PPC Ads Don't Cannibalize Organic Search Listings

One theory that some search marketers hold is that purchasing Google AdWords does not make financial sense because the ads will cannibalize organic listings. The theory supposes that the two forces, AdWords and SEO, are killing each other, and it is a bad strategy to spend money on both at the same time.

As an experiment, Google "paused" search ads to measure the effect that such a cessation had on organic search result clicks. What the study found was that users did not suddenly start clicking the natural results in the absence of AdWords results.

Control the ads you see with ‘Mute this Ad’

Google have recently announced that they are introducing a ‘mute this ad’ button for ads on their Google Display Network.

The ‘mute this ad’ button will be in the form of a small [x], which will appear beside display ads.  The user then has the chance to click this button in order stop that ad from appearing.  Users are then led to a confirmation page, in case users click the [x] by mistake.  

So far, the ‘mute this ad’ button has been introduced for ads based on remarketing and interest categories.

If you want to get the most out of your Google ads, you will want them to include links to various pages of your website, rather than one link to the main landing page. Luckily, Google has provided the sitelinks ad extension feature, which enables you to show customers the various services you offer, with links directing them to more info.

If your ads are appearing at the top or bottom (rather than the side) of the Google search results pages, web searchers will be able to see your sitelinks. It is possible to include up to ten different sitelinks to be displayed with your ad.

SEO Tip: Don't over optimise your page content

There is no magic number when it comes to keyword density and the best rule of thumb is to never overdo it (ie. if it reads like it's spam, it will be considered as spam). Read through your content and include the sorts of words your customers use, especially if there are different ways of describing what you do. For example, tree removal is exactly the same thing as tree lopping, but everyone looks for this service differently so it would be wise to include both words in your page copy to capture traffic from both search queries.

How Google Reviews Ads for Safety

Because of the sheer volume of Google ads that are added to the Internet hourly, Google has set a complex system into place to help monitor these ads for safety. Google uses this review system to help protect Internet users from scams, counterfeit goods, unfair or unclear billing practices and malicious downloads that could damage computers.
