book-review-paper-magician-charlie-n-holmberg

This was an enjoyable book to read but proves to be a remarkably frustrating one to review. The Paper Magician is aimed primarily at the Young Adult audience and is set in an alternate late Victorian era where magic seems to be tightly integrated into society. In fact it would appear to have taken the place of science (though that may be an over simplification).

You're likely to instinctively compare The Paper Magician with Harry Potter because there are some surface similarities, like references to a school for magicians and the young adult vibe. But, this is a smaller and more intimate story. Coming in at a mere 224 pages it is very brief by fantasy standards and though that is not an inherently bad thing some of my criticisms may result from the... more »

The next time my wife asks to borrow my phone I will insist on a deposit.

She dropped it in the snow and we spent 15 minutes before we found it again. I'm just hoping the snow was cold enough that not much moisture got in.

It's supposed to be somewhat water resistant I believe.

519 words written towards ZombieMart Part 1,

I'll take it because I got a bit of editing done on The Wolves of West Virginia and I got a blog post done.

No zombies yet though. But they're coming. Basically I've only covered the first paragraph of my outline. At which rate this part will be 2,595 words long. We'll see.

The Wolves of West Virginia Part 7 - Kiss and Make Up
https://medium.com/p/2b741f1b758a

I felt my knees wobble and let the last of the fire die out completely, sinking down to the ground. Magic drains you. The energy has to come from somewhere after all. And I had been tapping one form or another for hours now.

I glance round at the wolves. They could tear out my throat in a matter of seconds. I could only hope that they had understood enough of what they had witnessed to know that I was not their enemy.

When people start talking about how technology is cutting us off from appreciating the world or worthwhile interactions with other human beings they are making one fundamental mistake.

We never actually did that in the first place.

What we actually did was looked at scenery and said "that's pretty" or had incredibly tedious conversations about the weather with people we didn't like very much but were obliged to socialize with.

Writers spend far too much time romanticizing not only the notion of being a writer, but the act of writing and even worse the process of writing.

It's not magic, it's not a black box you can't see into that just produces amazing things. In fact it's really not that special at all.

It is repetition and craft, but mainly repetition.

What Are The Most Significant SciFi Books Of The 60s?

So I'm in the first stages of pulling together information to tackle the 1960s in my History of Science Fiction series. Man what a decade. The raw list of books alone takes up most of 2,000 words.

I have to weed this down to key influential authors or individual books. And there are some huge names here.

What do you think are the most significant fantasy and science fiction books from the 60s?

Book Review: The Accidental Alchemist by Gigi Pandian

Urban Fantasy is an extremely popular genre and one that supports quite a range of styles. With The Accidental Alchemist Gigi Pandian may have come up with an entirely new sub-genre, or at least one I was not previously familiar with. It is part mystery, part recipe book!

I'm exaggerating here, but only slightly. The book is a light-hearted one that certainly belongs in the Urban Fantasy fold, though marking itself apart with an absence of werewolves, vampires or demons. There is a gargoyle though. A French one.

Looking For Beta Readers

So the final part of The Wolves of West Virginia will probably go up on Medium any time now (well, assuming +John Ward decides to publish it) and I've still working on the cover which I think is coming along nicely. And as I mentioned before Zombiemart is plotted.

So again I'll put out the call for beta readers to do one more pass through The Wolves of West Viriginia stamp out the typos and maybe point out a few rough edges that need sanding before compiling it for the Amazon version.

Any takers?

If not I'll probably start asking in some of the writing communities, but I thought I'd post to my stream first.

It's interesting sometimes I find that as I'm writing my review, my feelings about the book/show change. In this case I walked away from the book somewhat disappointed.

But once I started analysing it for the review I found that my tone became substantially more negative as the bad increasingly outweighed the good.

What Is The Master Plan?

When I talk about my writing, I keep referring to a master plan. And there really is one. Admittedly, it's gone through several refinements and will likely go through a few more as things continue. But there is a roadmap that I'm following quite carefully, and slowly.

Planning Around Limitations

The first thing to understand is that this is a project operating under a few of non-negotiable limitations. Primarily that it is a hobby and not a profession. This is not my attempt to make writing a primary income source. My advice on that would be significantly different.

Narrowing It Down To One

Okay so naturally no two people could agree on the best cover. That's always the way. But I've tried to gather elements from all the feedback and pull it together. And this is why, if you can afford it, you really ought to just pay a designer to do these things for you.

I'm going with the minimal style partly because I like it but also for the practical reason that it will be easier to maintain as a theme for future covers because there are a lot less design elements to keep consistent.

The title uses two fonts to give a suggestion of both fantasy (Mason Serif or at least a free variant)and detective (AR BONNIE) and also symbolising a certain culture clash present in the story.

My byline is now also a serif font (Charlemagne Std) which I think fits the overall look of the cover better than the previous san-serif choice.

The "Of" was moved to before "West" which solved some spacing issues there.

I've also simplified the tag line at the bottom and shrunk it a bit because of commentary that the cover was overly cluttered.

Finally, some people felt the contrast was just too harsh and hard to look at (at least on a computer screen, paper would probably be different) so I changed the main background to a light bluish grey which I think dramatically eases contrast.

Thank you to all of you who offered an opinion. Even if it was in the minority or I didn't use it, I do appreciate you taking the time.___

Yet More Potential Covers

The first one is my favorite in a lot of ways. I'm really liking the stark simplicity of it. Though it may be a bit too harsh or modern perhaps?

I've been able to solve the capitalized O problem +David Grigg noted with these fonts and I like the combination of a fantasy font with something that gives a hint of art deco styling.

Thanks to +Daniel Towers for the suggestions about using different fonts on the capitals and also the double use of the W.

Beta Readers
I think I need some

So I'm working on the final part of The Wolves of West Virginia which I hope to publish tonight/tomorrow. Which means I need to start moving forward on the next steps in the master plan. _Zombiemart_ is already plotted so I'll be writing that soon.

The idea is the compile The Wolves of West Virginia and release as a novelette (technically it's too short for novella apparently) on Amazon. Unfortunately right now this is a project that has to fund itself (Christmas, Disney World, car, etc). So while I'd like to throw money at an artist for a book cover and an editor to help clean up the story, it's just not going to happen at the moment. If I can make he master plan work, I should be able to reinvest a little bit in the future.

I've been noodling around with potential cover ideas and will have something functional if not brilliant. Which leaves the editing issue.

Failing a proper editor I think what I need is some beta-readers to catch the inevitable slew of typos and maybe sand down a few rough edges. Any volunteers.

I promise to be argumentative and defensive about every single suggestion you make. Your input will be welcomed.

It would probably help if you at least liked the current version mind you. :D___

Dunning–Kruger effect

This, I think, explains most of the commentary I see on the internet on running a company/how to program a television channel/manufacturing hardware/managing a project/Public Relations/etc.

The number of armchair experts (who have never actually done the job and yet clearly and definitively know what they are talking about) is quite impressive.

Book Review: Raven's Shadow Book 2 - Tower Lord by Anthony Ryan

Tower Lord is the second book in the Raven's Shadow fantasy series by Anthony Ryan. Obviously if you haven't read the first book, this isn't the place to start but I'd recommend reading it and you can see my review of Blood Song right here (http://www.eoghann.com/book-review-ravens-shadow-book-1-blood-song-anthony-ryan).

Where's The Tower?

While this is most definitely a continuation of the story that Ryan started in Blood Song, he makes a bold, and risky, choice by changing narrative format. In the first book it was all the story of Vaelin Al Sorna as related by Vaelin to a scribe. It's not a literary device I particularly care for so I was quite happy to see it go away this time round. However, moving from a single viewpoint character to four is apretty rad... more »

However, moving from a single viewpoint character to four is a pretty radical change to pull on you readers. And judging by the online reaction some of them really didn't like it. I'd argue that Vaelin is still very much the heart of the book and that even when he's not present, people have a tendency to be talking about him or waiting for him, but that may not be enough to appease some people.

ZombieMart

Following on from my post earlier about keeping the title simple and direct.... ZombieMart.

Since it's a two part story I can take advantage of the part titles to indulge my fondness for being clever.

Part one will probably be called Assault On Supermart 13 and I'm favoring Cleanup In Aisle 3 for part two.

The image is a work in progress, but I think it has the basic feel I want.

Clever Vs. Direct

So I'm still thinking on the new title for Walmart Zombies. I got some good suggestions, some of them quite clever.

But there's a catch. Clever generally works after the fact.  Once you've read more you get the joke.  But online the title is generally the only bit most people see. So while I like clever titles, a direct one is probably going to be more effective.

Or to put it another way, I probably need the word zombie in the title.

The Wolves Of West Virginia Part 6 - Running The Wolves
The penultimate part of the story*

The woods around me were a tight tangle that threatened to trip me with every step. I pushed through the brush, shielding my face from the branches. I wasn’t even worrying about staying quite. The bird’s stare haunted me. It scared me.

I didn’t know what I was dealing with, but there was something in this wood that could handle eight werewolves with ease. That alone was terrifying. Sure they weren’t in wolf form yet, but they were strong already. Was it the skin-walker that was doing this? What was the bird? And speaking of werewolves, was it just the trees or was the sky getting dark?

There are few things more annoying to me than grammar nazi's who can't even get their facts right.

Seriously, you're being an ass to begin with and then compound it by being ignorant.

Facebook account vs. Facebook Page?*

So right now I'm just importing my blog posts to my regular Facebook account.  I'm trying to decide if it makes sense to set up a page and have the stuff there instead.

Thoughts anyone?

*Yes I know this is G+ not Facebook. I have my reasons for asking here. No I don't want to hear about how G+ is better.

Here's a saturday scene for you to enjoy with your morning breakfast.

If the story intrigues you, you should probably follow +Mike Reeves-McMillan to find out more.

The Grand Wizard Shimon opened his door and gave me a sharp look between his half-moon glasses and his bushy grey eyebrows. “Who are you, and what do you want?” he said.

“My name's Alix,” I said. “My father is the Duke of Overvale, and he's sent me to consult you about a dragon.”

“Dragon? Highly unlikely,” said Shimon. “What makes you think it's a dragon?”

“Well, let's see,” I said. “It's very large, scaly, dragon-shaped, and it breathes fire. It's terrorizing my father’s duchy. What can you do about it?”

Shimon tugged on his long beard in thought, casting me another reproachful glance. “You’ve seen this alleged beast?” he asked.

“Seen, heard and smelled. Also, felt the fire. It’s not illusionary fire, in case that was your next question. It burned down a barn, and I helped put it out.” I touched my wrist where the burn still stung, despite the apothecary’s best salve.

“Hmm. I’ll need to see this for myself.” Shimon cast about for a moment, then seized his conical, wide-brimmed hat, his rough staff, and his cloak from a stand near the door. “Lead on,” he said, closing the door and making a casual gesture at it. I heard a locking noise from inside, and mystical runes glowed briefly around the doorframe. At least, I assume they were mystical runes. My education is mainly about trade, crops and military strategy, with a little dancing and fencing for flavor.

“You don’t need to bring anything else? No thaumic devices, no arcane tomes?”

“All up here,” he said, tapping his creased forehead. “And in the staff, and in my fingers.”

“All right,” I said. “You know your business, I suppose. It’s why I came to you rather than the three other wizards who live closer to my father’s castle.”

He nodded, as if this was no more than his due, and followed me out to the horses.

Today's scene is from "Alix and the Dragon," currently out on submission.

If you enjoy my writing, please take a look at "Gnome Day" (http://csidemedia.com/gryphonclerks/gnome-day/), a complete short story from the collection Good Neighbours and Other Stories. I'm trying to get it nominated for a local SFF award, and if you like it, you can help out (instructions at the end of the story). I didn't share an excerpt from it because I've already done so, and I try not to double up.

#saturdayscenes  is a weekly event on G+ organised by the Saturday Scenes community. To participate, just post with the hashtag (and ask to join the community). Click the hashtag to see others' work.

RED 55% Off At Amazon - http://amzn.to/14q3Ysh

RED is I think one of the best modern examples of the light hearted action movie. Yes it's preposterous and over the top but that really just adds to the fun of it all. Great cast, solid action.

At $4.50 for the special edition DVD it's a no brainer to add to your collection really. Particularly when you consider that the digital rental version price starts at $2.99 (http://amzn.to/11anA1o)

Work is getting in they way of my hobbies. It's not that I have less time after work. It's that I'm mentally tired because I have been busy this week.

So I'm sitting here and I should be polishing up part 6 of WOlves of West Virginia. But instead I'm playing Star Wars: Galactic Defense because tower defense games where you can masacre Stormtroopers are fun but also require very little brain power.

Dragonlance Re-Read: Dragons Of Autumn Twilight Part 3

Part three of my Dragons of Autumn Twilight Re-read covers chapters 10 through 12.

"Tanis, we must leave. There is nothing more we can do and we must reach Xak Tsaroth. Then we will have our revenge."

The Story So Far

Despite Raistlin's warnings the company enters Darken Wood. At first it all seems fine and pleasant, but after night falls things change. Tanis notices that his elven sight is not working and the company finds itself surrounded by the spirits of the dead. Raistlin is able to communicate with them and they are taken to meet a group of centaurs who in turn take them deeper into the wood to meet the Forestmaster.

What Should Walmart Zombies Be Called

No blog post tonight because I need to spend some more time plotting out the two parts of Wal-mart Zombies. But while I'm doing that I need an answer to the question above because I can't actually use Walmart in the title like that.

Really short plot summary:

Someone or something causes Walmart employees to turn into zombies who then promptly turn their attention (and appetites) on the shoppers. Naturally wizard/shelf stocker Douglas Brodie finds himself in the middle of it.

So... what should it be called?

Book Review: The THirteenth Tower by Sara C. Snider

This is not your usual style of fantasy story. The Thirteenth Tower is not an epic, but rather a much more personal tale and also smaller in scale. The world does not seem to be in the balance here. The story here is all about Emelyn and her place in the world.

You might be forgiven, on reading the opening chapter, for thinking you were reading some sort of Downton Abbey type of novel. Certainly that seems to be the type of world that Emelyn lives in, working as a servant in a house owned by a well to do family. But this low key beginning lulls the reader so that when the weirdness begins happening, it is all the more striking.

You have to wade through a lot of "human interest" guff but this article on Medium does point out the many ways in which the Mars One concept is flawed.

At best it's an example of enthusiasm leading to stupidity. At worst it's a blatant con.
