Danial Hallock10,323No Name NeededIt's getting close to the Holiday Season, and the whole point of this particular part of the season is to "give thanks" to the people (or, in America, things) that have positively impacted your life.  For me, these are those people. You all should remember my initial circle The Three Hundred (http://goo.gl/kqE8h) which was well received at 251 +1s and 48 reshares.  This circle was my first round of hyper-vetting individuals for circling, based on a lot of criteria that was centered around high quality content and a high level of engagement.  I think I combed through about 2,300 profiles on a one-by-one basis before arriving at the final product. That circle then morphed into the The Collaborative Circle (http://goo.gl/Ex9ai) which was less publicized, but still racked in 90 +1s and 13 reshares.  This circle was based on the premise that "If four people from The Three Hundred enjoy person X, then I should also enjoy them."  Well, the combination of these circles lead to an interesting scenario in which I was able to locate all stars through a combination of overlap and relevance (via Google algorithms).  Out popped these twenty five individuals, and I could not be happier with the results.  These are twenty-five individuals in which I am subscribed, their posts are always enjoyable as well as insightful, and the notification stream keeps me engaged throughout the day.Whether you're looking at the tech news from +Mike Elgan, the social and scientific commentary of +Yonatan Zunger, or the general internet awesomeness that is the enigma of +Sarah Rios, you're not going to be disappointed.I normally only notify people that are contained within a circle, but these people are too awesome not to be guilty of a little plus-spam;  feel free to request a removal from the notified (all) circles.(Link to this post: http://goo.gl/AlsXG5) #nonameneeded   #circleshare   #sharingiscaring   #sharedcircle  2013-11-13 23:53:242639671

Movie Review: Big Hero 6 - http://amzn.to/1AymLwO

Disney does superheroes, sort of. That's basically what Big Hero 6 is, but it's worth taking a moment to clarify what it isn't. It is not a Marvel animated movie, nor is it a Pixar movie. Approaching it expecting either of those things will likely end in disappointment.

Generally Big Hero 6 follows a traditional Disney story arc. It executes it well and uses the trappings of superhero stories effectively but you can see its origins in The Lion King and other Disney classics.

TV Review: Constantine - http://www.eoghann.com/tv-review-constantine

Thirteen episodes and that is likely all you get for Constantine. Officially it hasn't been cancelled yet, but the odds are piled up so high against it, you'd be better to assume it was and avoid disappointment. So what went wrong?

John Constantine is a DC Comics character perhaps best known for the long running Hellblazer comic and that's certainly where the tv show took most of its tonal inputs from. Which is slightly odd since Hellblazer was actually cancelled two years ago and replaced by a more mainstream version of the title, tied into the DC superhero universe. And it's that more recent version that informs the setting of the TV version.

Which is slightly odd since Hellblazer was actually cancelled two years ago and replaced by a more mainstream version of the title, tied into the DC superhero universe. And it's that more recent version that informs the setting of the TV version.

You Can't Take The British Out of Constantine

This is where we hit the first problem. It's not just that John Constantine is English, because they kept that detail, nor that the stories were set in England, which they got rid of, it's that the stories were rooted in the culture of Britain at the time they were published.

Hellblazer was unusual in that Constantine aged pretty much in real time over the course of the 20 years the comic was published and the stories were invested with social commentary. All that was lost in the tv adaptation.

Constantine and Hellblazer is British at its core and stripping away the setting and the supporting characters to place him in a generic American background removed a lot of what made it distinctive in the first place.

What Does it Want to Be?

Constantine's lack of unique identity showed in the inconsistency of the episodes. This did get a bit better as the series progressed, but in order to win an audience it needed that uniqueness at the beginning, otherwise it just came across as a Supernatural ripoff.

A lot of the time it really didn't seem to know what it wanted to be. Was it simply a monster of the week horror show? Was it Southern Gothic? Perhaps Catholic inspired horror like the Exorcist?

There was too much monster of the week and too little connective tissue.  Yes I know, they kept talking about the rising darkness but with the exception of a couple of episodes that wasn't an active plot element, more of a poor explanation for the supernatural to behave out of character.

This is all stuff that could have, and likely would have, been addressed over time but they're not going to get a shot at that now. And even if they had, I don't get the feeling they would have been prepared to go to the dark places the comic did.

A Bland Supporting Cast

When it was announced that Lucy Griffiths who had played Liv Aberdine in the pilot episode was being replaced by Angelica Celaya as Zed Martin I was hopeful because there just wasn't that much chemistry between Griffiths and Matt Ryan's Constantine.

Unfortunately the new actor and character really didn't change anything. It didn't help that they couldn't seem to decide what sort of relationship they wanted the two to have. Early on they seemed to be going for flirtatious banter and one-upmanship but then all of a sudden it became some sort of protegé/mentor relationship.

And then there was Charles Halford as Chas. There is a character Chas in Hellblazer, but this is the name only. And having established a mystery to this character in the pilot episode, Constantine promptly answered that mystery in the dullest way possible and then turned him into a sort of human pincushion. Chas appeared in 10 of the thirteen episodes and I still couldn't tell you what his character actually was.

Trying Too Hard

To the producer's credit they did try quite hard to give us a real Constantine, by the end they even had him smoking like a chimney. When was the last time you saw that on tv?

There were lots of references to other supernatural DC Comics characters like Dr. Fate and the Spectre as well. They really wanted comics fans to buy into this adaptation. In the end though that need for acceptance may have done more harm than good.

Matt Ryan's Constantine was perpetually pushed up to eleven, like a caricature of the character he was supposed to be playing. All snarls and cynicism and witty one liners, but with nothing deeper behind it. Perhaps if they had actually gone past having characters tell us how dark and destructive he was and actually shown it, he would have felt more real? Unfortunately they didn't and much like his costume he came across as two dimensional.

Yes the costume was relatively faithful to the comic book sources, but it didn't feel real or lived in. The collar of the jacket was perpetually up and the tie hung loose in a way that made it feel like it was fixed in place (it probably was, wasn't it?). In the end this was a cosplay Constantine, not a real person.

Did You Like It?

Well yeah sort of. I mean in a sort of Agents of SHIELD Season 1 before it gets good way. Constantine isn't actually bad you see and even its most clichéd episode is at least watchable, but it's also not actually good. Of its short run of 13 episodes there are probably only about 3 that even somewhat stand out.

In truth it really didn't earn an extension or a second season.___

Book Recommendation: Eddie and the Kingdom - http://amzn.to/1wMap0h

If you enjoy my ZombieMart and Greed is Good serials  then you should definitely check out +Damian Trasler's Eddie and the Kingdom, a rather more acerbic view of the zombie apocalypse than you usually get.

The protagonist Eddie has a self-deprecating style that is rather similar to Douglas Brodie. When I reviewed it, I gave it 4 out of 5 stars and at only 99 cents for 179 pages which is an absolute bargain.

Without frustration, Liam can now dress himself in only three minutes, and for the first time in 17 years, Ms. Thierry has her mornings back. The relief in her voice was evident as she described the joy of now being able to have a sit-down breakfast and morning banter with all three of her children (she also has typical twin 13-year-olds).

My writing goals for this week are off to a good start. I have the outline for Parts 8, 9 & 10 of Greed is Good written and as it turns out Part 10 is not the end, though I think I am getting close.

The scale of the problem is exposed in Part 10, now I just have to weave together a credible solution. I think I know how it's going to work, but I haven't got the specifics sorted out yet.

Okay then, I've written a very brief outline for Vilde and the Sword of Ice (probably just a working title that one) that hopefully will get the idea out of my brain and let me finish up Greed is Good at which point I can revisit this.

The basic concept is pure Sword & Sorcery with an old school pulp feel. Imagine Indiana Jones crossed with the Gray Mouser in a cosmopolitan fantasy setting. Vilde isn't really interested in saving the world, mainly in enriching herself by way of collecting lost treasures, but she can't quite shake a nagging urge to see justice served.

I've decided there is something worse than editing my fiction. Thinking up names for fantasy characters.

Currently trying to decide what the name of the female protagonist for the unnamed swords and sorcery short story will be.

So I didn't quite achieve all my goals for last week (I have Part 4 half written, not fully written) because... life.

But I need to push forward, so let's set some new goals:

* Finish Part 4 of Greed is Good
* Write Part 5 of Greed is Good
* Outline Parts 8,9 & 10 of Greed is Good
* Edit Part 2 of ZombieMart
* Outline new Swords & Sorcery short story that's clogging up my head right now.

I Need To Write

Okay so my downtime means I just lost the padding I for my weekly posts of Greed is Good. I have next week's installment ready to go but Part 4 is only in outline form.

On top of that pretty much every other step of my plans now revolves around having completed stories to publish. Basically I need to get writing.

So, time to set some short term goals:

This Week:

* Finish Part 4 of Greed is Good
* Outline Parts 5, 6 & 7
* Redraft Part 1 of ZombieMart ___So I didn't quite achieve all my goals for last week (I have Part 4 half written, not fully written) because... life.

When Allison is asked to play Cinderella-turned-Fianceé at a Halloween ball, the last thing she expected was to be accused of murder. She has to find the killer or she'll be put to death for the crimes she didn't commit. To make matters worse, the victims are all werewolves.

On the short list of potential victims, Allison has to act fast, or the killer will have one more body to add to his little black book of corpses.

There's only one problem: One of the deaths has struck too close to home, and Allison's desire for self-preservation may transform into a quest for vengeance...___I actually have Inquisitor but it hasn't reached the top of my reading pile yet.  However, I've liked the other stories I've read by +R.J. "Yes, well, some of us have a work ethic Mr. Brodie."

"And some of us are trying to go to work." I couldn't keep the irritation out of my voice. Living this far away from the Ceannard and the rest of the dinosaurs had left me used to a certain freedom of action.

"Well, I certainly wouldn't want to get in the way of your career as a stock boy." The Ceannard's voice bit off his response with equal testiness and I belatedly remembered that his temper had been legendary. Didn't seem like he'd mellowed with age.

"Security guard." I muttered, knowing as I said it just how defiantly juvenile it must sound.

"Reports of your activities have come to our attention." The Ceannard continued. "Disturbing reports." I braced myself for the inevitable censure. "We have seen similar activity in various locations around the world."

Okay, that I wasn't expecting. I had arrogantly assumed that this activity was all centered on me. Apparently I was not so important after all.

"These activities represent an alarming increase in hostile magical events across all continents."

"What's causing it?"

"We don't know. We're investigating of course, but naturally no one wants to talk. I've always said secrets will bring us all down in the end." I could picture the Ceannard shaking his head as he spoke.

"But, it's coordinated?" I pressed. The Ceannard laughed bitterly.

"You're not a fool boy, despite that unfortunate business. Hostile magical activity on multiple continents, this is entirely deliberate. We are reaching out to all our contacts and asking them to report anything unusual as well as warning them to be careful. You are isolated and vulnerable."

"I appreciate the concern sir, but I seem to have done okay so far."

"You can't blow up a building every time you get  in a bit of trouble boy." The Ceannard snapped. "For god's sake learn some subtlety. There's more to wizardry than explosions."

"Yes sir."  I said as the line went dead. Damn but he was a grumpy old man. He didn't have to reach out to me personally though, particularly not given how I had left Edinburgh. That was more than a mere courtesy call.  Whatever was stirring out in the world, the Parliament was worried about it, and here I sat on my own with no one to cover my back and a bloody great geas dragging mystical attention from miles around. I had a feeling my status as unwanted and unacknowledged black sheep was about to come to an end.

Business was booming at the Blue Ridge Casino, which was just as well for me considering my job at Supermart 13 was on perpetual hold. There isn't a lot of call for people to stock the shelves in a pile of smoldering rubble after all.

The casino wasn't dependent on locals for revenue, though it would happily take, but pulled the suckers in for a hundred miles in all directions. It had been expanding year on year for most of a decade and now looked every bit the gaudy, tawdry, temple to greed that it aspired to be.

Every evening when I walked into the place I was met by a wave of stale air and smoke. The casino was probably one of the few public places left in Charles Town where smoking occurred in open areas. In theory those areas were separated from the rest of the casino, in practice it turns out that smoke travels.

The other thing that greeted me every evening was noise. Ringing, beeping, clanging all accompanied by the background roar of a thousand people talking. It's all rather overwhelming the first five or ten times you experience it. But I'd built up a resistance. I enter an almost zen like state of calm as I walk into the building. The noises and smells just wash over me without penetrating. Most of the time.

I'm not sure how many slot machines exactly the casino had, but I figure it must be enough to seat the entire population of Charles Town. The slots you see are the bread and butter of the casino. Yes, it has horse racing and table games and those attract the higher end clientele, but all those slots just soak up quarters and dollars. In fact these days they happily give you a special card so you don't have to get up to refill, just let your bank account drain directly into the machines.

Lee Anne was exactly the sort of gambler that the casino loved. She was in here every weekend sitting in front of the machine with a cigarette in one hand and the other pressing the buttons. She sat there for hours barely moving her hand just stabbing at the buttons again and again.

I waved to Lee Anne as I walked past and she waved back without letting her concentration slip. I made a mental note to stop back later and see how she was doing, she always had some gossip to share. Right now though I need to get to my spot and relieve Jim.

Jim wasn't where he was supposed to be though. For a moment I was left wondering how to locate him in this sprawling building without alerting management, but then my geas solved the problem for me.

I heard a yell, followed by a thump and then a bellow of rage that could only have come from a man the size of Jim. Following that noise I jogged along a row of slots and made a sharp right. Sure enough, there he was engaged in a bizarre wrestling match with a woman who couldn't have been less than 80 years old.

Book Review: Kill School by Gregory Lynn - http://amzn.to/17zJLBI

This is the fourth book review in my #GreatIndieReviewProject and once again it's a solid read that would hold up against many traditionally published books.

Have you ever read a book and thought, "that was good, but it was so close to being very good"? Because that pretty much sums up my reaction to Kill School. There's nothing fundamentally wrong with the story as it stands but I think it actually has the potential to be much better.

One of its strengths is certainly the goblin Hobbes himself who is just inherently likable (usually of benefit for a viewpoint character) but there are a couple of points where the events seemed a bit unclear to me and I also think it misses a trick on emotional development.

- Do you like fantasy?
- Do you enjoy some humor in your reading?
- Are assassins cool?

Give it a shot.

Did You Like It?

Yes I did like it, my criticisms aren't intended to point out what was bad about Kill School so much as what could have raised it up to a higher level. As it stands, it does exactly what it says on the tin and the result is some pleasant and relaxing reading.

Buy, Borrow or Skip?

It's $2.99 if it sounds remotely interesting to you, buy it. What have you got to lose?

Iain M. Banks highly advanced human (and AI) civilization, The Culture is rather unusual amongst modern science fiction in that it is presented as something close to a post scarcity utopia. Excession deviates from that presentation by showing that maybe the almost godlike (by human standards) Minds aren't quite as morally perfect as they might at first seem. Perhaps they simply haven't been presented with something they wanted badly enough before.

Excession is definitely rather different to the previous Culture novels but that change is quite refreshing.

I'd say this one is for you.

Did You Like It?

Yes, it may actually be my favorite of all the Culture novels I've read to date. While I've seen criticism that some of the in jokes are impenetrable to new readers I think the heavy action quotient will make it a little more familiar to most SF readers and thus easier to warm to.

This Week:

* Finish Part 4 of Greed is Good
* Outline Parts 5, 6 & 7
* Redraft Part 1 of ZombieMart

Previously on Seven Stones: After recovering consciousness in the remains of Haelen’s camp, Anessa convinces him they need to set out after Reverend Kobb. They find the village of Alcston apparently abandoned. Investigating a mouldering hut, Anessa discovers a comatose woman with both legs eaten away.

Anessa felt hands lifting her up and helping her to the door. Staggering out of the hut, she began to hiccup, each spasm burning her throat. Not caring about the mould, she slumped against the swollen planks. Maybe Haelen had been right about needing more rest.

Haelen stepped into view. He held out her pack and then patted her shoulder. “There’s no shame in it. Seeing that and not feeling ill; that would be a bad thing.”

“What... what did that?” She forced the bile down. “How is she...?”

“Korha venom is powerful. Some tales speak of them felling mighty warriors with a single blow. All I could do was stop her from suffering further.”

Anessa took a deep breath, and then regretted it as the scent of stagnant water flooded her nose. She'd thought coming with Kobb would be an escape from Morth, a chance to get away from the east-siders and their sneaking around. Instead, the world was the senseless, dangerous place Dad kept trying to protect her from.

Which made Haelen’s actions all the more impressive. Coming with her might only be repaying a debt to Kobb, but spending his time and precious resources helping a complete stranger...? “We should search the rest of the village. What if there are more villagers?”

Haelen gazed at her for a moment. Whatever he saw made him smile, but it soon faded. “I don’t have the herbs to wake them up. So killing whatever did this might be the only way. I only met the reverend briefly, but I think this would have spurred him on. Which means—”

“—either he got here already and needs help, or we don’t have time to wait for him.” Anessa studied the churned ground. “Those might be hoof prints.”

She unslung her crossbow. After a moment, Haelen drew his eating knife; it didn’t make him look any more dangerous.

The mist thickened as she lead the way through the village, adding to the impression the tendrils clutched at it. As she slogged on, the huts showed ever greater signs of abandonment swollen wood giving way to rot and collapse. Only the squelch of their feet broke the silence.

The ground underwent similar degradation, cloying mud melting into foul-smelling soup. Finally the mist took away what little chance she had of identifying even hints of tracks.

Peering around, she realised she was no longer sure if the dark shapes in the near distance were fallen huts or rotten trees. “How could anyone live here?”

“Cities don’t have the same discomforts, it’s true, but they aren’t necessarily safer. And they have a lot more rules. Some people prefer hard freedom to a feather bed they’ll never own.” Haelen hawked into the mud and then swept his arm around. “But I reckon this foulness came to live here after they did.”

“So, it could be—” In the distance, something cried out. She held a finger to her lips and waited.

A few moments later it came again. “Does that sound like a horse?”

Haelen shrugged. “It's something to head for.”

Eyes constantly drawn in every direction by half-shapes in the fog, Anessa crept forward. The ground resisted each attempt to lift her boot yet slid away each time she put it down.

Filthy water spattered her back and Haelen cried out. Turning, she saw him sprawled face down in the muck. She scanned for threats, but nothing seemed out-of-place. “Haelen?”

He rolled over and sat up, spitting out mud and water. After running his hands over his legs, he picked up his knife. “Caught my foot on something. Left ankle twisted. Doesn’t feel broken.”

She slung her crossbow and helped him up.

His face paled under the filth as his weight shifted onto his legs. Wrapping his arm around her shoulders, he pointed at a twisted form squatting in the murk. “Help me to that tree.”

Anessa wrapped her arm around his waist and started to take his weight. Just as she thought she had it, her right foot slid sideways. Shifting his grip on her shoulder, Haelen managed to stop her falling but almost went over himself. Eventually, stopping almost every other step to change their positions, they reached the tree.

Thin limbs jutted randomly from a bulging trunk. Sap oozed from cracks in bark the colour of lead. Only the few leaves clinging to the least unhealthy twigs convinced Anessa it wasn't some armoured beast.

Haelen tugged on branch about the thickness of his wrist. “Should take my weight.”

“I’m not leaving you in the middle of a swamp.”

“I’m not asking you to.” Haelen drew his knife. “But I can barely walk. I certainly can’t run. I’d only make it worse if we're attacked.”

“Then we—”

“No.” Haelen hacked at the branch. “By the time you get to the village and back it might be too late. You need to carry on. If I can just get the branch off, I can limp back. Maybe take a look in the other huts so I’m not completely useless.”

Anessa’s thoughts refused to settle. Haelen didn’t seem like he would last long at the best of times; with a twisted ankle, he was just prey. But he was right about how long it would take to help him back. The swamp seemed threatening, but all they had actually encountered was mud and fog. Could she really let him go back on his own?

The branch tore away under Haelen’s knife. He wedged a fork under his arm. Tufts of limp black leaves waved above his head. It should have been comical, but it only made Anessa feel more nervous.

Haelen took his arm from around her shoulders. The branch sank deeper, canting him sideways, but he stayed upright. “Anessa. You need to get going. I’ll be fine.”

Unsure what to say, she raised a hand in salute and trudged into the mist. A few moments later she looked back, but the fog had already hidden him from view. Heart heavy, she tried to locate the cries of the horse.

Moving first one way and then angling back as the sound shifted, she advanced. Now she was certain it was a familiar whinny. One of the shadows shifted in a way the mist wouldn’t explain. Hoping she wasn’t giving away the advantage of stealth, she sloshed as fast as she could towards it.

A loud neigh echoed ahead. The fog grudgingly revealed the silhouette of a horse.

Finding firmer footing, Anessa jogged forward. Somehow an island of solid ground existed within the filthy soup. A squat tree jutted from the middle. Falcon, straining against the reins hitched to it’s branches, stood at bay on the far side.

Caked with mud and wreathed in mist, he raced towards her. Spittle exploded across her face as the reins pulled his gaping mouth up inches from her.

Kobb had been here. Gritting her teeth, she stepped closer with her palms raised. “Friend. I’m a friend.”

When he didn’t attack straight away, she sidled over to the reins. Between Falcon’s pulling and the soggy air, the leather had swelled, but she managed to work the hitch loose. As soon as she did, Falcon headed for the mist.

Dogs ran to their masters; maybe horses did too. Unslinging her crossbow as she ran, Anessa struggled after him. The mist shredded around his passage, adding brief maws to Anessa’s imaginings of lashing tentacles. Peering through the murk, she thought she saw a flash of purple but it was gone before she could be sure and did not return.

Falcon surged towards a vague darker shape ahead. And then tumbled sideways as a tentacle seemed to lash out before dissipating again.

Anessa dropped to a crouch. The murk swirled but revealed only more mist. The shadow, the size of an adult man lying on the ground, remained still. She waited.

Falcon didn’t move. Eyes flicking at every shift in the fog, she crept forwards.

The horse was still breathing. But he seemed smaller, lying in the swamp. She patted him on the flank. The same bitter smell as the hut filled her nostrils and thin layer of green mould clung to her palm.

The mist shifted around her, but no attack came. Her legs began to feel weak. Fighting down a yawn, she desperately peered through the murk. The creature should be ahead of her, so why couldn’t she see it.

Her crossbow drooped in her hands. She needed a plan, but the cold seemed to eat away at her thoughts. She slumped next to Falcon. Now he wasn’t looming over her, she realised his coat was soft like a pillow.

She couldn’t hold back a yawn. The mist swirled and thickened ahead, obscuring the slumped shadow. Falcon’s flank felt comfortable under her cheek. Apart from the mould, it was just like...

Doug the werewolf is a snappy dresser. I mean, he doesn't use being a werewolf as an excuse to wander round in torn jeans with a beard down to his ankles. No, Doug wears suits and ties, he looks presentable anywhere.

"What do you do anyway?" I asked him by way of greeting. He stared at me. He has an excellent range of glowers. I considered shutting the door on him, but I remembered what had happened to my last door and decided against it.

Unfortunately unless a wizard has taken the time and expended the energy to build a mystical barrier around your entire house, he's just as vulnerable to home invasion as anyone else. Guess what this wizard hadn't done? It's hard work!

"Look I've got to go to work soon, so can we schedule scowling practice for another time and get to the point." I said, losing patience with his silent act.

"At the Blue Ridge Casino." Doug nodded. It occurred to me to wonder why he knew where I worked, but I didn't ask. He still hadn't told me why he was here. I waited.

The silence got really long and awkward, but I refused to back down. Finally he gave in.

"So... one of the boys, he got a job... at Blue Ridge." Doug said and now it all made sense. Sure they had kicked me out of their territory but now they were intruding on mine.

"I don't recall anyone asking for permission." I said. Doug had the decency to look a little embarrassed.

It's not that the various magical purveyors, creatures and creators have an actual physical territory you understand, well not most of them anyway, but there are rules and agreements and just generally accepted social practices. They've evolved over the centuries to avoid unnecessary mass homicides. What Doug and his pack had done didn't break an treaties, and it certainly wasn't a declaration of war, but it was kind of rude.

"Look, he needs the work okay?" Doug's voice took on that tone of someone who knows they are in the wrong and is angry about it. Generally it's not smart to test a werewolf's temper.

"What's his name?" I asked, letting Doug off off the hook. Besides, I could understand needing a job. That was pretty much the situation I found myself in when Supermart 13 burnt down, and Blue Ridge Casino was one of the few growing employers in the area.

"Rick." Doug said. "He's a good kid. He'll mind his own business."

"Well then we should get along splendidly."  I put on my most annoying smile. Doug brings that out in me.

Doug just stood there glowering at me. I alternated between putting my hand in my pocket and taking it out again. I wasn't quite brave enough to shut the door in his face. With a last glare, he grunted and turned to go.

"Have you seen it again." I cursed my curiosity.

"No. The pack is keeping an eye on things though." Doug knew what I was referring to. "We'll handle it."

I considered pointing out how badly they had handled the creature the first time round, but decided against it. "And... nothing else... weird?"

Doug paused and looked at me again. "I heard what you did to the store." He said. "You're trouble." And with that he walked back down the path towards his truck.

I stood at the door watching until he drove off.  Unless he was a damn good liar the werewolves weren't connected with the zombie attack on Supermart 13. Which was good since I lived next door to them, metaphorically speaking, but also bad because I still didn't know who was behind it.

I didn't have time for further ruminations though, it was time to get ready for work. Casinos do a large chunk of their business at night and so once again I had to get ready for a night shift. It wasn't a glamorous job, there's very little glamorous about casino's, but it was a few steps up from shelf stacking!

I closed the door and looked back at the circle I had laid out on my floor and the medallion lying in the middle. Belatedly I realized that it would have been in clear view for Doug when I had the door open. I wondered if he would realize the significance, and what he might do if he did.

Dispersing the circle with some care, I picked up the medallion and placed it back in the fire safe in my closet, which was about the safest place I had short of putting it in the bank.

After that it took a few minutes work to shave and make myself presentable enough to pass muster at Blue Ridge Casino. I had just finished and congratulating myself on being ready early when my phone rang.

It took me a moment to realize what it was because my phone never rings. I pulled it out of my pocket and looked at the number on the screen in disbelief. I didn't recognize the number, but I knew exactly where the call came from, and because of that, exactly who must be calling. Not answering isn't an option with these sorts of people, they have too many other ways to get in touch with you if they want to.

"Yes." I said, not even trying to disguise my weariness.

There was a short pause and then an accent so refined it could only come from a specific part of Edinburgh spoke.

"The Ceannard will be speaking with you now." She said in tones that brooked no argument.

This is a battle of light against darkness. If darkness wins, we can only hope we die. The alternative is too terrible to imagine.

Been doing some more tweaking on my website to emphasise the fiction more. Making a change to my mailing list too. I'm moving it to weekly. With my frequency of posting that will make for a more reasonable amount of content I think.

Amazon Picks Up The Man In The High Castle

Very good news indeed. I reviewed Amazon's pilot episode ( http://www.eoghann.com/tv-review-man-high-castle )  for their adaptation of Philip K. Dick's The Man in The High Castle
and while it does take some liberties with the source material it seems tonally faithful.

It's yet another example of top quality drama being produced directly for streaming services.

Rock, Paper, Scissors, Lizard, Spock - The Dice Game - http://amzn.to/1GbTyd1

So everyone knows Rock, Paper, Scissors, Lizard Spock, right?

It's simple to play:

Scissors cut paper
Paper covers rock
Rock crushes lizard
Lizard poisons Spock
Spock smashes scissors
Scissors decapitate lizard
Lizard eats paper
Paper disproves Spock
Spock vaporizes rock
And as it's always been, Rock crushes scissors

But now there's a dice game version of it. My wife just got it for me because I'm a total geek and she knows it.

Fools Rush In

The Troll doesn't deserve this treatment! Stung into action you leap down from the tree, fortunately landing two of the men and knocking them over. Unfortunately in the process you also end up knocking the wind out of your lungs.

You roll over onto your back, gasping for air, only to find yourself staring at the point of a sword and an angry young man.

"How dare you assault my retainers." He snarls in a voice that might have been imperious if it was less squeaky. Now that you've got a closeup look at him you realize he can't be much more than fifteen.

You're about to explain exactly why you attacked when the troll takes matters into his own hands, thumping the boy on the head and knocking him out cold. His retainers, scared by the sudden reversal of fortune, run away into the woods.

Numenera Corebook 33% Off  - http://amzn.to/1COGzdP

If you're a fan of tabletop RPGs then Numenera is a game that probably interests you and Amazon has the hardback edition of the corebook (Rules and Setting) for $40.34, well below the $60 RRP.

Considering even a PDF download costs $20 that strikes me as a pretty good price for a 416 page illustrated hardback.

Designed by Monte Cook who (amongst other things) worked on the 3rd Edition of Dungeons and Dragons, Numenera is an interesting merging of more "traditional" RPGs like D&D and modern rules light/storytelling games styles.

It also features a distinctive setting, millions of years in our future with a medieval society that has access to magical technology as a result of previous now lapsed civilizations.

The Fake Name Generator

One of the things I struggle with most when writing is coming up with new names that fit the character's background. Which is why the Fake Name Generator is awesome.

You can specify the age range of the person, there nationality and what country they are living in and it will spit out a potential name (whole identity actually).

Not all of the names are going to work, but  it gives you a starting point at least.

Part 1: Mostly Very Dull

Being a wizard is mostly very dull, at least when I'm not being chased by werewolves or attacked by zombies, and consists of lots of reading accompanied by cautious use of magic. Why so cautious? The more you learn about magic, the more you learn what can go wrong which, it turns out,  is almost everything.

Look, even casting the simplest of spells you're messing with the bindings of the universe,  to say it is potentially disastrous would be understatement. Fortunately that sort of business is normally self-limiting because it takes a lot of time to learn how to channel the power to cause real damage. By the time you do you're so terrified you don't want to do anything.

Which is why Saturday night saw me in my living room once again scouring the internet. Because, while I can just about get by in a couple or three languages, my knowledge of Elamite is non-existent. Strangely Google doesn't auto translate languages that have been dead for over two thousand years, I guess there has to be some sort of cut off point.

Magic has a very, very long history. In fact, it is inherent in the fabric of the universe and has existed longer than humans themselves. So it's not surprising that there are some very old magical items floating around. What no one has ever been able to explain to my satisfaction though is why older artifacts seem to accumulate magical energy.

But they do, which makes them very dangerous. Like, for example, the medallion I was studying at that moment. I'm no metallurgist so I don't know if the medallion was two thousand and some years old as the use of the Elamite language for the inscriptions implied, but it was definitely old. And I'd see how powerful it was. The biggest question on my mind though was what it was doing in Charles Town, West Virginia.

Figuring out what it said was the first step to unraveling that particular mystery. Honestly, at this point I was being stubborn. I should contact  Mercedes and have an expert do the research.  It would be quicker, easier, and be an admission that I couldn't do this myself.

I needed to stop messing around though because something was going on. I had moved here for a quiet life, but the last few months had been far from that. Werewolves, zombies, what was next vampires? Okay now I'm just being silly.

It would be arrogant, or is that egotistical, to assume that all this was happening because of me, but it's also true that, courtesy of a certain geas, I am something of a magic magnet. And if I didn't figure out what was going on, I was liable to end up dead.

I studied the ornate silver medallion for a moment as though merely peering at it would somehow unlock all its secrets. It was a big, chunky thing, not something you could wear discreetly, but the Elamite cuneiform had been delicately inscribed around its circumference.

A little magical examination might be able to find out more. Or it might just blow up my house. Remember what I said about how wizards use magic cautiously? I had already seen what this thing was capable of in the hands of an untrained person, imagine the damage a trained but stupid wizard might do.

And because I am just that damned stupid, I figured I'd give it a shot. Now, I'm not completely crazy so I took a few precautions first, starting with a circle. Well, more of an ellipse really because I don't have a steady hand for drawing. But the truth is that the exact shape isn't the point of a circle, it's the lines themselves that matter they conduct or contain power. Circles just look better.

Anyway, circle drawn, shields prepared, I examined the medallion again. This time I reached out with my mind and looked at the lines of energy radiating from it. It was like staring into the sun. The amount of power contained in this thing pretty much convinced me it was as old as it appeared.

There were... layers... of magic wrapped around this thing. Different spells, different energy sources, all somehow intermingling.  Years of magic use and spell-crafting had left their mark on this item. Part of me really wanted to just spend the next decade unraveling the medallion's history and all the events it had been involved in.

But I needed to focus. I was looking for evidence of recent owners not historical ones, and by owners I didn't mean teenage suckers conned into using the medallion. No, the last owner of this medallion had been a skilled wizard, and with some care I ought to be able to detect the signature of their magic at work here.

Assuming I didn't blow myself up first, because the magical power in the medallion had an unstable feel. But to find out what, I needed to burrow deeper into the layers, which was asking for trouble.

I was just about to do it when the doorbell rang,  which may have saved my life. Or not because when I opened the door I found myself face to chest with Doug the werewolf.

Yes, I know our names are similar, but I don't like being called Doug. My name is Douglas. Also I'm not a werewolf. Also Doug doesn't like me very much. Which made his presence outside my house not only surprising but more than a little alarming. Because the last time I'd seen him, he'd run me out of Shepherdstown.

I read the first book in the series Storm Without End ( http://amzn.to/1DOFRkR ) and rather enjoyed it so I'm pleased to here that Storm Surge is now available for pre-order.

Hey, readers! Fans of Storm Without End! Lovers of books! Yeah, I am talking to you, that cool person with great tastes (because anyone who likes novels has great tastes in my opinion.)

Storm Surge is available for preorder. Please check it out. If the story interests you, please consider buying a copy. It'll really help me out, and it might help others notice that it's in the coming soon section.

If you are new to Requiem for the Rift King, don't fret--book one is available and... It will also be on free promotion the day before Storm Surge's release, so if you need to catch up on the series, you'll have a chance to.

If you like fantasy, but aren't sure you want to buy, add it to your wishlist. Amazon might help spread the word if it gets enough attention.

And should all of that fail... Authors need love too. I'll take hugs. (I could use them today.)
