"...the 1970s such people remember as a cautionary tale bears little resemblance to the 1970s that actually happened.
In elite mythology, the origins of the crisis of the 70s, like the supposed origins of our current crisis, lay in excess: too much debt, too much coddling of those slovenly proles via a strong welfare state. The suffering of 1979-82 was necessary payback.
None of that is remotely true."

I just found out the hard way that GTalk on Android has been silently replaced by Hangouts and the do-no-evil geniuses have removed everything dealing with XMPP from it ... everything
The "hard way" is from the fact that I did not get a server alert on my phone because Hangouts no longer supports outside messages from XMPP sources (also known as Federation.)
This has me all worked up in a lot of ways:
Personally - a lot of my friends are XMPP users so now I no longer have a single client for my messaging needs and this means that GTalk will not be my primary tool, heck I may not load it at all now.
Professionally - I'm a member of the XMPP Software Foundation and we have been very proud about XMPP being the core of a lot of commercial communication products (Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Cisco and many others) and even tho each... more »

Later in the evening at The English Ale in Mylor, a processing takes the horned god to the burning of the wicker man. Yup, it was kind of like that.

Interview with Salim Ismail, founding director of Singularity University. Society's major institutions are designed for the world of 100 years ago -- so we're in for a lot of disruption.

This device is sure to provoke controversy, but it doesn't seem fundamentally novel to me: rather, it's the compact, portable version of something we've seen for years in naval point gunnery systems such as AEGIS and PHALANX. Basically, this is an almost entirely automated gunnery platform: you look through the scope and select a target, and pull the trigger to tell it to fire on its own mark; then it waits for a clean shot and takes it. A first-time shooter can reliably hit targets at a range of 500 yards, which is no big surprise, since the shooter isn't actually doing much of the work at all: this is an automated gun system.
Thinking of this in the range of applications: for hunting as a sport, it kind of defeats the purpose of the "sport" aspect. (Especially if you added just a bit more logic to help it identify deer or whatever on its own, and just ping the operator... more »

Listening to a song, and you don't know what it is? Start a voice search on Android, say "What's this song?", and your phone will do the rest.

All the grumbling about the change to the interface sounds exactly like what happens when Facebook changes their UI.
'Grats GOOG, you've made it!

A Microsoft server accesses URLs sent in Skype chat messages, even if they are HTTPS URLs and contain account information. A reader of Heise publications notified Heise Security (link to German website, Google translation). They replicated the observation by sending links via Skype, including one to a private file storage account, and found that these URLs are shortly after accessed from a Microsoft IP address. When confronted, Microsoft claimed that this is part of an effort to detect and filter spam and phishing URLs.

Apparently willpower has a budget; making lots of decisions leads to decision fatigue, where you either make impulsive decisions or avoid decisions (take the default), but wont use a good analytical thought process. And that in turn is related directly to glucose levels.
Now I want a subcutaneous glucose monitor with bluetooth (ble?) so my phone can tell me when I'm likely to make poor decisions.

The curious path of the Laryngeal Nerve: It was God wot dun it!
I saw the news that +Larry Page is suffering from vocal cord paralysis. If you want to know more about that, you should go check his informative post where he reveals he's made a contribution towards research. Avoiding doing work on a complicated phonetics assignments, I had a quick look at the condition and quickly ran into this oddity. The laryngeal nerve in mammals doesn't go where you'd expect, or rather half of it doesn't. Rather it branches off the vagus nerve that heads to the heart and other organs, looping under the aortic arch. So apparently as a consequence, it's not uncommon for heart surgery to result in voice impairment by damaging the nerve.
How strange, I thought. Given one half of the nerve function to our voice box goes directly to the brain via the superior laryngeal nerve, ho... more »

A bit more space music by +Chris Hadfield, singing with the Bare Naked Ladies. Beautiful voice. I might be becoming a fan!

Commander Chris Hadfield sings Major Tom Space Oddity, with a clip made aboard the ISS. Wow.
I'm a huge snob about voice. Hadfield has a beautiful tenor voice, really nails it.
Anyone who loved golden age SF, this'll bring a tear to your eye.

I've never noticed this before - I could have gone my entire life without ever knowing this. Commander Riker does not know how to use a chair properly.
The human brain has this amazing ability to filter out the bizarre. Bigfoot could walk by your window right now and you probably wouldn't notice because your brain just doesn't have time for that shit.
Here’s another example — I've watched every episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation (several times) and I never noticed that Riker doesn't know how to use a chair. When the guy sits down he pulls the chair back and dramatically slings his leg over the back of it like he’s mounting a freakin’ horse. He apparently does this all the time, regardless of the situation. It’s nuts.
