Gailen Mapes72,069Hand Picked Photographers Circles - "Unknown or Other" Camera F-H - 25 of 31Note: These circles are sorted by camera type and last name. They are split to not exceed 200 members. These circles are photographers that I admire. They have "more photos, less spam."  There have been many additions and a few drops (mostly for spam or inactivity). Be sure to get all of the circles. Share! If you miss any of the circles they can be found at: +Gailen Mapes and scroll back to November 7th for the start of this set.  (Previous complete set was published starting October 1st.)  You can also use the #handpickedcircles hash tag and sort by "recent."I am hard up against the 5000 limit. From here on, I am going to have to become rather more strict about the "spam rules." Essentially if I have to go back more than a screen on your profile before I hit original material, there is a good chance that I may drop you from the circles. Of course there will be mitigating factors...Because of the way that Google no longer presents every person who adds me to their circles to me it is quite possible that I have missed some pretty good photographers.  If I am following you, chances are that you are already in one of these circles or in my "check later" circle.  If you think you have been missed, tag a comment on one of these posts and I will check your profile out for inclusion.  Guidelines for inclusion can be found at:   https://plus.google.com/u/0/103752943025677384806/about#circleshare #circlesharing #circleoftheday   #sharedcircles   #sharedcircle #sharedpubliccircles   #fullcircleshare #addmetoyourcircles   #bestsharedcircle   #thebestcirclesongoogle #thebestcircle             #handpickedcircles             Note: the hash tag #handpickedcircles  should only be used to refer to these circles and other circles created by +Gailen Mapes .   Thanks for your cooperation.2014-11-25 14:02:17209000

Lytro Illum arrived today

Lytro have asked me to be an 'ambassador' for the camera here in Japan and the Illum turned up today from California.

Haven't had time to shoot with it yet, as it arrived this evening and I have had a busy day out shooting for a client. But, keen to get out and start shooting with it asap.

First impressions: the camera seems very well put together. The packaging was awesome too. Touch screen, menus, interface, depth assist, focus control and zoom are all very nice to use and very easy to use as well.

Have been through all the video tutorials on the Lytro website and am particularly excited about the way you can alter focus plane in 'shift' and 'swing' modes, as well as all the usual Lytro ability to alter the focus point and depth of of focus in the scene.

Aerial photography in Tokyo: Tokyo Tower, Tokyo Bay & Rainbow Bridge

This was shot towards the end of December, when +Ben Torode was good enough to offer me the spare seat in the R44 chopper he rented for an aerial photo session.

Perfect weather, a great sunset with Mount Fuji visible behind the city..... all in all a very satisfying 30mins of shooting.

Always fun to get up in a helicopter. Not just for the photos but for the unique insight it gives one of the topography, layout and sprawl of this massive city.

This frame was shot about halfway through the trip and after I had stopped shooting with the Hasselblad H4D-40. My Hassie has a CCD sensor, which is awesome for colour but it isn't great at high ISO.

Four days of being the official photographer for the Duke of Cambridge's visit to Japan

It's been an amazing experience, the past four days. Some time soon I will write up an article about the whole four days and show you some photos. I'll need to clear that article with the British Embassy and Royal Household first.

But, for now, here's a frame from one piece of the Japanese TV coverage... in which I was spotted.

The whole four days is something I will never forget. Met some great people, saw up-close how the corps of royal news photographers work, had some extraordinary experiences.... top of which, in many ways, was being in the motorcade, heading to Tokyo station to get the bullet train: police escort, screaming through Tokyo traffic, sirens blaring etc etc. Getting the train in Tokyo will never be the same again! :-)

The Blossom is Starting: in my local park with the Hasselblad 120mm Macro Lens

Blossom time is on its way again here in Tokyo and I spent a little time in my local park, Shinagawa Kumin Koen, to do some flower shootingthe other day.

I haven't really had time to do any pictures like this recently but I wanted to try out the Hasselblad HC 120mm f/4 macro lens on my H4D as I had heard so many things about it.

The lens is heavy. It's a massive lump of glass and the helicoid on the focus barrel is super long, allowing for very close focusing.

Hand-holding this thing is tough. Almost as much weight as the HC 300mm lens I have shot with a few times.

Weight for macro can be a good thing, up to a point. Weight means stability but I was pushing my [fairly good] skills to keep this baby still.

But, all the shots I made the other morning were hand-held. I find tripods and even monopods a hassle when shooting macro outdoors: too many limitations, too much time to get the lens to exactly the right spot. Hand-held is easier.

Great momo [peach] blossom and early sakura [hayazaki-zakura].

This one is momo.

My lens was about 2cm away from the flowers for this shot.

Warming light at the end of a cold day: Mari Hirao in Yoyogi Park, Tokyo

We'd been out shooting for a few hours and Mari was getting cold. Very cold. She's a brave soul and won't complain, so I have to make sure I don't push too far. Despite regular breaks to put a warm coat over her, she was shivering by the time we did this last cut in the park.

Very pleased how this came out. Unlike most of my files out of the Hasselblad H4D-40 - which I hardly ever process at all in Photoshop - this one has had a little work on it; just five minutes or less, mind you. I always try to keep my post-pro to under 10mins per picture.

This looked great with a little work on the light, the addition of a light-leak effect in Photoshop using Nik Analog Efex Pro2. Just to accentuate the backlight and make it feel a lot warmer than it was at the location.

Mari Hirao in Yoyogi Park: Hasselblad H4D, Einstein strobe

After a couple of busy weeks, I am finally getting around to posting some of these shots of Mari that I shot recently.

This was right at the end of our day. We'd done some stuff in the studio, some shots near the Olympic Stadium and these last few shots were done in the park... by my favourite tree.

Thanks to Shun for his makeup and hair styling. Thanks to Derek Makishima and +Stephanie Huynh for helping me out with the shooting. Big thanks to Mari for braving the cold.

Thanks to Hasselblad and Profoto for the opportunity, support and encouragement.

Thanks to everyone who came along and joined in.

...time I got some new jeans :-)

Come to mummy: International Forum, Tokyo

The lady creating the wonderful shadow was trying to attract her young child and over a period of a few minutes, she made a few great shapes with her body. This was the first and the best.

Patience pays off. Visiting the same location over and over again pays off.

I'd seen this moment beginning to happen and waited for it.

I've been visiting this location for 15 years now.

It never fails to disappoint and I can always find pictures I haven't taken before.

Looking down on Tokyo from Andaz, Toranomon Hills

I was at the Andaz Hotel yesterday, for a meeting with the manager. After we'd finished, he suggested I check out the view from their 52F Roof Bar.

Amazing.

Not just for the fact that you can sit out n the fresh air fifty-two floors up in Tokyo, but for the panoramic views.

Look forward to spending more time at Andaz this coming year, soaking up and sharing more of the spectacular views.

Shibuya Crossing at Night with Hasselblad H4D-40

Results of 15mins of fun in the square after a long day. Got a difficult and stressful shoot there later this week. So I've been there a lot recently, figuring things out.

It was nice last night to have a little 'me' time there with the camera.

This is one shot. There are more at the link below.

Portrait of me by one of my photography students

A shot one of my students took of me the other week, down in the passageways around Tochomae in Shinjuku.

We were doing a lesson on shooting portraits. This lady only ever gets to have her lessons at night, so part of the lesson was about finding good spots after dark in Tokyo. The passages underground around Tocho and Shinjuku Station are an amazing collection of indoor studios often with very few people around.

One SB-800 flash on the floor, pointed up into the crazy silver ceiling did all the light on me. Made a nice pattern on the floor behind me too.

Be it a pair of Doc Marten boots emblazoned with the Union Jack, a classic British car spotted in the wilds of Shinjuku or a pic of someone carrying their shopping in a bag coloured with the British flag…. we want you to start seeing and snapping them and sending the pics in.

This is a great chance for you to tune your eyes to UK FM on the photographic radio and to start getting a little obsessive about looking for the Britishness in Japan.

Some of you will doubtless heard me talk about ‘collecting things’ with my camera. It’s something I do to keep my eyes sharp, keep me visually hungry and make sure I am never going out ‘just to take SOME photos’. But that I am going out looking for certain things specifically.

You don’t have to be taking your big DSLR with you everywhere to take part. The photos could easily be shoot with a pocket camera or cellphone. They just need to be well composed, engaging, interesting, vibrant and contain something British.

This is also a great opportunity to get your photos seen if they are chosen to be part of the public events that are going on around the Duke’s visit (more details in due course!).

Contact me by mail [alfiejapanorama [atmark] gmail.com] or private message me for more details of how, where and when to send your photos.

Happy snapping!___

Bullet train passing through suburbs of Tokyo: Hasselblad HC 300mm lens

This is another one from this evening's session up on my roof.

We're lucky enough to have a view across to the west of town, where the Sanyo Shinkansen heads out on its run down to Yokohama, Nagoya and Osaka.

The mountains in the background are on the far west side of Tokyo.

Damn cold on the roof today.

Keeping the camera still in the wind was a chore.

Love the perspective compression and sharpness on this lens. Awesome piece of glass to play with.

Long exposure with Hasselblad H4D-40 and HC 300mm f/4.5

It was cold on the roof when I took this but worth the chilly air to get a few test shots with the HC 300mm lens.

Part of the Ambassador Programme which I am involved in this year for Hasselblad in Japan means being able to borrow and shoot with whatever gear I would like to.

The 300mm telephoto has been on my list of things to try for a while. I have shot a few times with it since having the H4D-40 but this was the first time I tried it out with any sort of long exposures at night.

Haven't figured whether you can stop it down too far yet. Some lenses get soft if you stop them down too far. Doesn't seem to be the case with this.

Keeping it still on the tripod in the high wind was a little bit of a lottery. In the end I just waited for a gap in the gusts of wind.

Lexar Image Rescue software for the win!

Had a student on a recent workshop who was swapping cards between his camera and the Hasselblad. The Hassie started formatting his card, because I pressed a button by mistake thinking it was ok to format the card..... which had 500 images on it that the person hadn't backed-up.

I know the Lexar software is good and that if you do not take another picture on a mistakenly formatted card, that you will get them all back. For a while the scan showed up nothing. Now the pics are all coming back.

Lessons and notes.....
1. Make sure you ask the person whose card you about to format whether it's ok to do so.
2. Try and back up the images from your camera to the computer. Not a good idea to leave two weeks worth of images on a card.
3. If you DO format by mistake, just remember not to take another picture with the... more »

4. If you dont have it, download the free Lexar Image Rescue 4 software. It's awesome.___

Children's portrait photography: my son Charlie, Heiwajima, Tokyo

Charlie and I went out yesterday and had a cycle, a walk and some fun down by the little beach at Heiwajima. It's about 10 or 15mins in the bicycle. Nice place. Kid's playground, a little beach. Good for chilling out and not so far from home.

Charlie is always asking me stuff like 'Did you take a picture of that?', when he sees something interesting. He's into the whole photography thing, it seems. Plus, he's very patient when it comes to having his own photo taken.

Seiko Kashiwagi for helping me organise everything.

William Penrice for lots of things but especially for kissing that dog and hugging me and keeping me sane through the pain of an infected tooth during the event.

Finally to our awesome models, Kotomi Kai and Yoshiaki Fujita. Thanks for working so professionally, putting up with my demands and for delivering such superb skills.

Ladies and gentlemen, give yourselves a huge pat on the back.

This was the first multi-day Hasselblad Discovery event. It will by no means be the last. Number two is in the planning stages already.

Sunset over Frankfurt: panorama shot from east of the city

Been trying to remember exactly where in East Frankfurt this was but I can't. It was shot at the end of a day that myself and art director had been driving around ta large area to the south and east of Frankfurt.

I wanted to get a sunset with the central business district in the background. I spotted somewhere on the map that would give a decent view of it.

The whole area [behind me in the photo] was being re-developed with smart housing. Opposite me was an older area that had seemed, so far, to escape the prettification process.

Was a great spot to end the day.

This was shot from the roof of the property developer's office, which was a smart little building made out of three re-purposed shipping containers.

New York City Skyline Panorama

It's been just over a year since I was on the road shooting for Haneda Airport. The trip took me to Germany, France, the UK, USA, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and Dubai.

I was shooting a few things, including some fashion and also these very large panoramas, which were displayed on a 16metre screen at the new international terminal at Haneda, Tokyo.

This one was shot from Paulus Hook, NJ, and consisted of ten vertical shots each of which was bracketed over five frames. So there are 50 shots in this panorama.

The original panorama was around 45,000 pixels across. For the 4K display at Haneda each shot was down-rezzed to 16,320 pixels wide at 72dpi.

Derek Makishima: one of my fellow Hasselblad Japan Ambassadors for 2015

I shot this pic of Derek just before Christmas, out in the street in Harajuku. We'd just met that day, had some lunch and popped out in the streets for a bit with a Hasselblad H4D-60 camera, the 100mm lens and a ProFoto D1 light to have some fun.

Derek's a lovely guy and a very talented photographer. We've started doing some workshops for Hasselblad together and there are eleven more of those at least to come in 2015; some will be one-day events in Tokyo, some in Osaka and around the country. There will also be some longer, weekend events. The first of which looks set to be on the coast and in the forests of Chiba in the spring.

Be sure to check Derek's website out:

Messing with the Paul C. Buff Einstein light earlier this evening and taking some shots of my youngest son, Charlie.

Shot with the Hasselblad H4D-40 and 100mm f/2.2 lens.

Parabolic umbrella on the Einstein. Set up behind and above the his head, pointing down at 45degrees, with a reflector on his lap. Kind of reverse clam-shell lighting.

Fashion photography in Japan: Shinyong at the haikyo

Slowly getting around to working through a backlog of personal work; editing, getting things online.

This was shot back at the beginning of December, with +Neville Antoinette and his wonderful clothes.

We headed up to a haikyo [abandoned town] a few hours' drive out of Tokyo. We didn't have tome to explore all the buildings and the light was fading by the time we ended the shoot in the second of the buildings we chose for the photography.

Big thanks to +Shinyong Lee for her modelling, concentration and professionalism despite the long drive and the cold weather.

I always find it's important to give the model a story to work with. The location was very much in contrast to the clothing. If we'd just stood Shinyong in the location and said 'look at the camera' or 'look over there'... I just don't think it would have worked. With the idea she'd come back in time and was somewhere that, perhaps, her ancestors had lived or visited.... it all seemed to work. She got into the role and delivered the goods.

She never fails to deliver the goods, by the way :-)

Aerial photography of Tokyo: Tokyo Tower

This was one of about 20 frames I shot with the Hasselblad H4D-40 during the helicopter flight on 19th December.

The H4D is a great camera but it's a CCD and that means awesome colours, amazing dynamic range but not great high ISO performance. The H5D-50C is much better in that department, with its CMOS sensor.

But, not bad..... for a camera that with the 100mm HC f/2.2 lens weighs in at about 8lbs.

Shooting from a chopper usually means 1/250th sec and above. With a lighter camera you can get away with a little less.

Great view. The Nikon D800E took over about three or four frames after this....

Been shooting a little more with the Hasselblad H5D-50C recently and this shot was taken off of the roof of our flat in Omori, Tokyo, just a few days ago.

Lovely dynamic range on this camera and a great response to colour. Although in many respects, despite the shortcomings with high ISO, I still sort of prefer the colours and range of the H4D-40.

Happy New Year to Everyone!

Couple of hours to go until 2015. This year was pretty good, a few downs but a lot of ups as well. Got a lot of good vibes about 2015 being a great year.

Would like to wish all my family and friends the very best for the coming year. May it bring us all something special and memorable.

Also want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who commissioned me, employed me, supported me, helped me, assisted me and came to my workshops in 2014. Your faith, commitment, time and involvement was very much appreciated.

Photographically, I look forward to making more great pictures myself and helping others enjoy and get more out of their photography in 2015.

On a general front, I will do my best to continue to be a good husband, father, brother and friend.

I especially look forward to the honour of being a Hasselblad Ambassador in this coming year. Thanks, William and Seiko and Nagai-san at Hasselblad for your trust and support this year. Next year promises to be exciting. You can count on me to put my back into the role and not let you down.

All that remains is to watch some Doraemon with little Charlie, have a drink and some sushi with Hiromi and then ring in the new year down at the shrine with a good friend.

Have a great evening everyone. May this soon-to-be-upon-us year of the sheep [my daughter's year] be a rousing success.___

My eldest son, Joe

We went out to do some shopping today and I got this quick shot of Joe as we were heading to a friend's house for the evening.

I like hanging with Joe. He's not just my son, he really feels like my best friend.

Helicopter flight over Tokyo at dusk

Big thanks to +Ben Torode for the opportunity to fill the second seat in the chopper for yesterday's flight.

Perfect weather. Perfect light. Not so much wind as earlier in the week, which was nice... as we had the doors off of the chopper and although it was cold, the wind earlier in the week would have made it much colder and the flight much more difficult.

This shot is looking towards a sunset over Mount Fuji with Shinjuku in the left foreground.

Fashion photography & haikyo in Japan

Something I have been wanting to do more of is to shoot fashion in abandoned buildings here in Japan.

Last week, myself and +Shinyong Lee  took a drive for a few hours outside of town - together with make-up artist, Katsu, and the designer of the clothes you see in this shot; +Neville Antoinette.

The location is a secret but it's fair drive outside Tokyo, two hours or more.

One of the issues with shooting in places like this, where the clothes are a major contrast to the location itself, is to come up with an idea or an image that I can put into the model's head, to give her something to work with and imagine. Otherwise it's just 'model in funky clothes in abandoned building'. Which of course is plenty cool enough but...

Anyway, our theme here was that Shinyong was a time-traveller. Maybe she'd meant to go somewhere else in time but ended up here by mistake. However, she begins to feel that there is a connection to this place... and discovers that way back, maybe a couple of hundred years or more ago, her family were here.

There are a lot more photos to come from this shoot. This is a just a little taster.

Great shoot. Great clothes. Great model. Great location.

Autumn in Tokyo: leaves on the lake, Hibiya Park

Over the past few years I have seen Japan change from a country with four distinct seasons, into one where the changes and timing of the seasons is less so.

It's meant the arrival of autumn in Tokyo has been late and then for a very short period of time. There are trees across the city which still haven't changed colour at all.

Yesterday I finally had some time to spend with the trees, on this occasion in Hibiya Park.

Hibiya is not an enormous park but - for one right in the centre of the city -  it tends to get the sunlight until almost the last. Certain sections of the park getting shafts of very late afternoon sun right up until it's set.

I always get reminded if the wonderful work of Ernst Haas during autumn in Japan. His work continues to remain an inspiration for me.

Chris Burkard's video in Iceland ( which you can see here https://www.lytro.com/iceland/  )was a lovely way of me beginning to get excited about re-seeing and re-shooting the Tokyo and Japan I have been shooting for the last 15 years with 'traditional' cameras.

I always gag a bit with new phrases like the one Lytro uses to describe its photos, 'living pictures', but in this case I really think it's a good choice of words.

My life with the camera has, for a long time, been about seeing in shallow depth-of-field. I have had a f/1.2 lens since I was ten years old and the first camera I had - a Zorki4 rangefinder - had an f/2 lens on it.

The idea of now going out and being able to make photos that still have that shallow depth of field but that also allow the viewer to experience the scene as if they were, like me, stood in it... re-focussing through the scene from my original point of focus to others... that all seems very interesting.

I think Burkard makes that point fairly well in the Iceland video. He has been there 15 times, with a variety of different format cameras. The Illum, for him, felt very different and allowed him - so he says - to capture shots that felt as close to the living experience of being in the spot as he had ever been able to get with any camera.

So, we'll see.....

I'm looking forward to shooting in Tsukiji with the Illum, looking forward to shooting in a lot of the places I have enjoyed shooting over the past 15 years in Tokyo. And looking forward to seeing how the camera can re-invigorate me about those locations and about photography in general. I believe it has the potential to be very interesting.

Big shout to +Casey McCallister for giving me the opportunity to test the camera out and shoot some stuff here in Japan with it.

I'll be doing a fashion shoot next week with the Illum, shooting Tsukiji fishmarket with it very soon as well and am heading down to the lakes around Mt. Fuji sometime over Christmas. Really excited abut using the Illum in these places and more over the coming weeks.___

Shooting for Aston Martin Racing & Hasselblad Japan

One of the shots I got the other week whilst shooting with Hasselblad Japan at the WEC 6 Hours of Fuji race.

Was very impressed how the H5D-50c coped with this sort of subject matter. Shot this at 800ISO and with the 80mm f/2.8 AF lens set to manual-focus, prefocused on the area of the track where the cars were passing.

Shot four or five and was trying to time it so that I got the car at the end of the position box, used when the cars line up for the start. Nailed it with this one... so that the lines of the box look like speed streaks coming from the rear of the car.

Great day out. Lots of fun to shoot with the H5D-50c and the CFV50 back on an old 500CM camera.

Big thanks to Aston Martin Racing for all of their help and hospitality on the day.

Nice piece. Like the disparate selection of photos they decided to feature.

Big thanks to +Nok Chan at Photoblog.HK for the opportunity.

In passing: lady in the subway, Tokyo

Haven't been doing much personal photography recently but got these two snaps yesterday, heading from Omotesando to Shimbashi  on the subway.

Shooting the D800 without the grip at the moment, for anything where I don't need a big lens or a lot of vertical shooting... because I sliced into the base of my little finger with a broken glass, whilst washing up. Very painful. Had five stitches and it's been proving quite a challenge to shoot this week.

Hasselblad workshop in Kyushu, Japan

The very car we have for our workshop in Kyushu with Hasselblad Japan at the end of this month.

Still a place left, due to a cancellation....

Hit me up for details. It's gonna be a blast.

Models, loads of lovely cameras to play with, the car to shoot, a barbecue on the beach.... and plenty more to look forward to.
