What part of your personality surprises people?

This question is going to need some explanation.

I'm not sure whether it’s some weird impostor syndrome, or just that my brain is wired differently than others, but I always feel that I'm seen as rather benign in many ways.

That is, until I'm hit with a topic I know about, am passionate about, and someone is definitely wrong about. When those three things are true, and I have enough time / energy, I will beat someone into submission with facts until they bleed, or give up.

It’s not exactly a dark side, but it’s a forceful side that doesn't come out often, and when it does, I think it surprises people (or maybe just surprises me :P)

One of the issues that Dan Ariely addressed in his book, The Honest Truth About Dishonesty, and in his 2009 blog, centered on the question of payments to doctors:

The real issue here is that people don’t understand how profound the problem of conflicts of interest really is, and how easy it is to buy people. Doctors on Pfizer’s payroll may think they’re not being influenced by the drug maker -- 'I can still be objective!' they’ll say -- but in reality, it’s very hard for us not to be swayed by money. Even minor amounts of it. Or gifts. Studies have found that doctors who receive free lunches or samples from pharmaceutical reps end up prescribing more of the company’s drugs afterwards.

What do you need help with?

There are many things that I can do for myself, but when it comes to asking for help, I’ve had to learn not to be bad at it.

Yes, back in the day, I’d bury my head in the sand and ignore things that I couldn’t deal with just because I didn’t know who to ask when I needed help, and the times that I asked for help, I often asked the wrong person.

Eventually, I discovered one very important thing: When I need help, it’s all about how I communicate it. It’s a case of putting it out there and hoping that someone willing will step forward, but not depending on it.

And definitely not burying your head in the sand.

You know, it would be nice if we could send Adobe a message about how mad this massive increase in price makes us. I now upgrade Adobe Photoshop every other version,; this amounts to around $300 over a 3 year period. The best I can do under the new CC model is $20 per month for PS; which equals $240 per year. "The old model cost me around $100/year to stay as current as I needed to be. The new model will cost me $240 a year.

I'm told by people who have their bread buttered by Adobe, that this unbelievable increase in price is reasonable. Not only will this increase my costs in a staggering way, it will reduce Adobe's need to provide enough new features to entice people to upgrade. Many of you know how passionate I am about women in technology. This year I had the privilege of live reporting the #womentechmakers conversation at I/O, and you can find all of my contributions in the Google I/O community (http://goo.gl/EGIpq). Question of the Day

I could read by the time I was four years old. When I was a kid, my mum would take me and my sister to the library every week so that we could get more books. Every night, 7:30 would be bedtime, but from that time onwards, I’d read until I fell asleep.

Since then, if I ever can’t sleep, I read. Sometimes until dawn breaks if the sleeplessness is particularly powerful, but most of the time, an hour of reading will be enough for me to get to sleep, and sleep well.

It’s a childhood ritual that has survived to this day.

So my question for you, today, is:

What childhood rituals do you still practice?

Why the new Google+ rocks for writers.

Some writers are less than gruntled about Google+'s new design. Here's why they should love it.

The complaint goes like this: The new Google+ emphasizes pictures and de-emphasizes words, which is a Pinterest-like move that panders to non-readers and disadvantages the word people.

This whole argument is false, and here's why:

Falsehood #1: You need a lot of words, not a picture, to promote writing.

It's false because that's how the most successful books are promoted: with pictures, not a wall of words. Ask any book jacket designer.

Falsehood #2: A "card" doesn't have enough information to convey what's in a written work.

In fact, that's how libraries were organized for centuries -- with a catalog of cards.

Somehow, some way, I ended up in your circles. We may have conversed on a post of mine, yours, or someone else's.

I just want to say, not only to my nearest and dearest (you know who you are), but to everyone, that I'm glad I have had the opportunity to have conversations with you.

This universe is limitless, but this world is limited, and it's getting smaller, in some ways, every day.

The number of people, however, is growing, and among the billions around the world, we met, either in text or in hangout, and I will say that I have learnt something from every one of you.

So I just want to say:

Question of the Day

I've had many mentors in my life; my father, my mother, my nan, my granddad, my maths teacher, and some of the people I’ve worked with. I've been lucky enough in my life that there have been people around me who have seen enough in me to want to help me and offer advice.

One of the best bits of advice I’ve ever received, though, was intended for the workplace, but I think it applies to life in general:

The most important problem for anyone is the one that’s stopping them now.

The thing that’s stopping me at the moment, though, is out of my control. I'm waiting for the results of meetings that I’m not privy to, and while it’s frustrating, and it’s the most important problem, it’s one I can’t fix, so I'm not letting it stop me from doing other things.
