I am your friend.
If you'll let me keep my small web in the corner of your room, I will catch the annoying mosquitoes and the germ-carrying flies. I will stalk the floor and no roach will be safe. My webs will ensnare the ants and termites, the clothes moths and larder beetles. I make no annoying sounds, but go quietly about my life.
You might see my big eyes, but I mostly orient myself by taste, and I taste with almost every part of my body, so I keep myself very clean. Unlike the creatures I kill in your service, I carry no disease to threaten you. I don't leave trails of frass and debris to pollute your home. I am the cleanest animal under your roof.
If you don't want me in your house, please don't kill me. I can run quickly, but I can't run far. My small body just doesn't have enough energy in it, so I will stop and wait and hope tha... more »

Holy crap. Logged in real quick to Facebook on my phone (using the mobile Web version, since I don't even have the app installed) and it is indeed a stream of baby photos and share-if-you-love-jesus posts.
I was shocked the other day after reading the comments under a Tech Crunch article on Facebook Home. Lots of negativity towards the company. Way more than against Google or Apple. Not an unbiased sample, I know, but a lot of the comments were very insightful. The gist was that people are on Facebook not because of the platform, but despite it.
Google+ seems much better positioned to revolve around users's real interests.
The future may not pertain to any single social network after all.

Just made a donation of $3000 to Doctors without Borders from trip credits I earned by flying more cheaply than Google's cap. It's definitely worth the 15+ hours of discomfort when flying for the company.

Out of sheer luck, I bumped into surfing legends Tommy Carroll and Ross Clark Jones at a friend's birthday this weekend. I asked for my friend to arrange a photo, even though I didn't know how well they would take the request. To my pleasant surprise, they were very friendly and super keen to chat about their love for the sport and the good time they've had in Brazil (I'm Brazilian). Tommy's last words before leaving the party? "See you in the surf. Drop in on me. Make a few turns. Whatever". What a champion.

Google Glass: It's About the Next Model
+Engadget has an excellent video review of Glass at this link, though I recommend going through the article as well. Overall I am glad that I did not shell out for the Explorer edition without trying one out first, not because I wouldn't like to muck with it but because its lack of adjustability for eyesight weakness makes it a fairly sure bet that I'd have a hard time using it. Lack of adjustments for functions like volume control, so-so battery life and other factors definitely make this a tool for developers and early adopters.
But let's fast-forward to a year from now. Instead of the somewhat dated TI OMAP 4430 processor at its core, we can expect a consumer-edition processor that's likely to be smaller, more powerful and much more sippy on the batteries. With this in mind, we're likely to see a unit t... more »

While some think Google Glass is a Segway, doomed never to become popular, I think it's more like Gordon Gekko's big old-fashioned brick cell phone. Expensive, may look egotistical but almost certainly likely to improve and be part of the way we all have wearable computing.

Needed the Orange County Harbor Patrol in hurry just now, from my paddleboard, and the Google Search App kicked Siri's ass. I go out with my iPhone 5 in a waterproof bag hanging around my neck. Needed the patrol to catch some kids that tried to swamp us on our boards. Three attempts to get Siri to find the number failed. Switched to the Google app, said same thing I told Siri, found the number in seconds. Seconds later, had the patrol on the line. Nice job, Google. The only thing that might have made it faster would have been +Project Glass :)

Yes, Google Glass survives a wet shower
You thought I was kidding when I said I would never take them off.
Yes, they survive being wet. I had them full on soaked in my shower this morning. +Google Glass still works.
So, they will be usable out in rain or other weather. Feel safe #GlassExplorers !

My two-week review of Google Glass: it all depends on the price
This week I gave five speeches while wearing it.
I passed through airports four times (two more in a couple of hours).
I let hundreds of people try my Google Glass.
I have barely taken it off since getting it other than to sleep.
Here's my review after having Google Glass for two weeks:
1. I will never live a day of my life from now on without it (or a competitor). It's that significant.
2. The success of this totally depends on price. Each audience I asked at the end of my presentations "who would buy this?" As the price got down to $200 literally every hand went up. At $500 a few hands went up. This was consistent, whether talking with students, or more mainstream, older audiences.
3. Nearly everyone had an emotional outburst of "wow" or ... more »

I'm studying people's reactions to Glass
I've been on three flights so far, about to get on the fourth, to Berlin. So far no crew has asked me to turn off my Google Glass. Why not? They don't realize it's on. It usually is off, no lights, no indicators. But it's always ready to take a photo.
Which means I got a neat photo that would have otherwise got me in trouble.
Other reactions?
Everyone wants to try it on. Even those who are disgusted by it.
It has not failed to recognize anyone's voice commands, even a guy with a deep Australian accent.
Everyone says that the popularity of Glass will totally depend on the price. Most say they will be interested if it's under $500.
Most don't notice I have anything weird on my face. But the people who do have seen it on TV and are interested in w... more »

I just got my Google Glass last night, and it's been a long time since a tech gadget has had me grinning ear to ear so often. I was at the #tech4dem event, and let +Marci Harris and +Macon Phillips try on my Glass. Both of them quickly got the same big grin!
It's not at all what people expect! It's a magical experience. I haven't yet been quite able to put my finger on why it feels that way, but I think it's the immediacy. Rather than fumbling for your phone, then opening the camera app, you can take a picture or a video with a touch, and share it with another touch. You can also talk to the device, taking pictures, doing google searches, getting directions, or sending emails or texts, without ever touching the devices. (You can wake it up with a touch or by tossing your head slightly.)
A couple of comments:
1. People have this notion that it... more »

So I've heard some concern about having that RF device next to your head ... AREN'T YOU WORRIED ABOUT BRAIN CANCER??
I've got a long history of studying radiation from here to Mars, having worked at Fermilab, NASA and more recently in materials measurement using RF signals. My off the cuff answer is "I seriously doubt it" but I also know that you don't know, until you know. So, geeks with guns, why not measure?
Here's Glass with my mobile platform of choice, the Agilent FieldFox. You can see a big fatty bluetooth signal there (the squiggly bump). But, is that the local WIFI, or Glass? Hmmmm ...
On the second picture we have it in an Anechoic chamber. Basically this is "spy room" where RF don't get in or out (see third pic). And in this second pic, what do you see? A whole lot of sileeeeeeence. In fact a RF anechoic chamber is ... more »

Took this photo this morning on my way to work. This is a reef break near where I live. It's long paddle from the beach and kinda spooky. It's really finicky and is rarely working, but when it does it's quite a sight to behold (not the case today). Zoom all the way in and you can see a lone surfer in the line-up, waiting for the set.

This is HUGE.
"AUSTRALIA'S supermarket behemoth Woolworths will cast Microsoft into the annals of history by switching to Google software wall-to-wall, in a move the internet giant describes as its largest worldwide deal.
The decision has bigger ramifications beyond software as Woolworths will vastly decrease its number of PCs, opting instead for Google-powered hardware such as the Chromebox thin clients and Chromebook laptops.
It will be the end of an era for thousands of employees at Woolworths, where Microsoft products are as common as tills; they will cease using Microsoft Outlook for email, Office for productivity and Excel for spreadsheets. Instead, it will rely on Google's variation of the Microsoft offerings in the form of Google Apps and Google Docs.
Woolworths will take a cautious approach to the deployment before deciding if all 200,000... more »

Today the country of Malaysia announced that they are adopting Google Apps (our suite of cloud-based tools that includes Gmail, Docs and Calendar) for 10 million students, teachers and parents. They’ll also be deploying Chromebooks to primary and secondary schools nationwide. These efforts are part of Malaysia’s national education reform, which includes making the web central to its education system (you can read the full plan here: http://goo.gl/dMxdG).
