3 years ago we embarked on a project to put computing inside a contact lens -- an immensely challenging technical problem with an important application to health.  While I am delighted at the progress that project has made, I could not have imagined the potential of the initiative it has grown into -- a life sciences team with the mission to develop new technologies to make healthcare more proactive.  The efforts it has spawned include  a nanodiagnostics platform, a cardiac and activity monitor, and the Baseline Study.

It’s a huge undertaking, and I am delighted to announce that the life sciences team is now ready to graduate from our X lab and become a standalone Alphabet company, with Andy Conrad as CEO.  While the reporting structure will be different, their goal remains the same. It’s a huge undertaking, and I am delighted to announce that the life sciences team is now ready to graduate from our X lab and become a standalone Alphabet company, with Andy Conrad as CEO.  While the reporting structure will be different, their goal remains the same. They’ll continue to work with other life sciences companies to move new technologies from early stage R&D to clinical testing—and, hopefully—transform the way we detect, prevent, and manage disease.

The team is relatively new but very diverse including software engineers, oncologists, and optics experts.  This is the type of company we hope will thrive as part of Alphabet and I can’t wait to see what they do next.___

Project Sunroof is awesome!

I love this new 20% project from Google. They take a bunch of high-resolution Google Earth data and figure out how much sunlight individual houses get. Currently, this is live for the Bay Area and Fresno in California, plus the Boston area. So you can get a pretty good estimate of whether solar panels would save money on your house. Hint: solar makes sense for a lot more people than you'd think!

You can even connect directly with several different solar panel providers if you'd like to start saving money now. I hope that Google expands this even more widely at some point.

Edit: By the way, here's one more reason why this kicks butt. The price of solar is dropping so much that the cost of solar panel modules isn't the primary factor as much anymore. Instead, the overall cost of solar installation, including cost for... more »

Edit: By the way, here's one more reason why this kicks butt. The price of solar is dropping so much that the cost of solar panel modules isn't the primary factor as much anymore. Instead, the overall cost of solar installation, including cost for solar installers to find customers, is one of the larger factors now. If Project Sunroof can help solar customers and solar installers find each other more easily, that just pushes solar to be even cheaper and more widely accessible. If you're interested, see http://rameznaam.com/2015/08/10/how-cheap-can-solar-get-very-cheap-indeed/ for a little more about this.___

What Watermelons Used to Look Like

You've probably seen a watermelon and think you know what they look like, and you'd be partly right.  Modern watermelons look like the image on the right below.

But do you see that image on the left?  That's a watermelon as depicted by a Renaissance artist.

As you can see, selective breeding has had quite an effect on it.  In truth, many of the fruits and vegetables we eat today are quite different from their counterparts of previous centuries.

Calorific Rays: We all know that a prism can separate ordinary light into the vibrant colors of the rainbow. Calorific Rays: We all know that a prism can separate ordinary light into the vibrant colors of the rainbow. Back in 1800, musician and astronomer William Herschel wanted to know the temperature of each color. By placing a thermometer with a blackened bulb along the spectrum, he discovered that the red end was warmer than the blue. To his surprise, a thermometer placed just beyond the visible red part of the spectrum was even warmer. He had discovered infrared rays, although he didn't realize it at the time. This is the same heat that you feel when you hold your hand near a fire.

Bond. Covalent Bond. Shaken and Stirred: Chemicals are arrangements of atoms, held together by bonds. You can think of these bonds as tiny springs in motion. They stretch, wiggle, rotate and twist. When they absorb energy, the natural vibrations of bonds increase. Because of quantum mechanical constraints, these increases occur only to discrete energy levels. Different bond types (C-O, or C-H) and different vibration modes result in a series of absorptions at different wavelengths. By looking at which wavelengths of light were absorbed by a compound, we can deduce what types of chemical bonds are in the sample. Absorbances in the near infrared region of the spectrum can be so complex that they give rise to unique fingerprints of different chemicals.

Citizen Science: Spectrometers built with near infrared technology used to be large, expensive and restricted to universities. That's changing! The handheld spectrometer transmits chemical signatures to a smartphone which checks the pattern against a huge library of compounds in the "cloud" and returns the analysis to you within seconds. When you use it, not only will you be learning more about the chemical world around you but you'll also be helping to build a database of knowledge of the stuff around us. Now that's citizen science!

This gives you a clear measure of how much of a scientific achievement is today's flight over Pluto.

We've come a long way in understanding Pluto since its discovery by American astronomer Clyde Tombaugh in 1930. Today, thanks to our New Horizons spacecraft, the dwarf planet is cleared than ever before. http://go.nasa.gov/1Ht2uwj___This gives you a clear measure of how much of a scientific achievement is today's flight over Pluto.

This won't go well with people that already have a hard time understanding that we are not, from an evolutionary stand point, any more advanced than chimps.

Microsoft has just fired Mark Penn, the man behind the Scroogle campaign. What took them so long? The man is one of the main reasons Microsoft looked so pathetically incompetent (http://www.wired.com/2013/11/what-is-microsoft-thinking-with-these-goofy-anti-google-products). Despite his slowness to act, I like the direction Nadella is taking the company. More innovation, less buffoonery.

This is a beautiful commercial. I'm so happy to see the swelling support for same sex marriage here in Australia since the Ireland vote. Looks like there is no turning back now, despite the joke of a PM we have.
