Spring dress
I walk every day past this not very special tree. Today it surprised me with its branches full of flowers. A hymn to spring. Happiness for everyone.

Augmented reality demo
The folks from Noser implemented an augmented reality app on an Android phone that allows the user to turn lamps on or off by pointing the camera at them and selecting an action to perform. They did this using our digitalstrom technologies.
The application detects a pattern in the surface of the lamp and uses this to identify the lamp spatially. It is amazing at how effective it is at identifying the lamps.

The still ongoing story in XKCD
This page has taking all snapshots and allows you to see what how the story evolved.
The comic is also an illustration of passing time. From the spectator's point of view, each image is meaningless by itself ; the only possible perception of time is to "wait for it" and see how things evolve. Thus, time is in the spectator's perception, not in each individual frame.
As of this writing, after more than 670 hours, the story is still ongoing - even after many new, different comics have been posted on the front page. It was initially updating every 30 minutes, but is now updating on the hour.
How do you think the story will end?

Making engineering jobs attractive for girls
The Girl's Day in Germany has the goal of getting young teenager girls to know what engineers do and hopefully decide for a technical career.
The day will be held tomorrow all through Germany. Today there was a preparation event in the Bundeskanzlei where several girls went to look at the the career possibilities in engineering.
We at digitalstrom were lucky to be one of the companies that could show how interesting it is to be an engineer. Some of our female colleagues were there showing our technologies.
Almost forgot to mention, Ms Merkel came by our little booth as well

Ever heard of openMaterials?
Through a TED talk I discovered this great community trying to become a wiki of modern materials. From their site:
In broad terms the aims of openMaterials are:
- Collect interesting resources (news, techniques, theory, artworks, videos, etc.) and share them via links and blog posts
- Publish in-depth articles and interviews
- Create a repository (wiki) of relevant materials, tools and techniques. eg. - descriptions, physical properties, what it’s good for and what it’s not, tricks and hacks, where to get it, who’s using it, who’s improving it
- Experiment and document experiments, and share them via how-tos and tutorials (text and video)
Check them out: http://openmaterials.org/

My smart home checks the health of my refrigerator
Some of you might be familiar with the case of the refrigerator open door where all food in there goes bad. It happened to me a few years ago when one of the kids together with his friends "inadvertently" plugged off the big freezer in the basement.
Wouldn't it be great if my smart home could watch over the refrigerator for me? This is indeed possible. Every refrigerator has a "heartbeat" that can bee seen in the energy consumption over time. The pattern of energy consumption is the compressor turning on and off to cool down the contents on the freezer. The frequency and lenght of this pattern depends on the type of the compressor, on the ammount of food inside of the refrigerator and also on the difference of temperatures between the freezer and the external air.
Provided this data is av... more »

Can my smart home protect itself from hail?
The other day I received my yearly invoice from my home insurance company. With the bill they included a brochure describing how the amount of damage done by hail in buildings has increased in the last years.
And this is not only related to any change in weather patterns, which is difficult to prove. The main reason is that modern homes tend to have larger windows compared to the homes we used to build some decades years ago. This results in larger surfaces that can be affected during a hail storm.
You might wonder, why not just have a rain/wind/hail sensor mounted in your home. Well, the bad news is that there is no such thing as a local hail sensor. And the main reason is if you can sense hail, it is already too late. So the only proper way is to have a service warn the home that hail is on its way.
