fences. no limitation

somewhere between gardnerville, nv and bridgeport, ca roadside u.s. 395. the fence belongs to an abandoned posted farm i explored. i truly can imagine how it was living there with that view, hopefully before the highway had been built.

when i have urgent work to do that occupies all my concentration i sometimes tend to seek for distraction. i today found it on kwerfeldein.de where a new photoapp for iphone has been introduced. it's name is tadaa. ok, it provides general adjustment, filter, frames and all that stuff you know from any other photo app. BUT this one provides something special. combining with masking (with a good but not excellent working auto edge detection) and tiltshift/blur you can create the impression of depth of fielt and beautiful bokehs on your iphoneography. and it works pretty awesome. 

the LEFT is the AFTER, the RIGHT the BEFORE.
google mixed them up while posting.

btw, the tiny camera on top of the binoculars is my exa iib

aidan, the silent daydreamer

he is the younger son of my unrelated sister. living under the california sun and surrounded by the gentle breeze of alameda he is a very quiet character, often daydreaming, playing by his own, mumbling magical rhymes all the time and with the brightest smile you can imagine when you wake him up with a soft touch. 

dunno why, untypical i am in family mood today.

what's wrong with google+ fonts?

does anybody have the same problem as i have? the font looks so ugly i cannot stand. seems the new g+ ui caused a problem with my default system font properties. the ugly look appears on google+ only using chrome on win8. interestingly i only have it on my desktop pc, it's fine on dell ultrabook. can anybody help please?

protest fanfare

it's labour day in europe. since my student days  (in the wild east of germany) i haven't been on a protest march. but for today friends invited me to participate in a demonstration saying "YOU are our only expert of 1st may maches". born and raised in the gdr i was used to it from when i was little. i loved going with my father's brigade on the rally. back then i didn't know what it meant and honestly i don't know today. i just hope i don't get arrested and get my residence permit revoked. i gonna take my new toy zenza bronica etr loaded with ilford hp5 with me in order to shoot the first roll.

actually the appropriate flowers are red dianthus, but i just don't have a photograph of.

r is for rhyolite

another impression of what is left of rhyolite, the former miner's town in the death valley. this building was used to be the town's union pacific train station. the las vegas & tonopah railroad depot. rhyolite had about 10.000 citizens during it's boom. but the decline began very quickly after no more gold could be found. the local postman, who was the last man standing after all other people already had moved away, left the town in 1919.

the way that leads to leadfield

leadfield - a youngster as ghost towns go-also has one of the strangest histoies. it was founded by a shady promoter, c. c. julian, in 1926. he used the tow primarily to promte the sale of stock in a lead mine. california lawmen were already investigating julian as he was starting the town.

the place never florished, and more money was undoubtly made on stock sales than from the lead that was mined still, while the boom lasted, leadfield prospered; as many as 300 people lived there before the mine proved to e a dud and the stockholders found that all they held was worthless paper. a post office opened in leadfield, but lasted only eight months.

a few old buildings reain, a silent and shabby monument to the wily julian and to the people who believed his story of riches to be made. another, perhaps better, reason to visit the remins of... more »

hornitos - chocolate city within in the golden hills

hornitos began prior 1856 when the postal system was developed in california because hornitos has a post office in 1856 (still runs). it was one of the countless mining camps in the mother lode. the town was laid out in the spanish style with a plaza surrounded by businesses. myth has it that hornitos was founded by castouts from nearby quartzburg. however it began, hornitos has a reputation fpr being a wide-open town with fandango halls and dance hall girl. knife fights were frequent and killing commonplace. the town boasted of a diverse population with mexicans, chilenos, chinese, and african-americans. in the 1860 census, over 1500 (another resource speaks of 15.000 which i don't find believable) people counted hornitos as home. only 60 have been left today, but at one time it had a blacksmith, a bakery, hotel. livery, stationery... more »

desert treasures

this is what i found in the ghost town cerro gordo, inyo county. in the 1860s, when silver (actually a combination of silver and lead) was discovered in the area, cerro gordo quickly grew to a community of 2000. its boom years were 1867-70 when huge quantities of ore were mined, helping to finance the growth of los angeles. few towns were wild as cero gordo. in addition to countless bars, the town had two businessed politely known as "dance halls". some civic-minded people tried to divert the minders from their usual recreation by involving them in the cerro gordo social union, a debating society. for  few weeks the experiment succeeded, but when the novelty wore off, the dance halls and saloons were back in business. at cerro gordo, only a few buildings and foundations mark this once lawless mining camp. remains of the old smelter greet the traveler entering... more »

endless world

yesterday i watched darwin. no services ahead on tv, about a little village on the edge of death valley. according to the documentary 35 people still live there. even though i saw no living person when i visited last year, i found many traces of life. it's a very silent, peaceful place which provides a stunning sight over the desert and the mountains. i understand why people want to hide there from the officials (like charles manson did) or themselves, want to spend their remaining years in peace or live there for a while until the individual universe shifts back into order.

i often think of going to places like that and meanwhile i know many.

i shot the first roll with my exa iib after i had it repaired. i made a big mistake with overexposing two stops because of the snow around. bummer. i cannot get rid of the grain even if i cann tickle some contrast out of the frames in the scanning process. i have 5 frames that don't look overexpose. let's see the results ... /me off scanning
