Hahaha! This is great satire with a lot of great one-liners! Don't let the title turn you off and cause you to skip it. microblogging = the concept of blogging without trying too hard. "You’ll notice the Tumblr logo also has a cool period at the end, as though you’re supposed to say it, drop whichever microphone you’re holding and walk off stage." ☺

Very cool and fun game that uses Google Street View. You are shown five different Street View scenes. From looking at the picture, place a pin on a world map where you think it is. Closer you are, the more points you get.

Just like how "hacker" is not always a synonym for "computer criminal", "nationalist" is not a synonym for "racist" (or fascist, or extremist). Well written intellectual analysis of Japan PM Abe and his book explaining his liberal aka civic nationalism.

I love sci-fi inspired '70s architecture. All the rounded walls, organic/aerodynamic geometric shapes.
It's a shame there are only two photographs in this article.

留漫。【卒業制作】 | ゼン・ミガワ #pixiv
This is a great interesting and funny manga/comic written by an American. It's a first person account of being a overseas exchange student (ryūgakusei; 留学生) in Japan attempting to become a Japanese graphic novel artist (mangaka; 漫画家).
Sorry, Japanese Only. (you can still enjoy the art and get a vague gist of the story from the pictures)

Note the clever use of the adjective "violent" and the conjunction "or" in WP +Max Fisher 's second sentence:
"… with citizens leading sometimes violent anti-Japanese or anti-Chinese protests …"
A less careful reader would think that the Japanese have engaged in "violent" "anti-Chinese protests". Unlike China, Japanese protesters (relatively very small in number, both in occurrences and participants, whose voice is amplified by the press) usually assemble and demonstrate in an orderly way that is protected by the constitution. Even though these protesters are mostly fringe groups, they demonstrate peacefully — albeit loudly & obnoxiously. They have not engaged in large scale rioting, looting, arson, vandalism & destruction of property, or physical assaults. The same cannot be said for those in the PRC.

Incredible colour footage of 1920s London shot by an early British pioneer of film named Claude Frisse-Greene, who made a series of travelogues using the colour process his father William - a noted cinematographer - was experimenting with. It's like a beautifully dusty old postcard you'd find in a junk store, but moving.

Tokyo Tower Illuminated in Diamond Veil Colors
This special illumination pattern is called "Diamond Veil." It can be seen for two hours on certain days (usually from 8:00pm to 10:00pm on Fridays and Saturdays but there are some exceptions. Check out the official site for the schedule if you want to make sure).

So Fedora 19 is named "Schrödinger's Cat", but it turns out that Fedora's bug reporting system can handle neither the apostrophe nor the umlaut. And they're afraid that this kind of issue will turn up in any number of other places, so the release may be renamed to "Schrodingers Cat".
I'd laugh, if I believed that I had a handle on all the Unicode issues in my own web site. It's surprising how hard this stuff can be.

Americans who relinquish their citizenship for Japanese are supposed to end up on this list. Everybody knows that since 2006, the list has been horribly inaccurate (misspellings, duplicates, & omissions).
Recently, the amount of people on this list versus the amount of people who are known to have relinquished/renounced (by comparing other countries lists and other lists like the FBIs stats) have become so large that some people are accusing the Feds of deliberately under-reporting for whatever reason (I blame simple analog paperwork mishandling and bureaucracy). This list is supposed to be five times as large as it is here.
Anyway, it has been quite some time since I've lost my U.S. nationality, so I suspect I'll never get on this list.
I came close, though. There is a 井上 (INOUYE) on this quarter's list, but it's not me.

Notice the careful use of vague words and the insertion of adjectives that reflect the reporters opinion rather than true fact: "earlier suggestion" (what exactly were the "suggestions"? what exact words were used?) ... "hawkish current prime minister" ("hawkish" means "advocating war or a belligerently threatening diplomatic policy" ... when has PM Abe done anything other than advocate that Japan has a right to defense — something that is currently ambiguous and debated due to the wording of the current Constitution?)
NYT Fackler chose the word 'hawkish' because he wants American readers to think that PM Abe advocates war and aggression.
Later in the article, NYT Fackler breaks from other news sources and says the PM Abe said the "definition of 'invasion' was relative". Other news sources used the word ... more »

I've seen Aerosmith twice in Japan (Osaka Dome), and they do put on a good show and their Japanese fans do love them. Steven Tyler has even brought an interpreter on stage at points during the show when he has a more personal message for their fans.
However, despite what the article's quote says, they are not bigger than the Beatles in Japan.

I've passed politicians campaigning in front of the train stations during rush hour for years. I instinctively ignored them, because I couldn't vote. Now that I can vote (for the House of Councillors election this summer, and possibly a referendum on constitutional amendment), I pay attention.
One LDP person noticed last week, and asked me if I wanted to join. "Are you over 18 and a Japanese national?" Check. "Are you a member of any other party?" No. "Do you believe in the principles of the LDP?"
Anyway, I never knew if you paid attention to them they would actually approach you (if they're not busy).

Very interesting mea culpa from Kurtz where he allows other journalists to grill him on his hypocrisy regarding being a media watchdog. Not just for Jason Collins, but for his past pattern of behavior as well.

It seems like the new Kim regime reacts more to foreign media and is sensitive to the media saying that everything the DPRK does is done cynically for attention and is merely a bluff.
For example, when the media said "oh, don't worry about anything DPRK says or does with missiles. As long as Kaesong keep operating, we have nothing to worry, because that's where their source of hard cash is.
So the DPRK effectively shuts down Kaesong to prove the media wrong.
After kidnapping arresting the American, the media said, "oh, don't worry. That's just DPRK's way of getting attention and getting face time with a famous foreign politician."
So DPRK says "forget it. We don't want the attention, press. He does hard time. We don't need no Bill Clinton or Jimmy Carter."

Compared to the U.S., drive-thru fast food is nowhere as near as ubiquitous in Japan, but it does exist.
In the U.S., outside of NYC, it seems like every restaurant that doesn't have waiters/waitresses has a drive-thru.

Tokyo Asakusa's Hanayashiki , the oldest amusement park in Japan. Opened in 1853 for Commodore Perry and his infamous "black ships" as a flower park. (You can still see the influence today). It was one of the first zoos in Japan, as it used to exhibit exotic animals such as tigers. Some of the rides have been operating since the 1950s.
