Thousands of families in the southern Philippines are still homeless after a tropical storm described as an ‘inland tsunami' devastated the region last month. Recently Oxfam was able to make life a little easier for some 7,000 families displaced by the storm, by providing them with versatile Muslim blankets called malongs. Not just for keeping warm, cradling infants and sleeping on, the malong can also be used to store and purify water. Considering the lack of adequate sanitation in many of the storm shelters, this water-cleaning blanket has the potential to literally save lives.

Nestle, the biggest food producer in the world, continues its anti-union practices. In October the Nescafe factory in Panjang, Indonesia fired nearly two-thirds of its unionised workers, who battled for five years to gain recognition for their independent trade union before finally achieving their goal in March. Nestle fired the 53 workers in response to a deadlocked wage dispute; last year, the company’s net profit was USD $35 billion.

It’s World AIDS Day, and across the world 4,900 people will die today because they have AIDS. Another 7,100 will become infected with HIV. But it’s not all doom and gloom; world leaders now say that an AIDS-free generation is possible. And the treatment numbers are encouraging: In Sub-Saharan Africa, 3.9 million people are receiving antiretroviral treatment (ARVs).
