Thomas Hawk6,156,0612,500 Kick Ass Google+ Photographers (part 4 of 5)This is the fifth time I've shared my photographer's circle on Google+.  I'm going to share it in 5 posts.  Thus far, I've shared last name A-Da, Da-Ho, Ho-Mi.  Today's , part 4 of 5, today, represents Mi-Sh.  I'll share the last remaining circle tomorrow.  I originally shared my photographers circle at 500, 1,000, 1,500 and 2,000 photographers.  I'll probably share it again eventually when it gets to 3,000.A few notes about this circle. The criteria that I look for (and don't always get right) in this circle is that the photographer produce interesting and engaging photography.  I also look for people who are active in the community, post mostly their own work, and post regularly.  I'm looking more for people who post their own work and less of the noise stuff (gifs, links, non-photography, promotions, etc.).  I also like people who are positive, friendly, nice, helpful, etc. and dislike people who are mean, snarky, jerks, disrespectful, etc.I have a pretty well known bias against signatures and watermarks.  You will see very few photographers in my circles who use them.  I really hate the watermark debate and would rather not have it with folks.  I just don't like them -- it's my circle that I have to look at.  There are likely a few folks in here who use them who are friends of mine, but for the most part, this is a pretty watermark free circle.  It's totally cool if you love your watermark, it's just not something I really want to look at.  Please don't hate me for my aesthetic preference.  Finally, the photography community on Google+ is probably the best one on the internet today.  There is no way that I can possibly include all of the fine photographers worth following on G+.  There are wayyyyy too many.  These are just 2,500 that I personally have noticed.  I'm sure I left out some really amazing ones -- like you if you are not in this circle :)  I'll probably also totally kick myself when I realize that I accidentally left out a really obvious good one who may even be a friend of mine -- again, maybe even like you.  :)Stay tuned for part 5 and thanks again to all of the great photographers on G+ who make this place such a delight to hang out.Part 1-5:  http://goo.gl/17ujpnPart 2-5:  http://goo.gl/3vn0OCPart 3-5:  http://goo.gl/lyVn6f*Note, Google Circles are terribly wonky.  It wouldn't let me add some photographers in my circle into these circles because of "domain errors."  If this affected you, sorry about that.2013-09-04 15:53:284915965104CC G+

Charles Lupica60,136►►►►►►►═════════════════════◄◄◄◄◄◄◄         Top 500 most followed photographers          ►►►►►►►═════════════════════◄◄◄◄◄◄◄Once again it's time to share my circle of the top 500 most followed photographers.  I'm sharing the circle here but I posted the the full list as a series of posts on +Most Followed Photographers on G+. Photographers with an " * " in front of their name are not included in the numbered count because they only share outside content,  their content is content suitable to a blog and usually has no images associated with it, or they have become mostly or completely inactive on G+.This list was complied from two previous lists and a line-by-line search of CircleCount.  If you know of someone that should have been on the list and isn't, the most likely cause is that their +CircleCount profile doesn't include the word photographer, or camera, photo, or foto. Or, I had a senior moment and missed them.  I thought I had avoided that this time but I still managed to miss +Magnus Ericson should should be around 454. I noticed some interesting things when compiling this circle.  There are a lot of people that moved into the top 500 that abandoned G+ for some reason or their interaction has become one post a month.  I have also noticed that many of the photographers in this group have a lower follower count than they had 6 weeks to 8 weeks ago.  I'm not sure what conclusion can be drawn from this but I find it very curious. To view the lists please see the following links.001 to 080: http://goo.gl/mmr7w  4'431'409 - 55771081 to 160: http://goo.gl/mXuup  55368 - 37454161 to 240: http://goo.gl/rLmy1  37343 - 30457241 to 320: http://goo.gl/o06Hy  30131 -25785321 to 390: http://goo.gl/747Lf  25760 -23013390 to 450: http://goo.gl/xDc2D  23006 - 21347450 to 510: http://goo.gl/sEnac  21321 - 194402013-02-23 23:33:1450013641100CC G+
Margaret Tompkins43,985>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Great Photographers With < 50,000 FollowersThis is a very special circle.  I’ve not shared it before but I have shared the people in it.  I call it the Graduates Circle.  These are the fine people that I shared with you when they had < 25,000 followers but now they have more – they’ve graduated!  These are the people who are top photographers, very interactive, and are the heart and soul of G+.  I ask each of them to identify those people who inspire them, form a circle and share it.The photographers here are all in my personal circles.  The choices are mine and mine alone.  No one asked, begged, or pleaded to belong.  No bribes were offered or accepted.  These are the people that I follow because I appreciate their great quality photography and their interaction.  Most I have met as I help curate several of the photography themes.  There are NO requirements to share this circle.  I would appreciate the people in this circle plus the post, leave a comment, and share the circle as public.  Each profile has been verified by me.  Most have between 25,000 and 50,000 followers.  They each have high quality original photography content.  You won’t find many animated gifs!  I have included myself in the circle. I wasn’t included, what do I do?  If you meet the criteria, weren’t included, but think you should be, then leave me a comment.  Maybe I don’t know about you.  There are millions of people on G+ and I don’t know everyone.  However, I’ll be happy to have a look at your work if you will call it to my attention.  Start posting landscapes that get my attention (see above)!!There’s a really great photographer XXX that you didn’t include.  Please feel free to recommend qualified people.  I discover new people every day and would be happy to look at their work.  Please make sure that the recommended person meets the criteria.  If they don’t then that tells me a lot about you! #Circleshare   #Sharedcircles   2013-02-16 21:06:161261232987CC G+

Bobette Kyle1,193Wedding professionals and businesses circle sharing time! This circle is actually up to 1,028 but Google+ will only let me share 500. (I've tried splitting it, but G gives me an error about adding too many people for the day and then it gets erased, and UG...haven't figured out how to get the whole circle to you yet).ANYWAY, it's great for inspiration and networking. Enjoy and share! And when you share, don't forget to click the "include yourself in shared circle" at the bottom.  2013-01-21 14:59:47501305CC G+

Jeff Sullivan1,152,722Most-Followed 500 Photographers CircleWhile a circle like this has the obvious drawback of missing some excellent photographers newer to the site, Charles often follows up his Top 500 Most Followed Photographer circle with circles going all the way down to photographers with less than 5000 contacts.  Here are four circles Charles has created to help us discover and recognize photographers at all levels within the G+ community:Under 5000 -    Under 7500 -    Under 15,000 - 500 Most Followed Photographers - (here)I like to interact with people who are active in photography... share at least a photo or two of their own original work per week, so I'll slowly whittle the circle down to a stream of excellent photography (I've started, but may not finish for a few weeks).---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------+Charles Lupica  Charles Lupica Dec 25, 2012 (edited)  -  Public►►►►►►►═════════════════════◄◄◄◄◄◄◄         Top 500 most followed photographers list                   circle of 500             and Group 6: 421 to 500►►►►►►►═════════════════════◄◄◄◄◄◄◄If you're not in this circle and you think you should be, I'm sorry.  I have missed a few people by pure accident.  My methods are entirely manual and I do miss people.  I have checked every profile and I have included only those people that share their own work, and share it on G+. Bloggers and people doing mostly reshares weren't included. Some big name photographers that don't share a lot of their own work were included - sorry for the double standard. Here is the 6th and last part  of my list of the top 500 most followed photographers - Here are links to the previous parts of the list.Group 1: http://tinyurl.com/cf58vws - 1 to 100Group 2: http://tinyurl.com/bodaspk - 101 to 193Group 3: http://tinyurl.com/bsb87u4 - 194 to 250 and circleGroup 4: http://tinyurl.com/d4ulv6q  - 250 to 340Group 5: http://tinyurl.com/cjpmgy4 - 341 to 420 Group 6: 421 to 500 and circle of 500 (this post)If you are on this list, I urge you to comment, plus and share the post. I have sifted through lots of pages and circles as well as http://circlecount.com/  to try to get an accurate list. If I'm missing anyone, please let me know.  I have specifically left off a few people who only share links to their content housed elsewhere,  people who share a lot of other people's work without sharing their own, or people that appear to be inactive. The rank numbers are off by 1 because I included the same person twice in an earlier list.#Top500CircleDec   #circleshare   #circlesharing   #sharedcircles   #sharedpubliccircles  420 +Jennifer Luzio 21797421 +Matt Suess 21794422 +2013-01-07 15:33:25500221451CC G+

They also have "more photos, less spam." There have been many additions and a few drops (mostly for spam or inactivity).Be sure to get all 14 circles. Share! If you miss any of the circles they can be found at: +Gailen Mapes and scroll back to September 15th for the start of this set.  (Previous complete set was published starting September 1st.)I am hard up against the 5000 limit. From here on, I am going to have to become rather more strict about the "spam rules." Essentially if I have to go back more than a screen on your profile before I hit original material, there is a good chance that I may drop you from the circles. Of course there will be mitigating factors...Because of the way that Google no longer presents every person who adds me to their circles to me it is quite possible that I have missed some pretty good photographers.  If I am following you, chances are that you are already in one of these circles or in my "check later" circle.  If you think you have been missed, tag a comment on one of these posts and I will check your profile out for inclusion.  Guidelines for inclusion can be found at: https://plus.google.com/u/0/103752943025677384806/about2012-09-19 11:44:3630516310CC G+

Essentially if I have to go back more than a screen on your profile before I hit original material, there is a good chance that I may drop you from the circles. Guidelines for inclusion can be found at: https://plus.google.com/u/0/103752943025677384806/about2012-08-05 11:45:34313618CC G+

Martin Bailey37,482It's been a while since I shared my Photography circle, so here goes. This circle is the result of a year on Google+ interacting with many, many amazing photographers. It isn't a comprehensive list of the best photogs on G+, and it doesn't contain everyone that I interact with or follow. I have a few other circles for people that share good info but don't interact, and I have some lists of friends that haven't taken the time to upload enough photos to make their profile look pretty. I'll shift them over when their profiles look good. Superficial? Yes, but I like things to look pretty. This isn't a list that I'll add people to on request. If our paths cross and you share good content, I'll add you in due course. If you think you should be in here but aren't, I'm sorry. Let's stay friends and you'll be in their someday if you continue to share original and interesting photography related information. There are also a number of people that write in Japanese in here. If you don't like posts in languages you don't understand, weed those plussers out later, but they are in the list primarily because they're great photographers, so hopefully you'll keep them circled.Enjoy...2012-07-18 12:47:18438501350CC G+

I mean, you've seen circles for "Most interactive photographers", The Kick Ass Photographers", "The Inspirational Photographers", "The best Nature and Wildlife Photographers", and the list goes on.This post contains a list and a circle. The circle contains the 500 most followed photographers with less than 60'000 followers.  The list is a list of photographers that have more than 60'000 followers.  Most people on the list have over 1 million followers because they are on the G+ list of suggested users (commonly referred to as the SUL).  But who are the most followed ? Here is an updated version of a circle  I shared a few months back. I have tried to find all of the top photographers and add them to this circle. Obviously the last 50 places probably change daily so this is the list as I checked it before sharing. The number of followers needed to be on the list has changed a lot over the last 4 months.  Back in February you needed  13'117 followers, in mid-June that number is around 17'200. Why is this circle of interest ? Well, because it wasn't chosen by me or any other individual. It was chosen by the G+ community. Some of the people in the circle are great photographers, some are great at being interactive, some are just plain good at marketing themselves, and many have a combination of the above. But, in the end, the G+ community has chosen them as the top 550 photographers to follow.• Why is xxxx not on the list ?  Photographers that haven't been active on G+ for more than 6 weeks weren't included.  Several photographers that only post sporadically and generally less than one post a month aren't included• If you find someone on the list that you don't really think is a photographer, send me an email and / or a private post and I'll look into removing them or leave a comment below.• If you know of someone that I missed that has more than 17'200 followers, let me know and I'll add them to the list for next time.• You could call this the User's Choice Award circle because people on G+ have chosen to follow the people in this list and circle. Why share this circle ? Photographers were among the first people to embrace G+. Over the last few months I have seen photographers add significant numbers of followers and fall in over all standings. Wordy people and celebrities are overtaking photographers. +Trey Ratcliff +Thomas Hawk and +Lisa Bettany are the only photographer2012-06-14 13:42:29500244215241CC G+

Need some help or advice please.  When I turn on my DT7 Phantom Transmitter, I get a green light, then a loud beep, then a read light, then it turns off. I downloaded the assistant software, and turned on the transmitter in loader mode (holding down the loader button), but it shows firmware at 0.0.0.0 and no upgrade. Any ideas? I've contacted DJI with no response yet.  Seems like the firmware is bricked and needs to be flashed.  Can that be done by the user?

Back in February of 2008, Belize was gifted with a total lunar eclipse. This occurs when the earth passes between the full moon and the sun. I remember staying up all night to photograph the moon from my front veranda every 1/2 hour or so. The next morning I brought 16 images into photoshop and created this composite.

For you star gazers, you can see the constellation Orion in the middle of the photo, and the constellation Tarus in the upper left (V-shaped star cluster) The bright star in Tarus is Aldebaran, a red giant star located about 68 light years away ... what beautiful names the stars have ...

When Life Gives You Pea Soup, Make Seree ...

Visibility was so bad at Lighthouse Reef during a recent exploratory trip, that I left my camera in the tender 50% of the time. Though the underwater topography was spectacular - caves, tunnels, pillars and vertical cliffs - the chances of capturing a worthy image was near null.

However, once back in the studio, I noticed this image of a school of Ocean Triggers. I usually shoot RAW images extremely flat, meaning that during post processing I start with an almost pea soupy grey image that gives me maximum ability to manipulate. I started popping up contrast and reducing saturation, manipulating the highlights till they glowed and muting the shadows to the edge of noise, and suddenly a black and white image began to develop. The rays of sun light where enhanced through dodging and burning, the "noise" of particulate matter in the... more »

We worked on Halfmoon Caye for 3 days; each day getting up at 4am to prep photo gear and load the boats to leave the island by 5:30am; returning at 6:00pm in time to watch the sun sink below the horizon as we unloaded the boats.

The last day I asked Chip if we could get back an hour earlier so I could photograph the bird colony at sunset. After 12 hours on the sea - hungry, hot and tired - the last thing you want to do is to put on boots, long pants, long sleeve shirt and lug a 400mm lens 200 meters through coastal vegetation then up the steep viewing platform steps.

The wind was howling so had the following settings:

400mm lens with a 2x converter
ISO - 400
F/9 - wanted some depth of field for sun and birds
1/400 sec. (trying to freeze the action)
burst mode (5 frames per second)

SHARK TAGGING in BELIZE

Being tasked with documenting Rachel Graham's shark tagging project at Lighthouse Atoll, Belize for the second year, I wanted to capture a closeup of how the tags look on the shark. Now remember, these sharks are first hooked, then restrained, measured and tagged, all the while struggling and thrashing to be free of lines and hands.

I never really considered the shark being upset when released.

So as this 4 foot Caribbean Reef shark was about to be released I positioned myself to catch him as he swam past. Composing through the viewfinder, I saw the restraints removed, the shark released and suddenly a living torpedo with teeth homing in on me.

It is funny what goes through your head when faced with a difficult situation - "Brilliant Tony, get in the water with an angry shark". I've experienced panic before and for a split... more »

Off to Halfmoon Caye and Lighthouse Atoll this morning to work with Rachel Graham, Wilidlife Conservation Society and the Shark Tagging Project. A couple weeks ago, I was working with the Spawning Aggregation Team out of University of Belize on the Calabash Caye Field Station at Turneffe Atoll, and while I haven't had a chance to edit through all those photos, I wanted to post this one of a diver and a large school of Creole Wrasse, a very common sight at Turneffe. I spent 8 hours watching these love birds one day while working with the Scarlet Six Biomonitoring crew. They (the birds, not the crew ;) spent an awful lot of time "french kissing" ... Charles Britt says it probably was the male feeding the female, I like to think they were in love ... they are perched above the nesting hole ... usually one was inside minding the chicks/eggs, but occasionally they both came out and groomed each other. When one flew off, the other would crouch inside the next, with its head resting on the rim - with an almost sad look. When the partner reappeared, they both put up such a raucous call to each other as if they were over joyed to see each other ... OK, enough anthropomorphizing ... Chiquibul Forest Reserve, Belize.

“You need to let the little things that would ordinarily bore you suddenly thrill you.” ― Andy Warhol

I don't think I have ever had a boring dive ... even when the visibility sucks, there are so many little things to look at, like this brain coral. The long edge of this photo is actually about 2" long.

One thing about the ocean, you rarely see the clutter of birth, live, death and decay that you experience in the rainforest. A healthy reef appears relatively clean and fresh; colorful and alive.

Sometimes I come across a photo that makes me look twice. At first I thought "this looks like a hell of a low tide, all that coral is exposed". But looking closer, I notices a slight break of waves over the top of some of the coral heads. In fact, the water is so clear, that it is an illusion that the coral heads are above water. This photo provides a clear view of what our barrier reef is - not rubble and dead coral skeletons - but a living, growing, healthy organism.

20 Things About Photography Expeditions in the Tropics I Learned All Over Again

I recently returned from an expedition into the tropical forests Belize's most wild area, the Bladen Nature Reserve.  I traveled with rangers from a grass roots organization called Ya'axche Conservation Trust to photograph and document a recently discovered Harpy Eagle's nest.  It had been 2 years since I ventured deep into Belizean jungle - and every day I gave thanks for the past experience I gained in managing camera gear and my body in this difficult environment ... I sort of learned all over again what I already knew.  Here are 20 things I can pass on should you want to take your expensive camera gear and risk it to document one of the most wild and beautiful habitats on earth.

I spent last week with a Japanese film crew doing a documentary on Belize. I did all the underwater work for them. One site we worked at was Crawl Caye at the very southern end of the South Water Caye Marine Reserve. The day was very windy, and the in water visibility was not good. Knowing I had to capture something, I worked in the shallows around Crawl Caye where the sunlight was able to penetrate and add some color other than green to the scene. I knew there would be sunrays with the cloudier water, and was fortunate to encounter a huge school of sprat - so thick it actually blocked the light at times. It is always a little tricky to shoot into the sun, as every little scratch or piece of dirt on your lens will show. I was lucky to get the school and a nice burst of sunrays in this shot. In the video, the sun rays are dancing and the school of fish is pulsating ... the film crew was ecstatic with the... more »

I am finding the marine life in the South Water Caye Marine Reserve becoming more and more adapted to SCUBA divers. Last weekend I snorkeled with a large school of permit, followed immediately by a large school of tarpon. This turtle was eating a sponge on the drop off, and after giving us a once over, continued to feed. Coral growth in the shallower waters appears to be on the upswing. All in all, the health of the SWCMR seems to be recovering from the devastation of the coral die offs of the last decade. I'm off on assignment to both the SWCMR and Lighthouse Reef through the weekend - fingers crossed for good weather and clear waters.

This week I go from the deep valleys of the Bladen Nature Reserve to the wide open spaces of the Belize Barrier Reef. This also means a half day of prepping equipment - from cleaning lenses, cameras, sensors and recharging batteries, to testing underwater equipment and ensuring all o-rings are free of specks of dirt to the large dome port being spotless to ensuring my SCUBA gear is performing flawlessly. The mind set for underwater photography is so different from land photography in every way - light, colors, composition and the technical aspect of remembering you are in an even more foreign environment than the damp, dark, muddy tropical forest. If you are not comfortable breathing underwater and confident enough to concentrate 80% on your photography and not your equipment (SCUBA and camera gear), you will find underwater work frustrating. The photo below is a long exposure of a gentle swell breaking... more »

The last morning of the expedition it rained...and the mist was thick. I could not pull my camera gear out as condensation would immediately fog the lens and inside mirrors of the camera body. Plus, the trails were difficult to walk - like trudging through a mixture of ice and mollasses. I was soaked with sweat, not damp, but like I just walked out of the water...and oh the pack was heavy. I knew that when the sun came out there was a possibility of the classic "sun ray shot" through the canopy, so kept looking for it. When I saw it, I quickly pulled out the clothes I normally sleep in to dry off my arms, hands and head - pulled out the Canon 5D Mark III and my 14mm. Being careful to keep my hands and skin away from the lens (even putting your hands a few inches from the lens puts off enough moisture to fog the lens), I swung the camera around in circles to create a flow of air, blowing the... more »

Woke up to pouring rain here in Dangriga - not a great sign for a week in the back country. Fortunately the forecast calls for improving weather over the week. Really excited!

Have made arrangements for a guide from BFREE (Belize Foundation for Research and Environmental Education) to show us the Harpy Eagle nest in the Bladen. We will stay about 200m-300m from the nest to ensure we don't disturb them. This means backing in another 45 lbs (20.5 Kg) of camera gear - a 400mm f/2.8 along with the necessary tripod and mounts. All together we'll backpack in about 75 lbs (34 Kg) of camera gear - 2 camera bodies, assorted lenses, LOTS of batteries, flash - and 15 lbs (6.8 Kg) of my personal gear - hammock, change of clothes, first aid, snacks and toothbrush - distributed over 2 packs.

Since I don't have any recent photos of the Bladen - my last trip was in the mid 1990's with... more »

I have a great opportunity this weekend to photograph in the Bladen Nature Reserve. This is probably the most pristine protected area in Belize - pure wild tropical forest. The 5 day photo expedition will take a bit of planning as I have to carry everything in on my back, including camera gear. If I get a chance, I'll take a photo of the equipment I pack and post. This is a photo taken from an Astrum Helicopter shoot of the Bladen River in 2006.

I am kind of an old fashion photographer, so while I love the 50's "glamour" and "pin-up" look, I shoot in the "documentary" style - lighting, shadow, composition, subject are my concerns. It is one reason I love interacting with the younger photographers, they help me "see" with different eyes. So when the photo shoot with Miss Belize - Destinee Dominique Arnold - generated so many great photos to work with, that I decided to "play" a little with one of the images.

This is not an HDR image, it is layer upon layer upon layer in Photoshop to manipulate color, exposure, contrast, etc. to try and give me a mixture of the 50's style and the modern style. I ran it past a few friends and they seem to like it - some referred to it as "high fashion". I'll post the original later to give you something to compare it to.

After a very long day of shooting - the camera put away, the tripod in its case, boots off and sandals on, thoughts of a long hot shower in my head - I come around a corner and see this field of pinks, reds and oranges with bits of yellow light dancing between the blossoms. What is a photographer to do? Out come the tripod, the camera; on go the boots, take a long gulp of water and into the field I go. The number of butterflies made it possible to focus a 100mm Macro lens on an isolated flower, set the lens to f/5.6 @ 1/1000 (have to freeze the movement) and shoot till the sun disappeared. Hope this brightens your day.

Dr. Rachel Graham studies sharks. She live captures, measures, tags and releases them. When she asked if I would document some field work for her (actually it was an assignment for Men's Journal), I jumped at it. There is little I find more exciting or adrenaline pumping than swimming with a tiger shark, even if it is controlled by a line around its caudal fin. The film crew is from National Geographics "Born to Explore" series, and yes that is the star of the show Richard Wiese.  There is still time to enter the sweepstakes to win a 2013 calendar of underwater Belize at http://bit.ly/VFQGje
