So I just saw +Yonatan Zunger mentioned in a bump on [Adult Swim].

I'm pretty sure there's no higher honor.

So... congrats, Yonatan. You've made it.

Other than a few small niches (Android nerds, photography nerds), this service has never taken off well. Just a snapshot on my way home from chilling at a campground in Big Cottonwood Canyon here in Utah. Oh and hi, it has been a while since I last posted anything. G+ has been feeling pretty dead for me for a while now. You might want to catch my posts elsewhere, like this same image on 500px:

One Moon, Two Shots

One taken with $3000 worth of gear and the other taken with $430 worth.

Of course, the real differences are apparent when viewed at large magnification and it's no contest. Still, kind of a good demonstration of diminishing returns in photography equipment these days, and never mind the price difference. Consider the massive... mass difference. That $3000 gear set is about 15 times greater volume and significantly heavier.

New lens day is a good day.

Sony FE 28mm F2

Here we have one of the all time best lens values in modern photography equipment. Seriously. A lens this cheap and tiny has no business being as good as it is. Does it have serious distortion and zoom-like bokeh? Sure, but, it's razor sharp, and tiny, and cheap. Value. Plus, the bokeh is probably actually better than any zoom I've seen in this range, and all of the other flaws are corrected automatically by software. In fact, the lens is truly 26mm to make up for the field of view loss from correcting the distortion. Plus, the distortion is simple barrel which means contrast is increased in the frame, not decreased due to squishing instead of stretching to fix the flaw.

Anyway, if you're shooting Sony E-mount full frame, this lens should be owned by you.

This hobby is so sticky. ~6 months ago I didn't even have a system camera anymore. I just used an RX100 III and an RX10 in concert; that worked okay. Xmas was coming, though, and I knew I'd want that sweet, sweet bokeh. I thought, "okay fine, I'll get that nice new Sony A7 II and one lens, 55/1.8, great bokeh and general shooter, then maybe 1-2 lenses each year and live with that."

Hah. Right.

Fast forward to about a week from now and my camera gear outlay will be something like

- Sony A7 II
- Sony FE 55mm ƒ/1.8 Zeiss
- Sony FE 16-35 ƒ/4 Zeiss
- Sony FE 70-200mm ƒ/4 G
- Sony FE 28mm ƒ/2
- Canon FD 100mm ƒ/2 (+ Metabones adapter)
- Tamron 150-600mm SP Di etc. whatever + LA-EA4 adapter.

... *sigh*

I'll probably sell that Canon 100mm lens. That should even things out...

Great match for the camera. Canon nFD 100mm f/2. It gives a little bit of CA wide open but only in contrasty areas. Quite usable thanks to IBIS. Fairly portable and compact.

Sony A7 II + Canon FD 135mm F2

Took this fine pairing out for a roll in the city today. Brought home a number of keepers. Still not a huge fan of manual focus, but, it is certainly better on the A7 II than last cameras I have used.

If curious, see a few results posted to my flickr account (shots from 3/9/15): http://flic.kr/zacheryjensen

Gasp! I did wildlife. It has been a while. This is really just a selection from a series of lens tests to make sure everything is working (and get an idea of how it renders) but, I kinda like it.

The Sony A7 II + Tamron SP 150-600mm F/5-6.3 Di USD is a surprisingly workable combo.

This mall is closed on Sunday. Good for me, I guess. I took a new lens out for its first "real" use in the outdoors and have to say, I'm pleased. So far, I'm quite happy with Sony's new FE 16-35mm F4 OSS lens for full frame E-mount cameras.

Leasing

http://500px.com/photo/76203889/leasing-by-zachery-jensen?from=user_library

So, I kinda feel like sometimes photography is more fun with simpler compact cameras. Granted, I use the mother of all compacts, the RX100M3, but, still. It is what it is. My thoughts were certainly more focused on what to photograph than what to photograph it with. Light wasn't cooperative on this day, but, hey, I found a new spot to visit when it comes out to play again.

Two Thirty-six Megapixel Cameras

But, which is which? Can you tell? I found a screamingly great deal on a Sony A7R. So, I decided to do some comparing of my own. I didn't like the image quality coming out of the A7 for a handful of reasons. Some of those are bound to still apply to the A7R in some situations, but, it was the whole pile that got me with the A7.

I can tell you that I am already significantly more impressed by the A7R's image quality. And that shutter noise? Totally overblown. Yes it's longer. Just sounds like the first gen NEX cameras. No big deal. AF feels like NEX-7 to me, maybe a little faster. I loved the NEX-7.

Anyway, this comparison was made with the same lens. Admittedly, adapted on the A7R versus the other camera. But it shouldn't matter as the crops come from near the center of the frame. Can you tell which is which?

Since you can't rely on the website or app to reproduce the image at 1:1 ratio, or even to avoid horribly compressing it, there's a link here to the full thing as well.

Support Aneutronic Fusion-based Energy Production

This group is doing great work and could really use some support for the last mile effort this year!

We're talking a very viable form of energy generation by way of aneutronic fusion (focus fusion). A vastly simpler system that directly converts the output of the reactor into electricity without a complicated heat generation -> turbine cycle involved. No waste at all. No neutrons generated. Just sweet, sweet electricity. Harnessed lightning.

These guys are small and independent. It would be excellent to see a breakthrough come from pure science and entrepreneurship unencumbered by the taint of huge, blind government funding *cough* ITER *cough*

So get in there and push a little.

You Already Knew This Was Coming if you had even once lifted your head above the meagre and compartmentalized G+ "crowd."

Other than a few small niches (Android nerds, photography nerds), this service has never taken off well. Many people revile it for Google's effort to cram it down the throat of everyone using their other services. Of course, that is the only way they could get their artificially inflated usage statistics that are totally ridiculous and not at all represented by reality. But hey... do no evil right?

Anyway, not that I care, I've posted here quite a lot. I get a few hundred views or more on most posts. Clearly I have someone looking. But the reality is, most people come here, see it isn't facebook or twitter or tumblr and walk right back out.

If you've been feeling a little icy in these parts, I wouldn't fault your for taking your leave now, especially with this indicator on full brightness. Just keep in mind that many of us use other services, sometimes more interestingly. My personal site is really a tumblr at http://ztj.io/ though I mostly link to pic uploads there. I am always meaning to use it a little more. We'll see. I tweet as well, and you'd also see notices of new images going up on 500px or Flickr there http://twitter.com/_ztj

I also use Facebook a little but, I don't do much "public" stuff there. It's mostly for friends/family and a single signon service besides Google that offers two factor authentication (yea ironic that FB offers a security improvement when dealing with authentication, but, it's true.)

Interesting article, anyway, assuming it's true. I think it would benefit Google to give up on Orkut Mk. II and refocus on powering other more creative, design-capable endeavors from around the web.... or something. Anything, really. FB and Twitter see success because of measured synergy. G+ has been so closed. It really represents a heralding of anti-openness from Google if you think about it. Never would they post any meaningful integration API, never would they let you post content directly from other services. Twitter lets you produce cards to integrate right into their stream, FB has its apps. Google completely misjudged the value of federation of content. It's the whole basis of success for its competition.___

Haze in the Valley at Twilight

Honestly, I just didn't end up anywhere I especially wanted to for a photo tonight, but, I really wanted to take one. In particular, I wanted to generate some sweet, sweet, detail porn with my D800. Obviously, you won't get the full experience if you're into that on Google+. You'll be better served over here, on Flickr where you can see the actual original JPEG upload if you want: https://www.flickr.com/photos/zacheryjensen/13961712873/

It's also on 500px where you could buy a print if it really tickled your fancy: http://500px.com/photo/67736433/haze-in-the-valley-at-twilight-by-zachery-jensen

Anyway, my favorite thing about this image is, despite the haze in the valley, I can read some of the signs that are actually miles away. I really like high resolution cameras.

It's not about making an image nobody else has ever made. It's about making one that you have never made. It's not about saying something unique. It is enough to say it again, in your own way. Then, your work is uniquely personal. But, don't go looking for what makes you stand out. Just do things the way you feel they should be done. Speak with your own accent naturally. Personality is a quality of art that is so subtle that searching for it deliberately in your own work will smother it. You will only be lost so long as you seek your self.

…or something like that.

Will Google Hangouts ever not be terrible?

Firstly, there is no native Mac client (nor Windows, but, I can't sincerely care about that). This makes zero sense. There are iPad and iPhone clients. You have to be basically the worst developer ever to not share the majority of your code between a Mac and iOS app. It can't be more than a few days work to write a UI for a Mac version of the iOS app, especially for Google. Their UI's are universally awful particularly at launch so the expectations are already low.

AND

- I'm sitting here on the Google+ page and I know for a fact there is an incoming message from someone in a hangout that I have not yet seen. I just got the notification on my phone. Yet there is no indicator whatsoever on this page that there is such a message waiting. Nothing.

Eventually, and with seemingly no relationship to anything important (like timeliness) a chat window will eventually pop up if that person continues to send messages.

Google, you built G+ by ripping off facebook left and right. Why stop now? Facebook chat works better than this. That's pretty sad (but not surprising.)

And get us native clients. The web is still a terrible application platform and will be for another decade at least. If you can't be arsed to port the iOS client to the Mac App Store with even exactly the same UI, at least open the proper APIs so someone can write their own client.___

Well, probably steel. Or aluminum. Whatever. Steel is the coolest sounding typical metal for a title :P

Borg Cube has Landed ... in Salt Lake City, apparently.

I mean sure, it's purportedly a new federal courthouse. But I swear... take a walk around this monolith and you may be concerned about uninvited assimilation taking place.

One of these days I'll have to head down here with a proper architecture setup and do this place the ominous justice it deserves.

Springtime Cliché

Well, we can't resist all of the cliché images, can we? We may not get (much of) the sakura over here, but, we get... something. Something that smells odd and honestly, I imagine it's some kind of fruit tree, but, I'm sure this particular tree never actually produces any notable fruits. Maybe it's apricots? Plums?

When I was a kid my grandmother would sing me this song about apricot trees at seemingly random times (we had a blossoming tree at her home, but, it was apples, not apricots) which went something like...

I looked out the window, and what did I see?
Popcorn popping on the apricot tree!
Spring had brought me such a nice surprise,
Blossoms popping right before my eyes.
I could take an armful and make a treat,
A popcorn ball that would smell so sweet.
It wasn't really so, but it seemed tob... more »

Small White Flowers

The first time I had a D800, it wasn't the sheer detail that first left me seriously impressed. In fact, it was the way it rendered the clear blue sky so beautifully with smoother tonal transitions and less visible noise than any other digital camera I had seen yet.

It was a photograph similar to this one in which I first noticed this attribute, actually. This one http://www.flickr.com/photos/zacheryjensen/7468401640/
