The Lonely Tree

While Rachael and I were away in Loch Lomond I just had to go and visit the lonely tree on the east side of the loch. In my head I wanted a glorious sunset to happen behind it with the magnificent mountains towering in the background. Well, as you can see that didn't happen! But what did happen was ten times better!

As we were driving to the location it started to heavily snow, the clouds came in low and visibility was beginning to thin. The tree wasn't just lonely anymore but sitting in a barren land where the loch never seemed to end. I really like the final image as I've hardly edited it. What you are seeing is pretty much straight out of the camera, a colourless world where time has stopped and only the tree remains.
This image is available as a print, so if you're interested just let me know. :)

Element

We all have our elements, places in which we thrive and feel at home with our craft. For me, it's the Scottish Highlands. A place filled with majestic beauty and stunning landscapes, a place I can go to time and time again and never get bored of it. This is me in my element...

Where's your element?

Todays glorious sunshine makes me miss the cold as if you know me, you know that I'm not too keen on heatwaves as I prefer to be freezing cold rather than roasting hot! This shot was taken on the banks of loch Lomond in January when the clouds were coming in low over the hills. I really like the negative space in the image and emptiness that it creates.

Checked out my new website yet?: www.kirknorbury.co.uk

Here's a behind-the-scenes shot from a recent workshop I did down at Turnberry Lighthouse, we were greeted with a beautiful sunset to finish a great day. I'm still taking bookings for 2015/2016 so please have a look on my website for more details.

New Vlog Video - 2013 Trip To Iceland

I'm going to start creating more vlogs on my YouTube channel, show what happens behind the scenes and my daily life as a photographer. In my second episode I take you back to 2013 when I visited Iceland. The footage was sitting on my hard drive gathering dust and I've always wanted to put it on there on youtube, so here it is!

No matter where I am, there's a good chance I'll get the 10-Stop filter out at some point during the shoot. This was taken down at Turnberry while I was running a workshop the other week.

Turnberry Lighthouse

Over the weekend I had the pleasure of running a 2-day workshop for two lovely ladies from California. This shot was taken on Saturday evening just as the sun was setting, there may have been a cold wind but the sunset definitely made up for it!

Bluebells

I love photographing Bluebells but they can be a little difficult to find at times in Scotland. Most of the time I just stumble upon them when I'm not looking for them which is always a nice surprise. These were photographed on Friday while I was running a photography workshop along the Ayrshire coast and we found a small patch of them near one of the cliff edges.

Sometimes I really enjoy sticking an ND filter on the front of my lens, shoot long exposures and see what images I can create while waving my camera around like a madman! This was taken at Loch Lomond in January while there was snow everywhere.

I really need to get myself up to the Highlands again sometime soon, I had such an amazing trip last time that I want to explore the area even more. This shot was taken at Luss on the banks of Loch Lomond, I used a 10 stop filter to smoothen out the water which made the boat a little blurry but I actually like it this way.

My new website is now live so make sure to check it out!

I don't tend to edit my night sky images into black & white but when I converted this image it just looked so much better. Due to the full moon high in the sky the stars weren't as bright as they usually are so this shot looks like it could have been taken in the middle of the day, something I love about shooting during a full moon.

I love walking around Turnberry lighthouse at night, it's a great location for photographing the night sky due to the low amount of light pollution in the area but there's enough light to aluminate the lighthouse.

Ardrossan beach is one my newest favourite locations along the Ayrshire coast, Arran is a lot closer and there are some great shots to be had in this area. I have to always check the tide times for this area as the landscape dramatically changes from low to high tide. This shot was taken as the tide was going out which for me is my favourite time to be there.

I've been playing around with different focal lengths recently, this shot was taken at 85mm as I needed a focal length that could get the shipwreck remains to look bigger in the frame as I couldn't get any closer. A wide-angle lens would just make it look too small in the frame.
I need to go back there during low tide to see if I can get a different perspective of the remains.

Turnberry Lighthouse

Straight off the press! This is a brand new image I took last night of the Milky Way down at Turnberry Lighthouse on the Ayrshire coast. I've been planning this shot for the last couple of weeks, keeping an eye on the weather, location of the Milky Way in reference to where I'll be and the moon phase. I don't have a lens that would document the scene the way that I wanted so creating a panorama seemed to be the best way to go about it.

Stitching together 6 vertical images allowed me to control the composition and include as much of the Milky Way as I could, the resulting image weighs in at 169 Megapixels and the TIFF file is just over 3GB's!

Prints of this shot are now available so if you're interested please send me a message or an email through my website.

This was taken at Loch Ba by Rannoch Moor, the sun was setting behind the mountains and I could just see this rock sticking out of the ground in the distance. It made for a great foreground object because before this all I had was snow in the foreground and I wanted something with a bit of interest.

Svartifoss was an amazing waterfall to see in Iceland with its basalt columns surrounding the falls. The light wasn't great that day as the sun was in the wrong position for this location creating some very harsh shadows that made getting a decent exposure quite difficult.

But photographing the basalt columns on there own made for some really nice shots due to their patterns and the contrasting light worked to my advantage.

Iceland’s Best Photographic Locations

My latest article for Wex Photographic is now ready to read. In this article I go through my personal favourite locations from Iceland that I think everyone should visit at some point in their lives. I still feel I've only just scratched the surface of what Iceland can offer and cannot wait to return in the next year or so. :)

This is the mighty Seljalandsfoss waterfall located just off the edge of the "Golden Circle" road. To read the full article please click the link below.

Great days shooting along the #Ayrshire coast, the weather wasn't on my side but between the rain there was some really nice light. #landscape #photography #Scotland #nature #westkilbride #portencross #sonya7r #coast #seascape

While I was away in the Highlands during January we stopped off at Loch Ba on Rannoch Moor to photograph the distant mountains and frozen water. It was a great walk in the snow to try and get as many shots as I could while the light was fading but this shot was most definitely my favourite as shards of light broke through the clouds and lit up parts of the mountains. I also love the snow that's been blown off the ridge of the mountain on the left hand-side, it looked quite windy up there.

164 Million Pixels!

I mentioned yesterday on my Facebook page about rendering a panorama that had a whopping resolution of 164 Megapixels! Well here is that image, I'm really happy with how it came out though I do wish the image had a bit more space on the top and bottom of the frame to let waterfall breath a little more.

Moonlit Turnberry Lighthouse

During the full moon last week I went to photograph the night sky down at Turnberry lighthouse on the Ayrshire coast. The full moon lit up the landscape so brightly that I hardly had to use my head torch to see where I was going. I spent a good 4 hours walking along the coastline trying to get as many angles as I could and getting the shots I wanted.

Behind The Image: Buachaille Etive Mor, Glen Etive

New YouTube Video

In this new series I take you behind the scenes on how I take my photographs while out on location around the UK and abroad. In my first episode I'm at the beautiful Glen Etive valley in the Highlands of Scotland photographing the majestic mountains covered in a lovely blanket of snow.

I'm also celebrating passing 1000 subscribers on YouTube! Thanks everyone for watching my videos, a lot more to come! smile emoticon

Buachaille Etive Mor

I've spent most of today importing and organising the 1500 images I took on our trip to Loch Lomond and the Highlands. I must say it was the best holiday I've had in a long time! Thanks to Rachael :) It's going to take a while to get through all the images but to get the ball rolling here's one of the mighty Buachaille Etive Mor at the head of the Glen Etive valley.

Prints are available, please send me a message if you're interested. :)
