Scott Jarvie408,683*POST YOUR GOOGLE+ ALBUM OF PICTURES* It's been very very popular event in the past and I'm finally doing it again tonight. _This time it will be more organized, more heads up than usual and even a live event._ *SHARE AN ALBUM/GALLERY LINK* It's simple and easy but a lot of work and very fun for all. You simply share an album here and I'll be going through every single one of the albums. Then I will +1 the pictures in the album that I'm really drawn to. *BENEFIT* Well it's simply if you'd love to know which pictures I like most.  I always loved knowing which pictures people really love of mine because it helps me have an eye for which pictures are best received. It's a huge part of becoming a better photographer in my opinion. _*To be able to put out great art is first to know what great art looks like*_ *ON AIR* This will be something new... I'm going to go through all the albums Live, Online as an On-Air hangout. I'll talk a little bit about what I'm doing. If the show goes well I'll keep it for later viewing on YouTube... if the recording isn't great I won't. *SPECIAL GUEST* Because I want to have an outloud conversation about what and why I'm doing things  I will have my good friend and great photographer @109486822103622036238 on the show to facilitate the discussion. She will also visit a lot of these albums and +1 pictures as well. We ask that everyone add her to a circle ... not just because she's awesome (though that's reason enough) but so that if any of these albums are by mistake limited access she will have access. *DIRECTIONS* 1. Paste a link of a Google+ image gallery 2. Put a title or description of what we'll see in the album 3.  *IMPORTANT* If you post a link you hereby give us permission to use a screenshare view of all those pictures and perhaps your profile in a recorded Youtube video. 4. Make sure the album is Public access 5. Add @100962871525684315897  @109486822103622036238 to your circles 6. Return the favor. Take some of the other people's albums and +1 some of your favorites. *IMPORTANT* It bears repeating: _If you post a link you hereby give us permission to use a screenshare view of all those pictures and your profile (maybe) in a recorded Youtube video._ Do not post a link if you are not ok with lots of people visiting that link in addition to us and are not ok with it being on video as well.Share your Album- A Jarvie PlusOne Critique Experience2012-09-12 05:30:00144

Gailen Mapes80,278Hand Picked Photographers Circles - Canon Camera D-F - 3 of 27Note: These circles are sorted by camera type and last name. They are split to not exceed 200 members. These circles are photographers that I admire. They have "more photos, less spam."  There have been many additions and a few drops (mostly for spam or inactivity). Be sure to get all of the circles. Share! If you miss any of the circles they can be found at: +Gailen Mapes  and scroll back to March 1st for the start of this set.  (Previous complete set was published starting February 1st.)  You can also use the #handpickedcircles hash tag and sort by "recent."I am hard up against the 5000 limit. From here on, I am going to have to become rather more strict about the "spam rules." Essentially if I have to go back more than a screen on your profile before I hit original material, there is a good chance that I may drop you from the circles. Of course there will be mitigating factors...Because of the way that Google no longer presents every person who adds me to their circles to me it is quite possible that I have missed some pretty good photographers.  If I am following you, chances are that you are already in one of these circles or in my "check later" circle.  If you think you have been missed, tag a comment on one of these posts and I will check your profile out for inclusion.  Guidelines for inclusion can be found at:   https://plus.google.com/u/0/103752943025677384806/about#circleshare #circlesharing #circleoftheday   #sharedcircles   #sharedcircle #sharedpubliccircles   #fullcircleshare #addmetoyourcircles   #bestsharedcircle   #thebestcirclesongoogle #thebestcircle             #handpickedcirclesNote: the hash tag #handpickedcircles  should only be used to refer to these circles and other circles created by +Gailen Mapes .   Thanks for your cooperation.2015-03-03 11:35:30150214

Gailen Mapes72,775Hand Picked Photographers Circles - Canon Camera D-F - 4 of 31Note: These circles are sorted by camera type and last name. They are split to not exceed 200 members. These circles are photographers that I admire. They have "more photos, less spam."  There have been many additions and a few drops (mostly for spam or inactivity). Be sure to get all of the circles. Share! If you miss any of the circles they can be found at: +Gailen Mapes and scroll back to December 1st for the start of this set.  (Previous complete set was published starting November 7th.)  You can also use the #handpickedcircles hash tag and sort by "recent."I am hard up against the 5000 limit. Seven Birches Covered in Hoarfrost.

Taking a little break from sharing the Newfoundland photos to share a more recent photo of some hoarfrost. I made this photo together with +Marc Koegel  on our scouting trip for the Winter Minimalist Workshop last weekend.
I saw this group out of the corner of my eye and slammed on the brakes.

Newfoundland Day 14&15

Let's return to the Newfoundland trip shall we?

On Day 14 &15 we did a lot of driving. We drove from the Gros Morne area to St.Anthony in the north part of the island. With, of course, a mandatory visit to L'Anse Aux Meadows National Historic Site.

The weather was brutal. Rain started to come down just as we came up the historic site's parking lot. We were the first visitors of the day. We first visited the small museum before heading out to follow the pathway to the buildings there. Coming in this reproduction sod longhouse was eye opening. I had envisioned just rough living conditions but to my surprise, it was comfortable! We had a great chat with the 2 actors in there. And they did not fall out of their roles. ;)

I wanted to make a photo there but I couldn't figure out what I wanted to do. The rain wasn't helping. I was halfway through a setup when the rain just came pouring down. That attempt was abandoned real quickly and I met up with Sarah at the visitors' centre completely drenched.

We ended the day with a lovely seafood supper next to St.Anthony's lighthouse overlooking the ocean. By now the sun had come out.

On day 15 we took HWY1 back to Grand Falls-Windsor (trust me when I say that's a drive). We did stop a few times along the highway to make a couple photographs. But it was this quiet little stream named Twin Brook, that ended up in the portfolio.

There was something about this that attracted me. I can't really put my finger on it though. I still can't. But I like it.

New Workshop Announcement

Exciting to announce +Marc Koegel  and I are doing another workshop together.

We have added an extra day to this event, so this is now a 3 day workshop happening between May 22nd & 24th. This workshop will be specifically geared towards teaching our students how to creatively use long exposures in their work.

Here's a 20 min exposure of a white bench I made back in Belgium a few years ago. It is still one of my favourite long exposures to date. And it is one heck of a print! (hint hint)

For more info on the workshop check out the link below.

Castle Junction in Winter

I'll take another break from the Newfoundland series to share with you a photo I made on a cold January morning with my friend +Paul Zizka.

Here's the Bow River photographed at Castle Junction in Banff National Park. It was -35C that morning and in this pre-sunrise photo, you can see the steam coming of the river and the open sky reflecting in it.

I love winters like this.

Newfoundland Day 13

Day 13 was still spend in Gros Morne National Park.

I had spotted this scene two days prior to this photograph, when we made the trip up Gros Morne Mountain. I had kept it in the back of my mind because I could see its potential for being a killer in open evening light.

When we finally experienced that light 2 days later, I knew where I was going. Gros Morne East Arm.

Just a little reminder that all these photos are available as prints on my website, www.olivierdutre.com

Thank you for the support!

Shot on 4x5 Delta 100 and developed in 1+4 DD-x

Newfoundland Day 12

Day 11 was spend on top of Gros Morne (the mountain). We did a 16km hike and it was absolutely amazing but very tiresome.

On day 12 we took it easy and drove down the coast to The Arches Provincial Park. A very photogenic eroded rock formation.

Instead of photographing the whole thing, I decided on a selection of the main arch, and let you (the viewer) fill in the blanks.

Newfoundland Day 11

On the morning of day 11 I spend sunrise at the Lobster Cove Head lighthouse.

I had the place all for myself and spend quite some time adjusting the composition of this photo. I tried all 3 lenses to come up with an interesting selection of the house and lighthouse.

This was photographed before sunrise during the beautiful blue hour where the building and lighthouse where softly lit by the open sky above me.

At the end of day 9 we drove to our B&B, The Neddies Harbour Inn where we spend 2 nights. They had some fascinating artwork on the walls by Shawn McNevin. Check her out! (here's a link http://studio167.ca/)

This photo was taken on the rocky beach just outside the Inn. I woke up early, grabbed my gear and started photographing. Photography can be simple at times.

Early on in the session, I had set my sights on this tidal pool. The pool was surrounded by slippery dark green seagrass. It was absolutely gorgeous.

I decided on a #11 yellow/green filter. I placed the grass low on the zone system scale (zone II) but the highlights on the grass were lifted a little bit because of that same filter. Also the filter darkened the pink sunrise clouds and separated them from the sky.

Newfoundland Day 9

On day 9 we made our way to Gros Morne. An area we wanted to explore for 3 days. Arriving in the area we immediately drove to The Tablelands. We walked around a bit and I photographed a waterfall there. We also ran into a filming crew from Oasis Channel that ended up staying at our hotel/B&B. They had some serious drone gear.

On the drive in, I had noticed a nice little spot I definitely wanted to stop at on the return trip from The Tablelands.

It was such a visually quiet little spot that I couldn't pass up on. It probably gets blasted by by most tourists. But I couldn't resist this little gem.

The light was tricky (I was shooting in the light). I used a yellow filter to bring out the colour of that leaning little tree. Exposure time was 2 sec at ƒ32.

The scene was dominated by this group of trees that were growing on this diamond shaped rock. With the water of the brook flowing around it, I found this to be a very nice metaphor for 'resilience'.

If you want to see how small this location really is, just follow this link. It will take you to Google Streetview https://goo.gl/maps/5Rnb3

Anyway. I present to you "Barters Brook".

Newfoundland Day 8

On day 8 of our Newfoundland trip, we left Fogo Island and made our way to the Riverwood Inn in Springdale.

It was a fantastic drive. Fall colours where almost peaking and the colour pallet of the trees was fantastic.

We were driving along Highway 1 when – near Alderburn – we crossed a little bridge. I looked right and a fantastic forrest scene unfolded. Immediately after the bridge there was an exit so I prayed and took it on a leap of faith. We took another right and followed and access rod for a few hundred metres until we found a big sign reading 'Eel Brook Nature Trail'.

I didn't look like a popular hike (judging from the state the sign was in) but none the less we spend some time in the woods and discovered some viewing platforms that were overlooking the beautiful Eel Brook.

On one of the platforms I found a nice 'left-right-left' staircase waterfall. I hopped down and made this photo. It was a tricky exposure with deep shadows and the bright highlights of the water and the sky.

Dedicating this one to my friend Kevin Boyle I know he's a sucker for these things too.

Newfoundland Day 7

Day 7 was still spend on Fogo Island. Driving around the day before I had noticed these traditional Saltbox houses on the island.

This photo is a departure of what I normally photograph and how I would have photographed it was it not for the view camera. The view camera makes me see the world around me in a totally different way.

This photo is more a deliberate selection than it is a registration of the complete scene. It leaves breathing room in between the subjects for your imagination to fill in the blanks I think. But also it makes you wonder about the parts that I haven't shown in the photo. It's a suggestion and not a statement. I could have easily photographed just one house and showed it in its complete form. I decided against it and found that the combination of parts of 2 houses, made for a stronger photo.

This photo is also about the space between the houses. And how they are connected with each other through the wires in the background. That space is as equally important in this composition as the space the houses take up. I had one student over the weekend (he was big on architecture) that picked up on that. I spend some time perfecting the composition on the 4x5 ground glass and was happy that he saw what I saw.

Let me know what you feel this photo is about. Is it a successful concept you think? Is it something that works? Or do you feel that it doesn't? Let me know in the comments.

Newfoundland Day 6

On day 5, we spend driving to the Fogo ferry crossing. Driving there became somewhat of a stressful day.

Halfway through our day we got a low tire warning on our rental car. Nothing to be worried about really. We found a gas station and pumped the tire back to spec and continued on our way.

We made it to the parking lot of the ferry with again that one tire low. So I start 'wrenching' on the parking lot and 10 minutes later the spare is on and we are ready to go.
Ferry comes, we drive on. We had a great crossing. The sun was getting low and it was amazing to be on the water in the golden hour of the day.

We drive OFF the ferry and guess what... we get another low tire warning. ANOTHER tire had gone soft. Are you kidding?! So we drove to the nearest town and couldn't find a gas station at all. But on the way in, I had seen3 ... more »

But on the way in, I had seen 3 fisherman who were repairing nets in a garage. I knew they were going to be able to help us out. After a fun conversation off we were again.

Our destination was Joe Batt's Arm. No we didn't sleep at the fancy modern hotel. We had reserved accomodations in a lovely B&B called 'Quintal House Heritage Guest Home'. A Gorgeous restored saltbox house. Nadine was an amazing host and basically we had the house to ourselves at that time of year. If you find yourselves in that area, GO THERE!

On the morning of day 6 we had planned to set out and do some hiking around the town of Fogo. The morning would prove to not be that simple. After I had driven 20 meters, guess what, we had another low tire warning. AAARGH!!!

Nadine was able to help us out though. She gave us a portable air pump that her brother had left in his truck down the road and she gave us directions to the nearest garage on the island. That became our first stop of the morning. We were happy we got there in one piece.

The (interesting) guy helped us out, he repaired our 2 punctured tires (with some grumbling) and off we where again, hopefully now to do some hiking in Fogo.

In Fogo we ended up choosing the 'Lion's Den, Shoal Tickle, Eastern Tickle and Lock's Cove'-hike. A 5.5km loop that hugs the hills around the northern part of the island. It also includes the famous Marconi Site.

This photo became one of my favourite photographs of the trip. The rugged terrain in combination with the soft looking grasses and the addition of the lilies and the perfect reflection were such a beautiful sight to behold. After I was done it started raining softly.

All the photo's I've shared so far are all part of the same Newfoundland & Nova Scotia series. They are available as prints if you are interested. Just check out the website for details. Thank you.

Newfoundland Day 5

We spend day 5 of out trip driving from Terra Nova to the Fogo Island Ferry. That's where all the fun with the rental started. But I'll tell that story on another day.

Early in our drive we crossed the Gambo River. I was surprised to see this whole river bed littered with boulders. Such a great spectacular sight. At least I thought it was spectacular. SO I stopped the car just after the bridge and walked down the embankment to right up to the river bank.

This was the first photo I took on that day. And it was one of those dull grey calm mornings. A perfect day for a low key photo. It was a difficult composition to find a balance in.

Newfoundland Day 3 & 4 (part2)

On the second day of our stay around Terra Nova, we decided to explore the little fishing settlement of Salvage.

This is such a scenic little town I would put it on EVERYONE's list to visit. It's one of the prettiest towns I've seen. Colourful houses dot the shores. It's just fantastic.

There are signed walking trails all over. And that day we decided to take one. The trails are a great story in themselves, they were built to help employment and provide options and opportunity for the town after a fire in the fish plant. They alone are well worth a trip to Salvage.

Anyway my eye caught this abandoned cemetery at the end of a land tongue. It was a beautiful place. The graves were surrounded by a white picket fence. Everything was worn by weather and textures were everywhere.

I walked around the graves with respect and tried not to trample anything. In the end I decided to photograph "Mary Trim's" headstone (of the 11 headstones on the site). She was born in 1794 and passed away on Dec 29, 1859 at the age of 66. ___

Newfoundland Day 3 & 4

On day 3 we drove to a place called Port Blandford. Which is a little town just outside of Terra Nova National Park. A place we wanted to visit a little longer to do some hiking.

On the first morning we were there I stepped out before sunrise to explore an old jetty just minutes from where we were staying.
It was a calm morning. The only thing that was happening was a couple of fisherman talking back and forth about 100m away from me. They were preparing their little boat and left before sunrise.

There was not a cloud in sight. A beautiful gradient filled the sky to the east (the one I was facing making the photograph). The last quarter moon was high in the sky and unfortunately I was unable to include it in the composition. None the less, my 8 minute pre-sunrise exposure came out really good. Newfoundland Day 2

Yesterday I forgot to mention that day 1 was probably the most stressful of all the days of our holiday. In all my inexperience shooting 4x5, I thought packing ca. 130 sheets would be more than enough to get through the trip. That seemed like such a big number that nothing could go wrong.

Right?
Wrong!

When we landed it hit me that that number only would result in 65 photographs. At 6 photos a day (give or take) I would run out on day 11 (of a 16 day trip). So I googled what shops still carried film. After some driving around I found 1 shop in St. John's that would be able to get me 4x5 film. When I order the film there was a gentlemen in there questioning me why I still did 4x5. Surely, digital had taken over by now.

I overnighted 2 boxes of 100 sheets and THEN we went on our way to Cape Spear. A little detail I forgot to mention yesterday that would completely disrupt or first few days on the Rock. ;)

On night one we stayed at a lovely B&B called The Bayside Bed and Breakfast in Bay Roberts. Our hosts Basil and Judy were amazing. Breakfast was to die for! We will definitely stay with them again next time we were over.

Anyway. On the morning of day 2 I drove out before sunrise to the small fishing settlement of Hibbs Cove. Not a soul in sight. Only me, the calm ocean and a seagull. Who happened to stay quite still during the 40 second exposure.

The rest of the day would consist of hauling ass back to St. John's to wait for the delivery truck to drop off the film 'before noon'. It was close to 1 o'clock when I saw the truck roll up. When the delivery guy came back out I rushed in the shop and grabbed my film. Thanks again Newfoundland Camera Imaging for pulling this off!

Then we hauling ass back to where we needed to end our day 2 trip. Needless to say, we didn't see much that day. And it was a long day.

Newfoundland Day 1

After landing in St. John's Newfoundland on September 18, 2014 and picking up our (what turned out to be a horrible) Dodge Journey rental car, and after doing some sight seeing in downtown St. John's, we headed to Cape Spear.

It was a wonderful day with really nice calm weather. With just a gentle breeze coming off the ocean. We parked the car on the parking lot and strolled towards the cliffs. I was surprises to see World War II bunkers on this site. A great surprise none the less. I love history!

After walking around those we aimed for the old lighthouse. A short climb would get us there. I hate any climb (especially with the bag pack full of gear with me). I didn't see a photo there so we made our way down again to the new lighthouse. That's where the classic photo of Cape Spear is so to speak.

Conditions were good. An interesting sky with beautiful clouds was in front of me. After fine tuning the composition a bit I settle on the one photo you see below. I settled on a red filter for this photo. Measured the light ... and then I had to wait (for a ship to sail out of the frame).

Once the ship was gone I thought I was home free but... nope.

You see this is one of those sites that - even in low season - attracts a fair number of visitors. Obviously, I wanted none of them in the photo. Every time I thought 'this is it', someone's head pop up from behind the cliffs or lighthouse. It took about an hour for me to take 2 photos. By that time the cloud had shifted to the left. Creating almost a repetition and reflection of the cliffs below.

A happy accident.

Just a reminder that all these photos are available in print. Just check www.olivierdutre.com for more info. Thank you for the support.

Now this is something I can get behind!

Starting tomorrow, I'm inviting photographers around the world to enter the #DitchComfort  Photography Challenge!

What does that mean? Find a new angle of a common subject, experiment without inhibition, get wet and dirty, try a new genre – whatever it means to you to step out of your comfort zone as a photographer. For submission info and all the contest rules and regs: http://bit.ly/ditchcomfort

Submit your landscape and outdoor adventure photos for a chance to win a 1 hour photo critiquing session with Paul Zizka and a copy of "Summits and Starlight: The Canadian Rockies"!

I can't wait to see what you all come up with!

Photos from Newfoundland and Nova Scotia

Some of you might remember that I went to Newfoundland and Nova Scotia in September/October. It was a wonderful trip. With some of the best fall colours I've seen in my life.

So here are all the selected photographs. I came home with 68 shots. I selected 45 in the end.

Over the next weeks or so I will share some back stories on some selected photographs.

Burned White Spruce

Before and during last week's workshop with +Royce Howland and Costas Costoulas of Calgary's Resolve Photo, I drove by this tree a bunch of times. Every time I did, my heart stopped. The tree was such a sad sight to behold but at the same time, I knew there was a chance of making a very graphical photograph there.

So when the workshop concluded and all students had left, I said goodbye to my fellow teachers and went looking for the photo.

Standing there, under what was once - probably - one of the most mighty White Spruces around, I felt small and insignificant. At the same time I felt claustrophobic (seeing all the burned trees around) but hopeful at the same time. That is why I composed this very tightly (claustrophobic) and included some trees at the bottom (hope) to represent what I was thinking at the time. Hope that makessen... more »

Looking forward to teaching along side +Royce Howland next week!!!

Today I'm spending some time working up a new Epson 3880 printer; the first test prints are running now. Ah... I love the smell of ink on paper in the morning. :) I already have an Epson 4880 for colour printing, and another 3880 converted for B&W-only work with the excellent Jon Cone K7 Carbon inkset. But I needed another portable 17" printer to use for workshops...

... like the Winter Monochrome Masterclass I'm running next week with +Olivier Du Tré and Costas Costoulas of Resolve Photo. :) We're just about to hit the road to scout locations and set up at the lodge. It's going to be a great week.

A couple of spots are still open. If you have a few days free starting Jan. 15 and would like to jump in with 3 mad-for-monochrome instructors covering B&W from capture to print, contact us. Details by clicking through the link.

KILLER WEEK here at #minimalmonday  ! It was so great to see your contributions to the theme roll in again. I had 3 favourites early on. Pilot Mountain

This is a classic view of Pilot Mountain, a gorgeous looking peak in Banff National Park. Shot this with my buddy +Paul Zizka  out of the bed of the truck.

With this photo I'd like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a very inspirational 2015.

A very early #mountainmonday submission (now I have time) for +Michael Russell

Wow I am so sorry guys I am only doing last weeks minimal monday wrap up today. Work has been nuts. And with the preparation for the workshop I had absolutely no time.

First things first. I'd like to congratulate +Venelina Tzontcheva for 'winning' next months publication in +Stark-Magazine . Both Jason and I felt your photograph 'Ethernity' deserved just that. Send me a personal message or an email and I will let you know how to proceed.

I know. You guys are all still waiting for the #minimalmonday wrap up for this week.
It's been a mental week here in Cochrane. I had simply too much on my plate this week.
I hope I can get to it tomorrow night after the workshop with +Paul Zizka

This is going to be the most intensive workshop I've ever been part of. Shaping up to be a good one. Hope you can make it out.

Love B&W photography? Love printing? Want to learn more about both? What better way to spend a few winter days in January 2015 than to join me along with +Olivier Du Tré and Costas Costoulas of Resolve Photo for the Winter Monochrome Masterclass. Based in the front ranges of the Canadian Rockies, we're going to take a small group on an intensive experience of B&W photography, going from field shoots through development to print. 3 instructors, 6 students maximum! Click through the link for details...
