Hi from the University of Sydney!
We'll be running our third workshop for Maths, Science and Computing teachers, this year expanding to a three day conference from the 1st to 3rd of July.
In Australia, the new draft National Curriculum: Digital Technologies has recently been released, and we'll be creating classroom ready resources that link directly to that curriculum, as well as cross-curricular activities for maths and science teachers.

Just wanted to share some pictures from a recent Girls Programming Network workshop we ran in Sydney. We had about 40 high school girls attend, making their own mobile apps for Android using App Inventor. Most had never programmed before, and many attend schools where a computing elective isn't offered. We challenged the girls to think of a problem that a simple, specific app could solve.

After a busy pizza and chocolate fueled few hours, we had some great apps: drawing apps, magic 8 balls, a quiz to test a foreign-language learner's vocab list, an app to help one of our students cheat at scrabble in Swedish (to be used only against said student's Mum), an app that used text-to-speech to read messages aloud when driving, and of course, pictures of cats.

By enabling girls to have authentic experiences with computer science, we can encourage women to not just be consumers... more »

In the bird equivalent of the Stanford Marshmallow Experiment*, Cockatoos have been shown to defer gratification, delaying eating nuts in order to win tastier ones.
"A video showed one bird, Muppet, waiting 40 seconds while strutting agitatedly around a table top with the first nut in its beak before exchanging it for a second." **

Know a high-school girl interested in computing and technology?

The Girls' Programming Network is gearing up for the first workshop of 2013, to be held on Saturday, April 6th at +The University of Sydney!

We'll be making our own Android apps using MIT's app inventor.  Whether you've never programmed before or are already a coding ninja, come along and we'll guide you through writing your own app! Don't worry if you don't have an Android, - we'll have a few that you can test out your app on! :)

The free workshop will run from 10am to 4pm, and we'll provide lunch! If you'd like to attend or know a high-school girl who might be interested, check out our website to register!

Hi!

Do you know any high school girls (or boys) who are interested in computing? Maybe they would like to enrol in the NCSS Challenge, an online programming competition for high school students that teaches students to code while they compete.

It runs for five weeks every year, starting next Monday 6th August, and there's no previous programming experience required. Of course, if your sister, daughter, cousin, friend or student is already an accomplished programmer then we have intermediate and advanced streams as well.

The competition is run by Sydney University, and there is more information on our website: http://ncss.edu.au

I have enrolled all my year 11 and 9 Info Tech students in the 2012 NCSS Challenge (and my son). The aim of this is to use this online activity to improve their #cs4hs  computational thinking skills, learn how to program in Python (and for some, help some with tackling VCE IT Unit 2 Outcome 2!)

This will be great so why don't you join us? The fun starts this Monday 6 August so get your students registered. Special thanks to +Nicky Ringland and James Curran for making this possible.
