Chill Ideaz Jay Beek Rocksuperstar0Here's the latest update of my Engagers circle. The last version of this circle was close to full, so I started it again from scratch. This circle includes people who have recently engaged with one of my posts in the form of +1s, comments and public reshares.I might have missed some people because of limitations of the Google+ interface. Fortunately, the next release of +Circloscope on June 28 is likely to include new features that make circles like this one much easier to create.I've included 100 guest members in this circle, taken from my Favourites circle, which I haven't shared in a while.Like my previous circle share, this is a Showcase circle! What this means is that everyone is invited to leave a comment on (the original post of) this circle share containing a link to one of your own posts. Ideally, this should be something that you posted recently and that you are particularly pleased with. (Don't post spam though; I will delete it.)2013-11-24 00:22:24405014

Dallas McMillan7,412Circle from the land downunder - Australia's top 200 PlussersWho are Australia's most followed people on Google Plus?I've put together this circle of Australia's top 200 profiles (by follower numbers - not engagement - some aren't particularly active) on Google Plus. It's pretty interesting to see the types of profiles which make the cut. Here is my quick overview:By far the most dominant characteristic of the top 200 are photographers - professional and amateur. The other notable individuals are a couple of cricketers in the top 10, a smattering of celebrity chefs, musicians, writers, artists, models and other celebrities. There are also fair numbers of Google employees, IT workers, social media and marketing types as well as a decent number of scientists and mathematicians. The only politician I noticed was Malcolm Turnbull - the Prime Minister and Leader of the opposition are conspicuous by their absence.I got the list from +CircleCount http://www.circlecount.com/au/profileslist/ and I've made a few tweaks - removing a couple of profiles that were inactive or had moved away from Australia. There were a number of others which probably don't belong as they now work in the USA or elsewhere.  #australia   #australianphotographers   #circleshare  I've notified members of the circle - let me know if you don't want to be listed.2013-08-04 14:24:522009213

Richard Green12,571Here's an updated circle of people who have either +1ed, reshared, or commented on one of my posts recently.  This includes indirect public reshares, but only +1s and comments on the original posts.Since the circle is nearly full, I only included new people if they engaged with one of my non-circle-share posts.  Also, I excluded posts with over 100 +1s, for two reasons:(a) hot posts attract low-quality comments, including spam comments, and(b) as far as I can tell, Google won't give you a full list of people who plus-oned your post if there are more than 100 of them; the same goes for reshares. Thanks for reading my posts!2013-05-13 21:33:26483712686

Richard Green10,142Yes: I've made it to 10,000 followers!  To celebrate, here's a once-only share of a circle I'm calling the Surprisingly Successful Mashup Circle.  It contains:1. the most recent share of my Thankers circle (people who thank other people for including them in a circle that happens to contain me as well);2. the most recent share of my Engagers circle (people who +1, reshare and comment on my posts);3. my Plus Ten circle, which was a great idea that didn't work (people who post things with more than 10 plus-ones);4. the people and pages mentioned below.I'd like to thank the following:+Science on Google+: A Public Database for giving me most of my first 1,200 followers;+Full Circle, +JUSTIN MATTHEW, +Cesare Riccardo, +Trever McGhee, +Ludovic Moreeuw and +Euro Maestro for repeatedly sharing me in their high-impact circles; and+Shaker Cherukuri for implanting the idea in my head, inception-style, that having 10,000 followers would somehow be a cool idea.  (I think there should be a verb "inceive", meaning "to put an idea into someone's head, like in the film Inception.")Caution: having lots of followers doesn't mean that people will read your posts.  But it certainly helps! And here's the circle.2013-04-25 00:39:34498823590

Disruption accomplished!

Remember those crappy netbook keyboards and displays? What most don't know is that, until recently, the "Wintel" duo did not allow OEMs to build and sell decent sub-$500 "netbooks" so not to hurt sales of higher-margin "full laptops". Disrupting that situation was one of ChromeOS original goals.

One of Project Loon’s earliest Eureka moments was the idea that we could provide continuous Internet connection not by keeping balloons stationary over a given location (which would require lots and lots of energy to work against the wind) but by coordinating a fleet of balloons to work with the wind, such that when one balloon leaves a location another moves into its place to continue providing connectivity. In theory, this means that any individual balloon would provide connection in one place and then, days later, provide connection at another location at the opposite end of the world. In our latest long distance LTE test this is exactly what we achieved!

Launched from New Zealand, our globe-connecting balloon made the first leg its journey travelling 9000 km over the Pacific Ocean. Approaching our test location in Chile at a speed of 80 km/h, a command was sent for the balloon to rise intoa... more »

Approaching our test location in Chile at a speed of 80 km/h, a command was sent for the balloon to rise into a wind pattern that slowed it down to a quarter of its speed, allowing it to drift overhead members of the Loon operations team who were able to connect to the balloon via smartphones on our test-partner mobile network.

Hanging around for half an hour to complete the connection testing, the balloon was then sent off on the winds over the South Atlantic ocean towards its next test location, over 10,000 km away in Australia! Our balloon completed this second leg of the journey in just 8 days, travelling over 1000 km per day and reaching a top speed of 140 km/h while whizzing over the ocean south of Africa. Once at the east coast of Australia the Loon Mission Control team implemented a series of altitude maneuvers to catch different winds and reverse the balloon path, lining it up to directly overfly our test location. Having travelled over 20,000 km around the world the balloon flew overhead at a ground distance of less than 500 meters away from our target (well within the 40,000 meter radius required for connection) to provide over 2 hours of Internet connection. That level of precision is like hitting a hole-in-one in golf from over 4 km away!

Tests like this give us real insight into how Project Loon can work at scale. With more balloons in the stratosphere and more Telco partners around the world capable of supporting Loon internet traffic, our ability to provide continuous connection in rural and remote areas will only increase. ___

A constant goal in Google's product development is shortening the time to task completion (even at the cost of fewer ad prints). This is one of those cases.

How could you make Chrome omnibox more powerful? One way the chromium team is experimenting with is Answers in Suggest. By enabling the eponymous flag at chrome://flags/#answers-in-suggest, responses to certain types of queries will appear directly in the Omnibox suggestion list.

Try it out with a weather query for instance in Chrome Canary and notice the inline picture weather in the results. You can also play with "1+1", "what is the answer to life the universe and everything", "1ml in oz", etc.

Very powerful video.

We asked the +United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) team in Sweden why they chose to use images from Google Search in their latest video, “The Search for Syria.” Here’s what they had to say:

"The violent conflict in Syria has been going on for almost 4 years forcing almost 4 million people to flee their home and seek protection with UNHCR in the neighbouring countries. We saw a risk of people losing focus on the humanitarian emergency and wanted to get people's attention.

Google is an everyday tool for people and can transport us to other places in a microsecond. By using Google search we were able to cut the mental distance between us in Sweden and emergency in Syria. It made it real."

This is the scariest statistics I've ever seen about the state of the world economy. If the recent great recession was bad, imagine the destructive potential of the next crisis. We will not get into a true path of recovery until a good chunk of this debt is destroyed. This will, of course, only happen as last resort, which means it will have to get real bad before the elites accept that inescapable reality. I just hope it doesn't take a war.

Global debt has risen by $57 trillion since 2007—an annual increase of 5.3%. If the financial sector is excluded, no leading economy has managed to reduce its debt-to-GDP ratio; 14 countries have seen their ratios rise by more than 50 percentage points. The world is still addicted to debt, and doesn't seem to be kicking the habit http://econ.st/1E9VKQE___This is the scariest statistics I've ever seen about the state of the world economy. My sense is -- and I'm only speaking for myself, of course -- is that Google is wonderfully and enormously user-centrically concerned about overly broad "requests" by the government for user data. And across the board, the government will not get the "nod and wink" non-warrant cooperation that they've perhaps gotten used to when dealing with Big Telecom and the like. Again, just my personal opinion.

I think that this article does a good job of describing what the world will look like once (once, not if) autonomous cars have taken over completely, and the many ways in which this will make all of our lives a lot better. (Saved lives, saved time, less pollution, less cost to each of us individually, etc) However, I think he grossly overestimates the speed of the transition: by 2025 I'd expect to see large-scale experiments rolling out, but I wouldn't expect to reach the final equilibrium point he's describing until 2050 at the soonest.

I think that he also underestimates the violence with which these changes will be resisted. As he points out, several existing industries are likely to be cratered, most notably car manufacture (autonomous cars serving people on-demand could be active 95% of the time, versus 4% of the time for passenger cars today; that's a 24x reduction in the... more »

I think that he also underestimates the violence with which these changes will be resisted. As he points out, several existing industries are likely to be cratered, most notably car manufacture (autonomous cars serving people on-demand could be active 95% of the time, versus 4% of the time for passenger cars today; that's a 24x reduction in the number of cars needed per person) and professional drivers. We're already seeing tremendous resistance by vested interests in the existing taxi business to even ordinary competition like Uber; what will happen when it starts to become clear to them that the entire business is about to go away, never to return?

In this regard, I think that we can draw useful lessons from the collapse of the longshoreman industry with the rise of containerized shipping. On the US' West Coast, strong longshore unions negotiated a phased shutdown with shipping companies; on the East Coast, weak unions spent more time fighting and undercutting each other than negotiating, and the net result was a serious collapse of all shipping to those ports, with the longshoremen bearing the brunt of it. Marc Levinson's book The Box has an interesting discussion of this. I suspect that similar phenomena will be seen here.

But even more so than with the transition to containerized shipping, the transition to autonomous vehicles is likely inevitable: the advantages are too large and too widespread, and the disadvantages too limited, for groups to successfully be able to prevent it for their own interest.___

High levels of family solidarity and emotional closeness between parents and nonreligious youth, and strong ethical standards and moral values that had been clearly articulated as they were imparted to the next generation.

'Many nonreligious parents were more coherent and passionate about their ethical principles than some of the religious parents in our study,' Bengston told me. 'The vast majority appeared to live goal-filled lives characterized by moral direction and sense of life having a purpose.' ”

"They ignore the smarter questions. They ignore the fact that 45% of disabled people in the US still work. They ignore the fact that 95% of a car's lifetime is spent parked. They ignore how this technology could transform the lives of the elderly, or eradicate the need for parking lots or garages or gas stations. They dismiss the entire concept because they don't think a computer could ever be as good at merging on the freeway as they are. "

"For me it’s like the difference between blood-letting and penicillin. Ok, we have no clue what’s going on so we’re just going to bleed it out of you because we don’t know what else to do (...) Say you have cancer, you have this broad thing we call cancer, we’re going to irradiate you, and pump this poisonous material into you and hope more of the bad stuff dies than the good. That is going to seem so medieval when we can fix it on a genetic level"
