I've always wanted to photograph the Bow Fiddle Rock as it's such a cool location so I went there as early as I could to make use of that great morning light. I was really glad that I got there early as the red sky was beautiful and it lasted for a good while too!

4-Day Glen Coe Workshop

Join me to one of Scotland's most iconic locations: Glen Coe. Known for its splendid views in all directions Glen Coe has inspired artists for years and that includes myself. We will be travelling not only around Glen Coe but also Glen Etive, Rannoch Moor and also the few lochs that reside in this area. I've setup two dates; one in November this year and also one in February 2017.

Dates, Prices and more info can be found below.

Aurora Borealis At Portencross

After updating Lightroom I thought I'd have a look and see if there were any Aurora shots that I hadn't edited yet and found this one! This was taken as a test shot while setting up a timelapse which still needs editing. Hopefully we get some more nights like this when the weather clears up.

Bow Fiddle Rock - Scotland

I've been looking through my images from Bow Fiddle Rock and found this one that I hadn't edited yet. This was taken when I first got down to the beach just before the sun rose to my right. Definitely need to get back there sometime soon :)

I've only been out taking photos twice this year, twice! It's nearly February! This weather is so frustrating at the moment, all I want is a little bit of sun shine and blue skies. Am I asking for too much?

Anyway here's another night shot taken from the other week when the weather wasn't too bad.

New year, new profile picture! :P

I had a great day time-lapsing some new waterfalls I found the other day and while time-lapsing the main time-lapse I thought I'd sneak into the final frames. 2016 so far is looking really good and I think it's going to be my best year yet! :)

The Three Sisters At Night

After spending the day around Glen Coe & Glen Etive I went into Glencoe village for a bite to eat and a lovely pint to await the arrival of darkness. The moon was at a phase where the light wasn't too strong and you could still see a large amount of stars. I stayed quite late as I was also getting a time-lapse of the stars and moon as they moved across the sky.

Looking Down The Glen Etive Valley

I've spent the last day going through all the timelapse footage I got from Glen Coe the other day, I didn't get that many still images as I was there to primarily do timelapses of the amazing landscape. This is my first edit of the year and I feel I'm off to a good start! :)

For todays image we go to Reykjavik, specifically the Solfar viking sculpture. I had never edited this image when I first went through these images 2 years ago so it was nice to edit this shot and see how my style has or has not changed over the years.

Seeing the Aurora Borealis happen in front of your eyes is always an amazing sight to see but what made it even better for me was not just the images but being able to share this amazing sight with my fiancée Rachael :D

Going to Portencross to photograph the Northern lights was a great decision as the castle just looks stunning here! Hopefully there'll be more nights like this to come. :)

So here's my attempt at throwing my hat into the ring! Last nights Aurora Borealis was incredible, the best I've ever seen! I spent yesterday planning where I was going to go, what shots I wanted and was constantly checking different aurora alert sites as I love preparing my shots beforehand.

This was actually the third image I took after turning up at Portencross in Ayrshire, I chose this location due to the amount of light pollution here and also the great foreground elements for my images.

How did everyone else fair?

There's a lot more images to come and maybe a time-lapse, stay tuned...

Mealt Falls - Isle of Skye

This location was so tricky to get a long exposure and a good angle of the waterfall due to the amount of people that gather around the railings here. I just had to wait it out until there was a gap for me and my tripod! ;)

This is a frame from the time-lapse footage I shot the other night of the milky way down at Portencross castle. About an hour into the shot the moon made an appearance which the dynamic of the shot but it actually worked in my favour rather than against it.

Quick edit from last nights time-lapse session down at Portencross. The stars were pretty visible for the first couple of hours but with the moon rising in the east and incoming clouds I was only able to get one time-lapse shot but I'm really happy with what I got.

This shot was taken after I had finished the time-lapse and was getting ready to go back to my car. I really like that you can see the stars reflected in the pool of water. :)

The River Sligachan - Isle of Skye

While walking around trying to find different angles of the river with the mountains in the background, after about 30 minutes of walking I really liked this composition where the water was directly in front of the Cuillin mountains. I used my 10 stop filter to add some silkiness to the water and change the dynamic of the clouds.

Lindisfarne Castle - Holy Island

I've just finally finished editing all the shots I took in Northumberland the other week. Here's one of Lindisfarne Castle taken while walking up to the castle, it was a sunny day with lots of clouds so a great opportunity to use my 10 stop filter to get a bit of motion in the clouds. I'd love to go again but stay throughout the night to get some night sky images with the castle.

I've been pretty busy lately, writing articles, meetings, planning talks etc but it's always nice to visit local spots in-between. I've been to Dalcairnie Falls many times but it's always good to find new shots that you hadn't seen before.

Further down from the main falls I found this smaller waterfall that proved to be quite difficult to get to as the area was overgrown and very slippy due to the rainfall from the night before. After an awkward 10 minutes of slipping and sliding down through the mud I made it down to the bottom so I could get a nice low-angle shot of the water.

Loch Coruisk - Isle of Skye

If you ever go to the south of Skye I would recommend taking the boat trip from Elgol to Loch Coruisk which sits on the south side of the Cuillin Hills. The walking around the area is amazing with spectacular views of the surrounding mountains, I think next time I go would love to spend the whole day there or camp.

Dunstanburgh Castle - Northumberland

Just got back from a couple days away in Northumberland with my family, it was great to visit some locations that I've always wanted to take a camera to like Dunstanburgh castle and Lindisfarne as they've always been on my list. Out of all the shots of the castle I took that afternoon this was my favourite as I really like how I captured the motion in the water as it crashed against the rocks.

There's still more that I want to add to it including my images from the Isle of Skye which I'm hoping to have finished editing in the next couple of days so make sure to keep checking it over the next couple of months.

For now here's an image taken on the River Sligachan when the clouds were coming in.

For now here's an image taken on the River Sligachan when the clouds were coming in.

Neist Point Lighthouse - Isle of Skye

One place that I really wanted to visit during our trip was the famous lighthouse you see on all the postcards down on Neist Point which is on the most westerly tip of Skye. The weather was typically Skye during this day, glorious sun-shine one minute, pissing down the next!

After Rach and I walked around the lighthouse and cliff edges we started to head back towards the car but I couldn't leave without walking along the top cliff edge to get a shot of looking down at the lighthouse. It was extremely windy up there, so much so that I couldn't use my 10 stop filter without getting a blurry image no matter how hard I hung onto my tripod!

Interested in buying a print? Then please feel free to contact me for my prices :)

I'm still working my way through my images from Skye and also writing a new article for Wex Photographic at the same time so I thought I'd post a new image from the other day taken at Troon, Ayrshire.

I love going back to this location and trying new things, different compositions, different weather just to see if I can make something new that's more interesting. This is definitely my favourite shot so far from this location so far.

Towards The Cuillin Hills - Isle Of Skye

There's something very magical about Skye and after my first visit there last week I can see myself visiting this beautiful Isle time and time again in the near future. I've already started the slow process of organising, processing and editing the 1500 images I took during our time exploring. I can already see quite a few images that I'm really proud of! :)

This image was taken down at the shoreline of the small village of Elgol which lies south of the Isle with a gorgeous view looking towards the Cuillin Hills. I love how moody the shot is, it was pretty sunny for most of the day but in the afternoon there was some heavy storm clouds heading south that really changed the atmosphere of the landscape.

I'm currently updating my website so you can prints of my work but if you're interested in buying a print of... more »

I've just booked another talk for this season bringing me to a grand total of 11 talks around Scotland, I think I'm going to need a tour bus! If you are part of a photographic club and would be interested in me giving a talk on landscape or time-lapse photography then please feel free to contact me via my website:

Visiting Loch Coruisk in the southern area of the Cuillin mountain range was quite a treat as the loch is only accessible from either a long walk through the hills or a boat trip from the small fishing village of Elgol.

Working hard in the Isle of Skye at the moment, I thought it would be cool to show this behind the scenes image of me heading towards the Quiraing in the north-east of the isle. It was a lot more windy than it looks, I was holding on to my tripod for dear life!

We had a great time walking around Neist Point Lighthouse. It was so windy that I thought my beard was going to fly off! ;)

I do miss the snow at the moment as I'm not one for the heat. I would take -10 any day rather than summer heat! This shot was taken on the Rannoch Moor back in January, I'll actually be driving through here on Saturday so it'll great to see how much it's changed since then.

On Saturday we'll be going to the Isle of Skye for a week, I cannot wait! I just hope the weather is on our side. :)

Element

We all have our elements, places in which we thrive and feel at home with our craft. For me, it's the Scottish Highlands. A place filled with majestic beauty and stunning landscapes, a place I can go to time and time again and never get bored of it. This is me in my element...

Where's your element?

Todays glorious sunshine makes me miss the cold as if you know me, you know that I'm not too keen on heatwaves as I prefer to be freezing cold rather than roasting hot! This shot was taken on the banks of loch Lomond in January when the clouds were coming in low over the hills. I really like the negative space in the image and emptiness that it creates.

Checked out my new website yet?: www.kirknorbury.co.uk

Here's a behind-the-scenes shot from a recent workshop I did down at Turnberry Lighthouse, we were greeted with a beautiful sunset to finish a great day. I'm still taking bookings for 2015/2016 so please have a look on my website for more details.
