Dallas McMillan7,412Circle from the land downunder - Australia's top 200 PlussersWho are Australia's most followed people on Google Plus?I've put together this circle of Australia's top 200 profiles (by follower numbers - not engagement - some aren't particularly active) on Google Plus. It's pretty interesting to see the types of profiles which make the cut. Here is my quick overview:By far the most dominant characteristic of the top 200 are photographers - professional and amateur. The other notable individuals are a couple of cricketers in the top 10, a smattering of celebrity chefs, musicians, writers, artists, models and other celebrities. There are also fair numbers of Google employees, IT workers, social media and marketing types as well as a decent number of scientists and mathematicians. The only politician I noticed was Malcolm Turnbull - the Prime Minister and Leader of the opposition are conspicuous by their absence.I got the list from +CircleCount http://www.circlecount.com/au/profileslist/ and I've made a few tweaks - removing a couple of profiles that were inactive or had moved away from Australia. There were a number of others which probably don't belong as they now work in the USA or elsewhere.  #australia   #australianphotographers   #circleshare  I've notified members of the circle - let me know if you don't want to be listed.2013-08-04 14:24:522009213

Kathryn Crosby19When I returned to G+ for about the third time and tried to actually give it a chance, I found the most frustrating issue was that there are so few active Australians that there are often long dead times while the rest of the world is asleep. Like me, many of the Australians in this circle posted a couple of things in July/August/September, but because no one else seemed to be posting anything they moved away. None the less, having got near enough to 500 Aussies, I figured I should share the circle and add it to the database. Perhaps with a heap of Australian circling going on it will wake things up a bit. I have tried to cull out the wannabe Australians and the completely inactive, but there may have been a few missed out. If I have missed you please feel free to post in the comments and I'll start work on a second Australians circle.2011-11-02 08:55:134993058

Why Google+ is the place for passions

The single biggest controversy about social media, and one that has persisted for two or three years now without resolution, is whether Google+ is a dying wasteland of non-activity, or a hive of conversation and engagement.

It can't be both. So which is it? And why can't this fundamental question be answered?

I believe I have the key to the puzzle, and I'll attempt to solve it once and for all.

Here what the Twitter people and the Facebook people don't understand about the Google+ people:

Need Help requesting Google+ to be recognised  on Aussie Social Media TV Show "NX"

Australian News Channel ABC News 24  has a Social Media news segment called  that continually ignores Google+  when quoting 'trending' topics on the social web. They quote "Whats Trending" on  Instagram, Facebook, Twitter yet no Google+. The closest is a 3 second view of a 'Popular Google Searches Web Page in "tile format" that has text so small you cant read it and is flashed on the screen for just 3 seconds.

Representatives of ABC Australia have told me in the past that Google+ is 'not popular' enough in Australia to be of any importance to their Social Media outreach to audiences.

I would like to get a "Google+ Trending Topic" added to the list of social media sources on the show.

I would like to get a "Google+ Trending Topic" added to the list of social media sources on the show.

To convince the host of the show (Matt Cargill)@mattcargill I need fellow Australian Plussers to send a Tweet to him asking for Google+ Trending Topics to be included on the ABC "Whats Trending List"

Please tweet something like this:

@mattcargill I am an Australian Google+ user and I want to see Google+ Trending Topics added to your show please - thanks! #NX

Thanks fellow Plussers!  ___

The mathematics behind the Droste effect
http://www.josleys.com/article_show.php?id=82

In 1956, M.C. Escher completed a drawing called “Print Gallery”. The drawing depicts a young man looking at a print in a gallery that is deformed almost beyond recognition. There is an enigmatic white area in the center of the image.

In 2003, a group of mathematicians at Leiden University, led by Prof. Hendrik Lenstra succeeded in unraveling the mathematical structure of the image. Once this structure was known, they could ‘complete’ the image by filling in the famous white spot with the help of a computer algorithm.

A summary of their method was published in a paper, and received a lot of acclaim, not only in academic circles, but also in the general press.

+Google+ now has more than 2 BILLION accounts !! In a little over 3 years, 1207 days to be precise, the number of personal profiles and pages has increased at a meteoric growth rate of approximately 1,658,625 new users/pages per day!

I've been calculating the growth rate of G+ for some time now at a website that I myself host http://plus.miernicki.com and if you would like to plug this data into another application, you can access the raw data (as JSON feeds) from http://plus.miernicki.com/plus and http://plus.miernicki.com/minus

To just say +Google+ is just about numbers would definitely be doing it a disservice. In the 3+ years I've been here, I've made tons of friends, shared countless stories/photographs, and had interactions with a very diverse group of people... and to that I say, "Here's to the next 2 Billion users!"

How long until we see pictures from the NASA rovers? I suspect they have to wait for MRO to be placed back in its proper position to allow high speed data transmissions back to earth. MRO is used as a high speed data relay from Mars isnt it?

Comet C/2013 A1 Siding Spring will make a very close flyby of Mars on Oct. 19, 2014. Passing at a distance of only 87,000 miles (by comparison that's little more than 1/3 the distance between Earth and our moon), it will be a near miss of the Red Planet.

Comet Siding Spring appears to streak across the sky like a superhero in this infrared image from NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer, or WISE. The comet, also known as C/2007 Q3, was discovered in 2007 by observers in Australia.

The snowball-like mass of ice and dust spent billions of years orbiting in the deep freeze of the Oort Cloud, a spherical cloud of comets surrounding our solar system. At some point, it got knocked out of this orbit and onto a course that brings it closer to the sun. On October 7, 2009, it passed as close as 1.2 astronomical units from Earth and 2.25 astronomical units from the sun (an astronomical unit is the distance between the sun and Earth).

In this view, longer wavelengths of infrared light are red and shorter wavelengths are blue. The comet appears red because it is more than ten times colder than the surrounding stars, for example, the bright blue star in the foreground. Colder objects give off more of their light at longer wavelengths. An ice cube, for example, pours out a larger fraction of its light at longer infrared wavelengths than a cup of hot tea emits.

A comet like this one can be thought of as a time capsule leftover from the formation of our solar system 4.5 billion years ago. After spending most of its long, lonely life in the darkest, coldest parts of our solar system, it warms up as it approaches the sun. The sunlight causes it to shed ices and dust in a long tail that trails behind it.
Comet Siding Spring, having experienced this "spring" awakening, is glowing in infrared light that WISE can see. Once it moves too far from the sun's warmth and light, it will disappear from view for the foreseeable future.

Astronomers used these measurements to learn about the comet's size, composition, reflectivity, and the size and makeup of the dust particles in its coma (the hazy cloud surrounding its nucleus) and its tail. WISE data on this and other comets will help unlock clues that lay within these icy time capsules, teaching us about our solar system's evolution.

In this image, 3.4-micron light is colored blue; 4.6-micron light is green; 12-micron light is orange; and 22-micron light is red. It was taken on Jan. 10, 2010.

Today’s 30-second #AndroidDev #Protip from +Ankur Kotwal is about lockscreen media controls on Android L.

Android L is bringing notifications to the lockscreen [0]. Your app can now provide media playback control from the lockscreen through a notification. This gives your app more control over the presentation of media buttons and playback information, while providing  a consistent experience for users across the lockscreen and unlocked device.

Along with this change, lockscreens on Android L no longer show media controls based on RemoteControlClient. To ensure that users retain access to media controls on the lockscreen, we strongly recommended that media apps update with the following changes for Android L as soon as possible.

To provide a consistent user experience for media controls in notifications, Android L introduces the Notification.MediaStyle template. On previous versions of Android, media apps had to use custom RemoteViews to present playback status and controls as a notification - on Android L, MediaStyle provides the controls for you. It converts up to 6 actions added with Notification.Builder.addAction() into clickable icons—perfect for play/pause, seek, shuffle, favorites, etc—and even allows you to show one or two of those buttons in the compact (un-expanded) form of the notification.

To migrate to Android L’s media notifications, the following steps are recommended:
1. Call setVisibility(Notification.VISIBILITY_PUBLIC) to mark your media notification as safe to reveal on the lockscreen, even when it is secured with a PIN/pattern/password. This is the bare minimum you should do.
2. Update your notification to use MediaStyle to use media features on L such as compact actions.

The sample code below shows how to create a simple media style notification and have its contents revealed on the lockscreen:
  Notification notification = new Notification.Builder(context)
// show controls on lockscreen even when user hides sensitive content.
    .setVisibility(Notification.VISIBILITY_PUBLIC)
    .setSmallIcon(R.drawable.ic_stat_player)
// Add media control buttons that invoke intents in your media service
    .addAction(R.drawable.ic_prev, "Previous", prevPendingIntent) // #0
    .addAction(R.drawable.ic_pause, "Pause", pausePendingIntent)  // #1
    .addAction(R.drawable.ic_next, "Next", nextPendingIntent)     // #2
// Apply the media style template
    .setStyle(new Notification.MediaStyle()
      .setShowActionsInCompactView(1 /* #1: pause button */)
      .setMediaSession(
        myRemoteControlClient.getMediaSession().getSessionToken()))
    .setContentTitle("Wonderful music")
    .setContentText("My Awesome Band")
    .setLargeIcon(albumArtBitmap)
    .build();

Start updating playback controls of your media app to take advantage of the new and consistent media control capability in Android L. Check out https://developer.android.com/preview/api-overview.html for more detail.

New Android ads show off Nexus 6 and more!

These ads were shown tonight while +Cristian Colocho was watching The Walking Dead online. They show the massive Nexus 6 along with a slightly tweaked default ringtone. Besides the Nexus, Google seems to be touting a new slogan for Android. These ads seem to depict that even though all these phones exist from different manufacturers and all look different, they're all still Android. With these ads showing up, Android L and the next round of Nexus devices have to be right around the corner.

X2go is a great application for remotely accessing your Linux computer from a Windows, Linux, or Mac PC. What makes this unique for Linux is that you are able to connect to your computer at the login screen.  Perhaps you are booting into a headless system and don't want a GUI running all the time. With X2Go you are able to select your desktop environment before connecting.  For the session it will launch that GUI and then exit it upon logout.

Google has released a new emulator image for devs to test with, the 64-bit Android L developer preview is now ready for download. This means very little to most of us right now, but rest assured, it means great things are coming. What do you say, is 64-bit on mobile really going to be a big deal?

Starting today, you can use polls on Google+ to settle the burning issues of our generation...or at least find out what your friends are thinking.

Polls make it easy to get opinions from your friends and followers on the things you’re curious about. You can create polls with up to five choices and use photos to make them beautiful and engaging. New York City

My New York City Photography book just released in Europe this past week and people have been sending me photos on other social networks of the book and it’s so surreal.

Every time I see a photo of the book, it takes me a second or two to realize that it’s really my book! I see the cover, I think to myself: “That looks like one of my photographs” and then it hits me. It’s quite amusing actually!

I wanted to take some time to thank everyone. It’s been quite a crazy journey so far and in some ways it is just the beginning. It’s nice to meet so many truly great people along the way who are inspiring in their own way.

Sometimes text doesn’t convey sincerity online but I am sincere when I say that I am super grateful for everyone’s encouragement, inspiring words and messages.

In other news, I am heading to San Francisco for the rest of the week with a group of highly talented bloggers and photographers. We will be photographing the city (my first time visiting!), meeting thePinterest team at their headquarters, meeting up with the AirBNB team at their headquarters, as well as hanging out with some of the lovely people at Southwest Airlines. Fun, fun!

Thank you all again for being so awesome and I just may post some San Francisco photography while I am exploring. :)

Tiles are insulating blocks placed around the outside of the spacecraft to help protect it from the immense amounts of heat experienced during reentry into Earth’s atmosphere. Orion will have about 1,300 tiles. Unlike the space shuttles, Orion will feature a solid, ablative heat shield below the spacecraft, and thermal protection tiles on the backshell of the spacecraft that are more standard in size and shape, making them easier to manufacture.
