Thomas Hawk6,146,1772500 Kick Ass Google+ Photographers (part 3 of 5)This is the fifth time I've shared my photographer's circle on Google+.  I'm going to share it in 5 posts.  Last week I shared last name A-Da, and Da-Ho.  Today's , part 3 of 5, today, represents Ho-Mi.  I'll share the remaining two tomorrow and Thursday.  I originally shared my photographers circle at 500, 1,000, 1,500 and 2,000 photographers.  I'll probably share it again eventually when it gets to 3,000.A few notes about this circle. The criteria that I look for (and don't always get right) in this circle is that the photographer produce interesting and engaging photography.  I also look for people who are active in the community, post mostly their own work, and post regularly.  I'm looking more for people who post their own work and less of the noise stuff (gifs, links, non-photography, promotions, etc.).  I also like people who are positive, friendly, nice, helpful, etc. and dislike people who are mean, snarky, jerks, disrespectful, etc.I have a pretty well known bias against signatures and watermarks.  You will see very few photographers in my circles who use them.  I really hate the watermark debate and would rather not have it with folks.  I just don't like them -- it's my circle that I have to look at.  There are likely a few folks in here who use them who are friends of mine, but for the most part, this is a pretty watermark free circle.  It's totally cool if you love your watermark, it's just not something I really want to look at.  Please don't hate me for my aesthetic preference.  Finally, the photography community on Google+ is probably the best one on the internet today.  There is no way that I can possibly include all of the fine photographers worth following on G+.  There are wayyyyy too many.  These are just 2,500 that I personally have noticed.  I'm sure I left out some really amazing ones -- like you if you are not in this circle :)  I'll probably also totally kick myself when I realize that I accidentally left out a really obvious good one who may even be a friend of mine -- again, maybe even like you.  :)Stay tuned for parts 4 and 5 and thanks again to all of the great photographers on G+ who make this place such a delight to hang out.Part 1-5:  http://goo.gl/17ujpnPart 2-5:  http://goo.gl/3vn0OC*Note, Google Circles are terribly wonky.  It wouldn't let me add some photographers in my circle into these circles because of "domain errors."  If this affected you, sorry about that.2013-09-03 18:49:364857231117

From now on, he will no longer actively participate in curating nor he will show up in official announcements anymore. Obviously he will keep an eye on Monochrome Monday, but he will focus his time and effort into other projects here on g+.He has already notified official lists about this decision and he asked them to remove his name from the MCM team.THANK YOU Charles from all of us at MCM, you have made this theme so great and popular! You will be missed here!___________________________The Monochrome Monday theme is currently running on high levels as always! In fact, also this week we have received ~580 photos and about 1080 people have taken part!We truly want to thank everyone for participating in #MonochromeMonday , the theme wouldn't be so popular and special without you!Hopefully the circle includes everyone who contributed to Monochrome Monday this week, but experience says we missed some. Everyone is important to the success of the theme and we apologize if we missed you.+Hans Berendsen +Jerry Johnson +Steve Barge +Nurcan Azaz and myself would like to thank you for joining us this week. See you next Monday!Note: We want to be up front and transparent as your curators. Many of the people in this circle received a "notification" that we added them to our circles. This is a temporary circle that we have to create based on the tools available to us on this platform to build our circles, and please know that we can't keep everyone in the long term. We will keep people that have circled us as long as we can, but we may need to eventually drop some of the people that added us.This is Part 2 of 2Part 1 A-J: https://plus.google.com/109633732820372995629/posts/JFQvFT3s3oP#circleshare #sharedcircles #sharedpubliccircles +Best Shared Circle2012-07-28 00:05:332635823

The curators of #SacredSunday (+Charles Lupica - +Margaret Tompkins - +Robyn Morrison - +Sherrie von Sternberg - +Manfred Berndtgen) would like to thank you for your wonderful contributions, be it photos, poems, songs, texts, or support. SacredSunday is like a big travel around the physical and spiritual world, and it's bringing people together. On behalf of the whole team:• Firstly, we would like to thank everyone. • There continued to be a very good turn out this week and a growing community of regular and new contributors. A special welcome to the newcomers!• We realize that naming all of the curators can get to be a bit much so we ask you to name at least one of us and the page. Certainly, we all like to receive the notice so we hope you'll mention us all but we'll understand if you don't.Hopefully the circle includes everyone that contributed to Sacred Sunday this week, but experience says we missed some. Everyone is important to the success of the theme and we apologize if we missed you. Don't worry, there will be a new circle next week.Note: we want to be up front. Thomas Hawk2,473,6682,000 Kick Ass Photographers on Google+Part 2 of 4 (Ev-La)Part 1 of 4 (A-Ev) here:  http://goo.gl/Z333gThis is the fourth time since joining G+ almost a year ago that I'm sharing my photographers circle.  I shared it with 500 photographers, 1,000 photographers, 1,500 photographers and now 2,000 photographers.  I have to break my circle up into four 500 photographer circles as that is the G+ limit.  Each day this week (Mon.- Thurs.) I'll share a different circle.  Today is the second circle and includes photographers with the last name's Ev-La. A few notes about these circles.  I always get hated on when I share them by people.  Inevitably if I include 2,000 people, I will leave 50,000 people out.  This is not intentional or personal.  This circle is not "the best" photographers on G+ or in the world.  It doesn't mean if you are not in my circle that you are not a "quality" photographer.  This list is simply photographers that I've stumbled across for whatever reason over the past year and have chosen to follow their work.  In some cases I've gotten to know the photographers in this circle personally -- through photowalks and trips, hangouts, in real life, etc.  Many of these people are or have become my friends.  Most of the photographers in my circle though I don't even know.  They are just people whose work I admire and want to consume -- I hope many are future friends.  :)I use some objective criteria with this circle but I use a lot of subjective criteria too.  This is, afterall, my own personal circle that I look at and +1 from every single day.  My aesthetic taste and personal preferences may be very, very different than yours.  This is ok.  Art is subjective.  That said, here a breakdown of my own preferences and biases that influence who I add into my circle.1.  I like people who are active on G+.  If you haven't posted one of your photos in the last month you probably are not in this circle.  I use a script to uncircle inactive people regularly.2.  I like photographers who mostly post their own photographs.  I dislike clutter and "dumb stuff" in my photographers circle.  Excessive reshares, circle shares, memes, gifs, youtube videos, posts not about photography, web links, etc. make me uncircle or move people to a different circle.  I also like photographers who regulate how much of their photography they post to their stream.  I don't want to see 50 shots in a row of someone's vacation.  I think about 5 photos max a day feels about right to me.3.  *Controversial* I dislike signatures and watermarks.  You will find photographers in my circle that use them.  It's just a bias, not a hard and fast rule.  I mostly want this stream to be as watermark/signature free as possible.  I totally understand and respect your reasons and decision for using watermarks/signatures.  I hope you equally respect my decision to not want to consume photos mared up with them.  Please don't turn this into a discussion about watermarks/sigs, I've spent the last 10 years thinking heavily about this issue.  It's just a personal preference and bias.4.  I like people who are active, positive, helpful, enthusiastic G+ community members.  I dislike people who are rude, mean, complainers, trolls, harrasers, etc.  If you say mean things to people, about people, about their art or their work I don't want to follow you.  I'm fine with debate and disagreement.  It should just be done respectfully -- there's a huge difference between respectful disagreement and rude behavior.  Not only will you not be in this circle if you are rude, I'll probably block you too.  I want to surround myself with positive uplifting people. 5.  I like people who directly post their work here on 2012-06-05 16:20:03500152107307

Robert Scoble1,236,665500 Hand Picked Photographers. Unfortunately only 500 people can be shared (I have 617 in this circle). I also am near my maximum of 5,000 circled (Google keeps me from circling more) so it's tough to add more, but I'm always looking to see more great photography, so if you aren't in this circle, leave your URL below so we can all check you out.By the way, I need to go through all my circles and look for inactive people again. It's been a while since I did that. If I were you I'd throw these 500 into a temporary circle, watch it for a while and move the ones you like into a circle of your own.Thank you to those of you who bring beauty into our lives. Everytime I need some inspiration I look to this circle.2012-04-22 18:03:4850014653148

Joelyn Wright1,371With just one comment... turned into an overnight sensation. Unfortunately, I never showed up to the party but that made the thread more interesting. Others (other than myself) interacted with each other and had fun. There were positive, negative, and sarcastic comments but makes the post fun. As for me being gone... I posted that comment and then went to bed thinking nothing of it. Opening my computer today with over 90+ notifications shocked me and didn't know how to respond. I just want to say thank you for interacting with me and will do my best to interact with the almost 200+ others that commented. By the way... here is the circle that EVERYONE commented on that thread. Again... thank you :)2012-03-28 03:16:1918846134

Other than a few small niches (Android nerds, photography nerds), this service has never taken off well. Many people revile it for Google's effort to cram it down the throat of everyone using their other services. Of course, that is the only way they could get their artificially inflated usage statistics that are totally ridiculous and not at all represented by reality. But hey... do no evil right?

Anyway, not that I care, I've posted here quite a lot. I get a few hundred views or more on most posts. Clearly I have someone looking. But the reality is, most people come here, see it isn't facebook or... more »

Obviously, I've cut down massively on my photography pursuits recently. In fact, I've cut down massively on my gear. I've found I can accomplish the photography I really enjoy the most with high end compacts. So now I work solely with Sony RX100 m3 and Sony RX10. It's pretty liberating, to be honest.

In reality, I've been spending all of my free time getting back into bicycling. It's something I've loved my entire life, but, never had the money or drive to really take it seriously. So I am doing that now.

I'm sure I'll get back out and do some more photography at some point. It's just a matter of shifting interests. But, that said, when I do, it won't be posted here any more. This place is in hospice, if you haven't noticed. So I invite you to check out my work and follow me if you wish on Flickr or 500px (honestly, in the long run, it... more »

So, I kinda feel like sometimes photography is more fun with simpler compact cameras. Granted, I use the mother of all compacts, the RX100M3, but, still. It is what it is. My thoughts were certainly more focused on what to photograph than what to photograph it with. Light wasn't cooperative on this day, but, hey, I found a new spot to visit when it comes out to play again.

Asymmetry

So I spent some time in the city playing with my new camera. It wasn't super fruitful due to limited light from a passing storm, but, I enjoyed myself. I found a new spot or two for some new vantage points. All-in-all, a nice evening.

No, not metaphorical or even figurative. Literally me, in that eye... doing ridiculous photographer things with my arm. Woo! Gotta love super sharp lenses and high resolution cameras, amirite?

FWIW, Google refuses to show me the preview of this upload in the order I specified. Let's hope it works out anyway.

Two Thirty-six Megapixel Cameras

But, which is which? Can you tell? I found a screamingly great deal on a Sony A7R. So, I decided to do some comparing of my own. I didn't like the image quality coming out of the A7 for a handful of reasons. Some of those are bound to still apply to the A7R in some situations, but, it was the whole pile that got me with the A7.

I can tell you that I am already significantly more impressed by the A7R's image quality. And that shutter noise? Totally overblown. Yes it's longer. Just sounds like the first gen NEX cameras. No big deal. AF feels like NEX-7 to me, maybe a little faster. I loved the NEX-7.

Anyway, this comparison was made with the same lens. Admittedly, adapted on the A7R versus the other camera. But it shouldn't matter as the crops come from near the center of the frame. Can you tell which is which?

Since you can't rely on the website or app to reproduce the image at 1:1 ratio, or even to avoid horribly compressing it, there's a link here to the full thing as well.

Support Aneutronic Fusion-based Energy Production

This group is doing great work and could really use some support for the last mile effort this year!

We're talking a very viable form of energy generation by way of aneutronic fusion (focus fusion). A vastly simpler system that directly converts the output of the reactor into electricity without a complicated heat generation -> turbine cycle involved. No waste at all. No neutrons generated. Just sweet, sweet electricity. Harnessed lightning.

These guys are small and independent. It would be excellent to see a breakthrough come from pure science and entrepreneurship unencumbered by the taint of huge, blind government funding *cough* ITER *cough*

So get in there and push a little.

Anyway, not that I care, I've posted here quite a lot. I get a few hundred views or more on most posts. Clearly I have someone looking. But the reality is, most people come here, see it isn't facebook or twitter or tumblr and walk right back out.

If you've been feeling a little icy in these parts, I wouldn't fault your for taking your leave now, especially with this indicator on full brightness. Just keep in mind that many of us use other services, sometimes more interestingly. My personal site is really a tumblr at http://ztj.io/ though I mostly link to pic uploads there. I am always meaning to use it a little more. We'll see. I tweet as well, and you'd also see notices of new images going up on 500px or Flickr there http://twitter.com/_ztj

I also use Facebook a little but, I don't do much "public" stuff there. It's mostly for friends/family and a single signon service besides Google that offers two factor authentication (yea ironic that FB offers a security improvement when dealing with authentication, but, it's true.)

Interesting article, anyway, assuming it's true. I think it would benefit Google to give up on Orkut Mk. II and refocus on powering other more creative, design-capable endeavors from around the web.... or something. Anything, really. FB and Twitter see success because of measured synergy. G+ has been so closed. It really represents a heralding of anti-openness from Google if you think about it. Never would they post any meaningful integration API, never would they let you post content directly from other services. Twitter lets you produce cards to integrate right into their stream, FB has its apps. Google completely misjudged the value of federation of content. It's the whole basis of success for its competition.___

Haze in the Valley at Twilight

Honestly, I just didn't end up anywhere I especially wanted to for a photo tonight, but, I really wanted to take one. In particular, I wanted to generate some sweet, sweet, detail porn with my D800. Obviously, you won't get the full experience if you're into that on Google+. You'll be better served over here, on Flickr where you can see the actual original JPEG upload if you want: https://www.flickr.com/photos/zacheryjensen/13961712873/

It's also on 500px where you could buy a print if it really tickled your fancy: http://500px.com/photo/67736433/haze-in-the-valley-at-twilight-by-zachery-jensen

Anyway, my favorite thing about this image is, despite the haze in the valley, I can read some of the signs that are actually miles away. I really like high resolution cameras.

It's not about making an image nobody else has ever made. It's about making one that you have never made. It's not about saying something unique. It is enough to say it again, in your own way. Then, your work is uniquely personal. But, don't go looking for what makes you stand out. Just do things the way you feel they should be done. Speak with your own accent naturally. Personality is a quality of art that is so subtle that searching for it deliberately in your own work will smother it. You will only be lost so long as you seek your self.

Will Google Hangouts ever not be terrible?

Firstly, there is no native Mac client (nor Windows, but, I can't sincerely care about that). This makes zero sense. There are iPad and iPhone clients. You have to be basically the worst developer ever to not share the majority of your code between a Mac and iOS app. It can't be more than a few days work to write a UI for a Mac version of the iOS app, especially for Google. Their UI's are universally awful particularly at launch so the expectations are already low.

Eventually, and with seemingly no relationship to anything important (like timeliness) a chat window will eventually pop up if that person continues to send messages.

Google, you built G+ by ripping off facebook left and right. Why stop now? Facebook chat works better than this. That's pretty sad (but not surprising.)

And get us native clients. The web is still a terrible application platform and will be for another decade at least. If you can't be arsed to port the iOS client to the Mac App Store with even exactly the same UI, at least open the proper APIs so someone can write their own client.___

Springtime Cliché

Well, we can't resist all of the cliché images, can we? We may not get (much of) the sakura over here, but, we get... something. Something that smells odd and honestly, I imagine it's some kind of fruit tree, but, I'm sure this particular tree never actually produces any notable fruits. Maybe it's apricots? Plums?

When I was a kid my grandmother would sing me this song about apricot trees at seemingly random times (we had a blossoming tree at her home, but, it was apples, not apricots) which went something like...

I looked out the window, and what did I see?
Popcorn popping on the apricot tree!
Spring had brought me such a nice surprise,
Blossoms popping right before my eyes.
I could take an armful and make a treat,

Small White Flowers

The first time I had a D800, it wasn't the sheer detail that first left me seriously impressed. In fact, it was the way it rendered the clear blue sky so beautifully with smoother tonal transitions and less visible noise than any other digital camera I had seen yet.

It was a photograph similar to this one in which I first noticed this attribute, actually. This one http://www.flickr.com/photos/zacheryjensen/7468401640/

Also, this is one of the few shots I've posted that is processed from RAW, in Lightroom 5.3 using a VSCO preset (with some adjustments) and a Fuji specific sharpening preset I found on some blog that works pretty well.

So the rumor is that Nikon is going to produce a collapsing 70-300mm lens for their 1 system. I find that very interesting. If it's a diffractive optics design like most of their native 1 system lenses are, then it stands a good chance of being very high quality on those cameras.

If it is indeed a high quality lens that produces decent quality images at 300mm on their upcoming 18mp Nikon 1 V3, I will be interested in that combo as a low cost, lightweight option for casual wildlife photography.

Think about it. It will be a relatively small kit, especially if the lens is collapsible, probably selling for $2000-ish total, that can do 810mm with an f/5.6 minimum aperture at the long end. Other than shooting in rather low light, that will be sufficient for quite a lot of wildlife type shooting, especially daylight birding.

So to recap: super light, super small camera, super long (810mm equivalent) focal length lens of good or great quality, very fast frame rates (20 fps at full quality) and very fast, accurate autofocus. The only thing a pro rig is going to do better is low light shooting.

Super affordable very long lens applications has always been what I had considered the greatest opportunity for Nikon's CX system to take on as a niche. So I'm interested, and will be watching the rumors until we know. I understand that it's expected that there will be an announcement about it in a week or so.___

X-T1 Continuous AF Sequence

Want to see a continuous AF sequence? I shot one off the cuff earlier today. I probably could've done with a slightly higher shutter speed,  but, meh. Still demonstrates the effect. Have a look. I shot it with the 55-200mm f/3.5-4.8 lens, btw. Focus was on his backpack. Hopefully Google+ retains the correct order. These are JPEG out of the camera except that I colorspace converted them in LR since G+ can't manage color space properly.

I finally got out to wander the city with my new X-T1 today. I have to say, this camera just flows with you. There wasn't a moment where the camera was slowing me down. And there were a number of moments where I was super happy to have the added physical dials (especially for drive and metering). I frequently moved in and out of single shot single AF mode and continuous (high), continuous AF mode and having two simple switches to turn to make that change without having to turn the camera on was great.

Oh. It's worth pointing out that, from shooting NEX for a couple of years, I developed a habit of turning my camera off whenever it wasn't immediately obvious I would be shooting. Thanks to this habit, I can easily get hundreds more exposures out of a battery than the CIPA estimates predict. Thanks to this habit, I can easily get hundreds more exposures out of a battery than the CIPA estimates predict. But, the downside with NEX cameras was always that almost no settings could be adjusted without booting the camera back up and looking through the menus.

Even with the Fuji X-E2, there were settings I had to go into a menu for. I rarely had to do anything besides twist knobs on the camera today. I only dived into the Q menu twice to adjust film simulation mode and DR setup.

As far as shooting, focus was always VERY FAST and VERY RESPONSIVE. It never once felt like a hindrance. I didn't even notice it, honestly, which is more than I could ever say for the X-E2 or X-E1.

Anyway, I'm sure I will get even more accustomed to shooting this camera over time and in more scenarios, but, bumming around in the city trying to grab opportunistic shots has always helped me learn where I have to focus my efforts to acclimatize myself to a new piece of gear. Today it was just... smooth as melted butter. I'm genuinely impressed, Fujifilm.

(Regarding my battery life claim, just as an example, today I went out without a fresh battery. It displayed full, but, I know I toyed around with at least 20-30 shots and easily 10-15 min. of playing with settings and AF. I came home with 275 exposures in RAW+JPEG and it didn't even drop a bar. Assuming it is very close to dropping a bar, that still leaves about half the battery left.)___

Experience art to produce art

I went to see an Edward Burtynsky gallery today. It's a great example of photographic work that really must be seen in person to appreciate. Unless you have access to very high resolution scans (you don't) and a 6'x7' 200 dpi monitor (you don't) then you can't see his work without seeing his work.

But, it also occurred to me while I was there that I have never intentionally visited any photographic gallery. I did once visit a small one by accident, but, there were two key differences besides the lack of intent. 1) The photos were pretty cheesy portraits of people in costumes making it more about the costumes than the photography and 2) I did not go with any expectation or leave with any sense of value attained.

Anyway, if you're in northern Utah, head over to the BYU MOA and see this gallery. It's not his most recent work, but, it's everything else. It's all amazing. And it stands as a monument to what makes me want super high resolution results in my photography. I have made some images inspired by Burtynsky's work. I'd like to make more. Seeing this gallery just increases that desire.

When I was younger and I was learning Jazz, there was one truly critical effort one simply had to make in order to improve. You had to listen to other artists. And Jazz, you can't listen to a recording and get it. I mean, sure, it can make for some great recorded entertainment. But, that's not Jazz. Just like a photograph of a person is not a person. Jazz is live. Jazz is improvisational. You have to experience it in person and become part of the conversation, even if only a mostly passive part. In doing this, I gained so much in my efforts to learn Jazz.

Today, after spending devoted time at a gallery of a photographer I respect, seeing his work as he intended it, I got very much the same type of feeling as sitting 10 feet away from a small set of Jazz artists improvising.

If you want to learn to make art, you just have to experience art, and you have to experience it as the artist intends. Period.

Now I am left with the desire to contemplate my current artistic direction and consider making any changes to my focus, my approach... my ambition. It's a good place to be.___

Once the light finally fell entirely off of Lone Peak, I turned my sights Southeast to... I don't know what this peak is called, if anything. But here it is anyway.

My first pick from shooting Lone Peak tonight is on the subtle side and straight out of the camera.

But I won't trust it to G+ so go see it over on 500px.
