More dubious research from OECD   #Education #EdTech #Computers
In a study of education systems in more than 30 countries, the OECD has found students who use computers very frequently at school do "a lot worse" academically than students who use them moderately.
For many years we've had OECD league tables dominating the education agenda: “By all means, learn from what others are doing in their own schools. But don't allow league tables of dubious provenance to dictate how we decide to educate our children” according to a critical report of the OECD in the Guardian in 2013  http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2013/dec/01/dont-let-pisa-league-tables-dictate-schooling. Finland, the most consistent high performer, has the least selective, most comprehensive system in the world, and it has no inspectors, no exams before 18 and a national curriculum that isconfi... more »

I’m just a G+ lurker at the moment! #AntiSocialMedia
I’m still loving G+ and tuning in every day to read the feed. I’m still getting most of the interesting news and views here on G+ from the people I have chosen to follow and thank you for posting. I’ve become a bit disillusioned with social media in general to be honest. It seems that what was meant to be open and good and social has been taken over by machines, tools, algorithms and commercial interests and has become very antisocial. I read an interesting article about Facebook recently and engagement and posts has dropped by over 20% (In my experience it is much higher) I’m not surprised as the News Feed has been almost totally dominated by paid sponsorship and advertising. This has alienated both the regular users who want to see status updates from friends and family and the SME business pages who don’t get a look in when theBIG BRANDS ... more »

A brilliant and hilarious article on the murky world of start-ups
“The offices bear a striking resemblance to the Montessori preschool that my kids attended: lots of bright basic colors, plenty of toys, and a nap room with a hammock and soothing palm tree murals on the wall….
Arriving here feels like landing on some remote island where a bunch of people have been living for years, in isolation, making up their own rules and rituals and religion and language—even, to some extent, inventing their own reality. This happens at all organizations, but for some reason tech startups seem to be especially prone to groupthink.”

Easter 1916 by W. B. Yeats #Easter1916
I have met them at close of day
Coming with vivid faces
From counter or desk among grey
Eighteenth-century houses.
I have passed with a nod of the head
Or polite meaningless words,
Or have lingered awhile and said
Polite meaningless words,
And thought before I had done
Of a mocking tale or a gibe
To please a companion
Around the fire at the club,
Being certain that they and I
But lived where motley is worn:
All changed, changed utterly:
A terrible beauty is born.

That woman's days were spent
In ignorant good-will,
Her nights in argument
Until her voice grew shrill.
What voice more sweet than hers
When, young and beautiful,
She rode to harriers?

In ignorant good-will,
Her nights in argument
Until her voice grew shrill.
What voice more sweet than hers
When, young and beautiful,
She rode to harriers?
This man had kept a school
And rode our winged horse;
This other his helper and friend
Was coming into his force;
He might have won fame in the end,
So sensitive his nature seemed,
So daring and sweet his thought.
This other man I had dreamed
A drunken, vainglorious lout.
He had done most bitter wrong
To some who are near to my heart,
Yet I number him in the song;
He, too, has resigned his part
In the casual comedy;
He, too, has been changed in his turn,
Transformed utterly:
A terrible beauty is born.

Hearts with one purpose alone
Through summer and winter seem
Enchanted to a stone
To trouble the living stream.
The horse that comes from the road,
The rider, the birds that range
From cloud to tumbling cloud,
Minute by minute they change;
A shadow of cloud on the stream
Changes minute by minute;
A horse-hoof slides on the brim,
And a horse plashes within it;
The long-legged moor-hens dive,
And hens to moor-cocks call;
Minute by minute they live:
The stone's in the midst of it all.

Too long a sacrifice
Can make a stone of the heart.
O when may it suffice?
That is Heaven's part, our part
To murmer name upon name,
As a mother names her child
When sleep at last has come
On limbs that had run wild.
What is it but nightfall?
No, no, not night but death;
Was it needless death after all?
For England may keep faith
For all that is done and said.
We know their dream; enough
To know they dreamed and are dead;
And what if excess of love
Bewildered them till they died?
I write it out in a verse--
MacDonagh and MacBride
And Connolly and Pearse
Now and in time to be,
Wherever green is worn,
Are changed, changed utterly:
A terrible beauty is born.___

What went wrong with our Education System? #Education #OECD
The OECD report shows that about one in five university graduates can manage basic literacy and numeracy tasks. The report says this means they can do little more than "read the instructions on a bottle of aspirin, or understand a petrol gauge".
The analysis of 23 countries also found that only students in England and the United States of America had worse numeracy skills than students from Ireland/Northern Ireland.
I am not a fan of standardised tests in general nor of OECD reports in particular but this is a very damming and depressing report. What has gone so wrong with our Education System?

UPDATED 2 Feb 2016: The OECD have just issued an apology to Northern Ireland students for errors in the graphs on their own report. The OECD mistake affected rankings on the skills of university students published on pages 15 and 53 of the report. Hmmm numeracy skills…. http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-northern-ireland-35474512

Broadband speed, so much for progress    #Broadband  #Vodafone
I’ve had more issues with Broadband speed in the last three months than in the previous 15 years. I have so called high speed fibre broadband with a download speed up to 70MB. I had little or no connection over the Christmas Holiday season, Friday evenings and the weekend are now a no go. People have explained to me that it’s all about Netflix and movie streaming and I need to pay more money to get an ‘uncongested’ channel. I am paying over 50 euro monthly for my package. I work from home and I don’t watch movies, I need a reliable connection. So much for technology progress,, less power to you……

But in the case of David Bowie, I don’t think I’ve ever heard anybody argue or disagree. We are unanimous in our grief today. A genius has left us, a genius who is still singing for us from above, a genius who has reinvented himself yet again.

So a phone isn’t a phone anymore?  #Smartphones #Communications
For the last few weeks I’ve noticed people saying they can’t hear me, my voice is muffled, can I call back on the land line. The phone signal is perfect. But I gather it’s quite normal now that nobody can hear or use the latest Smartphones for phone calls? They work super well for surfing the Internet, ordering the shopping, playing games and music, uploading photos and whatever you’re having yourself but no, forget trying to make a phone call!

When did blotting paper disappear??? #BlastFromThePast #WarOnWords #ThrowbackThursday
I’m writing Christmas cards and the ink is running everywhere. I’d forgotten about blotting paper, when did it disappear? Kitchen towel is doing the trick but it just isn’t the same :-D
I’m feeling old –a search for ‘blotting paper’ just throws up hundreds of images of cosmetic blotting pads, not a sign of an ink pen and paper….

The G+ Campus and bar  #Google #SocialMedia
Now that G+ is reinventing itself (yet again….) there’s a lot of renewed talk about what the network is about, how it started and the change of direction. G+ has always been like a massive global college, an international campus full of experts, non-experts and students from every faculty you can imagine. They’ve all mingled together and Liberal Arts/Science/Education/Media/Philosophy/Psychology have all bumped into each other for a chat as they go about their business.
In its original design, G+ relied on Circles where we selected and sorted people into general groups. The designs then became more refined and we further divided people into Communities and then Collections, both based on shared themes/ interests.

To be honest, I think the new interfaces and design changes are irrelevant, the original G+ campus is still there, it’s just a bit harder to find your way around. The various faculties now have separate buildings instead of the original open plan design. And like every college campus, the place to meet people and have a chat is not in the Lectures/Collections nor in the Faculty buildings/Communities, but in the canteen or in the bar where all the best conversations take place!

Explore and Search are very different #Google #Search
And Google, the master of the Search engine should know this already! With the new G+ Interface a search for a particular person/their recent posts/ or even a search for a particular current topic of interest, now redirects to a new EXPLORE landing page. Now it’s fine and dandy if this new landing page had some if any sort of relevance. or maybe an algorithm or two at work, but no, it’s just a totally irrelevant hotchpotch of What’s Hot, the Suggested User List, Featured Collections/Communities all rolled into one page that can often take quite a while to load.. (“Simpler Faster and Better” it is definitely not) Hmmm, San Francisco Giants…
C’mon G+, bring back Search, you know how to Search!

Sadly the real world is still a very nasty place and seems to have no respect for either the living or the dead. In short:
Bank –I called in person along with my own passport and a copy of Nuala’s death certificate to our local bank requesting to see last year’s company bank statements in order to settle her business account. They have no policy and refused me access, despite the fact that I am a company director.
Post Office –a simple request to re-direct mail was refused until we can provide the probate of her will, this often takes 2 years.
Airtricity –a final warning to cut off electricity supply
UPC –an acknowledgement the client was dead but could we please return the set box immediately or we would continue to pay bills
Vodafone home phone –we cancelled her account and got a very nasty letter threatening legal action and a mention in Stubbs Gazette as there was a bill unpaid after her death.
Three Mobile –a letter to ‘the estate of Nuala O’Duffy’ and further monthly mobile bills for a mobile phone she very definitely hasn’t used since her death….___

Well I’m glad to see I’m not the only one who gets confused with Google names! I love this snippet:  “That is, until Google revamped Google Talk (which was sometimes also branded as “Chat”, for some reason). This big overhaul, which was part of Google’s plan to unify your messages, saw Google abandon the Talk and Chat monikers and instead call its messaging app Hangouts.”

Bye bye Google business pages?  #GoogleMyBusiness #GoogleLocal
Google business pages have a new update today which includes an option to use G+ on the home page and a second option to view Insights. There is a new top left menu (not very easy to find) and underneath you can select to view your business page. Yes, three clicks to get anywhere at all and it’s very messy and not at all intuitive Looks to me like the new Google My Business (yes, note the name change!) is about to migrate away from G+ as a separate app.
From day one Google made it hard for businesses: the verification process was an enigma and most businesses lost interest and fell at the first hurdle. Business pages could not add people to follow for about two years before the policy was changed. And business page posts rarely show in the main stream so why bother? The Majority Illusion    #SocialMedia #Polls #MarketResearch
A fascinating insight into how quickly public opinion sometimes flip flops and the catalysing effect of Social Media.
“The majority think they’re in the minority. Or, ‘the few shaping the opinions of the many,’ as network researcher Kristina Lerman described it. She calls this the ‘majority illusion’. It’s our flawed perception of some networks that relies a logical proverb: We just don’t know what we don’t know.
The @justinbieber’s of the world skew the results for the rest of us. “

In a study of education systems in more than 30 countries, the OECD has found students who use computers very frequently at school do "a lot worse" academically than students who use them moderately.

Wherever I lay my mat #beaches #nature #GreekIslands
I notice the term ‘organised beach’ has become increasingly popular. It seems to mean a beach where there are rows and rows of sun loungers and umbrellas absolutely wrecking the beautiful vista. Cheap cafes and blaring music are usually thrown in for good measure!
For many years, most of the beaches on the Greek Islands were unorganised and unspoilt .Most beaches were surrounded by 'koukounari' (pine) trees providing natural shelter from the sun. And that’s the way beaches should remain.

Why are Google product updates getting worse and worse  #Google
I’ve always loved Google and more or less moved my life to Google many years ago. I’m so disappointed that Google keep messing up perfectly good products that used to work really well. What’s going on? Changes are fine if they are for good, but many of these changes are just messing for the sake of messing. Is there any option to revert back to older Google versions that worked really well?

No, they are not all updates, some of these emails are really important information from my bank, some are important job contacts. Please let me sort my own gmail, I do a better job.
Contacts: I tried to make a new group yesterday. I was looking to add people I already emailed to a new information group. It took me ages as most of the suggestions were from G+ (No, I follow these people, I am not in contact with them). Eventually I got an option to revert to the old contacts and this worked just fine, these are my contacts i.e. people I contact
Google Maps: I used to love it. What has happened? I’m now getting over a quarter the screen blocked with my search query. I try and use street view and instead  I get a selection of photos I don’t want. The detailed route directions are also often inaccurate now.
Google Photos: I absolutely loved the photos on G+ with great editing and AutoEnhance settings, all easy to use and intuitive. Now it’s a complicated mess with categories that make no sense to me at all.
Google Search My default homepage since the 1990’s and what Google was all about. Now I get unverified and inaccurate Wikipedia results, something called the Knowledge Graph that is anything but, lots of empty vessels making a lot of noise and nothing resembling the search results I am looking for.

Google, can we go back in time to when you got things right?

Correct me if I’m wrong but has the Facebook Like ever been broken? G+ is just over 4 years old now and for the umpteenth time the +1 is broken. Yeah, it probably shouldn’t make a difference and I should ignore it, does it really matter if the +1 is working and people show their approval or not? But it seems like this is a basic feature that should work?

Yeah, it probably shouldn’t make a difference and I should ignore it, does it really matter if the +1 is working and people show their approval or not? But it seems like this is a basic feature that should work?

Can I just choose to Hangout with people I Know? #Hangouts #Settings #Google
G+ is 4 years old now and I’ve been here since day two and shouldn’t be lost. . Hangouts are now independent of G+ and still a very confusing mess. Maybe I’m missing something basic in all the G+ help manuals out there but where can I adjust my Hangout settings? I am getting invites from total strangers that are not in my circles and invites that make noise in the middle of the night… . I don’t seem to have any control over this at all. Is there a settings options somewhere where I can choose Family/Friends/My Circles and ignore everybody else?

It’s all Greek to me #Economy #GrExit
I’m no Economist but this looks like a well balanced article on the current crisis with Greece and the EU. The human urge to seek simple solutions is strong. Alas, many of the world's problems do not have simple solutions. The problems of Greece and the curozone not only do not have simple solutions; they have no good solution.
For one group of commentators, the European and IMF side is wicked and uncaring, wanting sadistically to keep Greece in a permanent austerity trap.
For another group of commentators, taking a diametrically opposing view, the governments which ran Greece until early this year were weak and unreliable, frequently backsliding on the promises they made. I’m just dropping in to say hello  #Communities  #AntiSocialMedia
Remember when Communities were about community and communicating? talking? Having a chat? When we first started the Ireland community here on G+, we had less than 100 members and it was a hum of activity. It was a bit like the local pub: drop in every evening and say hello and see who’s at the bar. We’ve over 4,000 members now and it seems to be just a place to dump the latest promotion or the latest photo and ‘do re share’.  I don’t think this is Google’s fault at all, it’s probably just human nature and it’s a bit sad.

Seaweed is the oldest form of life on the planet. All life began in the mineral rich waters of the oceans. Seaweed is especially beneficial for dry skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, acne, uneven skin tone and blotchy skin.
Seaweed moisturises hair, increases hair lustre and softness and decreases’ electrostatic charge.
Improves Body Metabolism and relieves pain
Iodine which is prevalent in seaweed, is essential for the thyroid gland to regulate the body’s metabolism. An under-active thyroid can lead to weight gain, fatigue, cold sensitivity, loss of hair and slow pulse.
Seaweed contains anti-inflammatory compounds and helps relieve arthritis, rheumatism, muscular and back pain.
Detoxes body and lifts mood
Seaweed has high levels of antioxidants such as algal polyphenols and carotenoids. These detoxify and eliminate excess fluid in body tissues. Seaweed bathing also stimulates lymph drainage and promotes weight loss. Other benefits to the body's lymph system include boosting immunity, raising energy levels and promoting stress relief and restoring equilibrium.

Dun Laoghaire Baths have got the go ahead at last #Seaweed #Baths #DunLaoghaire
I’m so happy to see the new development plans for the baths but a bit disappointed there won’t be any baths as such as they are too expensive. https://dlrcoco.citizenspace.com/architects/d-n-laoghaire-baths   I’ve put in my own submission suggesting indoor seaweed baths in the first phase.  These could be accommodated within the Pavilion building and would not involve any significant structural changes or alterations to the proposed plans.  Dún Laoghaire was famous for its natural seawater baths and it would be nice to return to the past and to the historic roots of Dún Laoghaire as the place for natural luxurious bathing.

Bring luxurious bathing back to Dun Laoghaire
I’ve been fascinated by heated seawater for some time now. Our seawater in Ireland is usually too cold for most of us. Now there are plans for a heated seawater pool in Dun Laoghaire where I live. I’m not sure the location on the pier is ideal but I’d really love to see this happen.  http://www.thejournal.ie/dun-laoghaire-urban-beach-1055831-Aug2013/
Dun Laoghaire (formerly known as Kingstown) was famous for its natural seawater baths. In 1843 the Royal Victorian Baths were built beside Scotman’s Bay. They were extremely popular and Dun Laoghaire became one of the best places in Ireland to bathe. There was a range of bathing options including sea and fresh water, hot and cold baths, medical baths with sulphur, seaweed and hot seawater.
Let’s bring luxurious bathing back to Dun Laoghaire!

Walk an hour a day and you’ll be grand!  #exercise #fitness #health
Recent research has claimed the optimum exercise is to walk for just 450 minutes per week, or a little more than an hour per day. “Those people were 39 percent less likely to die prematurely than people who never exercised. Those few individuals engaging in 10 times or more the recommended exercise dose gained about the same reduction in mortality risk as people who simply met the guidelines”   http://well.blogs.nytimes.com//2015/04/15/the-right-dose-of-exercise-for-a-longer-life/   (h/t +Nico Nightowl )
This got me thinking about my own daily habits and I downloaded Walkroid, a very simple app to measure daily steps and walking.. I’m pleasantly surprised to see I average about 6-7km daily just doing my normal stuff, that sounds good to me and I’ll give the gym a miss!

Why the Myers-Briggs test is totally meaningless   #Psychology #Personality
This isn't a test designed to accurately categorize people, but a test designed to make them feel happy after taking it. This is one of the reasons why it's persisted for so many years in the corporate world after being disregarded by psychologists.
• The Myers-Briggs uses false, limited binaries. “There is no such thing as a pure extravert or introvert”, Jung wrote.
• The Myers-Briggs provides inconsistent, inaccurate results Research has found that as much as 50 percent of people arrive at a different result the second time they take a test, even if it's just five weeks later.

Hmmm, my +Ireland page views have dramatically dropped from an average of 7,000 daily to 70 this week….
Is this a general 99% drop in usage or maybe nobody likes Ireland anymore!

I want to see life in colour! #AutoAwesome #BlackAndWhite  #Google
Anyone else notice Google have been AutoAwesoming (new verb???) photos in black and white for the last few weeks? What’s going on? HDR overload? A new trend? Now I love professional black and white shots and they are classy and arty but my amateur holiday photos look very bleak indeed when they have the colour taken out of them!
Here’s a photo of the colourful boats at the harbour in Gozo, I think they look very forlorn and dreary when Google has stripped them of their colour…..

Maybe I’m unusual and maybe I’m just fortunate but I’ve worked remotely for 14 years now and when I go to ’the office’; I go to talk to people and I go for meetings, when I’ve real work to do I work from home.

Mandatory calories on menus and Maths lessons for chefs? #GreatIrishFood   #Calories
Leaving aside the idea of a Nanny state deciding what we can and cannot eat and the issues of diet and obesity, the practical implementations of this new law are ridiculous. Seems to me there is a hell of a lot of Maths involved before the dinner even gets to reach the oven!
The proposed new Irish law will require all menus, including boards, leaflets, digital menus or other forms, to display the amount of calories alongside the price in the same font size and colour. Now this will be easy enough to enforce for fast food chains with the same daily menu and meal deals ready to go, but Ireland is renowned for its individual restaurants where the menu changes daily depending on the local products available and the fresh fish catch of the day. So is it useful? Yes, on a very limited basis, it’s been really nice to see my flight bookings and local weather forecasts and a few news stories. Sadly no, it was still like the small child with very limited information. And my luggage was lost, no Google didn’t hear about that at all.
And on a daily basis? I work remotely from home and Google is killed trying to find a place for me to travel to for work. A family member had recently been in hospital so I keep getting suggestions every day that this hospital is my place of work. It would take a reasonably intelligent human being about 5 minutes to figure out that the hospital was for visits to sick people but the machine and the algorithms are still struggling to make sense of it all.
I’ll play around with it for another while but I’m not dealing with a small child that I would love and care for and be patient with. I’m dealing with a machine and I’m going to throw it away very soon for being stupid! ___
