What is your irrational fear?
My international friends will think I am a wimp, but this spider is huge by Welsh standards and it took ages to get the courage to open my door tonight.
It isn't even poisonous so poses no threat to me at all.

In school we learned of Marie Curie, but there were so many more...

" Female scientists have contributed to some of science’s biggest breakthroughs, from unraveling the structure of DNA, to discovering fission, to mapping the ocean floor.

So why don’t we know their names?
This week on Science Friday, we’re celebrating science’s unsung heroines. We’ll hear about Maria Sibylla Merian, the 17th century “mother of entomology,” whose watercolors documented insect metamorphosis. We’ll also learn about Marie Tharp, whose maps of the ocean floor paved the way for continental drift theory. Plus, meet the women programmers of the ENIAC, the first all-electronic, multipurpose computer."___In school we learned of Marie Curie, but there were so many more...

Easiest way to sort/purge circles?
I have been on G+ since the start (Well week two!), so in four years a lot of people have come and gone.
I have been unable to add anyone for about 6 months and sorting through everyone is tiresome, especially as my browser crashes when I try to at least try to remove the nameless blue heads that have deleted their profiles.

Other than circlescope what do you recommend?

I would probably be looking to remove anyone who hasn't posted for over 12 months.
(I know some who never post publicly so I will have to remember to keep them in!)

Sorry, tech press. Google+ is alive and well.

(Read my column: http://goo.gl/Z6sQ6w )

A chorus of tech journalists this week is saying that Google is phasing out its social network, Google+.

Where did they get this juicy nugget of information? Well, they made it up. And I'll tell you why.

But first, let's look at what the press is saying and compare that with reality:

What do you call this?
I have a love/hate relationship with these things.
Love when they go right, hate when they they don't.

Coffee, Alcohol (Whiskey in this case), sugar, topped with cream.

(Cream started sinking while i got my phone on this one ;/)

Should schools dictate hairstyles? Does/did yours?
I think I just lost a discussion with my soon to be 8 year old about his hair.
He wants a mohican, I have said no, and the hairdresser also told him he has to wait until he is 16. When I explained schools have these rules as when he is an adult he will have to be smart and tidy, his response was "EXACTLY! childhood is for enjoying who you are!"
Can't really argue with that!

When I was a child, any child with "extreme" haircut, was put in solitary confinement until their hair conformed to the norm.

Image is a stock image, there is an article at huff about examples.

I admittedly take my surroundings for granted occasionally. Hard to imagine so many people have never seen the sea, a mountain or even the night sky!

This great list reminded us about how lucky we are to be in Dolgellau, and what we may sometimes take for granted, can be breathtaking to visitors.
(Including two guests who had never been outside of London before so had never seen the night sky in all its glory!)
So here it is:
44 Reasons Wales should be on your Bucket List
(And why Wales spoils you for life!)

Old photos make me sad.
My grandfather Richard Parker. Turned 16 in 1939 and off he went to war.
Luckily he came home safely, and though sadly he died when I was 15, I have very fond memories of him in my childhood.
Makes me sad to think that once my generation is gone, the photo will have little meaning to people.
I've got photos here of family, of early 1900's that no living relatives seem to recognise. :(
In the next generation I guess it will be all digital?

Does your child REALLY understand stranger danger?
Scary to think about but every parent needs to watch this, and remind their children that "baddies" can appear friendly and "helpful" or in need.

I live in a rural area where everyone knew eachother, but as a kid 30 years ago we were taught to scream, bite, kick if anyone tried to grab us.
But even back then it was the same tactics used by abductors, the favourite still seems to be "come pet my puppy" or "I'm sad, come help me find my puppy" kids seem to forget what they've been taught since they were toddlers.

Anyway, I'm rambling now, just watch. Please.

I admit I had no idea how much effort goes into a cup of coffee!

Got your cup of morning Joe?

Good. Now sit down and watch this, because I think it'll make you appreciate just how much work goes into making a cup of coffee.

I'm considering giving home-grown coffee a go when we've moved to the states. Yes, I know that the altitude and weather isn't ideal. But just for fun. Because, I'm the kind of person who likes to know what goes into making or building something. ___I admit I had no idea how much effort goes into a cup of coffee!

I've lost count how many times I've heard British "ex-pats" on visits home complain about how many "immigrants" there are in "their" country.
The mind boggles.
Is it the same where you are or is it a British thing?

In your opinion is Google Plus suitable for giveaways and can you suggest suitable prizes?
Or are they seen as "spamming"
There seems to be minimal local presence on here. So is it a waste of time?
Out of my 30,000 followers, only 20 or so are "local".
Suggestions on the original post if possible please.

What would you like to see as a prize in our G+ giveaways?

Gallon of Beer?
Trooper T Shirts and other merchandise?
Meal for two?
A free nights stay?

We currently have a meal for two prize draw running for our Facebook http://www.Facebook.com/royalshiphotel
And twitter @Royalshipll40
But we are aware most of our G+ fans are further afield so postable prizes and nights stay are most likely!

Suggestions most welcome!___In your opinion is Google Plus suitable for giveaways and can you suggest suitable prizes?

+Taffanaut has just posted an interesting tweet.

If true, it could mean that Llanbedr airfield is still in the running to be the home of the UK's first Spaceport. Which considering the short list was approx 10 locations last year is certainly a good thing.

If  you have no idea what I mean by the UK's first Spaceport then, here's +BBC News 's Pallab Ghosh with a news report from when the shortlist was announced last year - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IOhNNucIMxU

This house has to be on my doorstep somewhere but I've no idea where!
So eerie, sad actually, that there is noone to treasure these memories and belongings anymore.

The Cloud House - An Abandoned Welsh Farmhouse
"With its dusty old furniture, littered with the remnants of a bygone age, this farmhouse looks like a museum exhibit.
Except the jacket casually slung across the back of a bedstead is not an artfully prepared replica of a lost life but the real deal.
The stone-built farmhouse was abandoned decades ago in a remote location in Mid Wales, with only its contents bearing witness to the lives of its former owners."
Great photographs from Dan Circa.

Another beautiful day in Snowdonia!
It is cold but dry and sunny, and this weather is promised all week.
This photo was taken earlier this morning near the Mawddach Trail which goes from Dolgellau, following the path of the old railway line along the estuary to the coast at Barmouth.

Many of our guests choose to catch the bus to Barmouth and walk back to the hotel knowing they can reward themselves with a hearty meal and a pint when they get back.

The trail is 10 miles long and is away from the road so ideal for families, walking and cycling, but you can join or leave it at several sections along the way and catch a bus back if you prefer.

Do you have any tips for those new to the trail?

This popular trail has featured on several television programmes, including Railway Walks with Julia Bradbury.

Family’s desperate search for donor after father can only save one of his dying Twins

(by Oliver Wheaton for http://Metro.co.uk)

A father has been forced to face the agonising realisation that he will only be able to save one of his twin girls.

Michael Wagner’s two three-year-old daughters Binh and Phuoc both suffer from Alagille syndrome, which affects the function of their livers, meaning they both require a liver transplant.

"So far the only match for the two girls, who were adopted from Vietnam when they were 18-months-old by Michael and his wife Johanne, is Michael himself. Because of this the father will only be able to donate a liver to one of the girls."

This fantastic castle is just down the road from me :)

A new bridge is being installed at Harlech castle to allow people to reach the original entrance for the first time in 600 years!

The main section of the bridge at Harlech Castle will be lowered into place as part of the £6m project.

It will also see the former Harlech Castle hotel and car park transformed into a visitor centre.

The Cadw scheme, funded by the Heritage Tourism Project, is due to be finished by March.

The project is said to be complicated given the narrow, twisting streets of Harlech, and the tight entrance to the car park where the bridge is being unloaded in sections from a crane.

Wiki: Harlech castle is a medieval fortification, constructed atop a spur of rock close to the Irish Sea. It was built by Edward I during his invasion of Wales between 1282 and 1289 at the substantial cost of £8,190. Over the next few centuries, the castle played an important part in several wars, withstanding the siege ofMadog ap Llywelyn between 1294–95, but falling to Owain Glyndŵr in 1404. It then became Glyndŵr's residence and military headquarters for the remainder of the uprising until being recaptured by English forces in 1409. During the 15th century Wars of the Roses, Harlech was held by theLancastrians for seven years, before Yorkisttroops forced its surrender in 1468, a siege memorialised in the song Men of Harlech. Following the outbreak of the English Civil War in 1642, the castle was held by forces loyal to Charles I, holding out until 1647 when it became the last fortification to surrender to the Parliamentary armies. In the 21st century the ruined castle is managed by Cadw, the Welsh Government's historic environment service, as a tourist attraction.

The bridge will be partially assembled before being lifted into place, giving access to the castle through its historic outer wall gate for the first time in 600 years

For more information and opening times see
