Jeff Sullivan2,007,960+Lori Hibbett and I and I will try to be shooting on the rocks by around 6:30 to capture golden hour light. Sunset is at 7:18, so the best sky color will be from then until 7:40 or so. Then we'll have some "blue hour" twilight for another 20-30 minutes, the light painting can start by 8, and stars will be gradually strengthening from then through 8:30 for night shots. If we're getting some good light and reflections off the beach making light orbs and so on, we can shoot to 9 or whenever we get thirsty. No problem if you're late given work, school and weekday traffic, we should be able to stay entertained shooting in the changing light for at least 2-2.5 hours.  We'll go to a bar or restaurant for another hour or two after that. This free social event is open to all; you're welcome to bring your photographer friends (on Flickr, Meetup, 500px, from your local photography club, etc.) We're looking forward to seeing those of you we've met out shooting in recent years, and meeting those of you we haven't shot with yet! We'd like to explore the area known as Hospitals Reef or Draper Villas, the rocks adjacent to Coast Boulevard Park 0.7 miles south of La Jolla Cove (see map).  We'll also shoot El Matador State Beach in Malibu April 11 and Little Corona Beach April 14.Sunset Photowalk La Jolla Monday April 152013-04-15 18:30:0030

Brian Matiash1,492,352I recently announced that my brand new +SmugMug portfolio site went live (http://portfolio.brianmatiash.com) and that prints are now available for sale! We had so much fun with the announce that I wanted to continue the good times today. With Valentine's Day in full swing, what better way is there to show yourself how much you love YOU than by winning a 1 YEAR Membership with SmugMug? :) Before we get to the contest details, I want to share a crazy deal that any _new customer_ can take advantage of - SmugMug has been extremely generous and is letting me offer a *25% discount* off of *any* of their four tiered membership packages. To get in on this deal, just use the coupon code *BMASH* when you set up your new account. That is a ridiculously good deal and like all good deals, it expires on _Feb 23, 2013 at the stroke of 11:59PM Pacific/US._ Now onto the contest details - which are very straightforward. I want to you to share your *one, single* image that you think would benefit most from having its own SmugMug Gallery. Just share your image right here in this event and tag it with #SmugMash . *Now, creativity and strength of vision count here!* If you want to share a little ditty about what makes this image so important to you and why you'd want to share it on your own SmugMug gallery, be sure to include that. The contest will run for one week, ending next *Thursday, February 21st at 11:59AM Pacific/US time*. There will be a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winner. The first place winner will receive a complimentary 1 year SmugMug *Business* membership. The second place winner will receive a complimentary 1 year SmugMug *Portfolio* membership. Finally, the third place winner will receive a complimentary 1 year SmugMug *Power* membership. If you're already an existing SmugMug member (good for you!) and you win, you will be upgraded to the respective tier that you placed in or if you placed in the tier that you are currently a member of, SmugMug will extend your account by 1 year. Please tag your comments and/or posts with #SmugMash  to make aggregating the entries easier! So who will be judging this contest? Aside from me, I am so excited to have three amazing SmugMug friends helping out. First, we have _the_ go-to person for all of SmugMug's friends, the lovely and insanely sweet +Katherine Cheng. Next up is SmugMug's social butterfly, loyal father of Rocky the Dog, and the harvester of  #Bonocorns far and wide, +Michael Bonocore. Finally, the co-founder of SmugMug, crazy lover of hanging gigantic prints of jaw-dropping images, and the generally huggable +Chris MacAskill.  One more thing - if you're a new customer who takes advantage of the 25% discount code ( *BMASH* ) today AND ends up winning one of the prizes, SmugMug will automatically tack on another year to your new account. Pretty, pretty, pretty sweet if you ask me. So that's that. I hope you all have fun with this contest. We can't wait to see the amazing work that you guys 'n gals posWin some LOVE! Well… some SmugMug LOVE!2013-02-15 00:00:00131

Dragonfly: Torrey Pines, San Diego

"Some say the world will end by fire, some say that it will end by ice"

I just returned from a weekend trip to the Grand Canyon, and it's safe to say that I got skunked by the weather on all the days I was there. Cloudless sunsets and sunrises, and not much snow in the canyon. Aah well, it helps to think that I did luck out locally one evening here in San Diego. The original plan was to hike up and catch a sunset from the top of the trail, but given that we started late, we decided to see it from the coastline at the base of the trail. In the end, it was a wise decision because the sky just exploded for a good 20 minutes. It kept getting more and more intense over time, and at one point, I wasn't even sure my camera could catch the light properly.

"Long, blue, spiky-edged shadows crept out across the snow-fields, while a rosy glow, at first scarce discernible, gradually deepened and suffused every mountain-top, flushing the glaciers and the harsh crags above them. This was the alpenglow, to me the most impressive of all the terrestrial manifestations of God. At the touch of this divine light, the mountains seemed to kindle to a rapt, religious consciousness, and stood hushed like devout worshippers waiting to be blessed."

I've been working on this image for a very long time, not just processing it, but also planning a shoot when I could catch these flowers under the twilight sky. These flowers bloom once a year, and if you miss that window, you're going to have to wait for the next year until you get a chance to photograph them.

The typical shoot of this scene is to catch sunset light with these flowers in the foreground. However, I wanted to try a different idea, and waited to shoot these flowers under the stars. On the day I went to shoot these flowers, the sky was clear with absolutely no clouds which made it ideal to catch some twilight light, and the first stars in the sky. This is a blend of 4 shots (3 focus stack + 1 for night sky). It was a challenge to shoot with the wind blowing at regular intervals. The second challenge was to blend these images together with the varying light. I shot the focus stack set just after sunset, and then shot another frame one hour after to get the night sky.

It took a lot of time to pull all the images together and blend them. Most of the processing was done in Camera RAW, but I used photoshop to bring out details in the flowers and the sky.

I took this image at the famous Hawaii Volcanoes National Park in the Big Island of Hawaii. Safe to say that the Big Island is perhaps the most incredible and diverse places that I have ever visited. The highlight of the island is of course is this incredible volcano. The Halema'uma'u crater is seriously huge. This image doesn't even come close to conveying the scale of this humungous formation. During the day, what most people see is just a white wisp of smoke. However, once the sun goes down, the lava and flames from inside the crater turn the plume's color into vivid hues of red and orange.

Here, I must thank two amazing photographers and friends, +Bruce Omori and +Tom Kualii, who guided me to some incredible spots. They are daredevils, and it's no surprise that they have THE most diverse lava and volcano portfolio you can ever find. If you make a trip to the Big Island, be sure to hit them up at their website, http://www.extremeexposure.com

Bruce and Tom are two of the nicest people I've ever met, and I'm very grateful for their friendship.

Making of the Image:
This shot was taken under a full moon, so any plans of shooting the Milky Way over the crater were out the window. The moonlight evenly lit the scene, which allowed me to use a lower ISO than I would have needed for this shot. Bruce and Tom suggested that I bracket this shot and they weren't kidding. The dynamic range in the scene was off the charts. This is a stitch of 5 horizontal shots, each of which were blended for dynamic range (4 exposures per shot). The plume was extremely difficult to shoot as it was almost always blown out (pun unintended). The stitch was further complicated by the moving plume. In the end, I pulled it all together after quite some work in photoshop. These conditions lasted for about 10 minutes before the sky fogged up completely and made it impossible to shoot.

This truly was such a memorable evening to shoot, and one that I won't forget for a long time.

Panther's Fury: Columbia Gorge

"The clearest way into the Universe is through a forest wilderness."
~John Muir

I just got back from one of the most epic trips of my life. Oregon and Washington are perhaps the most amazing places for landscape photographers, and I count myself lucky to have got the opportunity to see some of their best locations. I also got the opportunity to shoot and learn from a photographer who I've for long admired, Marc Adamus. It was amazing to learn from Marc, to see his vision in action from start to finish. The man was born with a camera in hand I tell ya!

Taking this shot involved getting into knee deep water which was freezing cold. Two seconds in, I lost sensation in my feet. It also took a lot of lens wiping to remove spray from the front. While taking the shot, sunlight began to hit the upper falls and created a golden glow which really enhanced the shot.

Most of the processing for this shot was done in Camera RAW. Some selective adjustments were done in Photoshop to bring out details in the image.

Temple of Light
Final:

After some more work, I present to you all the final version of "Temple Of Light".

Compared to the previous weeks, the final version has a lot more of dodging and burning. I emphasized the light on the canyon by dodging it while burning the neighboring areas to create contrast and presence. I took care to ensure that the shadows didn't get clipped, yet have a darker moody look to them. Perhaps the biggest difference here is the addition of some micro contrast/clarity to bring out the shape and texture of the rocks.

You guys can check out the final version of this image in the link below :

I shot this at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon at sunset. The final few moments of sunset were simply breathtaking. The last light lingered on some of the canyon walls leaving most of the others in shadow. I tried to isolate this using a telephoto lens.

How was this shot processed:
Tons of dodging and burning! That's what helped achieve this final image :) For more details, check out the collection.

Temple of Light:
Week 2:

Color and Contrast Adjustments

Last week, I posted the RAW file with some basic adjustments from Camera RAW. This week, I present to you a version which has some color and contrast adjustments added in. Mainly, these are done to produce separation between the foreground and background peak, both of which are in the light. Additionally, I've also tweaked the colors and brightness of the shadows to bring out more detail, and to produce emphasis on the edges where light and shadow meet.

Any questions? Comment below.

Temple of Light:
Week 1:

The Basic RAW file

I shot this image in the Grand Canyon during sunset. One of the most amazing phenomenons I got to see was how the fading light intensified the colors on the red rock surfaces of the canyon. This image is an homage to that. As you can see, the basic RAW file shows how the image looked straight out of the camera. I focused on isolating a lit rock face against a neighborhood of rocks in the shade. The goal of processing will be to enhance this difference, and show the beauty of the lingering light.

A New Collection, A new Gift:

Hi there folks. Life has got in the way of my regular posting and image processing. Here is my way to combat that.

Each week, I will post the an image that I'm working on, that is in progress and will share how I am realizing my vision of that shot. There may be large tweaks, or there may be small tweaks which are quite subtle. Either way, at the end, you will see the evolution of how a RAW file got to the finished image that I post to my stream.

Folks, is Lightroom 6 worth the upgrade? Is it sufficiently faster than Lightroom 5? How consistent is the panorama feature at stitching images and how does it handle different stitches (vertical and horizontal)

Would really appreciate your feedback before diving in to upgrade!

"There is no easy walk to freedom anywhere, and many of us will have to pass through the valley of the shadow of death again and again before we reach the mountaintop of our desires."

What is the real color of these flats? Perhaps some of the most incredible formations I've ever seen! During sunset, the skies had no clouds, but there was a short period where the sky burnt red and orange. This cast light on the flats illuminating them with a red tint.

Looking back, there are many things I would change about this image, but aah well, that's for another trip!

Here's an image from my Eastern Sierras trip last year. I went to Convict Lake to catch the sunrise on a cool, crisp morning. With the moon shining bright, prior to the sunrise, I caught some nice Alpenglow on the mountain. The lone cloud in the sky soon drifted away leaving me with the cloudless sunrise. However, I thought I'd toss this one here to see what you guys think.

How was this shot taken:
A Lot of jiggling was involved. It was pretty cold, and I didn't have the best jacket on. There were a lot of people on either side of me so I'm pretty sure I passed on some of the jiggling to them as well. In any case, I made two exposures, one to catch the stars at a higher ISO and one to get the landscape in a noise free low ISO version.

How was this shot processed:
A lot of work was done to blend the two exposures together for not only were they at different exposure values, they were also covering different fields of view. I also used dodging and burning to get the look and feel I wanted for this image.

How was this shot taken:
Step 1 : Get soaked without warning by a rogue wave and commence the cold cha cha jiggle
Step 2 : Fumble with your tripod trying hard to pull out the legs for a stable base
Step 3 : Shoot as many frames as you can before the light goes away.
Step 4: Rinse and Repeat

In truth, I came away with quite a few keepers this evening, and not all  of them involved getting reflections from the sand. I guess I was lucky  to be in the right place at the right time. :)

How was this shot processed:
This is a single exposure, and I'm pretty amazed at how much detail I'm able to recover with the 5D III. Most of the RAW adjustments were done in Lightroom, and I used Photoshop for targeted adjustments to dodge and burn areas, as well as add in some contrast.

Competition for Adobe?

I came across this article about a new photo editing software called Affinity Photo which seems to do a whole bunch of stuff that Photoshop does, only faster!

While it is still in beta, I can't wait to see what it can do to my workflow. Downloads are available for Mac users.

Did any of you use it yet? Thoughts?

Took this image way back with +Guillaume Desachy , +Larry Nienkark and +Maximilian Laue at Hawk Hill . It was a fun morning where we were hoping for fog to cover the bridge. Instead, it ended up hovering over the city. The sunrise itself wasn't spectacular as there were no clouds. I focused on the bridge and got this image instead.

I used a 70-200mm lens with a 1.4x convertor. I wanted to show the bridge against the city and this comp appeared to be nice. The real challenge was keeping the camera steady as it was very windy that morning.

The real challenge was separating the layers from the muddy RAW file. A liberal use of curves, and layer masks along with burning and dodging helped me achieve this look.

I took this way back in 2013 when I went to Big Sur with my friends. The long exposure belies aggressive water, for the waves were crashing mercilessly on these rocks. There was a very strong wind as well which not only made it difficult to keep the camera still, but also pretty darn cold!

How was this shot taken:
I used a 6 stop ND filter to smooth the water out. The color of the water in Big Sur is probably the closest I've seen to the water in Hawaii. I wanted to show these tones without the distraction of crashing waves.

I want to see how much I can translate what is given in the book into practice. Once I have a few images ready, I'll share the comprehensive review for the book :)

How was this shot taken:
I wanted a very minimal image where I could express the mood and story using the tones in B&W rather than wave action or rocks in the foreground. This image was taken during sunset, and I used an ND filter to create the motion in the clouds, and freeze the waves.

How was this shot processed:
I used a combination of luminosity masks and SGMs to create unique selections for each part of the image. I also used some vision drawings to get an idea of where to emphasize light and dark in the image. I must admit that it's quite fun!

It's like an amphitheater.

How was this shot taken:
A lot of people shoot the falls from behind and under the bridge to show the stream along with the falls. I decided to do something different. I went as close as I could to the falls to capture the start of the stream before the bridge. Once here, it was a tricky task to frame the shot without getting my camera mercilessly sprayed by the falls. To capture this field of view, which I think is nearly 150 degrees, I had to stitch 4 frames, each of which was bracketed for focus points, and dynamic range. It took me a good hour to negate the spray, wipe my lens, focus again, shoot a frame, and so on. In the end it was worth the effort :)

How was this shot processed:
The most challenging part of processing this image was stitching the various frames together. This wasn't something photoshop could  do automatically, so I had to use manual perspective blending to achieve it. Once that was done, I processed the image using my usual workflow. This is the first time I've tried a blend this hard, so hope it's worked out.

For shots like this, it's very important not to go overboard with contrast, since the pastel feeling of the image would then be lost. In fact, I reduced clarity on this so that it gives a dreamy feeling.

Rear Guard Arches National Park

"Remnants from years gone by, they grow stronger with each passing day."

How was this shot taken:
I've learnt to make the most of the light I have at a scene when the best laid plans go to waste. Here, the clouds were ominous and menacing, and I figured that without the sun illuminating the red rock, color wouldn't add much. So, I pre-visualized a monochrome image and came up with this composition.

"To stop the flow of music would be like the stopping of time itself, incredible and inconceivable."

I took this on a cloudy morning while recording my Arcanum video. The sunrise wasn't all that great but there were patches of color so I tried to catch that.

How was this shot taken:
I was pretty close to the edge of the rock formation here,  and waited for a flow of water into the crack. I took it at a shutter speed to show water movement and not smooth it out.

How was this shot processed:
Most of the processing was done in Lightroom itself. I used photoshop only for web sharpening

I know this icon has been shot to death, but not by me. When I was here during sunset with another half a million people, we had the worst colorless sunset one can imagine. It was cloudy, and then cloudy some more. Not to mention the sweltering heat. It was really challenging experience to say the least. There was one brief moment during this time when the sky opened up and a patch of sunlight illuminated the top of the arch.

How was this shot taken:
I waited patiently as couple after couple went to the arch and took selfie after selfie. In some occasions, The guy used to shoot his wife/girlfriend, and then they'd swap places. I was mentally making a note that I need atleast 5000 frames to mask out people from the shot. When the sun broke through the clouds, I had two seconds when only 2 people were hanging on the arch. After that, it was business as usual.
How was this shot processed:
I spent 4 hours masking out, cloning out, averaging out people from this shot. Then I spent 4 minutes processing it to add contrast and color.

This was taken during the time +Jeff Sullivan and +Lori Hibbett visited us, and we had quite an interesting shoot. I've never seen anyone like Jeff and Lori, who have such a passion to travel and photograph.

How was this shot taken:
Although the image shows a calm water surface, it was anything but. Waves were lashing at us non stop, and I had a Circular Polarizer  on which acts as a 2 stop ND filter. Additionally, it saturates colors as well.

How was this shot processed:
I had to bring out the colors in the water, and the foreground rocks, so I didn't do much else other than remove the color cast in the image, and selectively adding contrast to the various parts of the image.

I tried to catch some stars here, but it was really difficult with all the light pollution. However, I took 2 shots, one for the sky, and one for the foreground. I got a couple of faint stars in, but that's about all I got before the wind got really crazy and drove us out :)

How was this shot processed:
I blended the two layers using luminosity masks as it was challenging to process the top half of the bridge separately and the bottom half separately. After that, it was a couple of selective adjustments to get the final shot in.

Olloclip , Photojojo or iPro Lens

Hey there phone shooters. I'm thinking about getting a lens kit for my iPhone 6 Plus.

Which one do you guys recommend? I have no idea what to expect from the big brands and would appreciate a nice review of them before I invest.

Some things I noticed where that most of these brands need you to take off your protective case and then use them.

Also, how friendly are these brands when you upgrade? Are they still compatible?

+Mark Esguerra +Rob Lopes : Either of you use these in your phones? :)

Concrete Jungle Bishop, CA

"The drought has come and taken the water with him, far away from the realm of man."

Nothing groundbreaking here. I took this image merely as a reminder of how much the drought has affected California. Behind the trees is South Lake, or at least what is left of it. The drought has taken away all the water here, so it looks like a concrete manufacturing facility.

I ran into +Alexander S. Kunz & his wife +Shuwen Lisa Wu here, and they gave me a few pointers of where to shoot :)

Speaking of Alex, is this a mountain for you ? :P

There wasn't much to process in this shot as it already had a decent exposure when I took it. I put it through the usual grind in CS6 making small color and contrast adjustments. That was all :)

The hardest part of processing this image was getting the white balance right. After that, I needed to use basic contrast and color adjustments for each layer to bring them out.

Jurassic Falls Columbia River Gorge, Oregon

"I've rarely experienced a scene that has moved me more than one where a waterfall thunders into a river deep in an emerald forest."

Punchbowl falls is one of those falls where you have to pick up your jaw off the floor when you see it for the first time. The hike to punchbowl is itself very interesting, and on the morning of the this hike, I was all alone in the trail. A couple of deer jumped past me, but that was about all the life I saw around. I heard that a log has now fallen across and obscures the view to the falls. I guess I was lucky to catch this scene as it was before this happened :)

500px: I've posted it on #500px  as well, so do give it a look if you have time.

How was this shot taken:
I had to wade into icy cold water to get this composition. I had not planned for that and was wearing shorts and some basic water shoes. I hadn't come this far to turn back, so I waded in. After about 30 seconds in thigh deep water, I was sure that I didn't have legs anymore. I captured different compositions and fiddled around with my polarizer to cut the glare and saturate the greens. When I came out, it took a good 10 minutes for my feet to regain their senses. But you know what, I'd do this all over again just to see this beautiful falls.

How was this shot processed:
Most of the editing was done in Adobe Camera RAW. For some selective color adjustments, and contrast adjustments, I used Photoshop. For a scene like this, often, no processing is needed :)

Strings of Gold Torrey Pines

"With light reflected and harp strings, she plays the watery gold beautiful."

I took this during an early morning walk. The clouds were absent, but the warm sunlight bathed these waves in gold, so I hatched a plan ;)

How was this shot taken:
I waited for the wave pattern to form, and in the mean time, worked on getting the exposure and shutter speed right. After that, it was just pressing the shutter ;)

How was this shot processed:
Straight out of lightroom, with minimal contrast adjustments. Used Photoshop for sharpening.
