Spring Cleaning -
I have to admit. The new Google+ interface is a welcome change to the great #whitespace debacle of 2012. It's probably time for me to start removing some of my old pro-Google+ helper projects, though. Should probably update my profile too.

Happy 100th Anniversary of the Income Tax -
To celebrate, I'll be spending a few days ahead of me fighting with the NC Department of Revenue to get my tax refund. You see, today I received a letter stating they would not be giving me my refund because the estimated taxes I paid last year did not match their records. (In other words, the NCDOR is incompetent.) Tomorrow, I have to call and try to calmly show them all of the receipts, which I have. I also have the cleared payments on my bank statements. I also have email confirmation numbers and document numbers. Now, why is it that I have been able to keep track of all of this information but they haven't?
Of course, I didn't see this letter until after 5pm today, so their office is closed. Oh but wait, there's a notice in here that says they have extended hours during tax season, from 8am to 6pm! Wonderful. I c... more »

TestFlight - The Best App/Service You'll Ever Use -
Why is this free? That's my main question regarding iOS beta-testing service phenom, TestFlight. +H. Wade Minter hooked me up with the link recently, and I have to say: this is the best app I've ever used...ever. Ok, app/service, whatever. (Everything is an app now, right?) No matter what you call it, I have nothing but love for it. TestFlight calls it "Painless App Distribution," and they hit the nail on the head. Everything just works. It just does. And it's smooth as silk. The UX is amazing. I said to myself, "Self, don't you wish they had a native OSX client so you didn't have to use a browser to upload?" Lo and behold, a link to download the native OSX client appeared, and all was well. Absolutely amazing. And, strangely, free.

Google Apps No Longer Free (And No Longer Work?) -
I'm going to try to suppress my geek rage while I type this, but I have a need to get signed up with Gmail for Biz (the new paid version,) and Google does not want to let that happen. So, I want to pay, and they don't want me to sign up. Let me explain...
I started the signup process for Biz Gmail. Created an account, tra la la, etc. Then, I get to the verification process. Everything looks different at this point. "Different" meaning "not the way verification used to work when things were free." So they have this little "wizard" thing that let's you pick your registrar to do your validation. Ok, I'd rather add the DNS TXT entry to Route 53. There are no special instructions provided for Route 53, but it's not that difficult to add a TXT record, so I do it. Doesn't work. Oh ... more »

Amazon Fail -
Was very interested in moving my cloud hosting needs from Rackspace to Amazon Web Services, and then Amazon went and screwed up the registration process. Contact Info? Check. Credit Card? Check. Phone-based PIN verification: ultimate fail whale.
So to create an account, Amazon has to call you, and you have to enter the PIN displayed on the screen. OK, no big deal. A little annoying. I guess it prevents bot signups. Anyway, the first attempt, I get no call. The page refreshes to tell me I didn't enter the proper PIN. (Darn right I didn't...never got a call!) Second attempt, still no call. Again it tells me I didn't enter the proper PIN. (Starting to really irk me at this point.) Third attempt, I actually GET a call...HOORAY! I enter the PIN displayed on the screen. The robot-lady on the phone tells me it's not correct. I try it again. The ... more »

So LTE just came on in my neck of the woods. Looks like sensorly.com has some great apps for mapping out precisely what is covered. I tried the iPhone app, and it's a bit borked, but apparently the Android app is solid.

Go To Hell, AIG -
Leave it to a "too-big-to-fail"-er like AIG to take taxpayer money to stay afloat, only to turn around and sue (or even consider suing) said taxpayer for not giving AIG the money on AIG's terms. In other words, they think they can hold our economy hostage for a bailout and then hold us hostage for more cash once the terms of the bailout have been met.
Here is a (profanely long) list of AIG subsidiaries. If you have any business with any of them, I highly encourage you to sever all ties.

A Simple Walk Into Mordor -
Ok, I'm not necessarily sharing this because the video is outstanding (it's not, really,) but the comments on this io9 post are. See, the poster attributed the movie quote, "One does not simply walk into Mordor" to Aragorn, but the commenters are blasting him for getting that wrong. (It was clearly Boromir, who is even in the video saying it.) My favorite comment:
is Boba Fett the captain of the Millenium Falcon in your world?

Getting Acquainted With Amazon EC2 -
For the longest time, I've been using Rackspace Cloud Servers for all of my deployments. Now, I'm finally looking into Amazon's AWS stuff. I gotta say: my first impression of this are that it's way more mature than Rackspace. The tooling alone destroys Rackspace's offerings.
I'm starting with setting up my own instance and configuring Tomcat manually. I looked at their Elastic Beanstalk and quickly decided I don't know what's going on there well enough yet to use it. Baby steps. =)

IntelliJ IDEA 12 Maven Support? -
I'm trying to find sanity in an IDE, escaping the Eclipse+m2e hell. I've evaluated IntelliJ in the past and never really liked it, but version 12 seems to work a lot more smoothly than Eclipse could ever dream to.
...except for the fact that the maven support doesn't seem to include overlays. I use war dependency overlays to share common web resources amongst numerous war modules. I've submitted a support ticket and tweeted @intellijidea, but they are probably too busy to listen to little old me.
Thing is, IntelliJ Ultimate isn't free, and I'd be happy to pay for it...if it worked. Right now, it's not working. Why? Why isn't it working?? For once in my life, I just want to open a project and have everything go according to plan.
Any IntelliJ experts out there who can help?

DragonCon 2013: Getting There -
Thanks to
+Cody Stamps and +Amanda Blain for allowing me to be a co-moderator of this community. (They beat me to it!) I've run dragonconforums.org with a friend of mine for the past few years. Hopefully we can cross-pollinate the two. I know the main thing people are going to want to figure out is their room situations given that everything is sold out in the host hotels and probably for a good five-mile radius for 2013. The best thing to do is to keep track of all posts everywhere on the Internets. (No small feat!) If you know of rooms opening up (either by cancellation or new blocks,) please post here and at http://dragonconforums.org/get-me-there!-(now-also-with-roomshare!)/ so everyone can be in the know.
That being said, who else got a room in the Marriott? That's where I'll be staying next year!

Introductions -
Hi all. I'm Matt. I've been developing with Java for 13 years. (Man, that seems like a really long time.) My main areas of expertise are in server-side Java, particularly with the Spring Framework (including a large number of Spring sub-projects,) and Android development. I also work in any other language as deemed necessary by my clients, including Objective-C for iOS, but my entire world generally revolves around server-side Java since every app has to talk to a server at some point, right? =)
I do freelance work under the moniker +Kungfuters. I also try to stay active in the Startup community, currently taking on a lead development role with up-and-coming Cosmic Cart.
Introduce yourselves! =)

Upgrading Eclipse to Use Android 4.2 SDK? -
Don't. I'll save you a couple of hours of frustration right now. Reinstall instead of upgrading!
1) Uninstall all of the Android components from Eclipse first.
About Eclipse -> Installation Details -> Uninstall...
2) Blow away your entire Android SDK installation. Mine was at /usr/local/android, for example.
3) Download the Android SDK again, and put it in place (for example at /usr/local/android) http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
4) Use the command line to load the SDK manager:
/usr/local/android/tools/android sdk
(You may have to precede this by setting the location of ANDROID_SWT to /usr/local/android/tools/lib/x86_64 or your location of swt.jar.)
5) Reinstall everything you need from scratch using the SDK manager.
6) Back in e... more »
