This is Austin Pass Lake in the Heather Meadows and Bagley Lakes area of the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest of Washington State, USA.  The snow is melting out quickly this year so this will again be a location I will photograph this summer/fall.  I am looking forward to it.

Mountain Monday Recap

So this recap is a bit different in that it encompasses the last two weeks.  Did anyone notice I didn't post a recap last week?  Last week either due to low participation or being unable to find the posts with the G+ search, I didn't get enough to post a recap.  So some of these are from last week.  As participation wanes (this theme is almost 4 years old now) I'll simply collect things as usual and release a recap as the numbers permit.

Thanks to everyone who participated in #MountainMonday this week - and every week. Here are a few of the participating photographs from Mountain Monday:

Mount Shuksan Tarn Reflection

I have posted a number of photos from a Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest visit I made last fall - but I don't think I had yet included this photograph from Huntoon Point.  This is a fairly popular photography spot, but this was the first time I had found conditions of interest there.  More in my blog post:  http://photoblog.mrussellphotography.com/mount-shuksan-tarn-reflection/

I am no hiking expert but I can definitely advise that a steaming thermos of soup is not a dinner that hits the spot after a long, sweaty hike.  Certainly a planning failure...

Also, don't leave your hiking boots and bear spray at home in the driveway...

Kangaroo Ridge

A few weeks ago I shared a different image of Kangaroo Ridge - after the sun had set.  This photograph was made earlier, and it shows how different a scene can look in under 25 minutes.  This location is in the North Cascades of the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest in Washington State, USA.  Those familiar with the area will recognize the shadow of Liberty Bell starting to show along the bottom of the peaks pictured here.

Baby Eastern Cottontail Rabbit

Not sure I've ever shared an image the same day I made it, but there is always a first time!  I photographed this baby Eastern Cottontail (Sylvilagus floridanus) that was hiding in the weeds in my backyard this afternoon. The adult rabbits can be approximately 44cm (17 in) long – and a few that forage in my backyard seem even larger than that, but this little one was only about 15cm (6 in).  Very small!

For more on this visit my blog post: http://photoblog.mrussellphotography.com/baby-eastern-cottontail-rabbit/

Song Sparrow (Melospiza melodia)

A Song Sparrow (Melospiza melodia) was kind enough to hang out next to my spot on the boardwalk at Elgin Heritage Park near Crescent Beach, British Columbia.  I was there for the Red-winged Blackbirds, but while they are much more colourful and interesting, none were interested in approaching my position.  So when this Song Sparrow started singing, I was able to make a number of photographs and record a few videos as well.

You can see more of my bird photos in my gallery: http://mrussellphotography.photoshelter.com/gallery/Birds-Photos/G00000Jk_PN0IWhs/C0000dUF3SoX_ITs

Kangaroo Ridge in the North Cascades

I made this photo back in 2012 in the meadows near Washington Pass - a location with many great photography possibilities.  The last direct sunset light had already disappeared from Kangaroo Ridge, but this purple alpenglow was still in the sky and the ridge and I quite like the results.

A photograph I made a few weeks ago from Boundary Bay Regional Park in Tsawwasen, British Columbia, Canada.  I liked how the Alex Fraser Bridge, Cypress Mountain and the peaks in the Coast Range lined up in one photo.  This is a location I will probably return to a few times to get exactly what I want - lots of views in that area.  For more photographs from the Vancouver, Coast and Mountains area of British Columbia - visit my Image Library: http://mrussellphotography.photoshelter.com/gallery/Vancouver-Coast-Mountains-Pictures/G00009XbWIHvJgDQ/

Working on a client's website tonight and helping them find and license some images.  While this is somewhat backwards from my usual position, I am noticing one annoying thing.  Many photographers do not seem to have alternate perspectives on their subjects.  If I find a great photograph of a certain thing, and your photograph is landscape but I really need it to be portrait orientation this is a problem. Looking for alternative orientations of the same photographs tonight, it appears that not many photographers are considering this.  I realize for some subjects alternative perspectives are difficult or impossible, but not for 95% of what I am looking for tonight.  Just saying. :)

Ok - so I'm seeing some confusion about collections amongst my photo friends about collections...

Let me try to unconfuse you...

What I'm seeing is that people aren't sure about the check box that makes your collections automatically followed by your circlers.

People are afraid that they are going to be spamming people with things they don't want to see if they keep this box checked.

Let me explain:

Your followers follow you, right?  Right now they see (or potentially see) every thing you post publicly.  It doesn't matter what it is.  It could be your scenic photos, your caturday photos, your political posts, your stories about your grandma...   they see it all without collections.  right?

Ok...  so, now, enter collections...

When you create a collection, the default is for all of your followers to be automatically following the collection.  If you make your collection public, they will still see everything you post.  Nothing has changed at all.  You're not spamming anyone - it's business as usual.

Now, let's say that you uncheck that box...  so that your followers are NOT automatically following your collection.  Now, when you post to that collection ONLY the people who have found that collection and followed it will see those posts.  So.. if Joe unchecks that box for his "super de dooper star trails" collection - I will no longer see them..  most likely because I don't know they exist - because they will not be in my stream any more.  The only way I'll see them is to visit Joe's page.. and let's face it.... who has time to visit Joe's page and everyone else that they circle?

Yeah - not many of us..

So...  right now you may be asking "what's the point?"

Well, here's the point...

If Joe has a collection for his star trails and his caturday and his grandmom's stories and his political posts, I can pick and choose what I want to see.  I can visit his page, check out his collections and unfollow the political posts and the caturday photos.

The damn guy posts 5 cat photos each Saturday and he starts on Friday night and still is going strong on Sunday.  I'm sick of his political rants and even though I love to see his star trails, he's pissing me off and I just can't take it any more... so I'm thinking about uncircling him..

but now I don't have to.  I can just uncircle his Caturday and poliitical collections!  I don't have to be annoyed by him and he no longer has to feel that he shouldn't post certain things because it will annoy people.

But he HAS to use his collections for this to work.

On the other hand..  if his star trails are the ONLY thing of his I want to see - I can just follow that collection and I don't have to circle him if I don't want to - kind of nice for people who's circles are full, right?

amiright?!! ;)

Ok, so hopefully that cleared some stuff up for you.

For my own use, I have created a few collections.  they are all checked to be automatically followed with the exception of one.  I feel that the people who follow me here do it for my photos, so it's ok for me to have them following my photos.  My yoga collection, however, I unchecked - because that's not what the majority of my followers follow me for.  It's out of my norm.  I created it mostly for me to keep cool ideas and things that I can refer back to - if someone else finds it useful they can follow along.  I can now keep that collection on my own page and not in my follower's streams and bother them with stuff they may not want to see from me.

I can see this being a valuable asset moving forward for us to all fine tune our streams to make them more of what WE want to see - but it takes a village to raise a child.. or in this case...  a community to clean up their act.  ;)___

This is a "new" view of Cascade Falls (northeast of Mission, BC) for me as this was my first time over the new suspension bridge there.  Luckily I managed to get there as a cloud was covering the sun - and I had an evenly lit scene for this photograph.  Sometimes you don't need a cloudy day, you just need a cloud.   More about this, and the new suspension bridge, in my blog post:  http://photoblog.mrussellphotography.com/cascade-falls-suspension-bridge/

Mount Robbie Reid

On Wednesday I headed into the Fraser Valley to photograph Cascade Falls, but on the way I stopped as I finally found an angle to photograph Mount Robbie Reid from this area.  I'd like to find a better perceptive but this will do for now. The dog in the property I was parked in front of, was not amused!  I don't have a blog post for this image, but I have posted my photographs from the waterfall here: http://photoblog.mrussellphotography.com/cascade-falls-suspension-bridge/

I spent last spring documenting a number of different rose varieties in my moms garden.  This one is the Red Leaved Rose.
