A few years ago we took a side trip to the Grand Canyon when we were hiking in Zion and Bryce. It was heavy overcast and snowed on us at one point. It is on my hiking bucket list. Someday. #hiking

The new Google+ Auto Enhance for images is ON by Default! I am turning it off. Google certainly rolled out some great new tech yesterday but this is troublesome for us photographers who obsess over getting our images to just where we want them.

Paraprosdokians are figures of speech in which the latter part of a sentence or phrase is surprising or unexpected and frequently humorous. Winston Churchill loved them.
1. Where there's a will, I want to be in it.
2. The last thing I want to do is hurt you. But it's still on my list.
3. Since light travels faster than sound, some people appear bright until you hear them speak.
4. If I agreed with you, we'd both be wrong.
5. We never really grow up, we only learn how to act in public.
6. War does not determine who is right - only who is left.
7. Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit.. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad.
8. To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism. To steal from many is research.
9. I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.

silence
there is no thing I know
silent as a blanket of snow,
past the woods in the deep country.
no thing as still as mountain upon mountain
reflected in an iced bird bowl,
silence the winter soul.

Being a big fan of Chinese/Japanese painting and printmaking I have seen this same parallel to photography. Good to see it described here: http://www.luminous-landscape.com/the_synthesis_of_chinese_landscape_painting_and_photography.shtml

Here is a wonderful presentation about my favorite, historical Yosemite painter. A zenful and calming viewpoint, much needed after the events of the past week... Enjoy.

Images That "Sizzle and Fizzle" Versus "Keepers" and "Sleepers"
It happens to me all the time. I’m excited by what I see on location and hopeful about the images I’m making. Afterwards the final results aren’t as exciting as I had hoped they would be. I rarely leave a location with confidence that I have truly excellent images. I can phone in competent and even good most of the time, but getting to great is another matter entirely.
It’s important to know the difference between good and great. I measure my current successes against my past success – I’m always trying to raise the bar. If the images you’re making aren’t making the cut for you, I’d take that as a sign that you’re being more discriminating and based on that I would bet that means you’ve got many more images in your portfolio that are better. That’s excellent! Plus, the world doesn’t... more »

Antelope Canyon - got a mirrorless camera? No permit for you!
I spent a lovely hour at Lower Antelope Canyon near Page in Arizona this morning. Antelope Canyon is a famous slot canyon carved by flash floods which have exposed beautifully coloured rock walls with grooved surfaces. The canyon itself is a narrow passageway about two stories deep and around a couple of meters wide. In places you have to squeeze your self through, but unlike caving there's rarely a feeling of claustrophobia. If you can climb down some narrow stairs, you'll have no problem paying a visit.
Antelope Canyon is probably most famous for beams of sunlight, which at the right time of day and year can create dramatic-looking tubes of light, shining down through the fine dust. As such it's become a mecca for photographers and tourists alike.
There's actually two Antelope Canyons: Upper and... more »
