Now that the Androids are up, Christmas Tree is Done

Next year, I think we're just going to use a Nexus 9 with a picture of a tree. But until I convince my wife, we still have to get the decorations out of the garage and string it all up. I've heard it's tradition.

I'm in Seattle today and just wrapped up a presentation at Search Marketing Expo Advanced on bringing +Google Analytics and AdWords together. (http://g.co/GoogleBP) With the clouds clearing outside the conference center, it makes for a very nice view. The fun colors inside the meeting room weren't so bad either.

Another season of Little League coaching ... in the books

My kids love baseball (and so do I). In fact, I've pretty much raised them on it. Now that my four year old and six year old are both in Little League, they are constantly playing in the backyard and making each other better. Their constant practice has made them great players and leaders on their teams - even at a young age. It's been a lot of fun to watch, and be part of, as their dad and as an assistant coach to both teams.

Already looking forward to them both playing at the next level starting next season as they move up. /cc +Kristine Gray

+Selena Larson was among the many of us (myself included) happy to see some of Google's women engineers representing the company on stage today. Working at Google, I interact daily with elite female colleagues, and seeing them on stage is commonplace. But it's a rarity in tech, and this should change. Good signs are good signs, but there's a lot more to do. Thanks for writing this up, Selena.

The Verge Takes On Online Photo Storage Services
/via +Casey Newton for +The Verge

Regarding Google+, he says: "Google’s take on photos is still easy to recommend. It offers you unlimited free uploads at a size of 2048 pixels, and it applies some really fun effects to your photos: turning bursts of pictures into looping GIFs, and automatically creating slick vacation photo albums whenever you spend a few days away from home. By default Google shows you highlights of your photos rather than your entire timeline, giving you a pleasing high-level view of your collection. And its web-based editing tools are superb."

Check out the article. Good stuff.

Getting Electricity from the Sun, not from the Grid

Elon Musk's announcement of Tesla Energy yesterday is fantastic and good news, offering more ways to get off the electricity grid through the power of solar. Here in California, where we've got plenty of sun (and no rain), my +Sunrun solar panels have been exceptionally busy. In April, we had 29 days out of 30 where we gave significant energy back to the grid. On April 30, we used less than one kilowatt hour.

Going solar was our best move of 2014. If you haven't seen the Tesla announcement, watch it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yKORsrlN-2k

My kids' first Chromebooks arrived today
#chromeos #chromebooks #chromies

On Monday, a colleague alerted me to Walmart's featuring refurbished Acer Chromebook 11 laptops for only $129 each. I've been openly thinking about getting them Chromebooks for a while, as their reading and writing improves, and this deal was too good to pass up. Shockingly, they arrived today - two days early. Amazing. Getting them set up, as you can expect, is a breeze.

The Web is what you make of it.

Found This Sphinx Moth In Our Front Yard Today

I was all set to take my 4 year old to Little League this morning when I spotted this big and beautiful moth in the front yard. It was too picturesque to ignore. After giving it the photographic treatment, I released the moth in our back yard on our tree, so it can continue on its mission. (Hat tip to +Terrie Gray for identifying)

A Smiling Crab from Santa Cruz

My kids have been on Spring Break all week. Today, I joined them and ditched the office to head to the beach. While there, we met one of the natives, who carried big pinchers, but was quite friendly, as you can see. It was fun to see the crab scuttle sideways, but he didn't get far. Eventually, we released him and he's no doubt sleeping off the experience.

Ladybugs of Las Palmas

A while ago I shared this photo with +Terrie Gray, my mom, a well known photographer and nature nut. But today, I looked again at this casual photo and realized it's not half bad for a little smart phone. And by little smart phone, I mean the big Nexus 6. You can zoom in and even see the reflection off the ladybugs' backs, and catch the drops of dew. So watch where you walk in the park and don't squish these ladybirds.

FriendFeed's Closure Another Painful Loss from a Vibrant Era of Social Media
/via +louisgray.com

"If you were part of the active community that made FriendFeed special in those wide-eyed years, you experienced something I've never seen with any community since (with occasional flashes on Google+ and Twitter being exceptions). If you missed it, then you missed out on seeing one of the most talented teams ever assembled working on something that was both fun and smart. And that story's final chapter is coming without us ever getting the happy ending we were hoping for. I'm not mad, just wistful at what might have been.

Long live FriendFeed."

If you missed it, then you missed out on seeing one of the most talented teams ever assembled working on something that was both fun and smart. And that story's final chapter is coming without us ever getting the happy ending we were hoping for. I'm not mad, just wistful at what might have been.

Long live FriendFeed."___

The Friendliest Turf War Imaginable: Ingress

There's no other 'game' like it. Get off your butt, go see the world around you, and meet new people. Ingress is a fun way to learn more about your city and accelerates your competitive spirit. Like +John Hanke, I'm on team Enlightened and am happy to make our world a little greener. (More: http://ingress.com)

Here at Google, some of our colleagues with above average career experience (and maybe some gray hairs) call themselves Greyglers. Let the begging and jealousy commence. And no, I don't have a stack laying around for you, nor a secret link for you to get yours. Not even you +Barry Schwartz.

The Bay Bridge from Google SF: With and Without Fog

On Monday, I was up at Google's San Francisco office, which has a magnificent view of the Bay, and particularly, the Bay Bridge, connecting Oakland to San Francisco. I took these two photos a few hours apart, one enshrouded in fog, and one after it had burned away, from about the same angle, with the same Nexus 5. Fairly remarkable what a little sun can do.

10 New Year's Resolutions (for you) for the Year 2015

In years past I've put forth fun predictions for the world in tech. And trust me, I have some predictions, but I'll hold those close to the vest. Working at Google makes predicting the future like cheating. And I won't bore you with a list of my own resolutions for 2015. Instead, I'll suggest (with bias) ten resolutions each of you (and often us too) should take this year to make our online and offline lives even better.

On Monday, as I told you, +Stephen Mack and I walked a full 100,000 steps in an all day effort, to raise money for charity. We were very lucky to get support of friends to walk with us, and donations from more than fifty people, who gave +Camp Taylor Inc almost $5,000. Thank you so much for those of you who participated directly or virtually. And while we were sore the last few days, it was more than worth it.

Today, I walked more than 100,000 +Fitbit Steps for Charity
#fitbit100k   #teamriley

To help raise money in support for +Camp Taylor Inc, +Stephen Mack and I, along with others for various parts of our trek, walked more than 100,000 steps in a single day. It took more than 16 hours of a march with more than 6,000 steps an hour. We walked more than 46 miles. We ended the day very sore, but very pleased with the success. We met our goal, and raised almost $4,000 for Camp Taylor, a summer camp for children with heart disease, in support of my friend and colleague, Ken Norton, whose son passed away at age 11 just a few months back.

You can help donate here: https://www.firstgiving.com/fundraiser/louisgray/fitbit100k

In the mean time, enjoy the AutoAwesome animation of my Fitbit stats as the day progressed.

This Monday, +Stephen Mack and I are going to be walking all day, with an audacious goal of reaching 100,000 steps in a single 24 hour period. That's about 50 miles. And while we're crazy enough to do this just for the sake of achievement, I've started a fundraising page to support Camp Taylor, a free summer camp for children with heart disease, in memory of Ken Norton's son, Riley. Follow our journey starting early Monday (I'll have a post for it) and help Camp Taylor by donating here: https://www.firstgiving.com/fundraiser/louisgray/fitbit100k

Permanente Creek crosses Google's Mountain View campus, and lately, it hasn't been much more than a trickle, as a result of our ongoing drought. But not today. Thanks to the big storm hitting us with lots of moisture and wind (off and on), it's full, and at a height I've not ever seen.

/via +louisgray.com  #ingress

+Ingress is the most well-designed, intelligently deployed concept I've ever seen for an immersive experience on mobile, which encourages you to get off your butt, explore the world around you, and find new people to help you achieve goals together. Every facet of the application, even while it seems mysterious, is designed to help you get out of house, to explore new crannies of your neighborhood (and beyond) and discover people on your faction who need your help to achieve what would be impossible alone. I've never seen anything like it.

You Can't Achieve Equality by Expecting Everyone to be the Same
/via +louisgray.com

Earlier this month, +Erica Joy wrote a pair of posts around the other side of diversity - and her experiences working in technology as a black woman. What struck me most from her posts and our discussions was that she felt she needed to change who she was to fit in with the culture around her. And this is not okay. The culture needs to be adaptable to accept everyone. We get better as we learn from each other and expand our own abilities together.

And +Erica Joy , you may not love the photos... but I do. You're the best.

The charm of Fitbit has always been more than just counting steps and seeing how far you've meandered in your day. Even more than the virtual badges you can collect for hitting new personal records, one of the most engaging pieces of this smart wearable has been informally competing with your friends for a place atop the leaderboard, learning who is the most active, and seeing just how much further you need to go to land a spot at the top.
