Three University Projects Use Twitter to Understand Happiness, Hate and Other Emotions in America
It turns out that the fleeting pronouncements we post on Twitter are catnip for academics and others eager to find the elusive pulse of American society. Since Twitter launched in 2006, researchers have been hard at work figuring out how to turn those 140-character musings into tea leaves with something meaningful to say about us all.

Proof the internet filter lives on by other means
The creeping evolution of internet censorship that saw the Melbourne Free University taken offline without recourse has slipped under the radar of many Australians, write Jasmine-Kim Westendorf and Jem Atahan.
...
On April 4, our website was blocked by an Australian authority. For nine days, our website was inaccessible to people using Australia's major telecommunications networks, including Telstra, Optus and Vodafone.

After persistent questioning, our local internet supplier reluctantly told us that the internet address of our website had been blocked by the "Australian Government". Even more alarmingly, they said they were legally unable to "provide the details regarding who has blocked the IP or why".

Our first thought was, what have we done to draw the eye of the authorities? Who have... more »

Google+ Update: First Impressions
In all I have spent less than 30 minutes on the new Google+ and have not read any news or other opinions.  These are just some of my very first impressions on the new changes.

Mimicry?
My instant reaction upon first seeing the new Google+ design is that it seems Google is attempting to appeal to the Facebook and Pinterest crowds.

Mobile Trumps Desktop?
This new design looks more like the mobile version of the product with a large focus on photos rather than textual content.

Personally, I've never liked the mobile version of Google+ for this very reason.  Posts of any depth, with textual content more than one or two sentences are truncated and replaced with any imagery that may be associated with the post. Now every single post requires the user to click on it to expand the post in order toacc... more »

Command-Tab with Command-Option #apple   #tip #howto
The Command-Tab key combination is very useful for switching between open apps. Often though, you'll want to switch to an app that is minimised or closed. You can bring up these apps by taking your finger off the Tab key and moving it to the Option key and then removing your thumb from the Command key.

In the image above I have already tried to switch to mail and found it is closed. So I have then Command-Tabbed to select Mail and then taken my middle finger off the Tab key and put my index finger onto the Option key. Then when I removed my thumb from the Command key the Mail app popped up into the foreground.

I only learned this very useful tip today at the Mac Observer: OS X: Application Switcher Power Tips: http://bit.ly/14cpHhL

Fact of Fiction? The Legend of the QWERTY Keyboard
What came first: the typist or the keyboard? The answer depends on the keyboard. A recent article in Smithsonian’s news blog, Smart News, described an innovative new keyboard system that proposes a more efficient alternative to the ubiquitous “universal” keyboard best known as QWERTY – named for the first six letters in the top row of keys. The new keyboard, known as KALQ, is designed specifically for thumb-typing on today’s smart phones and tablets. It’s an interesting and by all accounts commercially viable design that got me thinking about the rationale behind the QWERTY keyboard. Unlike KALQ, it couldn’t have been designed to accommodate a specific typing technique because, well, the idea of typing –touch typing, at least– hadn’t been invented yet. It turns out that there is a lot of myth and misinformation surroundingthe development of ... more »

Australian Google office building hacked
The building control system for one of Google's offices in Sydney was hacked into by two IT security researchers who say hundreds more in Australia are also accessible via the internet.

A building control system, or building management system, is a computer-based system used to control and monitor a building's mechanical and electrical equipment using software. It monitors and controls things like ventilation, air conditioning, lighting and fire systems.

US researchers Billy Rios and Terry McCorkle of security firm Cylance found that the building control system for Google's Wharf 7 office in Pyrmont was vulnerable after finding it on the popular hacker search engine Shodan, which maps out vulnerable devices on the internet.

Is Wearable Computing Retro?
There has been a lot of buzz surrounding the recent release of the developers' version of Google Glass and a growing interest in wearable computers in general with the possibility of Apple making an iWatch.

But just how new is the concept of wearable computing really?

Apple has been selling wearable computing devices since 2007 when the iPhone was released.  These devices come with a wearable extension of the device which deliver audible information to the user and provide the user with the ability to control the device through voice or by manual operation through buttons.

I've argued that voice and audio are actually preferable to visual displays to interact with your device when on the go so that your eyes can be left free.  Any information that can be delivered through a visual display can be received throughthe e... more »

The Queen Stands Down #adelaide   #at2013
Yesterday the statue of Queen Victoria, which has stood in that prime position since 1894, was removed.  She no longer marks the centre of the city of Adelaide, at the heart of the square bearing her name.

She did well to keep that position for so long, others have not fared so well. The statue of Hercules, one of the first to be erected in the city has since been removed from Victoria square and is now tucked away in Pennington gardens.

Colonel Light himself didn't last long in Victoria square, being moved to Montefiore Hill, just 32 years later.

Kingston's statue fared a little better and was moved a few years ago from the north-western corner of Victoria square's southern half, to the south-eastern corner of the square's northern half.

Follow Friday @Stereopublic a quiet Adelaide success
Congratulations to the inventor Jason Sweeney!

ARTIST Jason Sweeney hates crowds and detests noise - so much so he has developed a smartphone app that maps a city's quietest spaces.

It turns out the 41-year-old South Australian isn't the only one with an aversion to volume.

After launching in Adelaide in March, his participatory art project, Stereopublic - the Crowdsourcing Quiet, is turning heads worldwide.

"The idea is that people find places and submit the location, which then gets geo-tagged and put on to a map," Mr Sweeney said.

He says peace and quiet can be found in alleyways, carparks and gardens as well as on rooftops.

The project won 2012's TED Prize City 2.0, given to individuals with a bold vision.

In 1987, Compuserve begatteth Image Format 87A.

Image Format 87A begatteth Graphics Interchange Format or GIF (rhymes with a certain brand of peanut butter, the video history above helpfully points out).

The proliferations of free online GIF generators begatteth the countless annoying, smarmy, boneheaded animated loops you’ve seen junking up emails, profile pictures, and MySpace pages.

Church Block 2009 Cab Sav-Shiraz-Merlot
Church Block was the first wine the late Greg Trott produced under the Wirra Wirra label back in 1972.  He took the name from one of the original vineyards, which runs next to the small Bethany Church (est. 1854) across the road from Wirra Wirra's centruay old ironstone cellars.  Over four decades, the Church Block label has become an Australian favourite, consistently offering a smooth, soft red wine that balances the complexity sought by aficionados, with the approachability desired by those seeking pure drinking pleasure.

The 2009 selection of Cabernet Sauvignon (51%), Shiraz (29%) and Merlot (20%) is another masterful blend.  Matured in 70% French oak and 30% American oak barriques for 18 months, it is rich in fruit to enjoy its youth, but with the structure to develop for a decade under careful cellaring.

Andrés Segovia - The song of the guitar
The documentary was made in 1976 by the South African-born filmmaker Christopher Nupen. Segovia was 84 years old at the time. When he was a child living in Granada, Segovia loved to bring his guitar to the Alhambra and play for friends. “It was here,” he says in the film, “that I opened my eyes to the beauty of nature and art. To be here is to feel oneself to be near, very near, paradise.” Segovia is often described as the father of modern classical guitar.
...
In the film, Segovia reminisces about his early days in Grenada and his happy discovery of the guitar. He plays ten pieces, all beautifully filmed in the courtyards of the Alhambra:

“Capricho Catalán” by Isaac Albéniz
“La Maja de Goya” by Enrique Granados
“Torre Bermeja” by Isaac Albéniz
“Sonata in E Minor” by Domenico Scarlatti“Minuet” by Jean-Philippe... more »

Listen to Iggy & The Stooges’ New Album Ready to Die — Online For a Limited Time
It’s probably fair to say that Iggy Pop is the Keith Richards of punk. He’d probably hate the comparison, but given his superhuman survival skills in an arena that turns lesser mortals to mush, it seems apt. And now, at 66 years old, Pop and the remaining Stooges—James Williamson, Scott Asheton, and the great Mike Watt (replacing Ron Asheton)—have released a new album, their first since 2007’s The Weirdness.

Unlike the Stones, The Stooges don’t rest on their laurels. Listen to “Burn” above and tell me this isn’t as raw power as Raw Power. Pop’s voice has deepened considerably, his youthful machismo tempered into apocalyptic doomsaying. But he’s still got the cocked-hip gravitas and full-frontal grimace that carried him through well over three decades of boom-bust-boom rockswagger. Wanna hear more?... more »

The Rolling Stones Live in Hyde Park, 1969: The Complete Film
As the Rolling Stones gear up for their first full tour in five years, we take you back to a more innocent time, when the band was young and the tickets were not $500 each.

The year was 1969. The hippie counterculture was still in bloom, and the Stones were at a moment of transition. The band was in the process of finishing its Let it Bleed album at Olympic Studios in London without founder and multi-instrumentalist Brian Jones, who was asked to leave the group in early June because of his escalating drug problem and increasingly difficult personality. The Stones replaced Jones with the talented guitarist Mick Taylor. Eager to get rolling again, the group asked a promoter to organize a free music festival in Hyde Park, with the Stones at the top of the bill.

Far-reaching cybersecurity bill CISPA passes House despite civil liberty concerns
The Free Press Action Fund called CISPA “dangerous.” The Fund’s Policy Director Matt Wood said in a press release, “We are disappointed that the bill’s sponsors once again ignored the overwhelming opposition to this dangerous bill by the public, civil liberties advocates and even the White House.”

“CISPA would still obliterate our privacy laws and chill free expression online,” Wood continued. “The few amendments made to the legislation do not address all the concerns highlighted by the White House and by the representatives who stood up against CISPA this week.
