The Ice Tunnel
Crystal Ice Cave, South Iceland

Throughout all my travels, the one natural formation that constantly keeps me coming back for more are ice caves. These natural frozen formations have such incredible textures, patterns and color. And the beautiful thing is that every ice cave is different year to year. Have you been to Iceland in the winter?

Week 1 Plus Post

I've been having fun learning more about Blurs and Unsharp Photography this week as part of the new mentorship offered by +Alex Lapidus and sponsored by the +G+ Mentorship Program for Photographers (+Robin Griggs Wood, +Tamara Pruessner, and +Ron Clifford.)

I've always been fascinated by this type of photography and took this opportunity to learn, grow, and expand my creativity. This week we worked on controlled blur and panning. So many of those photos you see out there make it look effortless, but I will tell you it takes a lot of practice to get something that approaches that level of effortlessness. Lots of fun experimenting and trying all kinds of new things that are outside of my comfort zone. Best part was learning more about the capabilities of both my phone and DSLR. Wasn't sure I could do some of those things before and now I'm confident with those features. I just love learning new things!

Hard work, but worth it in the end. Many thanks to Alex, all of the helpers and to all of the other participants for the comments, support, and discussions.

Now I'd better get back to my practicing, there's already new assignment for this week!

A sneak preview of one my photos from last night.. was very cool, I headed out to South Arm and followed my instincts down a dirt track, happened upon 3 other photographers with a Kayak! So we took turns in Kayaking around the bay to stir up the bioluminescence for our photos... I'll do up a proper photo when I get home... around June 3rd

visited Incredible Bagan in Myanmar!!! What an amazing place...as much as this place is incredible..the thing that really touched me the most about this country is definitely the people.. So many of us are spoiled but still find a way to be unhappy or complain about what we don't have. Burmese people barely posses a tiny fraction of what we do but seem to be so much happier. This is one experience that was genuinely good for my soul. Wishing all my Google + friends a great weekend, hope you are all doing great   #Vikingcruises   #Lifewelltravelled

Hamersley Gorge. Is this a different view? Probably not!

My little comment about originality in photography received a lot of supportive comments a few weeks back. However, sometimes when you visit a location, it can be difficult to be original. And even when you try something new, chances are someone else has done it before you.

Such as this 'different' view of Spa Pool at Hamersley Gorge. The front of this amazing rock formation has become very popular in recent years, so when Tony Hewitt and I visited there last week with ten intrepid photographers, I looked for an angle that was 'different'. Well, different for me, but I am sure there are many photographers viewing this newsletter who have taken a similar angle.

Don't get me wrong. If you visit Hamersley Gorge, I think you should photograph the pool from the front. It's like visiting Uluru or the Sydney Opera House. It's a rite of passage for all of us to photograph these icons and to add them to our portfolio.

However, I have been lucky enough to visit Hamersley a couple of times before, so on this occasion, I had the luxury of looking for something that was new for me - and hopefully my treatment of the image will make it distinctively mine.

It has been photographed with a 23mm Rodenstock Digaron lens on an Alpa TC with a Phase One IQ180 medium format back. The raw file was processed in Capture One and the final post-production in Photoshop. The bright colour on the water in the background is natural, just in case you were wondering, as is the colour of the rocks on the right. Most unlike me, isn't it!

If you're interested in joining Tony Hewitt and me on our next trip to New Zealand this June, we have some places left and we are definitely going. Think of it as nearly a week of high-powered photographic instruction, from our capture secrets all the way through to one-on-one post-production instruction in the New Zealand High Country. And unlike Hamersley Gorge, I can guarantee that some of our locations will have been seen by very few photographers before!

But don't take my word for it! There's a great little e-brochure I've created which has all the details - click following link to have a look! http://issuu.com/workingpro/docs/adventuresinnz-2015/1___

"Sandstone Waves"
Lower Antelope Canyon, AZ

One of the most incredible aspects of visiting the American Southwest is the abundance of amazing sandstone slot canyons. These natural formations were created through hundreds of thousands (and sometimes millions) of years of water moving through these areas...slowly...but surely carving away rock to get what you see here today.

This photo was taken with the #LGG4 new pro camera app that both allows you to shoot in manual as well as the RAW image file format.

Lest We Forget

With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children
England mourns for her dead across the sea,
Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit,
Fallen in the cause of the free.

Solemn the drums thrill: Death august and royal
Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres,
There is music in the midst of desolation
And glory that shines upon our tears.

They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eyes, steady and aglow,
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

They mingle not with their laughing comradesagain,

They mingle not with their laughing comrades again,
They sit no more at familiar tables of home,
They have no lot in our labour of the daytime,
They sleep beyond England's foam.

But where our desires and hopes profound,
Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight,
To the innermost heart of their own land they are known
As the stars are known to the night.

As the stars shall be bright when we are dust,
Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain,
As the stars that are starry in the time of our darkness,
To the end, to the end, they remain.

- Laurence Binyon

Something a little abstract this morning with a intentional camera movement photo. Taken in some woods just after a bush fire.
