Google+ Photos3,380,973DescriptionThe path to getting the shot is filled with blunders, gaffes and, eventually, growth. Despite wanting to believe that every shot since Day 1 has been a winner, the journeys of these photographers are filled with photos suffering from every mistake in the book. In this episode of Google+ Photos Chat, our panel will share their stories and imagery taken during these 'formative years' and the lessons learned that helped make them the photographers they are today.PanelBrian Matiash - HostLaurie Rubin - ModeratorAndy Biggs - GuestAravind Krishnaswamy - Google+ Photos Engineer and photographerDate and TimeWed, 4/17 4PM PSTEpisode 2: Google+ Photos Chat Series (Growing To Get The Shot)2013-04-18 01:00:00217G+
Jeff Sullivan2,025,483+Lori Hibbett and I and I will try to be shooting on the rocks by around 6:30 to capture golden hour light. Sunset is at 7:18, so the best sky color will be from then until 7:40 or so. Then we'll have some "blue hour" twilight for another 20-30 minutes, the light painting can start by 8, and stars will be gradually strengthening from then through 8:30 for night shots. If we're getting some good light and reflections off the beach making light orbs and so on, we can shoot to 9 or whenever we get thirsty. No problem if you're late given work, school and weekday traffic, we should be able to stay entertained shooting in the changing light for at least 2-2.5 hours.  We'll go to a bar or restaurant for another hour or two after that. This free social event is open to all; you're welcome to bring your photographer friends (on Flickr, Meetup, 500px, from your local photography club, etc.) We're looking forward to seeing those of you we've met out shooting in recent years, and meeting those of you we haven't shot with yet! We'd like to explore the area known as Hospitals Reef or Draper Villas, the rocks adjacent to Coast Boulevard Park 0.7 miles south of La Jolla Cove (see map).  We'll also shoot El Matador State Beach in Malibu April 11 and Little Corona Beach April 14.Sunset Photowalk La Jolla Monday April 152013-04-15 18:30:0030G+

Of course there will be mitigating factors...Because of the way that Google no longer presents every person who adds me to their circles to me it is quite possible that I have missed some pretty good photographers.  If I am following you, chances are that you are already in one of these circles or in my "check later" circle.  If you think you have been missed, tag a comment on one of these posts and I will check your profile out for inclusion.  Guidelines for inclusion can be found at:   https://plus.google.com/u/0/103752943025677384806/about#circleshare #circlesharing #circleoftheday   #sharedcircles   #sharedcircle #sharedpubliccircles   #fullcircleshare #addmetoyourcircles #pixelworld   #pixelworldcircle #circleoftheday #bestsharedcircle   #thebestcirclesongoogle #thebestcircle             #handpickedcircles             Note: the hash tag #handpickedcircles  should only be used to refer to these circles and other circles created by +2014-07-11 12:13:05187213CC G+

So, this circle may represent a list of people working on the edge between photography and art. I like that experimental edge :-)2014-05-22 06:00:41400016CC G+

The Golden Triangle: La Jolla, San Diego

“Clouds come floating into my life, no longer to carry rain or usher storm, but to add color to my sunset sky."
~ Rabindranath Tagore, Stray Birds

In my view every day is #EarthDay  . We are responsible for safeguarding our natural world, for it has given us so much. It's very easy to take things for granted, only to find that the future generations don't have anything left to enjoy. Preserve, Protect and Care for our Natural world.

I took this image when +Jennifer Luzio came to visit San Diego. +Alexander S. Kunz , Jen and I roamed around a really low tide La Jolla shoreline. The light past sunset wasn't all that great, but there was a short while when the sun burst between the clouds.

Solitary Night: Scripps Pier, La Jolla

"A Beacon of hope always shines somewhere, somehow, so that you may find it and end your darkness"

This is will be perhaps my last image for a month as I will be traveling until the end of July. Will miss posting and interacting with you all, but I hope to be back soon!

How was this shot taken:
I took this image late at night. My initial idea was to try to attempt star trails at this venue, but the clouds made that possibility obscure. I ended doing an LE of the scene, and thought that this would be something original not often done here. The stars were beautiful and the clouds were moving fast. I wanted to retain some texture so I used a longish shutter speed, but very short in terms of conventional LE.

It was very difficult to expose and capture this image with the constant spray of water on my camera and lens, and in addition to that, I had to use a telephoto lens at an annoyingly vertical angle. Stabilizing the setup, wiping the lens, and pressing the shutter was all I did for a good 45 minutes.

How was this shot processed:
Single RAW file processed twice to bring out details in the water and the foliage. An additional exposure for dynamic range. Liberal use of curves and levels for tonal adjustments.

How was this shot taken:
I used a wide angle with a polarizer to enhance the greens. Apart from that, this is a standard long exposure shot. The polarizer doubles up as a 2 stop ND filter, so you get those silky lines of water.

How was this shot processed:
Single RAW file put through the paces in Camera RAW, and then some contrast and tonal adjustments in CS6.

Pot of Gold: Columbia River Gorge, Oregon

"The end of the trail often has a pot of gold lying in wait for the true seeker"

Another gem from Oregon's unlimited greenery. This is a different take on one of the popular falls in the gorge. I figured that since this is really overshot, I could try to do something a little different.

How was this shot taken:
I literally got rained on for this shot. The mist and spray from the falls was really intense that I had to cover my camera and wipe the lens every 2 minutes. It was a fun experience being the only one in the area, and taking in the sounds of the forest.

How was this shot processed:
Single exposure, processed in Camera RAW, and finished off with some creative adjustments in Photoshop.

I have a new video tutorial on the Photo Cascadia blog: Deep Forest Soft Light Glow Techniques . I share two of my favorite ways to bring out that awesome ambient-light glow we see in deep forest settings but is so hard to photograph the way it looks. How was this shot taken:
It took a lot of planning to figure out when the Milky way would be over the arch. It was a small window of time, and when we got there, the whole sky was blocked out by clouds. The weather forecast had said clear skies, but nature never gives you a moment's rest. Praying earnestly that the clouds would clear up, we waited for nearly 2 hours, setting up my composition, testing light painting strength in the hope that something would give. Lo and behold, 2 hours later, the clouds parted revealing the milky way in all its glory.

I had to work fast, since this would be a panoramic view, and I took about 14 vertical shots stitched horizontally. The challenge here was that the light painting had to be consistent across individual frames, and the exposure time had to be as little as possible to ensure a proper stitch of the stars. Garry masterfully took care of the former :). Once I had the shots in the bag, I thanked the heavens for the stroke of luck I had. You can see some of the clouds on the right side of the frame.

How was this shot processed:
In post, it took a lot of work to warp, and stitch the frames together, and then blend in some detail for dynamic range. I thoroughly enjoyed working on this image.I took up photography 3 years back, and I never could have imagined that one day, I'd be able to pull something like this off. That's why I call this image "The Time Machine"

Maid in the Mist: Oregon

"As she glows in the misty warmth of the morning sun, spring comes alive in all her splendor!"

On a beautiful overcast morning, I encountered some rare conditions in the gorge. There was a brief moment when sunlight lit up foliage shrouded in mist. You can see the patch of light green formed in the background due to the mist acting like a giant soft box. Exposing for this image was difficult, and I took several exposures to get as much detail and DOF as possible. Within 10 minutes, the light was gone and the scene was its gloomy self again.

How was this shot taken:
I was knee deep in slippery water and fell twice while trying to reach a spot to compose an image. I used a circular polarizer to cut the glare off the rocks, and also saturate the greens. I took multiple exposures for dynamic range and depth of field.

Yin Yang II: Mesquite Dunes, Death Valley

"Balance is often just two opposing forces pulling each other in harmony"

Given a choice between giant vistas and small intimate patterns, I'd almost always pick the latter. Finding a composition that represents their beauty though is often quite a challenge. Another one of my dune images from my first Death Valley trip.

How was this shot taken:
I was looking for contrast, not just in the sense of light and shadows, but also semantically. These beautiful windswept dunes just had tons of it. I decided to use a square crop to show balance in the frame, and also to give each half equal weight.

How was this shot:
Basic RAW adjustments, and then a dose of Silver Efex. I didn't have to spend more than 10 minutes on this :)

Islands in the Sky: La Jolla, San Diego

"The separation between the realms of the earth often lies in our imagination!"

Many times we miss the forest for the trees. While trying to capture grand vistas, we miss smaller gems that are hidden right in front of our eyes. This was one such gem that I found while shooting by the coast.

How was this shot taken:
Isolating the subject is all I had to do here. These rocks were bathed in warm sunlight, and the clouds were reflecting in the low tide surrounding them. I took many shots, but this is the one that I really liked!

How was this shot processed:
I processed the same RAW file twice in Camera RAW and brought out as much detail as possible. This image was about 5 sliders worth of work :)

How was this shot processed:
I used only 2 exposures for this, one for the sky, and one for the foreground. I blended these exposures using luminosity masks. All tonal and color adjustments were done using curves, levels and dodge and burn tools.

NEW TUTORIAL/BEHIND THE SCENES

Hey Guys,

I posted this originally sometime yesterday afternoon, but I guess a lot of people didn't get what this was about.

Being inspired by the kindness of my beloved mentees, I've decided to release a new tutorial for one of my images. +Robin Griggs Wood also did a tutorial on some of her images some time back, and I was quite intrigued at how much I picked up from it. So I figured I could attempt to make myself useful and do something similar for the landscape community and create a nice tutorial for you all.

The contents of the tutorial are entirely dependent on you!

Here's what I'd like you to do :

1) Pick 1 of the images in the album below

2) Ask me any questions related to how it was taken, processed etc.

3) The image that receives the most number of questions/votes will be chosenf... more »

Pick any one of the shots below in the album, that'd you'd want to know more about. Leave a comment below, and also a question or two that you'd like to get answered about the shot.

I'll publish a small tutorial for the shot that receives the most votes/comments.

Timescapes II : The Pool of Galene La Jolla, San Diego

"There is one spectacle grander than the sea, that is the sky; there is one spectacle grander than the sky, that is the interior of the soul."

The second image from my new series, Timescapes. The basic idea behind this series is to show the passage of time in a single shot. More like an entire time-lapse sequence compressed into one shot. Hope you folks like it.

Please view this on Black, trust me it looks much more awesome

How was this shot taken:
Given the first of the series was a stormy sea, I picked a calmer ocean for the next image. Galene is the goddess of calm seas. Hence the title. The tide flowed through the curved channel and re-entered the ocean. It was a serene span of time and the way it could be best conveyed was through a long exposure. Once the stars... more »

The tide flowed through the curved channel and re-entered the ocean. It was a serene span of time and the way it could be best conveyed was through a long exposure. Once the stars came up, I felt I had enough content to show the scene as I saw it in my mind's eye.

How was this shot processed:
Balancing the light was the biggest challenge here. I didn't want to go too bright or too dark. I used luminosity masks, dodging and burning to achieve this look. Hope it appeals to you folks :)

Misty Metlako: Columbia River Gorge, Oregon

"Every drop of water merges with the ocean through one path or another. So to, must we merge with our source."

I must say walking into the gorge in spring is just like walking into the movie set of Jurassic Park! There were lush greens everywhere and the water was just pounding through the forest.

How was this shot taken:
While hiking through the trail, I took the customary detour to see Metlako from the viewpoint. However, the foliage was so thick that I couldn't get a clear shot of the falls without jumping the fence. I used a telephoto lens to zoom into the subject and used a polarizer to bring out the lush greens and cut off glare.

It's been such a long time since I worked on a B&W LE image that my mentor +Joel Tjintjelaar may have forgotten me as a student of his :D. Seeing +Simos Xenakis produce so many awesome LEs since, I decided I should on the very least produce one in a year! I went for the dark moody effect here simply to emphasize the god beam on the hikers, and used the SGM technique that Joel pioneered to get the tones I wanted.

I took 3 exposures, one for the foreground, one for the sky, and one for the sunstar. The 16-35 lens from Canon produces one of the best sunstars I've ever seen! After that, it was the careful blending of the three for this final image.

Born of the Sand Death Valley

"To see a world in a grain of sand and heaven in a wild flower Hold infinity in the palms of your hand and eternity in an hour."

I took this one a couple of years back in the mesquite dunes. I was drawn by the golden light hitting the peaks and hiked up a vantage point to get a composition.

How was this shot taken:
These dunes were quite far off, so I used a telephoto lens to compress the scene. Who said you can't use telephotos for landscape work? :)

How was this shot processed:
Double RAW processing in the Camera RAW, followed by some curves and levels adjustments using luminosity selections.

One of Gratitude and Love

They say surprises can make your heart skip a beat. I think mine just skipped an entire day's worth! I'm so overwhelmed with emotion thanks to the wonderful and amazing people I get to call the #SLPTeam

I didn't have the slightest clue that you guys were working on this, neither did I even think I was worth any of this. What an incredibly beautiful gift!!

I absolutely love adore this book guys. Every single page took me down memory lane, to each week, where you all would come up with these incredible images. I really had tears in my eyes when I first opened up the package.

Thanks for putting up with my newbieness over the 12 week program, thanks for making sure that I communicated my ideas clearly. Thank you for your patience, understanding, and your infectious enthusiasm that really kept me going.... more »

Magical Elowah: Oregon

"A strong man and a waterfall always channel their own path"

If the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy could have been shot in any place other than New Zealand, I'm pretty sure Oregon would have been the first choice. The Columbia River Gorge is so incredibly beautiful with lush greenery and an infinite amount of waterfalls in all shapes and sizes. One of my favorites during my first visit here was the amazing Elowah falls. The falls is so huge that if you get close to it, you'll be soaked with spray. The trail is a windy fun hike starting from the highway, and soon, the sounds you hear change from buzzing cars to the chirping sounds of the forest. Near the end of the trail, you'll hear the falls thundering down, much like hearing an orchestra in an amphitheater. I tell you, I will visit this place again and again and again...... more »

The trail is a windy fun hike starting from the highway, and soon, the sounds you hear change from buzzing cars to the chirping sounds of the forest. Near the end of the trail, you'll hear the falls thundering down, much like hearing an orchestra in an amphitheater. I tell you, I will visit this place again and again and again...

How was this shot taken:
There is a bridge in front of the falls that lets you walk across, but I found that to be a distracting element in a natural landscape. Being my typical crazy self, I jumped head first into the bushes, tripod and camera dangerously above me. I got into the water and thought this should be a no brainer. The more I waded in, the deeper the water got. Eventually, thigh deep in water, and surrounded by the friendly neighborhood mosquitos, I set up shop to take this shot. I had to take multiple exposures here, both for Depth of Field for which I used various focal points, and also for dynamic range. The sun was casting a harsh plane of light on the giant rock face near the falls. I had to wait for the sun to hide behind the clouds to capture that part of the image. My routine was quite simple. Focus, wipe lens, click, wipe lens, get soaked, wipe lens, click, etc etc. This was truly a rewarding hike, for I felt like I was in a zen state of mind in this beautiful temple of water.

How was this shot processed:
This is my first attempt at trying Depth of Field blending. Given that I had to use a long shutter speed for the water, the foliage appeared blurry since the wind decided that it would make the flowers dance. I had to take a separate exposure with a fast shutter speed for the foliage. Then using a combination of different focal points, I had to pain stakingly align and blend them for a proper DOF. This being said, each focal point had two exposures, which I blended for dynamic range prior to doing the DOF blend. Then I processed the image using the standard curves, and other adjustment layers. Phew.. I'm exhausted. Need a coffee...

Eye of the Sun Arches National Park, Utah

"What are men to rocks and mountains?"

I took this one back last during probably the worst time to visit the desert, early July. The heat was so intense that we could only go out early in the morning or late in the evening. The light also eluded us for the duration of our stay. However, it was a great chance for us to scout the place for the next visit. Note to self : You want Desserts not Deserts in summer.

How was this shot taken:
My friend and I went up to the windows section to catch the first light of the sun on the windows and turret. While everything looked very promising and clear, just as the sun came up, along came some friendly clouds and blocked it off. Just perfect right? That's nature for you. However, I did manage to get a brief moment during which it illuminated the turret. I added a person in the composition to show the scale of these magnificent formations. The picture doesn't do justice at all!

How was this shot processed:
First, I had to clone stamp out around a 1000 people from the shot. I took so many exposures with people moving all over that I lost count. That was the hardest processing step. For the rest of the image, I had to tease out whatever color was there.

P.S: This place is freakin crowded, even at 6am!!

Timescapes I : The Martian Warship La Jolla, San Diego

"We travel on a time machine but once, and one way only."

The first image from my new series, Timescapes. The basic idea behind this series is to show the passage of time in a single shot. More like an entire time-lapse sequence compressed into one shot. Hope you folks like it.

Please view this on Black, trust me it looks much more awesome

How was this shot taken:
This was one of my pre-scouted locations. In fact, I visited this place a couple of days in advance when +Maximilian Laue and +Larry Nienkark  visited San Diego, and also met +Lisa Co  . However, sunset was a bust, but I found this interesting rock and decided to revisit it under better conditions. A couple of days later, it was the same story. Sunset was a bust, and I instead waited for twilight to set in. I captured two exposures, one for the foreground rock and water, and one for the sky with the stars. Then it was a case of careful blending.

How was this shot processed:
Balancing the light was the biggest challenge here. I didn't want to go too bright or too dark. I used luminosity masks, dodging and burning to achieve this look. Hope it appeals to you folks :)

The Goblet of Fire Page, Arizona

"The most tangible of all visible mysteries - fire."

Another one from the archives, this time 2012. Many things happened during this trip during which my camera setup fell into sand and stopped working before recovering to capture this sunset.

How was this shot taken:
This is perhaps the scariest drop I've photographed. I was right at the ledge, and often I was just hugging the ground while my camera was taking the shot ;)
I used a Singh Ray reverse ND grad to even the exposures, and a nice byproduct of that is that the filter leaves a red cast, which sort of added to the mood ;)

How was this shot processed:
I stuck with the cast, and didn't remove it intentionally. Other than that, this needed the removal of 35 dust spots due to the prior accident. I also add somec... more »

A Zabriskie Sunrise: Death Valley National Park

"Our knowledge is a receding mirage in an expanding desert of ignorance."

I remember reading some famous Ansel Adams quote which said "When you're done taking a picture, turn around 180 degrees", but perhaps in more refined language than what has been produced here.

Not being one to dismiss his words, I did just that. After The first rays of the sun hit the peaks at Zabriskie point, I turned around 180 to find the sun making everything glow in its wake :)

I had my tripod planted down firmly on a sloping cliff. Sounds hilarious right? But that's the only real estate I had since there were a bazillion gazillion trillion photographers to the left, right, top, bottom and wherever else you could possibly imagine. I knew that bracketing was a must here, so I took 5 exposures, of which I used only 3 in the end. But, as they say, better safe than sorry ;)

How was this shot processed:
I blended 3 exposures using luminosity masks, and then worked some curves magic for tonal balance and contrast :)
