Susanne Ramharter88,395Am Freitag, dem 16.8. kommt +Michael Lee Johnson nach Wien. Michael unternimmt soeben dabei wildes (wahnsinniges?)

China Visa Problems & The Possibility of Plan Changes.

OK. So it’s official. I can’t get a visa for China with a duration of more than 30 or 60 days, because the visa situation changed on September 1st whilst I was in Athens… That sucks because I need to be in China for over 1 year, so I can begin my 15,000km walk from Beijing to London whilst raising money for charity…

Yes. I knew this was going be a possibility. The visa situation changes all the time. Hindsight is a late teacher, but a bitch nevertheless. I could have got a 1 year multiple entry business visa without much difficulty if I would have applied for the visa before I got to Athens. Shit happens unfortunately.

There are currently 6 solutions I can see:

1) Leave China every 30 or 60 days, apply for a new visa and then return to where I left off.
2) Wing it and hope forthe bes... more »

This Is Why Google+ Is The Best Social Network On The Internet...

For the past 6 weeks, I have been travelling across the world for FREE using nothing but Google+ and the people of this community.

I have stayed at many peoples houses, in hotels and bed and breakfasts. Travelled across countries via cars, buses and trains.

I have met lots of amazing people, enjoyed home-cooked meals, foreign wine and mouth-watering ice-cream. I have partied on boats and danced with locals. I have learnt different languages and I have experienced new cultures. I was even given a free Chromebook when I visited the Google+ Hamburg office, awesome right?

So far I have been to London, Paris, Amsterdam, Harderwijk, Emsdetten, Munster, Hamburg, Berlin, Munich, Zurich, Milan, Austria, Hungary, Serbia, Bulgaria and Athens. And I will be flying out to Mumbai hopefully later next... more »

Awesome! I got my visa for India... Now I can book my flight to Mumbai and continue with the Google+ Social Travel Experiment.

So far I have been to France, The Nederlands, Germany, Italy, Austria, Hungary, Serbia, Bulgaria and Greece. I have stayed at many peoples houses, in hotels and bed and breakfasts. Travelled across countries via cars, buses and trains.

I was just about to get an Indian visa whilst I was in Athens, take a ferry over to Turkey, travel up to Istanbul and then jump on a flight to Mumbai, however, things didn't go according to plan.

Unfortunately I had problems getting an Indian visa due to a ripped page in my passport, which meant I could either try and stay in Athens for 4 weeks until the embassy issued me a new one, and then reapply for the indian visa, or I could jump on a flight back to the UK and resolve all of my issues here.

This is an open letter to  +Emirates

Thank you for all of your help and support, as well as upgrading my ticket to business class on my flight from India. It was genuinely appreciated. You turned a bad day into a better day, and for that I will be forever grateful.

I got to the airport in a taxi from the hotel, and right from the very beginning, a wheelchair was provided to me and I was pushed around the airport and onto the plane. There was someone waiting for me when I got off the plane and they helped me with all of my baggage and took good care of me. I wouldn't have got home without the help of your team. -- Thank you. From the bottom of my heart. Thank you.

I am safe, sound and back in the UK (at the moment) I had an accident due to stupidity. I forgot I wasn't superman. This is the first day I have had full internet access to update you all.

Saturday 19th (my first day on foot) may have been the most difficult day of my life, but  (Monday 21st) was definitely the most painful. Between sun-burn, calf-burn and foot covered blisters, roadside diarrhoea and mosquito bites on my bum, crawling 3km on my knees and getting woke-up by cops, I was in plenty of pain and now I am unable to walk.

This post is what I wrote when I got to the hotel (but the internet wasn't working properly) for me to upload it. I will write more today about what's happened at the hospital and how I got back to England.

Day 1 – On Foot & Free - The Hardest Day Of My Life

Between a fisherman throwing rocks at me and trying to steal my bag, sand encrusted blisters, chafage and dehydration, salt-water drenched electronics and being in the front seat of an emotional roller-coaster for the majority of the day, there was a lot I had to overcome, more specifically, a lot I had to deal with that I had never had to deal with before… I even had the occasional ‘white devil’ comment hurled in my direction.

Michael Lee Johnson’s Walk Kanyakumari to London | Overcoming Challenges
http://exploringindiaonfoot.tumblr.com/post/64139766565/michael-lee-johnsons-walk-kanyakumari-to-london

I had the privilege of being   first host in India, During his brief stay of around a week in Mumbai, while he acclimatized himself, we hung out (http://goo.gl/J20IIN) and talked about his impending journey. We were joined by (http://revivallife.wordpress.com), an eminent psychotherapist and counsellor, to discuss challenges that Michael would face during his long 3+ years walk (http://goo.gl/TVe6fZ). The discussion turned out to be pretty interesting and Dimple offered him some pertinent tips to manage the adventure.

Prior to and even during the hangout Michael had been constantly referring to the culture shock. So to overcome issues related to this “culture shock” Dimple had these few tips to offer.

Since he was going to travel through many different countries he was advised to read up on these countries and gather as much information about the people, their life style, food and travelling. Basically the idea was to get to be prepared as much as possible while recognizing the fact that any amount of preparation would never be enough.

She laid special emphasis on his travel plans viz:
- getting his directions right
- finalizing the route that he would need to take. Seeking help of locals in the selection of the route.
- Using the net to connect with people who would like to meet with him on his trip. Basically getting as familiar as he could about his walking directions
- knowing where to take his halts with special emphasis on gathering information about the terrain, the people, food place of stay, climate, legal aspects and the works

Being prepared with all the above would help eliminate the culture shock to a large extent.

Having addressed the culture shock aspect I was more keen that we delve into the psychological aspects of his entire excursion and issues which would be hitting him.

The single most important point that Dimple picked on was the physical pain that he would feel from walking endlessly while constantly carrying the heavy gear on his back and shoulders. She was of the opinion that culture shock and pain would really stress him out and the stress would aggravate the physical pain even further. Hence regularly relaxing the body and mind along with medication were of primary importance as it would help deal with the pain and stress.

She recommended “chanting” or solving mind puzzles while walking to take the mind away from the drudgery of the monotonous walk. These activities work wonders in taking the focus of the mind away from the body

Another very important consideration she had to offer was being very flexible with his route planning and duration of travel. Rather than focussing on the laborious walk, she recommended breaking the journey down into smaller and immediately achievable goals of 2-3 days. She also recommended rewarding himself on completing the small goals as a way of keeping the momentum going.

Another important aspect that she highlighted was to find something that would really comfort him,  like food or talking to a friend.
Ever since Michael landed in Mumbai, Michael was immensely disturbed dealing with trolls on the internet.  A lot of people following his journey were trying to discourage him.  Each morning that he would wake up, there were a huge number of negative messages / posts berating and ridiculing him. Being an introvert, dealing with this issue was a tremendous effort for Michael as the chain of negative thoughts were doing more harm than good. Dimple suggested that he replace each negative thought with two positive ones while repeating them looking in a mirror, thereby building on his confidence.

I also offered my own opinion to keep the trolls away as undoubtedly they would be envious of his trip. Infact Michael agreed that for every 50-100 negative persons there were more than thousands who were very encouraging.

The hangout ended on a very good note and I dare say that Dimple Shah’s contributon was extremely useful. And I would thoroughly recommend her (being an extremely competent psychotherapy and relationship building professional) services to anyone. They dont get any better than her.

We wish Michael all the very best in his adventure walk. We would love to hear from you as a listener what other measures that Michael should take to minimize the challenges in this marathon journey of his. Leave your suggestions in the comments below.

In regards to adventures and what I have learnt so far; Before you begin, the anxiety kicks in. Your heart skips a beat and you start to feel the heat. Don't let it get to you. Don't let it deceive you. Don't let it manifest, take over and control you. Just do it. Go out and live. The only thing worst than starting, is not starting. Be all you can be. Be all you want to be. Life is for living, so go out and live it. But don't live it because I say so. Live it because you want to. Live it because everything in your body makes you feel like you have to.

Checkout my first blog post about my walk from India to London.

Throughout my journey, there are multiple mountains for me to cross and walk around, uncharted deserts and inhospitable places to cross. I have uranium mines in Kazakhstan to maneuver around. Wolfs, bears, leopards and tigers to tame. Government officials and corrupt military to bribe, taliban to watch out for and anti-whites to avoid. The weather ranges from +40 to -40, and there is a good possibility that I will be kidnapped and held hostage, or possibly even shot dead on location.

Awesome! I just got nominated by +Adam Simmons to receive the new +HP Chromebook from Google.

7 days left. 992 Chromebook's to go. Who will you nominate? The more nominations I get, the better the chances I have of winning.

What will I do with my current one? I will give it to a child that needs it at one point along my journey.

Tell your friends. Tell your family. Help me keep safe. My journey is my message and you are my medium.

From India to London I will walk. Living my dream. 15,000km, continent to continent - breaking down borders, barriers and beliefs.

I am just a normal person, just like you. I am not courageous, nor am I brave, but whenever I am walking, I feel like I am free... And that freedom is what motivates me. What drives me. What I so desperately seek. - It's why I stepped outside of my comfort zone to be everything that I could be. To follow my dream. My heart. To create my own path in this maze of perpetual uncertainties.

The next 3 years are going to get crazy.

Stay tuned. Michael Lee Johnson - Over and out.

I should be starting my walk any day now. (I am starting to feel much better).

NOTICE:

I should have been starting my walk from India to London tomorrow (Monday 7th), but I am still in Bangalore and I haven't got to Kanyakumari yet. (I am still weak / can't stand up for longer than 30 minutes).

Damn flu. (At least it's not Maleria) I should be starting any day now. I am just waiting until I have recovered properly, because I would collapse otherwise. I am just too weak to move.

I ventured out to pizza hut today. It was a nice change. I have been stuck in this apartment for the past week. The light hurts and so does my head.

I am definitely getting better. So 2/3 days tops by the looks of things.

On Foot & Free. - Kanyakumari, India to London, England. 15,000km (APX). 3 years. Solo.

Whenever I am walking, I feel like I am free. Free to ponder. Free to roam. Free to wander without societal restraints. Free to think and do as I choose. Free to live and sleep where I please.

For the next 3 years I am going to be walking from India to London.

This is the route I am going to be taking for the first year. (Kanyakumari to Kashmir). I am going to be following the west Indian coastline (beach to beach and staying in my tent)... Thing's are probably going to get a little crazy.

Stepping outside of your comfort zone is difficult, real difficult. But life is for living, and live it I will. No longer can I sit in front of the computer all day.

For the past 5 days or so whilst I have been staying in #Bangalore with +Nayan Ambali , I have been pretty ill. In fact, in all honesty, I thought I had Malaria, but it turned out I didn't. I received my blood test back today. I am all clear. (You can stop worrying now mum, I AM OK).

Turns out I just had some sort of Indian flu. I am still feeling pretty weak, but Nayan and his house mates / work colleagues have been looking after me. Without them, things would have been difficult. Real difficult. I should be OK to start my walk on Monday as planned, and I am now excited to get started...

I hope I stop feeling weak soon. It's driving me bat-shit CRAZY!

Dear Google+ Please help. I need you more than I have ever needed you.

For the past 2 years, I have been obsessively planning and training for my walk from Beijing to London. It was a dream of mine. Something I have always wanted to do.

I am now in India (as you know) and (I currently have the flu, but getting over it) I couldn't get a visa for China due to visa changes whilst I was in Athens, so I decided to walk 15,000km home from India instead... Which should be starting on Monday 7th...in just a couple of days time.

Walking from Beijing - was the dream - my childhood dream - and now that I have had lots of free time on my hands, I find myself questioning myself. questioning everything. I find myself unhappy, more than I should be. A LOT MORE. The last time I felt TRULY happy was when I was at home, or in Athens (because it feels like home).

I have always wanted to walk home from Beijing, and this new plan of mine, to walk home from India, is eating at me. I am not sure if its just nerves, or the fact - walking home from India is not my dream, it's just a backup plan because I didn't want to let you all down.

What's your thoughts?

India is beautiful, and the people are amazing. Everyone has been so hospitable, it's unreal... But I find myself questioning everything. IS IT WHAT I SHOULD BE DOING? IS THIS REALLY FOR ME?

I am stuck in 2 minds and it's hurting my head. What should I do?

Please help.___

I quit my job to follow my dream, and now I am going to get paid for it…

Ever since I was younger, I wanted to do something special. Real special. Some people go backpacking across Europe or travel the American West by train. Other people head to Australia or Bangkok, and sometimes even Spain. I ended up doing what most people do – going to school, getting a job, and getting stuck in life. A life that I didn’t like, but became accustomed to. It was a good job, it paid the bills, but I felt like I would have to give up my dream of an incredible journey – my childhood dream. I was actually getting to where I was OK with it. Where I was ready to give up on my dream and not follow through.

Lots of people have to give up their dreams and settle for the life they fall into. A job they don’t like, but do anyway. – No longer could I do that. I needed to follow my dream. Myheart. I ne... more »

Lots of people have to give up their dreams and settle for the life they fall into. A job they don’t like, but do anyway. – No longer could I do that. I needed to follow my dream. My heart. I needed to go. Unfortunately I had to quit my job last year, so I could prepare for my dream of an incredible journey.

I managed to save up about $19,000, but after living expenses, rent and bills, etc, that was quickly reduced to $11,363. I only need around $10,000, so this amount wasn’t a problem.

On july 26th, I was meant to be boarding a flight to Beijing, so I could begin my journey. What journey is that? Well…

I was going to walk 15,000km over the duration of 3 years from Beijing to London, whilst raising money for Unicef and living my dream, however, a couple of days before I was meant to leave. I had a crazy idea… I wanted to see if it was possible to travel to Beijing for free, using nothing but Google+ and the goodwill of this community. I wanted to see if people believed in me. If people cared.

Was it possible? Yes. Well, it would have been, that’s for certain.. However, after having a number of problems (visa issues mainly) I have now stopped in India and won’t be heading to Beijing.

For the past 8 weeks, I have been travelling across the world for FREE using nothing but Google+ and the people of this community.

I have stayed at many peoples houses, in hotels and bed and breakfasts. Travelled across countries via cars, buses and trains.

I have been to London, Paris, Amsterdam, Harderwijk, Emsdetten, Munster, Hamburg, Berlin, Munich, Zurich, Milan, Austria, Hungary, Serbia, Bulgaria, Athens, Mumbai & Bangalore

People from all over Google+ came together to help me. They restored my faith in humanity and my love for society. They showed me they cared and they made me feel welcome.

As I am writing this message, I am still in Bangalore, getting over an illness (I thought I had Maleria, turned out I didn't) and preparing to head down to Kanyakumari (The southern tip of India). - Where I will be begin my walk back home to London, England, instead…

I am going to follow the west indian coast, beach to beach for the next 6 months until my visa runs out, and then I will decide what to do from then on.

...When a travel company called ‘Tripsta’ heard what I was doing. They phoned me up and asked me all sorts of questions, and after I had finished answering the questions… They said ‘Michael! We want to sponsor you. We would like to pay you to walk from India to London, so you have more money, and more freedom of  choice. Why? Because they believed in me, just like you did. They wanted me to experience the cross-cultural travel differentiations properly (and report on them a couple of times a month).

You can visit their website over at http://www.tripsta.co.uk, or for more information drop me a message. I have met all of the team and they are pretty awesome (or I wouldn't have agreed for them to sponsor me).

I am now going to bring my dream to life and let the whole world dream with me… and  it’s going to be even more awesome because I am now backed by an international travel company with offices all over the world, who are pretty much paying me to have a whole range of awesome experiences during my walk.

My official start date is: Monday October 7th 2013 and I am going to dedicate the majority of my time to raising money for Unicef.

- Michael Lee Johnson. Over and out. Stay tuned for more information over the course of the next couple of days.___

2) Wing it and hope for the best. (the best being a 30 day extension on my 30 or 60 day visa, the worst being sent back to the UK).
3). Pay for 12 months worth of tuition & 12 months worth of accommodation, and then lie to the police about my motives of being in the country.
4) Find a job in China, get a drivers license, a residency permit, pay for accommodation and then disappear for a year (bearing in mind; what I am doing is 100% public)
5) Not give up. Walk from the southern tip of India. It’s the same distance. The same duration. + the weather and scenery is a whole lot nicer.
6) Give up completely and go home.

What do you think I should do?  I am thinking I should walk from India to London - which would start in about 10 days time.___

We seem to take people for granted that are in our life each day... I miss my friends & family, and even more so, my dog.

When I initially started my social travel experiment, I was happy to get away. In all honesty, I didn’t take them into consideration. I forgot about the people that were important to me. The people that were always around.

When I was back in the UK it was great to spend time with them… I just wish I told them I loved them more and how much they meant to me.

Before I left I had to weigh up whether or not I should leave because I may not to get to see my nan again (due to her age), or possibly anyone for that matter (if I didn’t make it back). It was a tough call, but I left anyway.

The last 24 hours.

Everyone has problems, but not everyone is unhappy. It’s how you deal with them that matter… And I haven’t been dealing with them very well unfortunately.

The last 24 hours have been difficult. Real difficult. From the moment I arrived at Heathrow airport, things didn’t feel right. I couldn’t think straight and I started to question myself. I saw red. I felt sick. I couldn't stand up properly. I couldn't eat. Every emotion you could possibly imagine just leaped right up outside of my head and smacked me in the face. Everything in my body was telling me to give up. To go home. To call my mum (I did, and then I felt like crying).

It would have been easy for me to give up and go home, but I didn’t. After questioning myself thousands of times, I eventually boarded the flight and I am now in Mumbai staying with the great +Vinit Bolinjkar and his wife, preparing for the next part of my adventure.

Don't forget: Bring your dreams to life and let the whole world dream with you. Happiness is better shared than endured alone.___

How can you help?

Do you have somewhere I could stay for a couple of days, or maybe you know someone that does, Could you drive me from one place to the next, or maybe you know someone that could? Can you take me on an adventure, or maybe you know someone that can? Can you show me the real India, the India nobody gets to see? Can you pay for my train ticket to my next destination, or possibly even a bus ticket? Can you teach me something new or help me experience something great?

Anything you can do to help me whilst I am in India, would be greatly appreciated. Please share this post and tell your friends I am coming.

If you haven’t been following my journey so far, for the past 6 weeks, I have been travelling across the world using nothing but Google+ and the people of this community. I have stayed at many peoples houses, in hotels and bed and breakfasts. Travelled across countries via cars, buses and trains.

So far I have been to France, The Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Austria, Hungary, Serbia, Bulgaria and Greece. I was just about to get an Indian visa whilst I was in Athens, take a ferry over to Turkey, travel up to Istanbul and then jump on a flight to Mumbai, however, things didn’t go according to plan.

I had problems getting a visa for India due to a ripped page in my passport, which meant I could either try and stay in Athens for 4 weeks until the embassy issued me a new one, and then reapply for the indian visa, or I could jump on a flight back to the UK and resolve all of my issues here.

I couldn’t find somewhere to stay in Athens for 4 weeks, so I crowd-funded my flight back to the UK, and now I am ready to start again…

Where’s next after india?

Sri Lanka
Kuala Lumpur
Bangkok
Manila
Taiwan
Hong Kong
Beijing

For those of you that don't know what I am doing... Over the course of the next 3 years, I am going to be walking 15,000km from Beijing to London, whilst doing live Google+ hangouts from one side of the world to the other, raising money for Unicef and recording a documentary about my use of Google+ over the entire duration.

On Friday July 26th, I was meant to be boarding a flight to Hong Kong with the intention of heading up to Beijing on the train, and then I had an idea...

Why not make this journey a little more interesting. Why not make it more about you, and less about me. Inviting you into my journey. Inviting you to take part. And instead of getting on a flight direct to Hong Kong, why not ditch my plane ticket and social-travel all the way using nothing but Google+ and the goodwill of this community… So I can show that to the world...

I decided to do Google's job for them, by taking it upon myself to show the world that #GooglePlusIsNotAGhostTown and why this platform is different than all of the others. I was just sick and tired of all those news articles and people saying that nobody uses this platform. That nobody is here.

If nobody is here... Who am I? Who are you? And why is Google+ so awesome?

The Rules? (slightly updated)

I only have 4 rules to follow during my time in India

1: I can only accept offers of food, water, travel or accommodation from people on Google+.
2: I can not accept cash from members of the Google+ community or anyone else.
3: I can not spend money on anything other than food or water
4: I must drink tea with at least 25 different people.___

So far I have been to London, Paris, Amsterdam, Harderwijk, Emsdetten, Munster, Hamburg, Berlin, Munich, Zurich, Milan, Austria, Hungary, Serbia, Bulgaria and Athens. And I will be flying out to Mumbai hopefully later next week.

People from all over Google+ have come together to help me. They have restored my faith in humanity. My love for society. They have showed me they cared and they have made me feel welcome.

None of this would be possible without Google+. ___

This is an open letter to everyone that has helped make my Google+ social travel experiment successful so far…

Dear Friends.

(For the people that invited me into their homes)

Although our paths have now parted and our roads are so distant, I will always remember how you have helped me, and I will always remember your support.

I am thankful for everything you have done for me. I am thankful for the time we spent together. I am thankful for the conversations we shared, and I am thankful for the memories we made.

I will never forget you. I hope we one day meet again.

I couldn’t find somewhere to stay in Athens for 4 weeks, so I crowd-funded my flight back to the UK and now I have applied for my new passport to continue with my journey. I should be flying out to Mumbai later on in the week (once my Indian visa arrives).

For those of you that don't know what I am doing... I am currently social travelling my way to Beijing, visiting as many countries and people as possible, and then once I arrive in Beijing I am going to walk 15,000km back to London over the duration of 3 years. - Whilst doing live Google+ hangouts, writing a book, raising money for Unicef and recording a documentary about my use of Google+.
