Sean Clark824A photowalk that (roughly) follows the path of last year's Maribyrnong walk and (less-roughly) stops at some of the sights of the soon-to-be-complete Regional Rail Link - City to Maribyrnong River Project.the routeA rough route is here. Happy to take suggestions and make changes:http://goo.gl/ycHjMIMeet at Footscray Station, finishing at the pub South Kensington Station. It's a bit of a hike (~3km on foot), and covers about 1/2 of the project, but there are some highlights that have been built by RRL-CMR including:- The new Maribyrnong River rail bridge - built to complement the heritage bridge that it sits beside- Street art by Makatron at South Kensington StationThere are also a few sights from the project's neighours:- The new Footscray Station (built by the adjoining project RRL-FDP)- The temple of the Heavenly Queen- South Kensington Skate Park- Lots (and lots) of +Cableicous action throughout the South Kensington area- Oh, and the fish-and-chip place at Conway - Must. Stop. There.Maribyrnong Photowalk2014-07-12 10:00:009
Paul Pavlinovich20,004Ok, even though we're not Americans we've got fireworks on July 4th this year too so why not get out and celebrate with a photowalk? I've moved this to under the Bolte Bridge for something different. There is usually parking up this end of Docklands Drive. We'll shoot either from under the bridge or more likely from the wasteland where the circus tent used to be. We'll be very close to the fireworks so wide angle would be useful but not essential. We should be able to get fireworks and bridge and if we're lucky fireworks and city. After the fireworks we'll make our way towards the death star for some night shots. Docklands walk and Fireworks2014-07-04 10:00:005
Paul Pavlinovich20,004We'll be walking from the Maribyrnong River to the Yarra River following as closely as possible the old goods railway line as it originally existed to move goods from one part of the port to another for distribution around Melbourne.Where there are available high points we'll take them to see the lights of the Port of Melbourne, The City on the skyline, and of course The Death Star. It's roughly a 6.5km walk plus detours. The faint of heart can shorted in by diverting onto the Capital City Trail after we cross Railway Canal. We'll meet at The Reverence Hotel in Footscray from 5pm and start the walk at dusk as the lights come up nicely for photography probably around 6.15pm. We'll finish at the pizza shop at the end of Webb Bridge where you can get take away for about $10 or eat and drink within if your pockets are deep.Everyone welcome.Map: https://mapsengine.google.com/map/edit?mid=z58dq65KDHgk.kmFUSfv1sWb4River2River Anniversary Photowalk2014-06-20 17:00:0021

0How well do you know the surrounding area you live in? Melbourne Photowalkers is a great community for organising and running photowalks in and around Melbourne. Many members of this community are not able to attend photowalks for various reasons. We have created this event to give everyone a chance to experience their own photowalk in your *local or surrounding suburb you live in*.    Try and capture something unique or unusual. Move out of your comfort zone and try to be creative.  Add a small description to your photo and you may encourage others to venture out and visit your local area and see what you have captured. *The best photo of the event, as judged by +Charles Strebor  will receive a 20" x 30" (50x76cm) Print on 250gsm Satin Photo Paper.*   Everyone has two weeks to complete the photowalk and submit their photos. You are allowed to enter up to two photos each. ( this will make it more difficult for +Charles Strebor to judge :) ) Event dates. *When: Today (22 of July 13)* *End:    Monday 5th of August.* Rules. Processed photos allowed. Paul Pavlinovich20,004Join us for another anniversary walk with all the usual and plenty of new faces from the Melbourne Photowalkers community.Walk starts and finishes at Collingwood Station. Food is available at The People's Market (expect to be there around 3pm) and after the official walk end at back near the town hall many of us will continue to the The Retreat Hotel for dinner and  beer. Here is the route https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=212211852192101909727.0004d81878e69719df99d&msa=0&ll=-37.803952,144.990327&spn=0.016598,0.033023It's not as long as it looks. Note I've changed the times to ensure we can get into The People's Market which is absolutely brilliant. We'll be going past loads of laneways with amazing street art which are not marked on the route (a few are). If you want to make your walk longer feel free to diverge down the laneways.Suggestions:. There is an urbex site - use commonsense and make your own choices. Down the laneways travel in at least pairs - this is a fairly dodgy place sometimes - this means you Margaret Wong!Google Anniversary Photowalk *COLLINGWALK*2013-03-23 03:00:0054

Paul Pavlinovich20,004Maribyrnong River Afternoon Photo WalkDUE TO WEATHER CONDITIONS THIS WALK HAS BEEN CHANGED TO AFTERNOON. IF YOU SHOW UP AT DAWN YOU WILL BE LONELY, COLD AND WETWhen: Saturday 2nd Feb Where: https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=212211852192101909727.0004d29a33b5533122c8a&msa=0Time: Starts 1.00pm at Quarry Park in Footscray  Station Finish 6.00pm near Newport on the river. Dedicated souls might like to continue to Williamstown for Dinner, I will be.This walk is in an industrial and park area along the river. An area in renaissance as it is reborn from Melbourne's industrial and ports to residential and small cottage industries. There are river views, port views, bridges, amazing graffiti. At the beginning we'll be treated to a fantastic sunrise over the city skyline directly along the river from our vantage point in Quarry Park.Quarry Park can be entered from Owens St. Very limited parking at both. Parking at Newport (or Williamstown if you're going to walk that far) then car pooling up to the walk start would be advisable.Things to know:. there are no public dunnies you'd actually want to use. there is nowhere to get water. Since its a long one carpooling and making arrangements to get a some cars to the finish would be a good ideaMaribyrnong Afternoon Photo Walk2013-02-02 03:00:1510

Lady Fran W7,044Can you make an ordinary running kitchen tap look fab? This challenge came about following a conversation in a thread with +Megan Huddle (thanks for the inspiration babe!). Whilst on a recent trip to New Zealand, I got my very first 'soft milky water' shot of a stream, and purely by luck. I had no ND filter, no tripod, just good light and a little bridge to lean the camera on. See here - http://goo.gl/Vpz58I'm now obsessed with trying out this kind of photography wherever I go. I'm searching for streams, waterfalls, beaches, you name it. +Megan Huddle suggested I could make anything look good (uber flattered). .. and so the challenge came about. A camera, an idea, and a plain old running tap in the kitchen sink.    Can you make it look fab?   I think you can. Work your magic. Show us what you’ve got.Any camera, and setting, any processing. It’s all open to your imagination and creativity.Sooooo, why not give it a go?  There's no prizes I'm afraid. No rewards. (Unless some super generous sponsor out there wants to throw something in as incentive.) Otherwise, it's all about the glowing recognition, compliments and praise from your G+ peers. Due date: 11:30pm, Friday 8 December Saturday 9 December -----------------------------------------------------------PS PUBLIC EVENT! - Apparently one can't invite large numbers of guests to an event (ie big circles), soooo, please feel free to forward this around and get people involved. =)Photo challenge - A simple tap2012-12-08 13:30:0072

You may want to tell us your thoughts behind its creation, any problems you overcame along the way or any other information you want to share. You can write as little (or as much) as you wish.- Your image must be posted by 23.59pm (AEST) on Saturday 20th October 2012.- It is preferred that your images are taken within the period of the challenge; please try not to use one from your archives. And most important of all - enjoy yourself!Weekly Photographic Challenge - Laughter2012-10-14 00:00:0013

Gailen Mapes67,544Hand Picked Photographers Circles - Canon Camera N-Q - 9 of 31Note: These circles are sorted by camera type and last name. They are split to not exceed 200 members. These circles are photographers that I admire. They have "more photos, less spam."  There have been many additions and a few drops (mostly for spam or inactivity). Be sure to get all of the circles. Share! If you miss any of the circles they can be found at: +Gailen Mapes and scroll back to September 1st for the start of this set.  (Previous complete set was published starting August 1st.)  You can also use the #handpickedcircles hash tag and sort by "recent."I am hard up against the 5000 limit. From here on, I am going to have to become rather more strict about the "spam rules." Essentially if I have to go back more than a screen on your profile before I hit original material, there is a good chance that I may drop you from the circles. Of course there will be mitigating factors...Because of the way that Google no longer presents every person who adds me to their circles to me it is quite possible that I have missed some pretty good photographers.  If I am following you, chances are that you are already in one of these circles or in my "check later" circle.  If you think you have been missed, tag a comment on one of these posts and I will check your profile out for inclusion.  Guidelines for inclusion can be found at:   https://plus.google.com/u/0/103752943025677384806/about#circleshare #circlesharing #circleoftheday   #sharedcircles   #sharedcircle #sharedpubliccircles   #fullcircleshare #addmetoyourcircles #pixelworld   #pixelworldcircle #circleoftheday #bestsharedcircle   #thebestcirclesongoogle #thebestcircle             #handpickedcircles             Note: the hash tag #handpickedcircles  should only be used to refer to these circles and other circles created by +2014-09-09 10:38:051356312

Gerard Blacklock23,700Gerry's Australian Photographers Circle Version 3Hey Aussie togs, this is a pretty big update to this circle from the last one, this time I have been more selective in the fact that inactive glus members get booted, the circle was over 600 and as such I needed to comply with 'the less than 500 requirement' hence culling was needed.Note, this is the only circle I share since I really have a interest in local content.Feel free to reshare as you see fit, the main purpose is to facilitate more engagement between local aussie togs. Please feel free to comment and let me know if you know anyone (or if you are indeed one) who is a quality, active and interesting Australian based photographer. Two great communities/themes to get involved with if you like Australia content is #photomaniaustralia +Photo Mania Australia and Australian Landscape Photography https://plus.google.com/u/0/communities/1060822645285719679572014-08-13 02:56:2844714219

I got a negative scanner today. I want to start loading all of dad's images. This is a selfie he took who knows where. I'm guessing it might be somewhere near Walhalla as in this roll there are some images from that town.

Wright Rd is probably the busiest of the dirt road unprotected crossings on Puffing Billy. It's not at all unusual to encounter cars on this crossing regardless of the time of day. Every time on track patrol I have to clean out the flangeways and the track bed as the gravel packs in from the motor traffic and makes high spots between the track that can foul passing equipment. This is especially true during winter when trains only run down this part of the line on weekends and holidays.

This is the 25 minute exposure at iso 50 f8 this evening. I really started it too late as I had to make the exposure longer and longer as the sky and seascape darkened, it needs more oomph. I've dragged it up as far as is practical without introducing a heap of noise but I'm not overly happy with this one. Need to do it much earlier in the afternoon next time.

Some time ago I promised to write about this rig. Since I'm doing a 20 minute exposure through black glass I thought I'd do it now.

The white thing is a tplink mr3040 3g wireless router running firmware from the openwrt project. I'm connected to it using dslr controller on my tablet and it via the router is controlling my camera. http://dslrcontroller.com/guide-wifi_mr3040.php

To me this is much simpler and easier than relying on some fiddly remote or intervalometer. The tablet software is keeping the shutter open for the exposure and will let me see the raw image full screen after its done.

It's all big which is good for my eyes as I get older :). The controls are fairly logical and simple to use.

Now onto the exposure. I'm shooting through black glass (aka big stopper) to allow this massive exposure. What I'm hoping for is enough... more »

Now onto the exposure. I'm shooting through black glass (aka big stopper) to allow this massive exposure. What I'm hoping for is enough movement on the water for a mist effect on the sea. The clouds should also end up streaky and as the sun sets the cumulative colour should be interesting. Of course it's also getting darker and darker so I've got one shot at this tonight. I'm actually wondering if 20 will be enough... I'm watching my battery indicator which has gone red with two minutes to go. Maybe I should have checked at the start :)___

An update on +Matthew Pavlinovich vce project. He's settled on his final three images and we'll be of to +Dots To Spots Printing for Matt to work with Andrew and Rebecca to get the best possible print outcome. I'll see if I can coax him into posting them tonight after the prints are done.

It's been hinted by his studio arts teacher that the school might be interested in buying a print of one of them. His teacher Jill wants one too, I'm going to suggest he gives her one as a thank you but as for the school, they need to pay. How much, now that's an interesting question.

Thanks again to those of you mentioned below who gave their time and tea lights for Matt on that chilly evening in the inner burbs.

Last night to help +Matthew Pavlinovich with his chosen VCE Studio Arts subject where he's taken on Light Painting as his subject of choice a pile of people from the Melbourne Photowalkers community converged onto the disused railway tunnel under The Avenue in Brunswick (or is it Parkville?)... anyway. We laid out hundreds (literally) of tea lights, set up some battery coloured lighting and then spun fire and led poi and steel wool. I didn't capture many shots because it's not why I was there. The scene took on a look from Back To The Future.

The original plan didn't work out because since the last visit massively bright lighting has been installed in the tunnel. So we used the bike path instead. The local cyclists loved the show and we even had some late night family strollers stop to watch.

Thanks to +Charles Strebor +morte oakley and Willow +Leigh Wheeler  and her tribe and +Michelle Richter  who all helped set up the hundreds of tea lights. Thanks to +Charles Strebor and +Lachlan Downing (and me!) for the spinning.

On the night we met up with +Charles Strebor +Leigh Wheeler +Andrew Fenwick +Rebecca Fenwick +Liz A +Vikki Sinnott +Nicky Doyle +ashley bateson +Lady Fran W +Margaret Wong +morte oakley  +Ben Wesley +Michelle Richter +Kelvin Morrison and +Gem Hodges oh and a few others...

The g|+|ost town went all out in this evening of fun and show of support for Matt. He's got some great images (better than mine :) and is well positioned for his final portfolio. Let the editing begin.___An update on +Matthew Pavlinovich vce project.

Ah its that time after a brilliant weekend of Sherbrooke district Cohen Shield and Patrol Games at GWS Anderson Scout camp in Officer where we changed the format from previous years to the delight of the kids who really enjoyed this year over past events. Cohen pits the kids in friendly competition to see who is best locally. Skills from first aid, communication, construction, cooking and navigation are all undertaken. Newly placed alongside that is loads of social time and a relaxed schedule between activities and free time canoeing and a native a night time wide geocache game in the forest had them all going strong.

Then home to unleash herbicide hell on the garden. Now it's feet up beer time while the sun vanishes another weekend all too quickly gone.

Oh and +SwiftKey Keyboard worst update ever. Really crap. Way too much correction going on now.

Today I spent the afternoon photographing some origami (folded paper art) for my neighbour who has started down the path of a new small business of providing Bonbonniere or wedding favours.

These are some of my favourites from the shoot.

As a strong juxtaposition to the rest of the images in this album where the native eucalypt and wattle forests form the main landscape within which the train features periodically here we have 6A at the top of Fielder bank having just crossed Orchard Rd with the rolling open farmlands that were cleared more than 100 years ago for white settlement and farming. There were people living here for much longer than that - the various Wurunjerie tribes were around here. Some still are. I wonder what those people first thought of the train when it rolled in for the first time in the early 1900's.

Another unprotected crossing this one only very rarely sees any traffic as it only goes to three or four houses.

I once heard someone say on the railway that if you see a photograph with just the engine then it's a gunzel (aka railfan) that took the photo, if you can see other parts of the train or only part of the engine then it's a photographer. I like to think of myself as both, so for balance here's the other end as they train rolls down through Wright station.

Last weekend I ran the innaugural "36" walk where people were invited to join together on a peaceful meander around some of the picturesque parts of Melbourne. We've all heard the phrase hit it with a hammer, that'll fix it. Well in a steam engine a small light peen hammer is exactly what you use when there is a steam leak. Gently tapping the body and housing of the leaking unit helps the stuffing reseal and calm the flow of steam. Here driver Alan taps away at the automatic oiler that keeps parts of the locomotive lubricated as he's surrounded by a haze of wet steam.

I reckon there might have been a little drone in the air over the city on Friday night, one with lights. It showed up with its pretty patterns in a few of my shots. Initially I got a bit annoyed, then I thought, it doesn't matter - it's just another dimension of Melbourne at night.

There are good reasons to share circles, but yes, agree with you - the circlegames are about desperation more than anything. Well said Karl.

Think before you add or share a circle.

Don't we all know them, the people who promise you everything and keep nothing. They use terms like "core multiplying", "snowballing", "mega influencers"  and many more superlatives.

How do you feel when you're forced to "plus", "comment" and "reshare" a circle before the circle sharing mafiosi let's you in his/her "great" circle which has only one purpose: followerhunting?
Don't you also get bored after seeing too many animations and nonsense postings?
And as a professional photographer I have an additional problem that's really starting to annoy me: there are too many users who support copyright infringers. It is absolutely not ok. that some "social media experts" or "SEO specialists" misuse photos of others for their advertising or their "getting popular" strategy.

Please think before you add or share a circle.

When I was a newbie I got involved in circle sharing myself although I shared only photographer profiles. After a while I started to realize how much this feature gets abused by certain people and I decided to stop.

Thanks to +Mervik Haums for his free cartoon character.
