Jeff Smith61,925Welcome to The Selfie Sunday Project for April 5, 2015 We are back! First thing you may notice is "Selfy" has become "Selfie", just a change to keep up with the more recognized spelling of selfie. A general theme for this week is *New Beginnings* , it's Spring and Selfie Sunday has returned so it seems to fit. If you can't stick to the theme no worries either, since we are freshly back and running any selfie you take is fine.  Please read this post for the guidelines and FAQ for Selfie Sunday. http://goo.gl/SKnkZ8 Your photo can be taken from Mar. 30/15 before the event up until 8:00 AM EDT Monday Apr. 6/15. Older photos posted will be removed from the event. Please only post one photo to the event and that photo should ideally be taken the weekend or the week prior to the event. Again, please no dipping into the archives. As always have some fun. Everyone is looking forward to some great selfies. Any questions, We have many moderators in the Art of Self Portraiture Community who can help you along the way. _ UPLOADING The event will be open for uploading photos at 9:00 PM on the Saturday before. Click the Add Photos button in the event to upload your images. This is a Public event open to all. Any questions, again please check the FAQs. http://goo.gl/SKnkZ8 Cheers, JeffThe Selfie Sunday Project2015-04-05 03:00:0061

Olav Folland40,259So, my employer owns a cabin in the Truckee area, and believe it or not in the twelve-ish years I've never actually used it.  What better way to kick it off with a photowalk in the mountains?   I can't promise snow, but it's the shoulder season so either way it shouldn't be very crowded.  It also doesn't look like the Kings fire will affect the area so there should be plenty of scenery along the way. We can accommodate 15 people, maybe 20 if folks are willing to bring their sleeping bags.   Lodging in the cabin is *free*, and there are also hotels in the area for those that would rather have more creature comforts.   Either way, it should be an awesome time.  I'm not super familiar with the Donner/Truckee area to be honest, but we're researching and also hoping to crowdsource some venues as well. I'm generally inviting my "North Bay Photowalks" circle, but feel free to invite anyone else as well.  Cabin space is first come, first served however. edit:  This is timed to coincide with the full moon (which is on Thursday) so not so good for star trails, but fun for night-time landscapesLet's go to the Mountains!2014-11-07 12:00:005
Eustacia Tan1,226The discussion this time was pretty short, so I'm skipping the voting part and moving straight into announcing the theme/asking for submissions. And the theme for the next issue is.... *drumroll* _*CHARACTERS*_ _What we're looking for_ - Blogposts/book reviews/pictures/memes/really anything goes on the theme (characters) - Book reviews (on books by first-time authors/small publishers/self-published authors or on writing) - Announcements about your new book/your friend's new book/giveaways - Cover photo (about characters).  _How to submit_ - Email me (if you don't have my email, shoot me a message) - Use a private share.  _Deadline_ 23 April 2014 (If you're going to be a day or two late, let me know in advance so that I can make space for your post) _Additional information_ If this is your first time contributing, please send a short introduction of yourself (with links to your website/google+ page/etc if you want).  Thank you!  To further the conversation about mental health illness, here is an article I wrote many years ago which compares "normal" to "not-normal".

Reasonable and Proportionate

The phrase "reasonable and proportionate" has been on my mind a lot lately. Both in terms of mood and reaction. I think it is very important for me as a bipolar person. In a nutshell this is because everyone can be moody, everyone is exuberantly happy sometimes, everyone is blue sometimes; but when you are bipolar these states may have no relation to external events or may be drastically out of proportion to them.

If a normal person is moody, that usually means they tend towards gloom, or perhaps hold on to a mood longer than what is considered average. When a bipolar is moody this can mean something else entirely. I can go from bouncing off the walls to incapacitating... more »

I can go from bouncing off the walls to incapacitating sadness several times a day.

It is almost preposterous to compare euphoric mania to a good mood. Though I've never tried cocaine, I've had its effects described to me and I think that high might well be compared to mania. I will make a humble attempt to describe it from my own experience. When I am manic, I am practically a goddess. I am tremendously wise; I can pass out advice and judgement and it is all obvious to me and unquestionably correct. I am also irresistably attractive: cute, sexy, gorgeous. And of course, I must dress accordingly. And oh boy am I funny! I'm witty, clever. I can't shut up, but I'm so entertaining that who could mind? I have enough energy for two normal people, and while I get sleepy, actually getting sleep isn't all that important. I have plans galore! I will write a book! I will find a bluegrass band that needs a singer. I will shame Martha Stewart with my homemaking prowess! And that part of me that keeps my natural impulse towards
mischief in check is on a lunch break. It's a great deal of fun while it's happening, but can be embarrassing in hindsight.

Mania has another face. Its nearest equivalent for normal people is irritability. It certainly includes being irritable, but alas there is more. Too much energy for comfort and not enough focus to use the energy effectively. There is sensory overload - maybe I sense more of things, or maybe that part of my brain that knows how to sort, process and prioritize the information has gone on vacation like my self-restraint does in the happy mania. I have absolutely no patience. Oh, it's maddening. I just feel like I'm going to jump out of my skin, and I even want to do that because it seems like it would be a relief. My very soul itches in that state.

Everyone gets "the blues" sometimes, even bipolar people. And even depression is so common that it is mistakenly diagnosed as the problem for many people who are bipolar, and it is sometimes years before the mistake is caught. I think depression is better understood than mania, so I won't described it in detail here. Please, my readers, if you feel like you DON'T understand depression, I'll change this paragraph and describe it a little. For now let it suffice to say that "the blues" doesn't make people think "I want to die" all day long every day.

Above I have been defining terms, so that I can discuss what is reasonable and proportionate and what is not.

It is reasonable and proportionate to find yourself temporarily incapacitated with sadness at the death of a friend. Not so much if the friend didn't call you back promptly. If you decide to go out on the town to celebrate getting a great promotion and maybe go a bit nutty with the drinking, that is reasonable and proportionate. Not so much if you decide to go out on the town to celebrate it being Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, etc ... especially if "out" includes out of the state (of course, this could also mean you're an alcoholic) (note, I'm making these examples up for the most part).

This concept is a reality check for me. If my moods are fluctuating, I ask myself, if they are or are not fluctuating in proportion to the events taking place in my life. Today, as I write this, they are not. However, the moods are not intense so the situation is not something I am worried about. I have also taken to using this as a yardstick for the behavior of others when they ask "is this normal?" I am hoping to teach myself this check mechanism so well that it becomes automatic - that if I find myself behaving in an unreasonable and disproportionate manner I can at least try to reign in and seek help... and in other situations I can reassure myself that what I am feeling is "normal."

This post makes some really good points about mental illness disclosure and respecting other people's limitations. Please feel free to join the conversation on the OP, and to share.

A friend of mine posted this earlier, and it's given me a fair amount of thought (in disclosure, some of this is copypasta from a private group since I took the time to type it all out).

I'm bipolar with some other stuff thrown in for fun.  There, I said it.

My particular manifestation is that I can't really deal with crowds, a lot of noise (that's all trying to grab my attention), or pretty much any other overstimulating environment.  I just can't process it all.  Random things will make me seem high, but in different circumstances can send me so low that people worry.  Sometimes, I can go between states so quickly that the best I can explain is that part of my brain is just screaming at me, and I can't get away from it.

And, it's rough.  I mean, I work full-time and somehow managed to keep my jorb as I descended into madness.  I skirted the issue as much as I could maybe some from the stigma, but largely because I didn't know what was wrong, and I wanted to try and keep things together until I had some answers, and a treatment that was working (sorta).  I did end up telling my boss at some point, mostly because I'd hit a plateau that wasn't quite enough.  No details of diagnosis, just that I was being treatment by a shrink.

Anyhoo, I'll talk about it publicly in the right settings (or when there's something relevant, like this), but in general I guess I figure it's no one's business what's going on in my head unless I want to tell them.  My HR manager currently just knows "I have a problem with crowds".  Some of my IRL friends know a little more, and some know most the nature of my illness, if not the backstory.

It's not that I really want to hide it, but I don't want the label.  Sure, that's part of me, but it's not who I am.  If it makes sense, I rarely talk about my day jorb for the same reason.

I want people to understand that I have limitations, just like they have limitations, and we should respect each other's limitations.  Labels only really matter in certain circumstances, you know?

I guess what's important is symptoms - that's what people need to know, and that's what they can comprehend.  Me being bipolar isn't really relevant, since it's the symptoms that affect me and those around me.  Like my HR person the other day - if I'd told her that I'm bipolar and have social anxiety (among other socialization issues) her eyes would have glossed over.  Me saying "I have a problem with crowds, and I think that would be a bad thing for me" is something she could grasp.

My bipolar isn't my wife's bipolar isn't your bipolar, etc..  My wife and I share the same meds (which I recommend, it's really handy if you can get different dosages) but our schedule is completely different.  I take seroquel around the clock to stay functional, and she usually just needs it at bedtime.  But at the same time, I can do that and work, where she just can't work for that and other reasons.

Labels just lead to assumptions, and that's a bad thing, regardless of how destigmatized the illness is.  It's not entirely unlike a woman saying she has cancer and you assume it's breast cancer.  And beyond that, cancer affects everyone differently, both mentally and physically.  How it affects their loved ones is important too, and in a similar way that dealing with cray cray does (but that's a different discussion).

The point being, a number of us have the same illness and the manifestations differ greatly.

Would you want to say "I'm bipolar" and they automatically assume you're just like me, or like their friend, or like the homeless guy they served at the soup kitchen?  Because that's exactly what people are going to do - they're going to take your label and put you in a little box based on their experience, and that's just human nature.   Bipolar is a wide spectrum disorder, and there are no really firm symptoms other than violent mood swings.  And as I mentioned, I can go through the spectrum so fast it seems like all at once - and not always for any noticeable trigger.  Or I can go manic and crash.  Or I can be totally depressed and be irrationally "up". Some people do this, some people don't.   I can say my "ups" have included things like buying plane tickets, and my downs include staring at G+ but not able to form words.

The symptoms are what really matter, and people need to be understanding of those.  If someone says, "I can't do this because of 'x'", it doesn't mean they shouldn't invite them to the next thing, because it may be a different circumstance.  People particularly need to not push things when - anyone - says they "can't", no matter the reason. The person they're badgering may not have any sort of diagnosis whatsoever, but if they're uncomfortable with the idea, then "no" needs to mean "no" in the mental health spectrum the same way it's supposed to be applied to sex.  And they need to be allowed the same in return.

Labels are good for doctors, and things like when someone is so incapacitated they can't work/function, even with meds (i.e., disability).  Otherwise, they just don't fucking matter.  You respect my limits, I respect your limits, and we'll all get along okay.  I mean, everyone is a little crazy when it comes down to it, it's just a matter of degree.

Soooo, first G+ refused to post a pic I wanted to share and instead posted a pic I posted yesterday. Nothing I could do changed that. So I gave up and tried another pic, which it posted in thumbnail size despite the actual dimensions. So I thought I'd try it from my laptop... But g+ won't show me any photos older than yesterday.

Just pretend I'm posting pretty pictures, okay?

You know what I love about high school teachers?

Last night I went to see my daughter's band (and all the rest of the music dept) and they did a stellar job at Stars and Stripes Forever. Afterward I went up to the piccolo player (who'd had a solo) and said something like "That was some bad ass piccolo playing!" And then realized I was talking to a child and that the band teacher was right there. Teacher's response? "I know, right?"

The theme for this week's Selfy Sunday ("All about the money") reminded me of this pic I took several years ago (and therefore can't submit).

On a total whim, I opened the piano bench which has three pieces of music for beginners. I haven't played piano in something like 30 years, so I decided I'd see if I could read the music. Picked O Christmas Tree. Took me about ten minutes to play it all the way through without mistakes. O.O

More TPIs today, cuz my shoulder developed a major issue in whatever it was I was doing last night (cuz it sure didn't feel like sleep). Other than that, I'm quite well.

In 2013, 4 years after I went through chemo, I was formally diagnosed with chronic neutropenia. Last blood work I nailed every test except I apparently had too much hemoglobin. My body is so contrary!

The main supporting characters in my WIP are brother and sister (both young adults). I'm really having fun with that dynamic. :)

The planets aligned and I got back to Unbreaking, getting a couple thousand words down. I'm guessing there's another 50K left in the story. I hope it doesn't take me a month to write it, though, I want to see how it all works out! :P

Well here's serendipity... I've got my creative ducks in a row to get back to writing Unbreaking and I got my chair back today, too! It's a sign. =) For reals I probably will wait until Saturday to start, because tomorrow's already going to be a long day. But I'm psyched!
