Miss Utah, Science, and me
http://www.slate.com/blogs/bad_astronomy/2013/06/18/big_tent_science_there_s_room_for_all_of_us.html
A little while ago I was in Utah to give a talk, and happened to get a chance to meet Kara Arnold, the current Miss Utah (from Miss America, not the one from Miss USA who was the target of so much snark yesterday). Although very religious, she is a huge advocate for science in general, and for getting girls interested in it specifically. That dichotomy got me thinking, so I wrote about it.

The 24 hour 32 hour Hangoutathon is Coming
Faced with governmental funding cuts to science education and research, we have decided to go old school with a twist: On June 15-16, we are hosting a telethon using Google Hangout on Air – a Hangout-a-thon – to raise money to support public engagement in science.
Links
- Blog post: http://bit.ly/18U733k
- Schedule of Events: http://bit.ly/15VFNgv
- Google Event Page: http://bit.ly/193HpGV (and) Linked below
The Hangout-a-thon will start on June 15 at noon Eastern (GMT – 5). Over the weekend, we will host numerous guests, ranging from scientists who will do science demos, creatives who can unite science and art/music, and researchers who will discuss citizen science and address science education from the perspective of research and metrics. Each segment will be released after the event as a stand-al... more »

The Trek Continues!
http://www.slate.com/blogs/bad_astronomy/2013/06/07/_star_trek_continues_fan_made_episodes_carry_on_on_the_five_year_mission.html
If you love the original Star Trek TV series, then you should really check out "Star Trek Continues", a fan-made production that literally picks up where TOS left off. With loving detail, they have produced a full-length episode that is for all intents and purposes the first episode of the fourth season. The makeup, lighting, effects, set design... even the return of an old nemesis. It's all there. I'm pretty impressed by this.

Chris Hadfield and two crewmates return to Earth tonight, so to honor this I combed through hundreds of pix Hadfield took of the Earth from space, and picked my favorite 15. It was very, very hard to choose! But these are all very cool, each showing a different side of space exploration.

http://www.slate.com/blogs/bad_astronomy/2013/05/05/louisiana_and_creationism_law_allowing_religion_to_be_taught_in_school_survives.html
Incredibly, it is currently legal to teach creationism in Louisiana public schools. People have tried to repeal this CLEARLY unconstitutional law three times, and all three times this legal travesty has remained on the books. And when you read the shocking comment of one LA State Senator on why he defended it, your jaw will hit the floor at relativistic speeds.

When galaxies collide...
http://www.slate.com/blogs/bad_astronomy/2013/05/02/cosmic_collision_merging_galaxies_create_vast_cloud_of_superhot_gas.html
Two galaxies collided, a train wreck on a colossal scale. The havoc created inside them has triggered a massive wave of star formation that's gone on for 200 million years, pumping up a vast cloud of gas surrounding the pair, heating it to millions of degrees, causing it to glow fiercely in X-rays.
Man, I love writing sentences like that.

A win for reality!
The maker of useless "bomb detecting" magic dowsing rods has been convicted of fraud. These pieces of junk were - and still are - being used by the Iraqi military at checkpoints to look for bombs. They don't work, and in 2009 resulted in the death so hundreds of people.
