Mass transit makes strange bedfellows, it seems. With the railway bridge in Warsaw partially closed for repairs, I’m forced to switch trains on my way to work, and that nets me interesting conversation partners from time to time. Today, with a fellow traveller, we’ve been complaining about modern democracy and media influence on it. Our conclusions, however, were mostly pessimistic - with voters unable or unwilling to see past the politicians’ external image, created almost exclusively by the media, democracy quickly devolves into a tyranny of fools.

I've never bought anything from Anvil Industry, but the more I look at their designs, the more I like them. No frills, no skulls, no overly exaggerated poses, what's not to like?

Happy New Year, people! Despite the fact that I'm not a social person, I've decided, once and for bloody all, that enough is enough, and that I should at least pretend that I give a damn about a service I've started using about a month after its closed beta launch. Expect to see more of me while I get off my lazy ass and do something about my digital footprint, because right now it looks horrible, and I'm seriously pissed off about that. Herding cats, what's not to like about that?

It's been a long day, and I'm rather pissed off by the amount of work I had to go through - sometimes paperwork resembles, to quote George Patton, shoveling shit in Louisiana - so I'm treating myself to a marathon of Cinema Sins clips on YouTube, mixed with Honest Trailers and How It Should Have Ended. Even though I was aware of most of the dumb errors in movies I've seen, fishing through the pools of mainstream cinema stupidity is funny and sad in equal measure. Fortunately, high level special effects are still too expensive, TV shows are, at least for now, safe from the Hollvwood's "screw the script and acting ability, let's throw more explosions in" disease - otherwise, I'd throw my TV long ago.

The miniatures look nice, posting the photo however... seriously, Google needs to stop assuming too much about its users. Language settings exist for a reason.

There's a fantastic stanza in the Poetic Edda about the importance of keeping one's mouth shut. If I recall correctly, it boils down to the fact, that a fool taking part in a gathering can be identified immediately after he starts talking. Therefore, a man devoid of wit should refrain from speaking and thus avoid his peers' ridicule. Unfortunately, celebrities are largely unaware of such pearls of ancient wisdom, and tend to talk too much, and think in moderation. Case in point, Dennis Rodman, trying to buddy up with the current satrap in Pyongyang, and sell his harebrained scheme as "basketball diplomacy". Are you going to organize Kim's birthday event in a gulag, or will a ballistic missile launch pad be enough, Wormy?

I've read a fun article on technological teething problems today, namely Norwegian woes with F-35 fighter development. As much as I consider the entire program to be a waste of money, especially since the resulting birds cost about 100 million dollars per seat, I can't stand the amount of uninformed blathering about it coming from the self-appointed Internet experten and predictably uninformed journalists. Cut the engineers some slack, people. Nothing, not even shiny wannabe starfighters - Hell, the problems with Lightnings don't even come close to woes caused by Lockheed's supersonic coffins - works without sweat, tears, and coffee spilt in its name.

I was so going to devote my today's rant to feminist bitching and moaning caused by Camille Paglia's latest interview in The Wall Street Journal. After all, there are few things as entertaining as members of the Misotheist Church of Patriarchy throwing unsubstantiated claims mixed with expletives around. Still, with all the fuss about Edward Snowden, I simply could not ignore a juicy story about Cisco's earnings in 2013. So, how's doing business with the NSA going for you, people? Have you found out that getting caught violating your customers' trust is a surefire way to kill your business yet?

You might consider me bitter, but every time I fire up my browser to peek at the reflection of the global society the Internet provides, I fear the worst, and, more often than not, my fears are substantiated. Today, I've just had to stumble on yet another copy of the good old "Christianity versus Science" chart +Mike Elgan had once posted. Seriously, I can't help to wonder what would it take to put the myth of medieval backwardness to rest at last, since modern history of science, even after ripping antiquated tenets of the conflict thesis into shreds, remains impotent in the face of ideologically driven bullshit.

While my recent favorite, as far as television series are concerned, isn't that high tech, whenever cyberpunk appears on the scene, a proper illustration of it is obligatory. Fortunately, Andrew Porter has an extensive science fiction portfolio, and his image of dystopian Chiba City - with an image from Street View used as template, no less - is quite a treat for anyone who remembers Gibson. There's little sky to be seen, but I'm sure it looks exactly like a television screen turned to a dead channel.

I've just read a story about a group of feminists descending upon Wikipedia in order to make it more balanced. I really shouldn't laugh too hard, but the irony is overwhelming: a highly politicized group with a constant chip on its collective shoulder injecting its dogma into a project constantly struggling with objectivity. What could go wrong, apart from edit wars, name calling, accusations of misogyny and blatant threats? Watch out, people, you might not recognize the place once the social justice  warriors team up and start making sure their version of truth is the only one available. After all, righteousness of the cause makes the truth they peddle most truthful of them all.

After the bitter comment, something uplifting would be required - and few things show the ingenuity of Mankind better than its technological progress. Sadly, we're still a few years from building massive edifices that would put Ozymadias to shame, concept artists though are free of earthly restrictions, and Hideyoshi Ruuwe is no exception, with the grandeur of his piece.

The world is probably ranting about chemical warfare in Syria, or Bradley Manning's conviction. Fine, let it - there are enough outraged people to create a social networking avalanche. Me, I'm looking at the jubilation caused by today's visit of Maersk's largest container ship in a Polish port, filled to the brim with Chinese goods - and I tremble in impotent anger. The West has all but abandoned its industrial roots, apart from a few individuals swimming against the current. It's already biting us in the behind, with Chinese ambitions in Africa, and Spratly Islands disputes, and it's going to get worse. The fabled Japanese encroachment into America back in the 1980's is already a cheap joke in comparison.

Finding quality pencil art, especially with a high tech subject, isn't as hard as one might think. Fortunately, many artists integrate natural media into their workflow, producing remarkable sketches, later translated into digital paintings or models. The work of Arturo Pahua fits the bill nicely, and it's even more interesting since it betrays his into his workflow, making the people who admire his gallery notice, that  quite a lot of his ideas start on paper, not screen.

We live in the digital age, or at least we believe that is the case, with more and more of traditional avenues of our activity either transitioning completely into their computer-powered equivalents, or being extended with tools of binary provenience. Still, for all the brilliance of modern electronics, some habits are hard to kick for people who still remember the unplugged times. I used to think that having a tablet would make me completely independent of paper, but then, I regularly catch myself wishing for a pencil and notepad when I want to sketch my ideas. Quaint, isn't it?

Whenever I'm in need of cheap entertainment, Huffington Post comments are just the medium that can make me laugh out loud, though, sadly, usually at the expense of other people. Having bumped into a story of Detroit's museums in danger of being sold piecemeal, with works of art landing in private hands, never to be seen by the general public, the outrage reminded me of the common "sell the Vatican, feed the world" mantra, usually repeated by people whose only claim to fame is having a working Internet connection. Still, I guess some works of art are more worthy than others, and rich people deserve to buy priceless antiques to keep them from the unwashed masses - at least as long as they take said antiques from people the masses don't like.

All right, people, for my first post here, here's a crazy idea I've been toying with for a while, being a treadhead of the worst kind. Having access to a laser cutter, I've been thinking of designing some armored vehicle hulls as blank canvas for further scratchbuilding, and then making them out of plywood or plastic. The crazy part is that I'd like to make the designs modular, in order to mix and match sizes and styles and thus be able to produce anything from a low tech armored car to a futuristic grav tank. I'm actually thinking of using Kickstarter or something similar to get funding for my own cutter and better 3D software, but the question is whether anyone would actually go for it. So, the question is: would a service delivering blank vehicle bodies for assembly, built out of interchangeable modules chosen by the customer, possibly with resin add-ons, actually be viable? I'll elaborate if need be, right now it's a shot in the dark. For inspiration, take a look at John Bear Ross and his RUM-V system - it's been my primary inspiration, although it is certainly more "shake and bake" than any of my possible designs.___

After all the heavyweights of the deviantArt concept artist community, I'd say someone less famous would provide a refreshing change of pace. Still, with his attention to detail, and a good eye for mechanical design, I strongly suspect Ludrovan Laslo will not remain a freelancer for long. The entertainment industry is always hurting for more creative people, after all.

Yesterday, 93 years ago - a date which, to this day, causes all orphans of Marxism immeasurable amounts of grief - barely restored Poland, defending its fragile sovereignty, has repulsed the armies of the Soviet Union from Warsaw, routing the wannabe conquerors of Europe and delaying their plans for almost twenty years. By now, "Killing Monsters", the newest trailer for "Witcher 3" should be the most debated YouTube video of the day, and if you haven't seen it yet, it's only a Google search away. Sure, it's gorgeous, in its pre-rendered glory, and grisly, befitting a crapsack world Geralt lives in, but the most important part is that, once again when we take past novels and games into consideration, it hammers into the viewers the ugly truth that humans are monsters par excellence. The bitter aftertaste comes when the movie dies, and we realize that what we've seen isn't exceptionally horrible, in comparison to some of mankind's past atrocities, and that monsters are all around us, dormant until the moment when civilization and morality fall.

There are people who use Google - excuse me, Trimble, ever since Mountain View went out of the "3D for everyone" business - Sketchup, and then, there's a certain digital artist from Irkutsk, whose work probably makes other people weep bitter tears at their inability to match his talent. Faint-hearted beware, his gallery should come with a medical disclaimer.

I should be writing something deep and profound, either on the sheer stupidity of Stephen Fry and his open letter to David Cameron, or the reasons sending money to Africa props up all the local bastards. Due to the fact that my flat resembles a disaster area worthy of New Orleans after Katrina, I intend to flout my obligations, and die in peace instead, dreaming of KISS kitchen furniture by IKEA. Damn the world, I'm getting out.

I've spent the last two hours in a long queue to deliver a single sheet memo to the local court, and standing there, I've started to muse. How beautiful, and less wasteful would be a world without paperwork, not only with streamlined procedures and less complicated rules, but without the necessity to use paper at all? Sadly, we will probably never see the dawn of fully electronic communication, at least not without a major shift in attitudes that permeate various bureaucratic structures of the world, and not without more technological advancements - a man can dream, however, especially when its over 30 degrees Celsius, and he's just one unlucky soul in a great crowd of similar unfortunates.

I am remotely amused by the whole spectacle surrounding the newest member of the British Royal Family - after all, it's the media going, pardon my directness, batshit insane over something completely insignificant - what takes the cake, however, are certain social groups going even further. With feminists bemoaning the fact that the royal baby is not female, and social justice fanatics screaming against oppressive "gender binary" due to calling little George "a boy", you can't get any crazier. Grow up, people. Not everything in the world is about "smashing da patriarchy" or being yet another genderqueer special snowflake.

Not everything in the world is about "smashing da patriarchy" or being yet another genderqueer special snowflake.___

Pornography, compared to the reality of human sexual experience, is about as realistic, as an Ed Wood flick, without all the "so terrible, it's actually good" cult following. Constant commercialization and trivialization of sex is one of the ugliest trends of today's culture. Still, when the government decides that porn is evil, and moves to censor it, the citizens, as politicians' employers, should respond with a roar of outrage. Despite not being British, I'll keep mine brief: David Cameron, if you start censoring porn, who knows what will you censor later, so shut up, and scrap your harebrained scheme, before you get any more brilliant ideas.

A quick comparison for all people who believe in socialized healthcare, based on its performance in a state where it's been kept alive and kicking for the last twenty years or so, the age of workers' paradise, ahem, not included: patients in state-run hospitals - annoying people who need to go away and stop bothering the staff, patients in privately-run clinics - people who need help, and are willing to pay for it despite the fact that the state takes their money to provide them with its own brand of inferior quality services. The fact that private medical companies are so popular in my neighborhood speaks for itself pretty loudly.

Seeing the amount of social media memetic riffraff calling for some form of extrajudicial "justice" to be visited upon George Zimmerman, I'm quickly reminded of two things. First, public opinion is usually neither intelligent, nor informed, yet it's always ready to pass judgement, usually formed solely on the basis of what passes as truth in the media. Second, regardless of political leanings, almost everyone is willing to demand their brand of justice and morality to be enforced, even against the standing rules, when things do not go their way. What a civilized society we make.

With a doodle of a lonely black cat sitting on a parapet - a reference to one of the most insightful poems on mortality - Google is celebrating today the 90th birthday of Wisława Szymborska. Awarded with the Nobel Prize in Literature for her poetic virtuosity in 1996, she has turned out to be one of its least controversial recipients in recent years, doubly so in comparison with some of the Swedish academicians’ earlier choices. Due to her political leanings back in 1950’s, her legacy, if not her talent, remains a polarizing topic in Poland to this day.

It certainly has been a while, hasn't it? Truth be told, nothing has made me more aware of the fact, than facing the horrors of the new Google+ user interface at first hand. Of course, it’s not like I can’t live with inconsistent design, just don’t expect me to refrain from writing snide comments about it, or, indeed, about anything else that might be of interest. Taught by past mistakes, I’ve decided not to make any long term plans when it comes to the frequency of my ranting - unfortunate souls keeping me in their Circles, however, should prepare for the worst.
