Thomas Hawk6,146,1772500 Kick Ass Google+ Photographers (part 3 of 5)This is the fifth time I've shared my photographer's circle on Google+.  I'm going to share it in 5 posts.  Last week I shared last name A-Da, and Da-Ho.  Today's , part 3 of 5, today, represents Ho-Mi.  I'll share the remaining two tomorrow and Thursday.  I originally shared my photographers circle at 500, 1,000, 1,500 and 2,000 photographers.  I'll probably share it again eventually when it gets to 3,000.A few notes about this circle. The criteria that I look for (and don't always get right) in this circle is that the photographer produce interesting and engaging photography.  I also look for people who are active in the community, post mostly their own work, and post regularly.  I'm looking more for people who post their own work and less of the noise stuff (gifs, links, non-photography, promotions, etc.).  I also like people who are positive, friendly, nice, helpful, etc. and dislike people who are mean, snarky, jerks, disrespectful, etc.I have a pretty well known bias against signatures and watermarks.  You will see very few photographers in my circles who use them.  I really hate the watermark debate and would rather not have it with folks.  I just don't like them -- it's my circle that I have to look at.  There are likely a few folks in here who use them who are friends of mine, but for the most part, this is a pretty watermark free circle.  It's totally cool if you love your watermark, it's just not something I really want to look at.  Please don't hate me for my aesthetic preference.  Finally, the photography community on Google+ is probably the best one on the internet today.  There is no way that I can possibly include all of the fine photographers worth following on G+.  There are wayyyyy too many.  These are just 2,500 that I personally have noticed.  I'm sure I left out some really amazing ones -- like you if you are not in this circle :)  I'll probably also totally kick myself when I realize that I accidentally left out a really obvious good one who may even be a friend of mine -- again, maybe even like you.  :)Stay tuned for parts 4 and 5 and thanks again to all of the great photographers on G+ who make this place such a delight to hang out.Part 1-5:  http://goo.gl/17ujpnPart 2-5:  http://goo.gl/3vn0OC*Note, Google Circles are terribly wonky.  It wouldn't let me add some photographers in my circle into these circles because of "domain errors."  If this affected you, sorry about that.2013-09-03 18:49:364857231117CC G+

From now on, he will no longer actively participate in curating nor he will show up in official announcements anymore. Obviously he will keep an eye on Monochrome Monday, but he will focus his time and effort into other projects here on g+.He has already notified official lists about this decision and he asked them to remove his name from the MCM team.THANK YOU Charles from all of us at MCM, you have made this theme so great and popular! You will be missed here!___________________________The Monochrome Monday theme is currently running on high levels as always! In fact, also this week we have received ~580 photos and about 1080 people have taken part!We truly want to thank everyone for participating in #MonochromeMonday , the theme wouldn't be so popular and special without you!Hopefully the circle includes everyone who contributed to Monochrome Monday this week, but experience says we missed some. Everyone is important to the success of the theme and we apologize if we missed you.+Hans Berendsen +Jerry Johnson +Steve Barge +Nurcan Azaz and myself would like to thank you for joining us this week. See you next Monday!Note: We want to be up front and transparent as your curators. Many of the people in this circle received a "notification" that we added them to our circles. This is a temporary circle that we have to create based on the tools available to us on this platform to build our circles, and please know that we can't keep everyone in the long term. We will keep people that have circled us as long as we can, but we may need to eventually drop some of the people that added us.This is Part 2 of 2Part 1 A-J: https://plus.google.com/109633732820372995629/posts/JFQvFT3s3oP#circleshare #sharedcircles #sharedpubliccircles +Best Shared Circle2012-07-28 00:05:332635823CC G+

The curators of #SacredSunday (+Charles Lupica - +Margaret Tompkins - +Robyn Morrison - +Sherrie von Sternberg - +Manfred Berndtgen) would like to thank you for your wonderful contributions, be it photos, poems, songs, texts, or support. SacredSunday is like a big travel around the physical and spiritual world, and it's bringing people together. On behalf of the whole team:• Firstly, we would like to thank everyone. • There continued to be a very good turn out this week and a growing community of regular and new contributors. A special welcome to the newcomers!• We realize that naming all of the curators can get to be a bit much so we ask you to name at least one of us and the page. Certainly, we all like to receive the notice so we hope you'll mention us all but we'll understand if you don't.Hopefully the circle includes everyone that contributed to Sacred Sunday this week, but experience says we missed some. Everyone is important to the success of the theme and we apologize if we missed you. Don't worry, there will be a new circle next week.Note: we want to be up front. Thomas Hawk2,473,6682,000 Kick Ass Photographers on Google+Part 2 of 4 (Ev-La)Part 1 of 4 (A-Ev) here:  http://goo.gl/Z333gThis is the fourth time since joining G+ almost a year ago that I'm sharing my photographers circle.  I shared it with 500 photographers, 1,000 photographers, 1,500 photographers and now 2,000 photographers.  I have to break my circle up into four 500 photographer circles as that is the G+ limit.  Each day this week (Mon.- Thurs.) I'll share a different circle.  Today is the second circle and includes photographers with the last name's Ev-La. A few notes about these circles.  I always get hated on when I share them by people.  Inevitably if I include 2,000 people, I will leave 50,000 people out.  This is not intentional or personal.  This circle is not "the best" photographers on G+ or in the world.  It doesn't mean if you are not in my circle that you are not a "quality" photographer.  This list is simply photographers that I've stumbled across for whatever reason over the past year and have chosen to follow their work.  In some cases I've gotten to know the photographers in this circle personally -- through photowalks and trips, hangouts, in real life, etc.  Many of these people are or have become my friends.  Most of the photographers in my circle though I don't even know.  They are just people whose work I admire and want to consume -- I hope many are future friends.  :)I use some objective criteria with this circle but I use a lot of subjective criteria too.  This is, afterall, my own personal circle that I look at and +1 from every single day.  My aesthetic taste and personal preferences may be very, very different than yours.  This is ok.  Art is subjective.  That said, here a breakdown of my own preferences and biases that influence who I add into my circle.1.  I like people who are active on G+.  If you haven't posted one of your photos in the last month you probably are not in this circle.  I use a script to uncircle inactive people regularly.2.  I like photographers who mostly post their own photographs.  I dislike clutter and "dumb stuff" in my photographers circle.  Excessive reshares, circle shares, memes, gifs, youtube videos, posts not about photography, web links, etc. make me uncircle or move people to a different circle.  I also like photographers who regulate how much of their photography they post to their stream.  I don't want to see 50 shots in a row of someone's vacation.  I think about 5 photos max a day feels about right to me.3.  *Controversial* I dislike signatures and watermarks.  You will find photographers in my circle that use them.  It's just a bias, not a hard and fast rule.  I mostly want this stream to be as watermark/signature free as possible.  I totally understand and respect your reasons and decision for using watermarks/signatures.  I hope you equally respect my decision to not want to consume photos mared up with them.  Please don't turn this into a discussion about watermarks/sigs, I've spent the last 10 years thinking heavily about this issue.  It's just a personal preference and bias.4.  I like people who are active, positive, helpful, enthusiastic G+ community members.  I dislike people who are rude, mean, complainers, trolls, harrasers, etc.  If you say mean things to people, about people, about their art or their work I don't want to follow you.  I'm fine with debate and disagreement.  It should just be done respectfully -- there's a huge difference between respectful disagreement and rude behavior.  Not only will you not be in this circle if you are rude, I'll probably block you too.  I want to surround myself with positive uplifting people. 5.  I like people who directly post t2012-06-05 16:20:03500151110311CC G+

Robert Scoble1,236,665500 Hand Picked Photographers. Unfortunately only 500 people can be shared (I have 617 in this circle). I also am near my maximum of 5,000 circled (Google keeps me from circling more) so it's tough to add more, but I'm always looking to see more great photography, so if you aren't in this circle, leave your URL below so we can all check you out.By the way, I need to go through all my circles and look for inactive people again. It's been a while since I did that. If I were you I'd throw these 500 into a temporary circle, watch it for a while and move the ones you like into a circle of your own.Thank you to those of you who bring beauty into our lives. Everytime I need some inspiration I look to this circle.2012-04-22 18:03:4850014653148CC G+

Joelyn Wright1,371With just one comment... turned into an overnight sensation. Unfortunately, I never showed up to the party but that made the thread more interesting. Others (other than myself) interacted with each other and had fun. There were positive, negative, and sarcastic comments but makes the post fun. As for me being gone... I posted that comment and then went to bed thinking nothing of it. Opening my computer today with over 90+ notifications shocked me and didn't know how to respond. I just want to say thank you for interacting with me and will do my best to interact with the almost 200+ others that commented. By the way... here is the circle that EVERYONE commented on that thread. Again... thank you :)2012-03-28 03:16:1918846134CC G+

Thomas Hawk277,019So the last few days I've been redoing my circles with the goal of resharing my Kick Ass Photographers Circle when it hit 1,000 photographers. Today it hit 1,000 for the first time and so I thought I'd share them. Because a circle can only have 500 people in it, I've broken this circle up into 2 circles by last name, A-K http://goo.gl/7HVMN and L-Z http://goo.gl/EO0O2.The people in these circles are some of the highest quality photographers on G+ today. Many of them are also my personal friends and people that I've known in some cases for years. Some of them are people that I don't know at all, but I just really admire their work. Anytime one attempts to share a list like this, there is inevitably a bit of negative backlash. It would be impossible to put every great photographer on Google+ on this list. Please keep in mind that if we are friends and I missed you on this list, it is not personal. Staying on top of tons of contacts isn't easy and I'm only human. If you were on this list before and are not now, also please do not take offense. I spent a great deal of time scrubbing this list this time around and was much more strict with the criteria for inclusion. I basically was looking for high quality active G+ photographers who post mostly their own work, who post without watermarks or signatures, and who interact in the community. Not everyone in this list meets this criteria, but 98% of you do.Also, if you're not on this list it may be that I simply don't know you. We haven't met in real life. We haven't interacted online. You may be an amazing photographer but our paths just have not had a good chance to cross in a meaningful way yet. Here's to meeting many more of you kick ass photographers in the future. This is the list that I browse most often on G+. It's where I go to find my daily dose of great photography. I'm sharing it because I think that you too might like some of the photography that is being published by these photographers. Thank you to every photographer not just on this list, but on G+ as a whole for making our daily lives a little more interesting and beautiful with the great images that you generously share.Thomas Hawk shared a circle with you.2011-10-26 20:13:44500190154165CC G+

Haze in the Valley at Twilight

Honestly, I just didn't end up anywhere I especially wanted to for a photo tonight, but, I really wanted to take one. In particular, I wanted to generate some sweet, sweet, detail porn with my D800. Obviously, you won't get the full experience if you're into that on Google+. You'll be better served over here, on Flickr where you can see the actual original JPEG upload if you want: https://www.flickr.com/photos/zacheryjensen/13961712873/

It's also on 500px where you could buy a print if it really tickled your fancy: http://500px.com/photo/67736433/haze-in-the-valley-at-twilight-by-zachery-jensen

Anyway, my favorite thing about this image is, despite the haze in the valley, I can read some of the signs that are actually miles away. I really like high resolution cameras.

It's not about making an image nobody else has ever made. It's about making one that you have never made. It's not about saying something unique. It is enough to say it again, in your own way. Then, your work is uniquely personal. But, don't go looking for what makes you stand out. Just do things the way you feel they should be done. Speak with your own accent naturally. Personality is a quality of art that is so subtle that searching for it deliberately in your own work will smother it. You will only be lost so long as you seek your self.

…or something like that.

Will Google Hangouts ever not be terrible?

Firstly, there is no native Mac client (nor Windows, but, I can't sincerely care about that). This makes zero sense. There are iPad and iPhone clients. You have to be basically the worst developer ever to not share the majority of your code between a Mac and iOS app. It can't be more than a few days work to write a UI for a Mac version of the iOS app, especially for Google. Their UI's are universally awful particularly at launch so the expectations are already low.

AND

- I'm sitting here on the Google+ page and I know for a fact there is an incoming message from someone in a hangout that I have not yet seen. I just got the notification on my phone. Yet there is no indicator whatsoever on this page that there is such a message waiting. Nothing.

HOWEVER

Eventually, and with seemingly... more »

Springtime Cliché

Well, we can't resist all of the cliché images, can we? We may not get (much of) the sakura over here, but, we get... something. Something that smells odd and honestly, I imagine it's some kind of fruit tree, but, I'm sure this particular tree never actually produces any notable fruits. Maybe it's apricots? Plums?

When I was a kid my grandmother would sing me this song about apricot trees at seemingly random times (we had a blossoming tree at her home, but, it was apples, not apricots) which went something like...

I looked out the window, and what did I see?
Popcorn popping on the apricot tree!
Spring had brought me such a nice surprise,
Blossoms popping right before my eyes.
I could take an armful and make a treat,
A popcorn ball that would smell so sweet.
It wasn't really so, but it seemed tob... more »

Small White Flowers

The first time I had a D800, it wasn't the sheer detail that first left me seriously impressed. In fact, it was the way it rendered the clear blue sky so beautifully with smoother tonal transitions and less visible noise than any other digital camera I had seen yet.

It was a photograph similar to this one in which I first noticed this attribute, actually. This one http://www.flickr.com/photos/zacheryjensen/7468401640/

Another shot testing out the isolation ability of the Fujinon XF 56mm f/1.2 R lens. There was a reasonably large amount of distance between me and these strangers and still the background has a nice blur. This is why we want an f/1.2 lens on APS-C.

Also, this is one of the few shots I've posted that is processed from RAW, in Lightroom 5.3 using a VSCO preset (with some adjustments) and a Fuji specific sharpening preset I found on some blog that works pretty well.

So the rumor is that Nikon is going to produce a collapsing 70-300mm lens for their 1 system. I find that very interesting. If it's a diffractive optics design like most of their native 1 system lenses are, then it stands a good chance of being very high quality on those cameras.

If it is indeed a high quality lens that produces decent quality images at 300mm on their upcoming 18mp Nikon 1 V3, I will be interested in that combo as a low cost, lightweight option for casual wildlife photography.

Think about it. It will be a relatively small kit, especially if the lens is collapsible, probably selling for $2000-ish total, that can do 810mm with an f/5.6 minimum aperture at the long end. Other than shooting in rather low light, that will be sufficient for quite a lot of wildlife type shooting, especially daylight birding.

So to recap: super light, super small camera, super... more »

X-T1 Continuous AF Sequence

Want to see a continuous AF sequence? I shot one off the cuff earlier today. I probably could've done with a slightly higher shutter speed,  but, meh. Still demonstrates the effect. Have a look. I shot it with the 55-200mm f/3.5-4.8 lens, btw. Focus was on his backpack. Hopefully Google+ retains the correct order. These are JPEG out of the camera except that I colorspace converted them in LR since G+ can't manage color space properly.

2014-03-04 05:44:22 (0 comments, 0 reshares, 1 +1s)

I finally got out to wander the city with my new X-T1 today. I have to say, this camera just flows with you. There wasn't a moment where the camera was slowing me down. And there were a number of moments where I was super happy to have the added physical dials (especially for drive and metering). I frequently moved in and out of single shot single AF mode and continuous (high), continuous AF mode and having two simple switches to turn to make that change without having to turn the camera on was great.

Oh. It's worth pointing out that, from shooting NEX for a couple of years, I developed a habit of turning my camera off whenever it wasn't immediately obvious I would be shooting. Thanks to this habit, I can easily get hundreds more exposures out of a battery than the CIPA estimates predict. But, the downside with NEX cameras was always that almost no settings could be adjusted without... more »

Experience art to produce art

I went to see an Edward Burtynsky gallery today. It's a great example of photographic work that really must be seen in person to appreciate. Unless you have access to very high resolution scans (you don't) and a 6'x7' 200 dpi monitor (you don't) then you can't see his work without seeing his work.

But, it also occurred to me while I was there that I have never intentionally visited any photographic gallery. I did once visit a small one by accident, but, there were two key differences besides the lack of intent. 1) The photos were pretty cheesy portraits of people in costumes making it more about the costumes than the photography and 2) I did not go with any expectation or leave with any sense of value attained.

Anyway, if you're in northern Utah, head over to the BYU MOA and see this gallery. It's... more »

(Edit: btw, google completely f$&@s up images. This image is actually much more saturated, naturally, than what is seen here. Horrible image quality on this service makes it ironic that so many photogs use it. The actual JPEG is here http://f.cl.ly/items/0d0Z1S0L2x1R1I2Z0y3y/20140224180249-21816-the%20light%20was%20right%20tonight.jpg if you're curious. And if you're pixel peeping, keep in mind that the slope is gradual and stuff at the bottom of the frame is not entirely in focus. Focus is on the rock face.)

(Edit 2: Okay, I think maybe the problem is that I shoot in Adobe RGB and Google is probably screwing up the color profile. That's no excuse, but, it is probably the cause. Guess I won't post SOOC here anymore.)

So, I rented a Nikon D7100 and Sigma 50-500mm to shoot at some snow geese this weekend. Conditions were better than last year, but, not by much so I couldn't really get close enough to get any of the sort of on-water shots I wanted and the geese weren't really interested in flying over in my direction. Such is life.

I think the canadian geese were a little more comfortable around the spectators as they came nearby multiple times.

Wildlife photography is something I've always wanted to get more involved with, but, gear is pricey and doesn't really fit into what I normally want to be shooting and buying. That said, with word that Fuji will produce a super telephoto zoom for X system cameras next year, I'm going to start ramping up to take it more seriously in anticipation.

This is the third time I've gone to this location to shoot snow geese. There is... more »

I hadn't actually used Maps on OS X Mavericks until just now and uh, wow. It works really well and super smooth. I'm impressed. No more shlepping over to reload google maps from scratch when I want some directions at the desktop.

And as for accuracy concerns, I haven't had a single bit of trouble with that in over a year now. As someone who used Google Maps when it was new, I really have to say it is impressive how fast things have improved. I know it has further to go (Apple Maps) particularly in the less first worldy/populated/popular areas, but, I'm happy with it at least.

I'll never reconsider Sony's A7 or A7R or any of their successors so long as this kind of garbage persists. What a terrible way to ruin a camera with such potential. Of course, this is hardly the only issue to arise, but, to me, it seems to be the one that has no excuse. It's the one that shows a lack of respect for the type of photographer who would even consider these high end cameras. And it's the sort of thing you never see in Canon or Nikon high end cameras which is part of the reason they retain such a large amount of trust compared to Sony.

Nothing reaffirms my confidence in my gear choices than making a nice healthy sized print out of the images that were made with said gear. In this case I ordered 2 16"x24" prints from Bay Photo. One was a print of a file "straight out of the camera" from the X-E1 and the other from the X-E2. They both look amazingly good despite the pure resolution of the sensor in these cameras being a little short for a really high fidelity 16x24 print.

I'm very much a digital age human and do the vast majority of my visual art, both creating and observing, via screens of various sorts. But, even I can appreciate that there is something special about hanging up a big old high quality print of something you consider a success for everyone to see.

All the more impressive to me is just how fantastic these look without any post processing at all. Not even within the camera itself.... more »

Now I will own two Olympus OM lenses. Hm. If someone wanted to donate me a quality OM-4 I would even consider exposing some film to some photons within its cavity via these lenses. But, so far, I can't convince myself to pay actual money for an old manual film camera, particularly when most I see at a decent price appear to have been dunked in water and rubbed vigorously by a bear.

So, about the X-T1...

As I mentioned earlier, I had a chance to play with one today. Honestly, it wasn't for long. Maybe 20 minutes and it was inside a store and the only lens that was on it the whole time was the 10-24mm. (and real quick aside, I was so interested in the camera itself, I failed to pay much attention at all to that lens. I was fine with its size. I'm really tired of people thumping on the idea that every single aspect of a mirrorless camera has to be as tiny as humanly possible. Ridiculous. Anyway...).

There's not a lot to say that hasn't been said all over the place, but, I'll clarify a couple of things.

First, I want to say that the EVF was shockingly large. I had not expected it. In magnification terms, a tiny difference in the numbers can really come out as an impressive difference visually. It was like looking through peephole... more »
