Jeff Smith61,984Welcome to The Selfie Sunday Project for April 5, 2015 We are back! First thing you may notice is "Selfy" has become "Selfie", just a change to keep up with the more recognized spelling of selfie. A general theme for this week is *New Beginnings* , it's Spring and Selfie Sunday has returned so it seems to fit. If you can't stick to the theme no worries either, since we are freshly back and running any selfie you take is fine.  Please read this post for the guidelines and FAQ for Selfie Sunday. http://goo.gl/SKnkZ8 Your photo can be taken from Mar. 30/15 before the event up until 8:00 AM EDT Monday Apr. 6/15. Older photos posted will be removed from the event. Please only post one photo to the event and that photo should ideally be taken the weekend or the week prior to the event. Again, please no dipping into the archives. As always have some fun. Everyone is looking forward to some great selfies. Any questions, We have many moderators in the Art of Self Portraiture Community who can help you along the way. _ UPLOADING The event will be open for uploading photos at 9:00 PM on the Saturday before. Olav Folland40,236So, my employer owns a cabin in the Truckee area, and believe it or not in the twelve-ish years I've never actually used it.  What better way to kick it off with a photowalk in the mountains?   I can't promise snow, but it's the shoulder season so either way it shouldn't be very crowded.  It also doesn't look like the Kings fire will affect the area so there should be plenty of scenery along the way. We can accommodate 15 people, maybe 20 if folks are willing to bring their sleeping bags.   Lodging in the cabin is *free*, and there are also hotels in the area for those that would rather have more creature comforts.   Either way, it should be an awesome time.  I'm not super familiar with the Donner/Truckee area to be honest, but we're researching and also hoping to crowdsource some venues as well. I'm generally inviting my "North Bay Photowalks" circle, but feel free to invite anyone else as well.  Cabin space is first come, first served however. edit:  This is timed to coincide with the full moon (which is on Thursday) so not so good for star trails, but fun for night-time landscapesLet's go to the Mountains!2014-11-07 12:00:005
Eustacia Tan1,232The discussion this time was pretty short, so I'm skipping the voting part and moving straight into announcing the theme/asking for submissions. And the theme for the next issue is.... *drumroll* _*CHARACTERS*_ _What we're looking for_ - Blogposts/book reviews/pictures/memes/really anything goes on the theme (characters) - Book reviews (on books by first-time authors/small publishers/self-published authors or on writing) - Announcements about your new book/your friend's new book/giveaways - Cover photo (about characters).  _How to submit_ - Email me (if you don't have my email, shoot me a message) - Use a private share.  _Deadline_ 23 April 2014 (If you're going to be a day or two late, let me know in advance so that I can make space for your post) _Additional information_ If this is your first time contributing, please send a short introduction of yourself (with links to your website/google+ page/etc if you want).  Thank you! Just randomly thinking about shadows, and I remembered this shot from way back in the old days before G+. I know I like the bike tire being in the photo, but I can't seem to verbalize why I think it works. If anyone agrees with me, do you want to give it a shot?

Ya shoulda listened!

When I saw the theme #IconicFamilyPhoto curated by +EJ I thought of this image, though I didn't shoot it. What makes this iconic is that my daughter and I are doing something really weird in the name of photography. That is definitely a theme in Folland Family homelife. :D

+kat Folland wants to be all non-sequitor posting Monty Python tonight.

So, I'll post what is probably the most random photo I've ever taken.

And no, this is not a photoshop/___Ya shoulda listened!

Love is Wonderful

Lyon, France has the friendliest graffiti I've ever seen. It really seemed as if the majority of "tags" were messages of happiness. Combined with the whimsical architecture, the city has a wonderful feeling.

Feral, my foot!

This "feral" feline loitered in the medieval church in Viviers. He eventually climbed into my daughter's lap.

Sorry about the slight motion blur, it was quite dim in the church.

All in a Day's Work

Every year Avignon hosts a film festival that goes on for weeks. The town is absolutely wallpapered in film posters, and various costumed groups and individuals pass out flyers. It was terribly colorful, but if life takes me back to Avignon I'd like to see it without all the clutter.

Watching

Viviers, France, is teeming with cats. They were represented to us (the tour group) as "feral" but I think it would be more accurate to say they were pets, just of the whole town rather than of any individual person or household. They were mostly quite friendly; one even flopped down in my daughter's lap. So... not my usual definition of feral.

"Guess my age!"

This breed of horses, native to Provence, are brown when they are babies, white as adults and gray when they are old. Thus, you can get a good idea of a horse's age just by the color of its coat.

I had misgivings about joining this group, because in my case, the dreams followed the catastrophic events in my life. I picked up both photography and writing in the wake of my diagnosis and treatment of cancer (respectively). Something about being given limits (bipolar, brain damage and lately fibromyalgia (which I have to admit kicks all other condition's asses when it comes to thwarting me)) inspired me to be more. Facing the possibility of my own death made me redefine my life.

tl;dr I don't quite fit here, but if I can inspire someone else, that's a good thing.

In France, they prefer not to kill bulls*, so instead of bull fights they have bull races, or, it seems to me, bull games. Ribbons are tied to their horns, and young men try to grab a ribbon and get away from the bull by jumping out of the arena. The bulls often jump the walls too, but as spry as they are, the humans usually get away.

We saw a demonstration of this today, and the horns were capped, but in a real event the caps would not be used, so sometimes humans do get hurt.

To me it seemed like the bulls were having a good time.

*They very occasionally do have Spanish style bull fighting, at least in Arles (twice a year, iirc)

Port de Lyon

I'm not sure why, but I found all the colorful containers really visually appealing.

Went through my first lock last night. It was really cool! Before that we went under a very low bridge. So low that even the wheelhouse was lowered. A bunch of crew were up on the top deck to make sure all the passengers remained seated. They themselves were standing, but they had to duck.
