White Rhino male in Lake Nakuru National Park, Kenya

I have just seen the last poaching Statistics from Rhino Buddies in Fb and I'm shocked!
324 poached Rhinos in South Africa 2013

"13 Rhino were poached in the Kruger National Park over the last week. These figures were made available by the DEA. 5 recently dehorned rhino were poached in the Machado area, 2 in Thabazimbi and 2 in the Vaalwater areas. 7 More rhino of which the locations are not known, have been reported poached by the DEA. This brings the total no of rhino poached in South Africa to 324."

Anyone besides me want to get the OLD version of G+ back. The initial notice on signing in to G+ told me how "streamlined" and great the new stream was. Personally feel it's a disaster - cluttered, confusing, messy, and anybody know why some posts cover the screen and others are "normal" width. Who the hell comes up with this crap - why do they keep fixing what isn't broken?

Probably red maples(acer rubrum) in brilliant fall color with fir trees along Moccasin Lake in the Upper Peninsula near Munising, Michigan. If you have never tried fall color there you will be amazed. I had this whole lake all to myself that morning - nothing like the New England leaf peeper crowds.

Fall colored aspens populus tremuloides and possibly birch trees below Middle Palisades Glacier Eastern Sierras, California. This is the southernmost glacier in North America (about 200 miles north of my home). It is also shrinking with the climate change (but there is no global warming right?? Just a guy with a match at the base of the glacier). Hope you like the image.

African lions (panthera leo) wildlife rescue animals at the Wildlife Waystation, a wildlife rescue facility I have been involved with since 1987.
The male African lion will often grasp the female behind the neck just before or during mating. It does not hurt the female but you can get a feel for what she thinks of his technique by looking at her.

Today is relive old post days - here's another image I posted several months back but thought some new people in my circles might find it interesting.
This is a western diamondback rattlesnake (crotalus atrox) striking a green jay (cyanocorax yncas).
IF YOU VIEW LARGE you can just see one of the diamondback fangs piercing the neck of the green jay. Taken from a photo blind at a small pond on a private ranch in the Rio Grande Valley in south Texas.
THIS IS A NATURAL PHOTO - NOT SET UP IN ANY WAY.
I was photographing two green jays that came in to drink at the pond. They separated and one flew to the opposite end of the pond and was struck by the rattler. I captured several images right after the initial strike. It was interesting to watch the snake's technique with a bird. Angel Falls in Canaima National Park, Venezuela - from the overlook - about a mile hike in from the Carro River. We got to the pullout on the Carro River after two days in motorized dugout canoes driven by Kavak Indians who were our guides for the trip.
(On a sad note, at the time we were there the Indians had just closed a campground at the pullout area where people could camp overnite and hike to the Falls for sunrise - the campers had totally trashed the area so the locals closed it down - wonderful what people can do to screw up an absolutely beautiful area).

It's always great when you can document wildlife behavior and even better when you can document environmental issues. This is an image of a male brown anole (anolis sagrei), an invasive, introduced species and a male green anole (anolis carolensis), a native species. This image documents the differences between the two species and their mutual territorial/thread display with their dewlaps extended and the rigid body posturing shows how they do not co-exist well. The brown anole competes directly with the green for habitat and prey. From South Padre Island along the Texas Gulf Coast.

(NOTE FROM THEIR WEB SITE - I said in my post the wild population of the mountain gorilla was less than 750; the IGCP site updates the population count to about 880 - still too few but good news)

Here is another HIGHLY ENDANGERED species. This is a family of mountain gorillas (gorilla gorilla berengi) in the cloud forest of Virungas Mountains National Park in Zaire. Rugabo is the male silverback enjoying a quiet moment with his mate and one of his very young offspring. This was a very special moment for me in my wildlife photography pursuits. This is the most endangered species I have photographed in the wild with a total population in the wild of less than 750. Also, Rugabo was killed by poachers not long after this image was taken. I was very fortunate to spend over two hours with this group and Rugabo. I also took full portrait images of him and the amazing intelligence I saw behind those eyes when he looked right at me will stay with me forever. (RIP Rugabo).

This one isn't quite as "Cute" as my recent Sand Cat posting.
Mother and cub cheetahs (acinonyx jubatus) feed on a Thompson's gazelle in the Masai Mara Reserve in Kenya. Cheetahs are highly endangered in the wild and their population has plunged from around 100,000 in the early 1900's to less than 10,000 today. They are under tremendous pressure from competing felines like lions and from hyenas that are much stronger and chase them off prey the cheetahs have brought down. This mother took down this gazelle almost next to our safari vehicle, perhaps feeling the vehicles would deter the lions and hyenas. She actually had two cubs.
Long term, the prognosis is not good for the cheetah due to limitations in the gene pool. There was a population crash in the 1900's and the small population that survived at that time has limited the gene pool diversity.

This is a Sand Cat (felis margarita) a small wild cat of the scrub deserts of north Africa and parts of the Middle East. Unfortunately, like most of his wild feline brethren he is endangered and VERY rare in the wild (this image from a zoo).
