Nice to see Kansas City's Ashley Hand getting a shout-out in this piece about cities hiring Chief Innovation Officers. What she wants to work on:
"Making more city data available to businesses that want to use it is one of her goals....Governments are huge repositories of mapping and public transportation information, for example. But they generally don't do a good job of sharing it with the public or businesses that want to refashion it into an app or web site.
Other ideas on Hand's to-do list include finding a better way track the cost of providing certain city services, encouraging civic engagement and improving digital literacy in the community. Another is to figure out how Google Fiber, an initiative by Google to wire the city with high-speed Internet, can help businesses and provide economic development."

Always fun to wake up and find people vigorously defending mediocrity, claiming that today's Internet speeds are just fine. Helpfully, the author of this article (from Comcast) provides his email address to anyone who might have a different point of view.

Fancy being an Australian time traveller?
I have just been sent this fabulous web page to explore the ancient history of Australia. Based on the hugely successful +ABC Australia TV series The Time Travellers Guide, you can nonchalantly browse billions of years at your leisure. Press play when the yen grabs you and connect with the past!
A lot of fun.

My hero, +Susan Crawford in +The New York Times on the lack of competition in broadband: "High-capacity fiber connections to homes and businesses are not just a social good, but a business imperative, she says, and the lack of them will cripple American efforts to compete in a global economy." (This goes for you too, Australia!)

This is indeed the best (and funniest) reaction to Google Glass yet. If you think +Ron Richards needs his own pair, re-share and let +Project Glass know. He gets my vote.

May 18th is International Museum Day, so each day this week we're going to be highlighting some of Street View's trips to these treasure troves of culture, art and history as we go indoors with Museum-view. We'll be using the hash tag #museumview , if you'd like to contribute your own finds.
Today's scene shows the splendor of The State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg, Russia. Click on the following link to be taken to the Street View image where you can explore further. http://goo.gl/maps/1TgMl #streetview #internationalmuseumday
If you'd like to explore this museum in more detail, check out the +Google Art Project website for even more treats. http://www.googleartproject.com/collection/the-state-hermitage-museum/museumview/

Two things to love about this review. One is that someone's going to take the p*** out of it for using a sentence like this without any sort of irony: "We’ll be much better off with the skirt steak, poached with hay in extreme slow motion for two days."
Second is that this is clearly a temple at which I as a Pinot lover need to go pay my respects. "We could splash around in Burgundy’s kiddie pool, with a 2007 premier cru Nuits-St.-Georges from Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier, whose wines induce spasms of mysticism in pinot noir fanatics."

My Adventure Teaching with Glass
As a Glass Explorer, my goal is to transform the way I teach science, making every moment a teachable moment. With the help of +CERN and +Project Glass, I've begun pursuing my goal in the most spectacular way - teaching a class of physics students from halfway around the world while touring the Large Hadron Collider. CHI 2013 Day 4: Vint Cerf and Ubiquitous Computing
The last day of CHI 2013 has finished, bringing to a close four days of talks, panel discussions, and around 400 paper presentations. The latest research in fields ranging from mobile text input design to collaborative creation to spatial interfaces was on exhibition, showcasing the innovation across academia and industry that strives to make our integration with computing devices seamless and impactful. With such a plethora of research on how we interact with computing devices, and by extension the internet, it seemed only fitting that the closing plenary talk was given by Googler +vint cerf. Read on to hear his views on Human Computer Interaction, and his responses to questions from the audience.
Drawing on the the various themes presented at CHI 2013, Vint believes our cognitive sense of computing will change due to ... more »

Google Fiber divides users into 'the fast' and 'the furious'
Every day is a beautiful day in the fiberhood.
The chosen ones in Kanas City, Austin and Provo are getting Internet connections that are 100 times faster than average at very low prices, thanks to Google's Fiber project.
Unfortunately, you and I don't live there. So we're stuck in a bandwidth backwater.
Google Fiber is making people mad. And that's the right emotion in the face of the incredible waste of time and money and opportunity that takes place every day that goes by while we're held back by yesterday's Internet speeds.
Here's how Google's brilliant Fiber project will change everything.

Do You Realize How Powerful Hangouts Are?
You can use them to build a massive audience!
If you're at all familiar with the amazing +Daria Musk, you'll know that she was the first to take advantage of Google's new Hangouts when it was released.
Because she "got it", she's now built an awesome following, spoken at TED and booked a Verizon commercial! And that's only touching the surface!
Check out this post from +Copyblogger to learn how to build an audience with Google+ Hangouts!

I just got my Google Glass last night, and it's been a long time since a tech gadget has had me grinning ear to ear so often. I was at the #tech4dem event, and let +Marci Harris and +Macon Phillips try on my Glass. Both of them quickly got the same big grin!
It's not at all what people expect! It's a magical experience. I haven't yet been quite able to put my finger on why it feels that way, but I think it's the immediacy. Rather than fumbling for your phone, then opening the camera app, you can take a picture or a video with a touch, and share it with another touch. You can also talk to the device, taking pictures, doing google searches, getting directions, or sending emails or texts, without ever touching the devices. (You can wake it up with a touch or by tossing your head slightly.)

This is a little experiment with a viola and Glass. I created a song by layering short video loops, improvising melodies, then I pieced it all together into a small orchestra. #throughglass

From +Washington Post: "If all goes according to plan, a gigabit future means that America will remain one of the most attractive places in the world to be an innovator. However, the gigabit future is not just about speed for the sake of speed. After all, you don’t need gigabit connectivity to check e-mail or post social media status updates. You do need gigabit speeds, though, to handle high bandwidth activities that have not been invented yet. Innovators, as Genachowski points out, have always been able to take advantage of increased network capacity."

Hi Glass Explorers!!! So I have seen some posts lately with people trying to organize and figure out where everyone is coming from. Great idea by the way, cause I am looking forward to connecting with you on G+ as well as those coming to NY to pick up your glass.
Anyways I thought I would also try something a little different and hope that you will participate. I have created a Map for Glass Explorers.

So here are the steps for those of you who may have not created maps or added locations.
1. Click on the link. (obviously, it should have the map I created called Glass Explorers) On the left hand side you should see the Map title as well as a big Red edit button (crossing my fingers)

Thank you, Andrea Siegel and Ira Glass, for pointing out how Bob Ross and other speakers can produce "ASMR" -- autonomous sensory meridian response -- which is this crazy mellow tingly feeling you get from certain, usually breathy-whispery, speakers on radio or TV. I used to look forward to watching Bob Ross's how-to art shows on PBS when I was home sick as a kid because it would produce this incredible mellow tingly calm, which was the best antidote to the aches and stuffiness of a cold.
Have you experienced this super-mellow feeling before? Which speaker did it for you?
