The Cyrstal Cathedral by jaaapxaap - https://www.flickr.com/photos/98322162@N04/23417199553/

What a wonderfully imaginative micro-build this is. There's a remarkable amount of whimsy in the design of the cathedral and a surprising amount of detail too for such a small scale build.

The latest Captain America: Civil War teaser didn't do much for me (really offered nothing new) but I did enjoy the X-Men Apocalypse trailer.

I'm purely critiquing the trailers here, not the movies, before someone gets their panties in a bunch.

While it started out looking like a semi-faithful adaptation, at this point The Shannara Chronicles has drifted so far from its Elfstones of Shannara Chronicles that it's headed into "inspired by" territory.

They've pulled in characters from later books; they've made stuff up completely and they've also omitted quite a lot.

In and of itself this isn't a horrible thing. I can enjoy a very loose adaptation. Unfortunately though every decision they've made has been to make the story more predictable and cliched.

It's still not a bad show, it's just not actually very good and the wasted potential is hard for me to set aside.

When you read about his behavior 20 years ago suddenly his recent outbursts against Megyn Kelly no longer seem like petulant bullying but instead part of a larger and very disturbing pattern.

Why You No Watching Agent Carter?

Okay so the second Season of Agent Carter is firmly underway now and the ratings are... shit. As in it's achieving series lows and it's vastly under-performing not just compared to Agents of SHIELD but other ABC dramas too.

So why aren't people watching it?

Your world will not end because Doctor Who is off air for a year.

Re-watch episodes, read the books, listen to the audio dramas.

Or watch other things...

This is not a tragedy, you are not re-enacting Romeo and Juliet. Hell it's not even the worst thing to happen to you this week.

Legends of Tomorrow S01E02 - Pilot Part 2 mini review

Well it was definitely better than the first episode, but it has the same basic weakness. Any time the primary plot comes to the fore (or the Hawks get screen time) everything bogs down in tedious exposition. And it's still happening far too often.

But this time we get a lot more of the stuff that works. Big superhero team battles, absurd time travel conundrums and just wonderfully over the top comic-book stories. I can even excuse the abominable lack of strategy in the Hawk's attack on Vandal Savage given that the entire episode proved that this team is not good at working together.

That said I do wonder if the show wouldn't be a lot better with them just bouncing around from timezone to timezone without having to bother about Savage at all.

Legends of Tomorrow S01E01 Mini Review

The first half of Legends of Tomorrow was rough. Way too much speechifying from everyone. I know there's a lot of stuff to set up, but that was just ugly. Even the stronger actors in the groupstruggled with it and the less said about Falk Hentschel's Carter Hall the better.

Fortunately the second half was a lot better. Once the characters were allowed to interact with rather than talk at each other. It helped that the show stopped being quite so serious and started to have a little fun which what is a goofy concept.

There's a good show buried inside this episode, hopefully they'll let it surface next episode.

With my epic (10 seasons plus Ark of Truth) Stargate: SG-1 rewatch completed I'm moving on to something a little less ambitious with Farscape.

It's a show that I liked but didn't love when it aired and I have probably only seen about half the episodes so the rewatch should be intersting if nothing else.

I can see how a Punisher series might fit quite well for Netflix, but you do have to wonder just how many of these shows a single production company can sustain simultaneously without loss in quality.

The Expanse S01E05 - Back to the Butcher - http://wp.me/pedVP-xoA

What? You thought I was going to stop talking about this show?

If the latest episode of The Expanse doesn't have the level of tension that the previous one did, that does at least give the show a chance to do yet more world building and let its characters breathe a little. One of the biggest problems with this show for people who aren't familiar with the books is the amount of characters and locations and story that are being crammed into a mere 10 episode season. At the very least that can make it hard to keep everything straight.

Up to now each episode has been packed with events and characters and stuff. This week though if you just wrote down what happened it would be a pretty short list, and that's probably a good thing. In many ways the biggest event, though it might not seem like it,... more »

In many ways the biggest event, though it might not seem like it, is the renaming of the Tachi as the Rosenante. Not only will that ship become a core element of the show (giving perhaps some needed stability to the scenery) but it gave us a chance to see the crew interact in a situation that wasn't life threatening for once, which in turn gave us some nice character moments and the solidifying of Holden's position as leader of the group.

Review: The Shannara Chronicles S01E01 through S01E04 - http://wp.me/pedVP-xow

What do you get when you cross epic-fantasy heavily inspired by Tolkien with a post apocalyptic future and MTV? Apparently the answer is The Shannara Chronicles a series that is, based on the first four episodes, resolutely... okay. I mean it's just exactly what you would expect... I guess? It's not like it's bad... you know?

By this point my ambivalence should be shining through and there are a few reasons for that. One is of course the fact that someone in their forties isn't in the prime demographic for MTV dramas. Another is that while I acknowledge their flaws I do have a soft spot for the first three Shannara books (and particularly Elfstones which this series is mostly based on). Another is that while I acknowledge their flaws I do have a soft spot for the first three Shannara books (and particularly Elfstones which this series is mostly based on). The biggest problem though is that the show itself seems caught in a love triangle of its own. Pulled inexorably in two different directions. Is it an epic fantasy with the fate of the world in the balance, or is it in fact a story of teen angst, political intrigue and romance?

Wow, that's Pretty

The Shannara Chronicles is undeniably gorgeous to look at as the photos here show. It was filmed on location in New Zealand giving it epic vistas for the cameras to swoop over and the ability to echo some of The Lord of the Rings grandeur.

To their credit though the shows producers have not settled for a simple Rings copy which, given the source material, is actually quite impressive. The Sword of Shannara is "inspired" by The Lord of the Rings in much the way that The Force Awakens is inspired by Star Wars and while The Elfstones of Shannara was considerably more original its origins remain unmistakable. In this case however, the producers have done their best to play up the differences.

I'm wondering if my reaction to The Magicians is less positive than it is to The Expanse because I've read one set of books and not the other.

Because I think my criticisms of The Magicians could probably be levelled at The Expanse too.

The desktop continue to randomly shut down. Though oddly enough mostly in the middle of the night.

On the plus side it's passed the memory and CPU tests I've thrown at it. I just added a temperature logger so we'll see if there's any random spikes in temperature happening.

I say this is good news because so far it's mostly pointing towards a Power Supply issue and those are comparatively cheap. I like to try and run most of these tests before I start paying people. I'm not a hardware person but at least I can point them in the right direction and save a lot of time (and my money).

At the Sign of the Prancing Pony by LePtitSuisse1912 - http://www.deviantart.com/art/The-Prancing-Pony-Poney-Fringant-556686718

Even from the outside the inn looked a pleasant home to familiar eyes. A sign above the door pictured a fat white pony rearing on its hind legs. Over the door was painted the letters: THE PRANCING PONY by BARLIMAN BUTTERBALL. They climbed up the steps. Frodo went forward and nearly bumped into a short, grossly overweight man with a bald head and sweaty red face.

What a wonderfully imaginative micro-build this is. There's a remarkable amount of whimsy in the design of the cathedral and a surprising amount of detail too for such a small scale build.

So I'm now into Season 9 of by Stargate SG-1 rewatch and I need to get back on my X-Files "Best of" re-watch. And then I said I might tackle Farscape after that.

And now I'm thinking I might want to re-watch Sherlock.

This could get difficult. But really, who needs sleep anyway?

Why Aren't You Watching The Expanse Yet?

I'm not going to shut up about this.

Here's an interview with the show runner about episode 4.

I watched Attack the Block the other day. It's a movie that somehow escaped my attention during release. Not sure I have enough to say about it to justify writing a review, but as sci-fi inspired "creature features" go it's pretty good.

Also John Boyega's potential is already apparent in the movie.

Game of Thrones Season Six Confirmed to Air Before Book Release

Not a surprise for anyone who's been paying attention I'm sure, but it is now officially confirmed.

Which leaves me with a decision to make. Because I haven't been watching the tv show. On the other hand I'm not hugely bothered by spoilers so...

Decisions, decisions.

Sherlock - The Abominable Bride - http://wp.me/pedVP-xoq

I'm not sure what exactly the expectations were for this year's Sherlock special The Abominable Bride. All the promotional material made it clear than unlike the regular series it was going to be set in the Victorian era and thus just a stand alone stocking-stuffer. And that's how it proceeded for let's say the first 60 minutes of its running time (I didn't use a stopwatch I may be off by 3 seconds). At which point it got, complicated.

Okay let's step back. Opening with a "previously on" was an interesting technique that actually worked really well because it gave the audience an easy way to compare and contrast modern Sherlock with this Victorian pastiche Sherlock. And just on that level it was quite fun. Of course it turned out to have another purpose as well, but we'll get there.... more »

I have a little light reading to do this year....

Playing at the World is a look into the origins and creation of Dungeons & Dragons and early roleplaying games. http://amzn.to/1MMOvAz
