The Memorial Cenotaph located near the center of the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park is an arched tomb for the victims of the atomic bomb. A stone chest below the arch holds a register that contains all the known names of those who lost their lives as a result of the bombing of Hiroshima. It is designed in a traditional Shinto style, to provide protection to the souls of the victims. The cenotaph carries the epitaph, “Let all souls here rest in Peace, for we shall not repeat the evil.”

Just tried a new version of Matcha KitKat called オトナの甘さ Matcha KitKat. This is a new series of KitKat made for adults with a less sweet flavour. オトナの甘さ means Adult Sweetness. A KitKat geared towards adults!
KitKat is really popular in Japan and they are always coming out with new seasonal varieties. They also make great おみやげ (souvenirs) as each region has their own unique specialty flavour.

Okayama Castle also known as “u-jo” the “Crow Castle” is one of the must see castles in Japan. It was originally built in 1597, but the modern structure is a reconstruction. It is famous for its striking black colour due to the black planks covering the castle’s outer walls. Rumour has it the colour was chosen by the daimyo (domain lord) as a jest at Himeji Castle, which is pristine white.

Sunomata Castle, also known as Ichiya-jo is a Japanese castle located in Ogaki in Gifu Prefecture. The castle is a replica of the famous original, which according to legend is said to have been built in one night. “Ichiya” literally means “one night” and hence the name “One Night Castle”. The original was constructed by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, one of the generals of the famous warlord Oda Nobunaga during the build-up to the siege of Gifu Castle in 1566.

Heian Jingu Shrine has a short history but is still considered a must see attraction in Kyoto. It is a rarity as a modern shrine in Kyoto, which is famous for its shrines, which are hundreds of years old. It was built in 1895 to commemorate the 1100th anniversary of the founding of Kyoto. Heian-kyo was the former name of Kyoto and the shrine is dedicated to the first and last emperors, who reigned from Kyoto. The current buildings are replicas of the original Kyoto Imperial Palace which was destroyed in 1227, and is two-thirds the size of the Kyoto Gosho of the Heian period (794-1185). It is a fantastic example of how significant Chinese influences were during the Heian period in Japan.

Nijo Castle in Kyoto was built in 1603 as the official Kyoto residence of the first Tokugawa shogun, Ieyasu. It is not your typical Japanese castle, but more of a palace style castle. The Ninomaru Palace is almost entirely built of hinoki cypress and features gold leaf decorations and elaborate wood carvings. It was built in order to impress visitors of the power and wealth of the shogun.
